Three Braves home runs do in the Phils as they drop one to the Braves, 5-0.

The Braves took a 2-0 lead in the second as, with one man on, and with two men out, Alex Gonzalez hits a two-run home run, his fifth home run of the year, scoring Freddie Freeman, who had earlier singled. The Phils cut the Braves’ lead in the third as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI single, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier singled, then went to second on Shane Victorino’s ground out, 6-3, making it a 2-1 Braves’ lead. The Braves got the run back in the fifth as Freeman hits a lead-off home run, his fourth home run of the season, giving the Braves a 3-1 lead. The Braves made it a 5-1 lead in the eighth as, with one man on, and with nobody out, pinch hitter Eric Hinske hits a two-run pinch hit home run, his third home run of the season, knocking in Nate McLouth, who had just walked. The Phils got a run back in their half of the eighth as, with a runner on third, and with nobody out, Polanco hits an RBI single, knocking in Victorino, who had just tripled, making it a 5-2 Braves’ lead. But that would end up the final score as Craig Kimbrel recorded his eighth save of the year with a scoreless ninth.

Cole Hamels (4-2, 2.83) took the lost as he pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out nine. Michael Stutes pitched a third of an inning, giving up two runs on a hit and two walks. Scott Mathieson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits and two walks. Danys Baez pitched two-thirds of an inning, getting out both men that he would face. Jair Jurrjens (4-0, 1.50) got the win as he pitched six and one-third innings, giving up a run on eight hits and a walk, while striking out two. Eric O’Flaherty collected his sixth hold of the season as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, getting out the only man he would face via a doubleplay ball. Jonny Venters pitched an inning, giving up a run on three hits. Craig Kimbrel collected his eighth save of the season as he pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up a hit and a walk, while striking out two.

The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Shane Victorino (Double, Triple), Placido Polanco (Singles, 2 RBIs) and Raul Ibanez (Singles), all leading the team with two hits each.  Jimmy Rollins (Single), Ryan Howard (Single), Wilson Valdez (Double), Dane Sardinha (Single), pinch hitter Pete Orr (Single) and pinch hitter Ross Gload (Single), had the other six Phils’ hit, as the Phils out hit the Braves, but were unable to get the big hit that they needed to get back into the game in the middle innings.

The Phils (22-11, 1st) will start a long road trip, starting with a three-game series with the pesky Marlins (20-13, 2nd) tonight. The game will be played at Sun Life Stadium and will start at 7:10 pm EDT. The Phils will begin the series with Joe Blanton (0-1, 5.92), who is coming off the disabled list. His last start was against the Padres on April 23, as he ended up with a no-decision as he pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on eigth hits and two walks, while striking out three, in the Phils’ 4-2 win. He will be trying to get his first win of the season, while trying to start off the road tip on a good start. The Marlins will counter with Javier Vazquez (2-2, 6.39), who is coming off a no-decision against the Cardinals on May 4, as he went five and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out two, in the Marlins’ 8-7 win. He will be trying to get the fish closer to the Phils in the east. The Phils will be trying to put some distance between them and the fish.
