The Phils scored three times in the sixth to give themselves a win over the BoSox, 4-1.

The Phils took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Michael Martinez hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Brian Schneider, who had earlier walked, reached second on a force out attempt throwing error by Jon Lester on a Roy Halladay grounder, then went to third on a Shane Victorino sacrifice bunt, 1-4. The Red Sox came back to tie it up at 1-1 in the top of the fifth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Drew Sutton hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Jed Lowrie, who had earlier doubled, then went to third on a Ryan Khoury ground out, 3-unassisted. The Phils retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI single, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier walked, moved up to second base on Ryan Howard’s single, then stole third, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while sending Howard, who had just singled, up to second base. Two batters later, after Ben Francisco took a walk, loading up the bases, as Howard and Ibanez both moved up a base, and with still one man out, Josh Barfield hits a two-run single, scoring both Howard and Ibanez, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead, while sending Francisco to second base. That would be the final score as Madson records his first save of the spring.

Roy Halladay gets the win (3-0, 0.48) as he pitched seven and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on five hits and three walks, as he struck out six. Ryan Madson received his first save of the spring as he pitched an inning and a third, giving up a hit. Jon Lester took the lost (1-1, 3.38) as he pitched five and a third innings, giving up four runs, only three of which were earned, on five hits and four walks, as he struck out six. Matt Albers then followed with one and two-thirds scoreless innings, striking out three. Dan Wheeler then pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit.

The Phils had six hits in the game, all singles, by Ryan Howard, Raul Ibanez, Cory Sullivan, Josh Barfield, Brian Schneider and Roy Halladay. Barfield knocked in two of the Phils’ run with his single, while Ibanez brought in one with a single and Michael Martinez brought in one with a sac fly.

The Phils’ spring training record is now 16-9.

The Phils signed Luis Castillo to a minor league contract.

Yesterday, the Phils signed recently released New York Mets second baseman, Luis Castillo, to a minor league contract, after Castillo had cleared waivers. Castillo, who, in 2010, played in 86 games for the Mets, going .235, with 58 hits, hitting four doubles and two triples, while knocking in only 17 RBIs, will be trying for the second baseman job, to temporarily replace Chase Utley while he continues to battle his injury.

The Phils, if he is able to make the roster, will only pay $414,000 of his $6 million salary. The Mets would pay the rest.

Well, we’ll see how this pan out. Castillo just should not feel too comfortable if he does make the team. After all, he is a temporary solution.

Three roundtrippers help lead the Phils to a 7-5 victory over the Orioles.

Home runs by John Mayberry, Jr., Shane Victorino and Erik Kratz leads the Phils to a 7-5 win over the Orioles.

The Orioles took the lead in the first as, with the bases loaded, via a Robert Andino single, a walk to Adam Jones, sending Andino to second base, a double steal by Andino and Jones, and then a walk to Derrek Lee, and with nobody out, Vladmir Guerrero, knocking in Andino, giving the Orioles a 1-0 lead, while sending Jones up to third base and Lee to second base, with still no one out. The Orioles then took a 2-0 lead as, with the bases still loaded, and with now one man out, Nolan Reimold forced in a run with a walk, forcing in Jones, while moving both Lee and Guerrero up a base. The Orioles then made it 3-0 as Randy Winn hits into an RBI force out, 4-unassisted, as Guerrero scored, while Reimold is forced out at second base for the inning’s second out, as Lee moved up to third while Winn is safe at first. The Phils cut the Orioles’ lead in the second as John Mayberry, Jr. hits a two-run home run, his fifth home run of the spring, scoring Ross Gload, who had earlier singled, making it a 3-2 Orioles’ lead. The Orioles added to their lead in the third as, with a runner on second, and with no one out, Mark Reynolds hits an RBI single, scoring Guerrero, who had earlier doubled, making it a 4-2 Orioles’ lead. The Orioles then made it 5-2 in the fourth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Guerrero hits an RBI single, knocking in Jake Fox, who had just doubled. The Phils then tied up the game at five-all in the fifth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Shane Victorino hits a three-run home run, his first of the spring, knocking in Josh Barfield and Erik Kratz, who had both walked. The Phils then took the lead in the seventh as, with one man out, Kratz’s hits a solo home run, his first home run of the spring, giving the Phils a 6-5 lead. Three batters later, with runners on the corners, via a double by Michael Martinez and an infield single by Cory Sullivan, sending Martinez to third base, and still with one man out, Delwyn Young brought home Martinez on a force attempt error by Reynolds, making it a 7-5 Phils’ lead, while Sullivan would be safe at second on the error. That would end up being the final score as David Herndon recorded his first save of the spring as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Cole Hamels received a no-decision as he pitched three and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out five. Danys Baez got the win (2-0, 0.93) as he pitched two and one-third innings, giving up two hits, while striking out two. Scott Mathieson recorded his second hold of the season, as he pitched a scoreless inning, striking out a batter. David Herndon recorded his first save of the spring, as he pitched two scoreless innings, striking out a batter. Jake Arrieta also received a no-decision as he pitched four and a third inning, giving up four runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out two batters. Clay Rapada recorded his first blown save of the spring, as he pitched two-thirds of an innings, giving up a run on a hit, while striking out a batter. Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless inning, striking out a batter. Michael Gonzalez took the lost (0-1, 5.40), as he pitched an inning, giving up two runs on three hits, as he struck out three batters. David Riske then followed with two scoreless innings, striking out a batter.

