The bullpen lets the Phils down after the offense rallies in the bottom of the eighth, as the Phils lose to the Braves, 9-6.
The Phils took the lead in the bottom of the second as, with nobody out, Ryan Howard hits a lead-off home run, his third home run of the season, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Braves took the lead in the top of the sixth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Evan Gattis hits a two-run home run, his second home run of the season, scoring Freddie Freeman, who had started the inning off with a walk, giving the Braves a 2-1 lead. The Braves added to their lead in the top of the eighth as, with nobody out, Gattis hits a lead-off home run, his third home run of the season, and his second home run of the game, giving the Braves a 3-1 lead. The Braves then took a 4-1 lead as Dan Uggla followed with a solo home run of his own, his first home run of the season. The Brave then made it a 5-1 lead as Andrelton Simmons followed with a solo home run, his second home run of the season. The Phils then came back in their half of the eighth as, with the bases loaded, via a lead-off walk by Tony Gwynn, Jr., a single by Jimmy Rollins, with Gwynn stopping at second base, and a single by the still-red hot Chase Utley, with both runners moving up a base, and with one man out, Marlon Byrd hits a two-run single, scoring both Gwynn and Rollins, cutting the Braves’ lead down to 5-3, while sending Utley up to second base. One batter later, after Utley has moved up to third base on pitcher Luis Avilan’s wild pitch, the Phils took the lead as Dom Brown hits a three-run home run, his first home run of the season, knocking in Utley and Byrd. The Braves would retake the lead in the top of the ninth as, with the bases loaded, via a walk to B.J. Upton, Freeman reaching base on a fielder’s choice ground ball, as Upton’s beat Utley’s throw to second base, and a walk to Justin Upton, moving up both runners, and with one man out, Uggla hits a grand-slam home run, his second home run of the season, and of the game, giving the Braves a 9-6 lead, scoring B.J. Upton, Freeman and J. Upton. That would end up being the final score as David Carpenter collected his first save of the year as he pitched a scoreless ninth, getting Utley to ground out, 3-unassisted, to end the game.
Roberto Hernandez received a no-decision as he pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and six walks, while striking out three. Mario Hollands pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk, while striking out one. B.J. Rosenberg pitched to three batters, getting no one out, as he gave up three runs on three hits, all home runs. Luis Garcia pitched an inning, striking out a batter. Jake Diekman blew his second save of the year, before taking the lost (1-1, 8.59) as he pitched an inning, giving up four runs on two hits and two walks, while striking out three. Ervin Santana also received a no-decision as he threw six innings, giving up a run on four hits and two walks, while striking out eleven. Ian Thomas received his first hold of the year as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, getting out both men whom he would face. Anthony Varvaro would also receive his first hold of the season as he went a third of an inning, striking out the only man whom he would face. Luis Avilan (3-1, 13.50) got the win as he pitched an inning, giving up five runs on four hits, a walk and a wild pitch, while striking out a batter. David Carpenter received his first save of the season as he threw a scoreless inning, giving up a walk, while striking out a batter.

Tony Gwynn, Jr. (Single), Jimmy Rollins (Single), Ryan Howard (Home Run, RBI) and Dom Brown (Home Run, 3RBIs) had the other four Phils’ hits. The Phils also had four walks (Gwynn, Rollins, Brown, Carlos Ruiz) and a sacrifice bunt (Rollins) in the game, while the defense committed an error (Ruiz) and performed a doubleplay.
The Phils (6-7, T-3) continue their series with the Braves (9-4, 1st) with a ballgame tonight, weather permitting. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park, and is suppose to start at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Cliff Lee (2-1, 5.50), who is coming off a start against the Brewers on April 10, as he went six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits, while he struck out eight, in the Phils’ 6-2 lost. He will be trying to lead the Phils to a win over the Braves. The Braves will counter with David Hale (0-0, 2.89), who is coming off a no-decision against the Mets on April 10, as he went four and a third innings, giving up four runs, three of which were earned, on five hits and five walks, while striking out two, in the Braves’ 6-4 lost. He is still looking for his first win. The Phils will be out to recover from last night’s hard to swallow lost.
