The Rockies took the lead in the bottom of the third as, with a runner on first, and with one man out, D. J. LeMahieu hits a single to left center field, which sends Nolan Arenado, who had started the inning off with a single, to third base, as left fielder Dom Brown catches the ball, and throws it towards second base. At this point, the Rockies’ third base coach decide to send Arenado home, which prompts second baseman Chase Utley to throw the ball towards home plate, after having first caught Brown’s throw, while catcher Carlos Ruiz waited for the ball to arrive while preparing to block the plate. Ruiz soon caught the ball, then tagged out a sliding Arendo, for what was thought to be the inning’s first out. But Rockies’ manager Walt Weiss then came out of the Rockies’ dugout, and asked the umpires to review the play. The play was reviewed and the umpires overturned the call, claiming that Ruiz did not give Arendo a lane to slide through while waiting for the ball to arrive, giving the Rockies a 1-0 lead, while LeMahieu would move up to second base on the throw. The Rockies then added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Justin Morneau hits a two-run home run, his third home run of the season, knocking in Carlos Gonzalez, who had started the inning off with a single, giving the Rockies a 3-0 lead. The Phils would finally get on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Jimmy Rollins hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, knocking in Cody Asche, who had started the inning off with a single, moved up to second base on pitcher Bobby Logan’s throwing error of pinch-hitter John Mayberry, Jr.’s grounder, then went to third base on Ben Revere’s ground out, 3-unassisted, making it a 3-1 Rockies’ lead, while sending Mayberry, who had reached first base on Logan’s throwing error, then moved up to second base on Revere’s ground out, up to third base. That would end up being the final score as LaTroy Hawkins collected his fifth save of the season as he threw a 1-2-3 inning, as he got Brown to fly out to center field for the final out.
Kyle Kendrick (0-2, 3.60) took the lost as he went seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out three. Jake Diekman pitched a 1-2-3 inning, as he struck out two. Jordon Lyles (3-0, 3.04) pitched seven innings, plus one batter, as he gave up a run on five hits and a walk, while he struck out two. Bobby Logan received his third hold of the year, as he pitched an inning, striking out a batter. LaTroy Hawkins received his fifth save of the season as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
The Phils had only five hits in the game, all singles, with Jimmy Rollins (RBI) leading the team with two hits. Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Cody Asche had the other three Phils’ hits. The Phils also had a walk (Marlon Byrd) in the game.
