A.J. Burnett strike out twelve Nats in seven strong innings of work, as the Phils hang on to defeat the division leading Nats, 3-2.

The Phils took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Dom Brown hits an RBI single, scoring Ryan Howard, who had earlier doubled, then stopped at third base on Marlon Byrd’s single, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Byrd, who had just singled, up to second base. The Phils increased their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Cody Asche hits a lead-off home run, his ninth home run of the season, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Nats would get a run back in the top of the sixth as, with one man out, Anthony Rendon hits a solo home run, his seventeenth home run of the year, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead. The Phils would get the run back in the bottom of the seventh as, with one man out, Carlos Ruiz hits a solo home run, his fourth home run of the season, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. The Nats would cut the Phils’ lead down to 3-2 in the top of the ninth as, with two men out, Wilson Ramos hits a solo home run, his seventh home run of the season. That would be the final score as Jonathan Papelbon then buckled down to collect his thirty-second save of the season.

A.J. Burnett (7-14, 4.30) got the win as he pitched seven strong innings, giving up a run on three hits, a walk and a hit batter, while striking out twelve. Jake Diekman received his sixteenth hold of the year as he pitched a scoreless inning, as he gave up a hit and a walk. Jonathan Papelbon received his thirty-second save of the year as he pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out two. Tanner Roark (12-8, 2.81) took the lost as he went six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out two. Jerry Blevins pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits and a hit batter, while striking out one. Ross Detwiler pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter.

The Phils had eight hits in the game, with Jimmy Rollins and Dom Brown (RBI) both leading the team with two hits each, all singles. Ryan Howard (Double), Marlon Byrd (Single), Cody Ache (Home Run, RBI) and Carlos Ruiz (Home Run, RBI), had the other four Phils’ hits. The Phils also had a walk (Howard), a hit batter (Darin Ruf) and a stolen base (Jimmy Rollins (27)) in the game.

The Phils (59-72, 5th) continue their series with the Nats (75-55, 1st) with a game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and is to begin at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (7-6, 2.53), who is coming off a win against the Mariners on August 20, as he pitched five innings, giving up three runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out four, in the Phils’ 4-3 win. He will be trying to give the Phils their third straight series win with a victory tonight. The Nats will counter with Gio Gonzalez (6-9, 3.83), who is coming off a no-decision against the Diamondbacks on August 21, as he threw seven scoreless innings, giving up four hits and three walks, while striking out six, in the Nats’ 1-0 walk-off win. He will be trying to even up the series. The Phils will be trying to win their third straight series, and their third straight game with a win tonight.
