33 games in 31 days: Game #6: Eight inning meltdown by the Phils’ bullpen leads to the end of the Phils’ winning streak as they drop one to the Marlins, 8-4.

A bullpen meltdown in the eighth inning leads to the end of the Phils’ five-game winning streak as they lose to the Marlins, 8-4.

The Phils took the lead in the second as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Wilson Valdez hits a two-run triple, knocking in Ryan Howard, who had earlier doubled, then went to third on Carlos Ruiz’s single, and Ruiz, who had just singled, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Phils then increased their lead as Cole Hamels hits an RBI infield single, as he beat out first baseman Gaby Sanchez to the bag, allowing Valdez to score, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Marlins cut the Phils’ lead down to 3-2 in their half of the second as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Mike Cameron hits a two-run home run, his eighth home run of the year, knocking in Sanchez, who had earlier walked. The Marlins then tied the game up at three-all in the third as, with two men out, Mike Stanton hits a solo home run, his thirty-second home run of the season. The Phils retook the lead in the fourth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Hamels helped his cause with an RBI single, scoring Ruiz, who had earlier singled, then went up to second on Valdez’s ground out, 4-3, giving the Phils a 4-3 lead. The Marlins then took the lead in the eighth as, with two men on, via walks to both Omar Infante and Logan Morrison, and a sacrifice bunt by Jose Lopez, which sent Infante to third, and Morrison up to second base, and with one man out, Sanchez hits a three-run home run, his eighteenth home run of the season, scoring both Infante and Morrison, giving the Marlins a 6-4 lead. The Marlins then made it a 7-4 lead as Cameron followed with a solo home run, his ninth home run of the season, and his second home run of the ballgame. Two batters later, now with two men out, pinch hitter Greg Dobbs hits a solo home run, his seventh home run of the year, giving the Marlins an 8-4 lead. That would be the final score as Leo Nunez would pitch a scoreless ninth.

Cole Hamels would receive a no-decision as he went seven innings, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out seven. Antonio Bastardo (6-1, 1.69) took the lost as he pitched to two batters, walking both, giving up two runs. David Herndon blew his first save attempt, as he pitched an inning, giving up three runs on three hits. Ricky Nolasco also received a no-decision as he went six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out three. Ryan Webb pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Edward Mujica (9-5, 2.91) gets the win as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Leon Nunez pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up a hit.

The Phils had eight hits in the game, with Carlos Ruiz (Singles) and Cole Hamels (Singles, 2 RBIs) leading the team with two hits each. Chase Utley (Triple), Ryan Howard (Double), Raul Ibanez (Single) and Wilson Valdez (Triple, 2 RBIs) had the other four Phils’ hits.

The Phils (88-47, 1st) are presently concluding their series with the Marlins (61-77, 5th), with a game already in progress.
