The Phils sweep the Brewers thanks to a seven-run eighth inning, as they defeat the Brew Crew, 9-1.
The Brewers, in the bottom of the six, break up a 0-0 pitchers’ duel between Phils’ starter David Buchanan, who have given up only a hit, a walk and a hit batter by this point, and Brewers’ starter Matt Garza, who after six innings, had been throwing a no-hitter on the Phils, giving up only a walk, as Carlos Gomez hits a lead-off home run, his fourteenth home run of the season, giving the Brewers a 1-0 lead. The Phils took the lead in the top of the eighth as, with runners on second and third, and with two men out, Jimmy Rollins hits a two-run single, knocking in Ben Revere, who was pinch-running for Cameron Rupp, who had earlier doubled, before moving up to third base on Tony Gwynn, Jr’s ground out, 5-3, and pinch-hitter Cesar Hernandez, who had earlier walked, then moved up to second base on Gwynn, Jr’s ground out, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead. The Phils added to their lead two batters later, after Rollins had stolen second base, and Chase Utley had walked, as Ryan Howard hits an RBI double, scoring Rollins, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead, before the Brewers challenged the ruling on the field, which had allowed Utley to score as well, with the umpires declaring that the ball had gone into the stands, thus forcing Utley back to third base as Howard is credited with a ground-rule double. Two batters later, after Marlon Byrd is intentionally walked to load the bases, the Phils make it a 5-1 lead as Cody Asche hits a two-run ground-rule double, scoring Utley and Howard, while sending Byrd all the way to third base. The Phils then made it a 7-1 lead as Dom Brown hits a two-run single, scoring Byrd and Asche. The Phils added to their lead in the top of the ninth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Howard hits a two-run home run, his fifteenth home run of the season, knocking in Rollins, who had earlier walked. That would end up being the final score as Jake Diekman threw a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out Ryan Braun, swinging, for the game’s final out.
David Buchanan (5-5, 4.40) got the win as he pitched seven strong innings, giving up a run on four hits, a walk and a wild pitch, while striking out five. Antonio Bastardo and Jake Diekman combined for two 1-2-3 innings, striking out three (Bastardo (2), Diekman (1)) between them. Matt Garza (6-6, 3.69) took the lost as he went seven and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out three. Will Smith pitched to five batters, getting none of them out, as he gave up five runs on three hits and two walks. Brandon Kintzler pitched a third of an inning, giving up two hits. Wei-Chung Wang pitched an inning, giving up two runs on a hit and a walk.
The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Jimmy Rollins (Singles, 2 RBIs) and Ryan Howard (Double, Home Run, 3 RBIs) both leading the team with two hits each. Chase Utley (Single), Cody Asche (Double, 2 RBIs), Dom Brown (Single, 2 RBIs), Cameron Rupp (Double) and Ben Revere (Single), had the other five Phils’ hits. The Phils had a stolen base in the game (Rollins (18)), while the defense performed a double play.
The Phils start their next series, their last before the All-Star Break, at home this weekend, in a game that’s already in progress.
