The Phils’ losing streak reaches three game as they get swept by the Angels, losing 3-0.

Philadelphia_PhilliesThe Phils most recent losing streak reaches three games as they are swept in interleague play by the Angels, losing 3-0.

The Angels took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI single, knocking in Albert Pujols, who had just doubled, giving the Angels a 1-0 lead. The Angels increased their lead in the top of the second as, with two men on, and with two men out, Efren Navarro hits an RBI single, scoring Hank Conger, who had started the inning off with a single, then stopped at second base on Grant Green’s single, giving the Angels a 2-0 lead, while Green, who had earlier singled, moved up to third base. The Angels then added to their lead in the top of the third as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Erick Aybar hits an RBI double, knocking in Pujols, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Ibanez’s walk, giving the Angels a 3-0 lead, while sending Ibanez, who had just walked, over to third base. That would end up being the final score as Angels’ pitching would shut out the Phils, until Joe Smith collected his fifth save of the season as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out Dom Brown on a foul tip for the game’s final out.

A.J. Burnett (2-3, 3.13) took the lost as he pitched five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and five walks, while striking out three. Jeff Manship, Mike Adams, Mario Hollands and Antonio Bastardo combined for four scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Adams) and a walk (Adams) between them, while striking out four (Manship (1), Adams (2), Bastardo (1)). Garrett Richards (4-0, 2.42) got the win as he pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up five hits and two wild pitches, while striking out eight. Ernesto Frieri collected his second hold of the season as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Joe Smith collected his fifth save of the year as he threw a scoreless inning, striking out a batter.

The Phils had only five hits in the game, with Chase Utley leading the team with two hits, both doubles. Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz had the other three Phils’ hits, all singles. The Phils defense performed two double plays in the game.

The Phils (17-21, 5th) have the day-off today, hopefully using it to figure out how to end their present funk.
