That would hurt even more as the next batter, Carlos Ruiz, hits a ball sharply to first baseman LaRoche, who caught the ball and then threw it home for the fielder’s choice out, as catcher Jesus Flores tagged out Polanco for the inning’s second out, while Ruiz reached first base safely. Henry Rodriguez collected his second hold of the season as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on a hit, a walk and two wild pitches. Sean Burnett received his second save of the year as he pitch two-thirds of an inning, walking a batter.

The Phils had only six hits in the game with Placido Polanco (Singles) and Shane Victorino (Single, Double) both leading the ballclub with two hits apiece. Juan Pierre and Mike Fontenot had the other two Phils’ hits, both singles, as the Phils’ offense was kept quiet during most of the game. Pinch hitter Ty Wigginton knocked in the only Phil run with a sacrifice fly, as a baserunning mistake by Polanco kept them from scoring earlier in the game, becoming real big in the ninth inning as they attempted a late rally. The Phils also had five walks in the game.

He will be trying to end the Phils’ latest losing streak. The Nats will counter with Jordan Zimmermann (2-4, 2.58), who is coming off a lost against the Pirates on May 17, as he went six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out six, in the Nats’ 5-3 lost. He will be out to add to the Phils’ present woes. The Phils will be trying to get back to .500 with a win tonight.

A six-run third supports a fine pitching performance by Roy Halladay as the Phils proceed to sweep the Nats, 7-4.

A six-run third and a fine pitching performance by their ace Roy Halladay leads the Phils to a sweep of the hapless Nats, 7-3.

The Phils broke the game wide open in their half of the third as they send ten men to the plate. They took a 2-0 lead as, with Jimmy Rollins on first, via a single, and with nobody out, Shane Victorino hits a two-run home run, his fifth home run of the season, scoring Rollins. Three batters later, after Placido Polanco had reached base with a single, and then moved up to second base on Ryan Howard’s walk, John Mayberry, Jr. gave the Phils a 3-0 lead with an RBI double, knocking in Polanco, while sending Howard to third base. A red-hot Raul Ibanez then followed with a two-run double, scoring both Howard and Mayberry, giving the Phils a 5-0 lead. The Phils then took a 6-0 lead as Ibanez scored on a Wilson Valdez single. The Nats got on the scoreboard in the fourth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Wilson Ramos hits an RBI single, scoring Jayson Werth, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on an Adam LaRoche single, and was called safe by the home plate umpire on a play that he might have missed, making it a 6-1 Phils’ lead, while sending LaRoche, who had just singled, up to second base. Two batters later, after Jerry Hairston had loaded up the bases with a single, moving both LaRoche and Ramos up a base, Ian Desmond hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in LaRoche, making it a 6-2 Phils’ lead. The Phils got a run back in the fifth as Ibanez hits a lead-off home run, his third home run of the year, and his second in two days, as he give the Phils a 7-2 lead. The Nats made it a 7-3 Phils’ lead in the eighth as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Werth hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Danny Espinosa, who had earlier doubled, then stopped at third on Alex Cora’s single. That would be the final score as Ryan Madson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Roy Halladay (5-1, 2.19) gets the win as he pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits, as he struck out ten. Antonio Bastardo pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits, as he struck out a batter. Ryan Madson pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Shane Victorino (Home Run, 2 RBIs), Placido Polanco (Single) and John Mayberry, Jr. (Double, RBI), had the other three Phils’ hits. The slight adjustment in their line-up, along with Ibanez getting hot (8-11), have gotten the offense rolling again. I just hope it last for a while.
