The Phils added to their lead four batters later as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, John Mayberry, Jr, hits an RBI single, scoring Hunter Pence, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Marlins got a run back in the fifth as, with a man on second, and with two men out, John Buck hits an RBI single on a ball that Pence was unable to catch, knocking in Omar Infante, who had earlier doubled, cutting the Phils’ lead down to 2-1. The Phils got the run back in the seventh as Ty Wigginton hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the year, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. That would end up being the final score as Jonathan Papelbon recorded his second save of the year as he got Buck to hit into a 6-4-3 doubleplay, wiping out at second base Infante, who had earlier singled, for the game’s final outs.
Joe Blanton (1-1, 2.35) got the win as he pitched seven strong innings, giving up a run on three hits and a walk, while striking out three. Chad Qualls collected his first hold of the season as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk, while striking out a batter. Jonathan Papelbon recorded his second save of the year as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits. Mark Buehrle (0-2, 3.65) took the lost as he went six and one-third innings, giving up three runs on eight hits, while striking out two. Randy Choate, Steve Cishek and Edward Mujica combined for one and two-thirds scoreless innings.
The Phils had eight hits in the ballgame, with Hunter Pence (Single, Double) leading the ballclub with two hits. Shane Victorino (Home Run, RBI), Placido Polanco (Single), Jimmy Rollins (Single), John Mayberry, Jr. (Single, RBI), Ty Wigginton (Home Run, RBI) and Freddy Galvis (Bunt Single) had the other six Phils’ hits.
The Phils (3-3, 3rd) will tomorrow night start a new three-game series with the Mets (4-2, 2nd), with a night game at Citizens Bank Park. The game is to start at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Cliff Lee (0-0, 1.50), who is coming off a no-decision against the Pirates on April 7, as he went six innings, giving up just one run on two hits and two walks, while he struck out four, in the Phils’ 2-1 extra-inning lost.
