The Phils score enough runs in support of a good performance by Cole Hamels as they defeat the Padres, 3-2.

The Phils’ offense knocked in enough runs to support a good start by Cole Hamels as they go on to defeat the Padres, 3-2.

The Phils took the lead in the first as Jimmy Rollins hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the year, and the 38th lead-off home run of his career, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the second as, with a man on second, and with two men out, Brian Schneider hits an RBI single, knocking in Ty Wigginton, who had reached first base on third baseman James Darnell’s throwing error, before stopping at second base as the ball went into the camera well, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Padres got a run back in the third as, with two men on, and with one man out, Jesus Guzman hits an RBI ground out, 5-3, scoring Chris Denorfia, who had earlier doubled, then stole third base as part of a double steal, making it a 2-1 Phils’ lead, while sending to third Yonder Alonso, who had earlier walked, then stole second base at the tail end of the double steal. The Phils added to their lead in the fifth as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Juan Pierre hits an RBI double, scoring Schneider, who had earlier doubled, then moved up to third on Cole Hamels’ sacrifice bunt, 1-3, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. The Padres cut the Phils’ lead down to 3-2 in the eighth as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Nick Hundley hits an RBI ground out, 6-3 scoring Guzman, who had earlier doubled, then stole third base. That would be the final score as Jonathan Papelbon recorded his tenth save of the season by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth, getting Cameron Maybin to fly out to right for the game’s final out.

Cole Hamels (5-1, 2.28) got the win as he pitched seven strong innings, giving up just a run on five scattered hits and three walks, while striking out five. Jose Contreras received his third hold of the year as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on a hit, as he struck out a batter. Antonio Bastardo recorded his sixth hold of the season as he pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only batter that he would face. Jonathan Papelbon received his tenth save of the season as he threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two. Jeff Suppen (2-1, 1.69) took the lost as he went six innings, giving up three runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits and two walks, as he struck out a batter. Alex Hinshaw and Brad Brach combined for two scoreless innings, giving up two hits (one hit apiece) and three walks (Hinshaw (1), Brach (2)) between them, while striking out three (Hinshaw (1), Brach (2)).

The Phils had eight hits in the ballgame, with Juan Pierre (Single, Double, RBI) and Brian Schneider (Single, Double, RBI) both leading the club with two hits each. Jimmy Rollins (Home Run, RBI), Shane Victorino (Single), Ty Wigginton (Single) and pinch hitter Carlos Ruiz (Single), had the other four Phils’ hits. The Phils also had three walks, and one stolen base (Victorino (11)).

The Phils (16-19, 5th East) will conclude their eight-game home stand with a two-game series against the Astros (15-19, T-4 Central), starting tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils’ starter will be Joe Blanton (3-3, 3.24), who is coming off a no-decision against the Mets on May 8, where he threw six and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out seven, in the Phils’ 7-4 lost. He will be going for his fourth win of the season. The Astros will counter with Lucas Harrell (2-2, 4.58), who is coming off a no-decision of his own against the Marlins on May 9, as he threw five and one-third innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out four, in the Astros’ 5-3 lost. He’ll be trying for his third win. The Phils will be going for their second straight win while hoping that the bullpen have finally become stabilized.
