Vance Worley, Michael Stutes and Antonio Bastardo combine for a two-hit shutout as the Phils beat the Marlins, 1-0

Vance Worley, Michael Stutes and Antonio Bastardo combine to pitch a two-hit shutout against the Marlins as the Phils win, 1-0.

The Phils, in the seventh, break up a 0-0 pitchers’ duel between Phils’ starter Vance Worley, who, in six innings, gave up only two hits and two walks, while striking out five, and Marlins’ starter Ricky Nolasco, who had given up four hits and a walk, while striking out three, as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Michael Martinez hits an RBI single, scoring Dom Brown, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on Brian Schneider’s walk, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Schneider, who had just walked, on to second base.  That would be the final score as Worley would pitch a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, then Michael Stutes would come in and pitch a 1-2-3 eighth inning, and then Antonio Bastardo would come in and record his fifth save, in five attempts, as he pitched a scoreless ninth.

Vance Worley (4-1, 2.20) would get the win as he pitched seven shutout innings, giving up just two runs and two walks, while striking out six. Michael Stutes collected his sixth hold of the year as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Antonio Bastardo recorded his fifth save of the year as he pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up a walk, while striking out a batter. Ricky Nolasco (5-5, 3.91) picked up the lost as he pitched seven shutout innings, giving up a run on six hits and two walks, while striking out four. Randy Choate pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two. Michael Dunn pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a walk. Edward Mujica pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only man that he would face.

The Phils would have just six hits in the ballgame, with Dom Brown leading the team with two hits, both singles. Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Brian Schneider and Michael Martinez (RBI) had the other four Phils’ hits, all singles.

The Phils (54-32, 1st) will continue their three-game series with the Marlins (38-47, 5th) with a night game tomorrow night at Sun Life Stadium. The game will start at 7:10 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (9-4, 2.41), who is coming off a no-decision against the Red Sox on June 30, as he went just four innings, because of an injury to his glove hand as it was hit by a line drive, giving up only two hits, while striking out two, in the Phils’ 5-2 lost. He will be trying, for the fourth time, to get his tenth win of the season. The Marlins will counter with Chris Volstad (4-7, 5.01), who is coming off a win against the A’s on June 30, as he went seven shutout innings, giving up seven hits, in the Marlins’ 5-4 win. He will be trying to even up the series. The Phils will be going for their fifth straight series win, while trying to give Hamels his tenth win of the season.
