The Phils scored five unanswered runs in the last three innings to defeat the Marlins, 5-3.
The Marlins took a 1-0 lead in the first as, with two men out, Hanley Ramirez hits a solo home run, his second home run of the season. The Marlins then increased their lead in the sixth as, with the bases loaded, via three straight singles, an infield single by Emilio Bonifacio, a single by Ramirez, sending Bonifacio to second base, and a bloop single by Gaby Sanchez, with Bonifacio stopping at third, and Ramirez stopping at second base, and with one man out, John Buck hits an RBI single, scoring Bonifacio, giving the Marlins a 2-0 lead, while Ramirez and Sanchez would both move up a base, leaving the bases loaded. The Marlins then took a 3-0 lead as the next batter, Mike Stanton, hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Bonifacio. The Phils then cut the Marlins’ lead in the seventh as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, pinch hitter Pete Orr hits a pinch hit double, scoring Raul Ibanez, who had earlier doubled, and then reached third on first baseman Sanchez’s fielding error of Dane Sardinha’s grounder, making it a 3-1 Marlins’ lead, while sending Sardinha, who had been safe at first on Sanchez’s error, over to third base. The Phils then made it a 3-2 Marlins’ lead as pinch hitter Ross Gload hits into an RBI ground out, three-unassisted, scoring Sardinha, while sending Orr on to third. The Phils then tied it up at three-all in the eighth as Shane Victorino hits a lead-off home run, his sixth home run of the year. The Phils then took the lead in the ninth as, with runners on second and third, and with two men out, Jimmy Rollins hits a two-run single, scoring Sardinha, who had earlier singled, then stopped at third on Orr’s double, and Orr, who had just doubled, giving the Phils a 5-3 lead, before stopping at second on the throw to home. That would end up being the final score as Ryan Madson recorded his fifth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Cliff Lee received a no-decision as he pitched six innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, while he struck out four. J.C. Romero pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Kyle Kendrick (3-2, 1.42) gets the win as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk. Ryan Madson collected his fifth save of the season as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two Marlins. Ricky Nolasco also received a no-decision as he pitched six and a third innings, giving up two runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits and two walks, while striking out six. Ryan Webb collected his third hold of the season as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, getting out both men that he would face. Michael Dunn received his first blown save of the year as he gave up a run on one hit, while striking out one. Leo Nunez (0-1, 3.38) took the lost as he gave up two runs on three hits, while he struck out one.
The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Pete Orr leading the team with two hits, both doubles, with one of them as a pinch hitter, as he knocked in a run. Jimmy Rollins (Single, 2 RBIs), Shane Victorino (Home Run, RBI), Placido Polanco (Single), Raul Ibanez (Double), Brian Schneider (Double), Dane Sardinha (Single) and Cliff Lee (Single), had the other seven Phils’ hits. Pinch hitter Ross Gload knocked in the other Phil run with a ground out. The Phils’ bench helped to spark the Phils’ comeback in the late innings, getting some key hits.
The Phils (24-12, 1st) have the day off today, before starting a three-game weekend series with the Braves (20-18, 3rd), starting tomorrow night. They presently have a three game lead over the second place Marlins (21-15) after last night’s win.