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the third as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Corey Wimberly hits into an RBI ground out, 6-3, knocking in Josh Rodriguez, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on Pedro Ciriaco’s single, then stopped at third on Brad Lincoln’s force out, 5-4, forcing out Ciriaco at second base, while sending Lincoln, who had just hit into a force out, up to second base. The Pirates then made it 2-0 as, with a runner on second and now with two men out, John Bowker hits into an RBI double, knocking in Lincoln. The Phils cut the Pirates’ lead in their half of the third as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Shane Victorino hits an RBI double, knocking in Michael Martinez, who had earlier walked, moved up to second on Roy Oswalt’s sacrifice bunt, 3-4, then went to third on Jimmy Rollins’ ground out, 1-unassisted, making it a 2-1 Pirates’ lead. The Phils would win the game in the ninth as, with runners on second and third, and with two-men out, Tuffy Gosewisch hits a two-run single off of Josh Harrison’s glove, knocking in Pete Orr, who had earlier reached base on a bunt single to first, was safe at second on a force out of Erik Kratz’s grounder, 5-unassisted as Ben Francisco, who had reached base on a bunt single, ran out of the base path, then stopped at second on Orr’s bunt single, and stopped at third on Martinez’s ground out, 4-3, and Kratz’s who was safe at first as Francisco was out at third as he went out of the base line to try and avoid the tag, and then stopped at second on Martinez’s ground out, giving the Phils a 3-2 win.

Roy Oswalt received a no-decision as he pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits, as he struck out five. Jose Contreras and J.C. Romero combine for two scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Contreras) and a walk (Romero), while striking out two batters. Ryan Madson gets the win (1-0, 2.57),  as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit. Brad Lincoln also received a no-decision, as he pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on a hit, while walking two batters. Chris Resop received his second hold of the spring as he pitched two and a third innings, giving up three hits and a walk, while striking out two. Jose Veras also received his second hold of the spring, as he pitched two innings, giving up two hits and a walk. Michael Crotta received his first hold of the spring, as he pitched a scoreless inning, striking out a batter. Chris Leroux blown his second save attempt of the spring, before taking the lost (1-1, 5.40), as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on three hits.

After four scoreless innings, the Phils took the lead in the fifth as, with runners on the corners and with nobody out, Josh Barfield hits an RBI double, knocking in Michael Martinez, who had earlier doubled and had moved up to third on Freddy Galvis’ bunt single, while sending Glavis, who had earlier got on base on a bunt single, over to third base, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 3-0 lead as Wilson Valdez hits a two-run double, knocking in both Galvis and Barfield. The Phils then took a 6-0 lead as, with two men on, and with one man out, Delwyn Young hits a three-run home run, his first home run of the spring, knocking in Valdez, who had moved up to third on a Ben Francisco ground out, 5-3, and John Mayberry, Jr., who had just walked, and then stole second base. The Twins tried to come back in their half of the seventh, as, with runners on second and third, and with nobody out, Yangervis Solarte, who was pinch running for Delmon Young, who had earlier doubled, and then moved up to third on a Matt Anderson wild pitch, scored on a second Anderson wild pitch, making it a 6-1 Phils’ lead, while sending Mike Hollimon, who had earlier singled, had moved up to first second base and then to third on the two wild pitches. The Twins then made it a 6-2 Phils’  lead as Jim Thome reached base on a fielding error by first baseman Mayberry, scoring Hollimon from third. Five batters later, with the bases loaded, via Chase Lambin being hit by the pitch, moving pinch runner Daniel Rohlfing up to second base, and a walk to Steve Holms, which moved both runners up a base, and with two men out, Rohlfing would score on a wild pitch, the third of the inning, while Lambin would moved up to third and Holms would go to second base, making it a 6-3 Phils’ lead. That would be the final score, as Chris Kissock recorded his first save of the spring.

