The Phils allow one to slip thru their grasp as they lose in extra-innings to the Marlins, 7-6.
The Phils let one slip away as they lose in extra-innings to the Marlins, 7-6.
The Phils took the lead in the second inning as, with one man on, and with two men out, John Mayberry, Jr. hits a two-run home run, his fourth home run of the season, knocking in Dom Brown, who had just walked, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Phils added to their lead in the third as, with two men on, and with two men, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI double, scoring Chase Utey, who had earlier doubled, and Ryan Howard, who had just been intentionally walked, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead. The Marlins cut the Phils’ lead in their half of the third as, with two men on, and with two men on, Gaby Sanchez hits an RBI single, scoring Anibal Sanchez, who had earlier singled, then went to second on Emilio Bonifacio’s walk, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead, before Bonifiacio, who had earlier walked, scored on Brown’s fielding error, making it a 4-2 Phils’ lead, while allowing Sanchez to reach third base. The Marlins then made it a 4-3 Phils’ lead as the next batter, Hanley Ramirez, hits an RBI single, scoring G. Sanchez. The Phils added to their lead in the fourth as, with two men out, Jimmy Rollins hits a solo home run, his eighth home run of the season, giving the Phils a 5-3 lead. The Phils then took a 6-3 lead in the sixth as, with one man out, thanks to Brown’s base running blunder of missing second base on what would otherwise had been a triple, but instead would be a single as the Marlins’ pitcher, Michael Dunn threw to second base for the out, 1-6, as the shortstop touched second base, Mayberry hits a solo home run, his fifth home run of the year and his second of the game. This would later come back to bite the Phils. The Marlins would cut down the Phils’ lead again in their half of the sixth as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Logan Morrison hits a two-run home run, his twelfth home run of the season, scoring Ramirez, who had led off the inning with a single, making it a 6-5 Phils’ lead. The Marlins would tie the game up at six-all in the seventh as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out. Ramirez hits an RBI single, knocking in Omar Infante, who had earlier tripled, while sending G. Sanchez, who had just walked, up to second base. The Marlins then tried to take the lead as they loaded the bases as Morrison reached base on a fielding error by Mayberry in center as he did not catch a ball that was catchable, as both G. Sanchez and Ramirez moved up a base. But, Andrew Carpenter got out of the jam by getting Mike Stanton to hit into a 5-4-3 doubleplay, wiping out Morrison at second base. The game stayed tied until the bottom of the tenth as, with one man out, Stanton hits a walk-off solo home run, his seventeenth home run of the season, giving the Marlins a 7-6 walk-off win.