Michael Stutes received a no-decision as he pitched three scoreless innngs, as he only walked a batter, while striking out one. Danys Baez (1-0, 0.00) received the win as he pitched a scoreless inning. Jason Grilli pitched two scoreless innings, giving up a walk, while striking out three. Matt Anderson pitched a third of an innings, giving up three runs, only two of which were earned, on two hits, a walk and two wild pitches. Ryan Edell recorded his first hold of the year as he pitched one and two-thirds innings, giving up a hit, while striking out three. Chris Kissock recorded his first save of the spring as he pitched an inning, giving up a hit and a walk. Francisco Liriano also received a no-decision as he pitched three innings, giving up just four hits and two walks, while striking out two. Jose Mijares pitched a scoreless innings, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Joe Nathan (0-1, 12.46) took the lost as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up six runs on five hits and a walk. Kyle Gbson pitched one and two-thirds innings, striking out a batter. Eric Hacker and Yorman Bazardo combined for three scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Hacker), while striking out three batters (Hacker (2), Bazardo (1)).

The Phils had eleven hits in the game, with Josh Barfield, Wilson Valdez, Delwyn Young and Michael Martinez each leading the team with two hits each, with Barfield, Valdez and Martinez’s each hitting a single and a double, with Barfield knocking in a run, and Valdez bringing in two, while Young’s hits were a single and a three-run home run. The Phils have extended Ruben Amaro, Jr.’s Contract.

Earlier today, the Phils have announced that they have extended General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr.’s contract. Amaro has signed a four-year extension with the Phils a day after the team had signed manager Charlie Manuel to a two-year extension of his contract. This means that Amaro will be the Phils’ General Manager through 2015, helping to keep things stable at the top for the next few years.

Here’s to hoping that he’ll be making some more deals that’ll help the team during that time. Time to really start earning, Ruben.

The Phils took an early 2-0 lead as, with one man on, and with one man out, Raul Ibanez hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the spring, knocking in Shane Victorino, who had earlier walked. Three batters later, the Phils made it a 3-0 lead as, with a runner on second, and now with two men out, Delwyn Young hits an RBI single, scoring Ross Gload, who had earlier doubled, before Young was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double, 9-3-6-4. The Orioles came back in their half of the first as, with a runner on first, and with nobody out, Nick Markakis hits an RBI triple, knocking in J.J. Hardy, who had earlier singled, making it a 3-1 Phils’ lead. One batter later, the Orioles made it a 3-2 lead as Adam Jones hits into an RBI ground out, 4-3, scoring Markakis. The Phils made it a 4-2 lead in the third as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Ryan Howard hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Victorino, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Ibanez’s double. The Orioles got that run back in their half of the third as, with two men out, Jones hits a solo home run, his first home run of the spring, making it a 5-3 Phils’ lead. The Phils took a 6-3 lead in the fifth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Ibanez hits an RBI single, scoring Victorino, who had earlier doubled. The Phils then made it a 7-3 lead as Howard hits a two-run home run, his fourth home run of the spring, knocking in Ibanez. The Orioles made it an 8-5 Phils’ lead in the eighth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Joseph Mahoney hits a two-run double, scoring Matt Angle, who had earlier singled, then stopped at third on a Josh Bell single, and Bell, who had just singled. The Phils then busted the game wide open in the ninth as, with two men on base, and with two men out, Brandon Moss hits a two-run double, knocking in Freddy Galvis, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base when Rich Thompson was hit by the pitch, and Thompson, who had just been hit by the pitch, making it a 10-5 Phils’ lead. One batter later, the Phils took an 11-5 lead as Moss scored on a Brandon Snyder’s fielding error of a Jim Murphy grounder, with Murphy stopping at second base. The Phils then made it a 13-5 lead as John Mayberry, Jr. hits a two-run home run, his fourth home run of the spring, scoring Murphy before him. The Orioles got a run back in the bottom of the ninth when Robert Andino hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the spring, making it a 13-6 Phils’ leads. Danys Baez received his first hold of the sproing as he pitched two scoreless innings, giving up two walks, while striking out a batter. Antonio Bastardo also pitched two scoreless innings, giving up two walks, while striking out three. Brad Lidge then pitched an inning, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk. Dan Meyer then followed as he also pitched an inning, giving up a run on one hit, while striking out a batter. Jeremy Guthrie (1-2, 6.00) took the lost as he pitched four innings, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out a batter. Kevin Gregg pitched an inning, giving up four runs on five hits. Clay Rapada then followed with a scoreless inning, striking out a batter. Jason Berken then pitched two scoreless innings. Rick VandenHurk then pitched an inning, giving up five runs, only two of which were earned, on three hits, while he struck out two.

The Phils had fourteen hits in the game, with Raul Ibanez and Delwyn Young both leading the team with three hits, with Ibanez hitting a single, a double and a two-run home run, as he knocked in three runs, raising his average to .321, while Young had two singles and a double, while he knocked in a run. Shane Victorino (single and double) and Ross Gload (double and solo home run) both followed with two hits, with Gload knocking in a run. Freddy Galvis (single), Brandon Moss (double), Ryan Howard (two-run home run) and John Mayberry, Jr. (two-run home run) had the other four Phils’ hits, with Howard knocking in three runs, one by sacrifice fly, Moss two runs and Mayberry two runs. The other Phil run came in on an error.

Charlie Manuel contract extended for two more years.

The Phils have extended Charlie Manuel’s contract with the Phils for two more seasons as the Phils manager, for $7.5 million dollars, so he’ll still be the Phils’ manager until the end of 2013.

Congrats on the new contract, Charlie. Hopefully it’ll lead to a few more playoff appearances.

The Phils took a 1-0 lead in the second as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Ross Gload hits an RBI single, knocking in Raul Ibanez, who had earlier doubled, then went to third on Delwyn Young’s single, while sending Young, who had just singled, up to second base. One batter later, Brian Schneider made it a 4-0 Phils’ lead as he hits a 3-run home run, his first home run of the spring, scoring both Young and Gload. The Tigers would get a run back in their half of the second as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Brennan Boesch hits into a double play, 3-6-3, scoring Miguel Cabrera, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Victor Martinez’s single, while wiping out at second base, for the inning’s first out, Martinez, who had just singled, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. The Tigers would make it 4-2 Phils in the third as, with the bases loaded, via a single to Don Kelly, a walk to Andy Dirks, moving Kelly to second base, and a single to Will Rhymes, moving both Kelly and Dirks up a base, and with one man out, Magglio Ordonez hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Kelly from third. The Phils would increase their lead in the seventh as, with two men out, Jeff Larish hits a solo home run, his first home run of the spring, giving the Phils a 5-2 lead. The Tigers would get that run back in the ninth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Audy Ciriaco hits into an RBI ground out, 6-3, knocking in Argenis Diaz, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Ben Guez’s double. That would be the final score as Mike Zagurski would end the game by striking out both pinch hitters Ryan Strieby and Scott Sizemore.

Ryan Madson recorded his first spring hold as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit while striking out a batter. J.C. Romero recorded his first spring training hold as he also pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits. David Herndon received his second spring hold as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Mike Zagurski recorded his first spring save as he pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out two. Rick Porcello took the lost (0-1, 4.50), as he pitched three innings, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out two. Adam Wilk and Jose Valverde then followed for three scoreless innings, as they together gave up two hits (one hit each) and a walk (Wilk). Duane Below then followed for an inning, giving up a run on one hit, while striking out a batter. Brad Thomas and Ryan Perry then followed with two scoreless innings, giving up no hits between them.

The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Raul Ibanez leading the team with two hits, a single and a double, raising his spring training average to .240. Jimmy Rollins (Single), Placido Polanco (Single), Jeff Larish (Home Run), Delwyn Young (Single), Ross Gload (Single), Brian Schneider (Home Run) and Wilson Valez (Single) had the other seven Phil’s hits, two of which were a three-run home run (Schneider) and a solo shot (Larish). Post No. 900: The Phils announced that they will be sidelining Utley indefinitely…

The Phils have just announced that they plan to sideline their star second baseman Chase Utley indefinitely until his right knee gets better, as an MRI reveals that not only does he have mild patellar tendinitis of the right knee, but that there is also bone inflammation (Which may help explain why the right knee is not healing the way it should be). The Phils have no idea when Utley will be back, although it is likely that they will place him on the 15-day disable list when the regular season starts on April 1. Although surgery is an option, the Phils are thinking of doing it only as a last resort.

As the Phils try to figure out when Chase will be ready to go during the season, the Phils have said that they will, for the moment, not be looking outside of the organization for his replacement. This, of course, means that we’ll be, once again, seeing Wilson Valdez as the starting second base for a while, with someone else taking his place on the bench from among those who are presently playing with the team during spring training.

I just plainly hope that this will not throw a major monkey wrench into the team’s chances to make the playoffs, never mind the World Series.
