Spring Training: Moyer and Phillies gets spanked by the Pirates, losing 10-4.
For the first time this spring, Jamie Moyer got roughed up on the mound. As he pitched five and two-thirds innings, the ageless wonder ended up giving up seven runs to the Bucos on eleven hits, including a solo home run to Andrew McCutchen in the fifth, and a walk while also striking out seven Pirates. There’s both good and bad news in the line. The good news is that Moyer is obviously still confusing the batters with his pitches, if the seven strikeouts are any indication. The bad news is that he got roughed up. Hopefully this will inspire him to be more clever the next time he takes the mound before he makes his first start of the season the Tuesday after next. Scott Eyre took the mound next for a third of an inning, striking out the only man he would face. Gary Majewski followed him for a scoreless inning, giving up just a hit. Brad Lidge pitched the eighth inning, giving up three runs on two hits, including a two-run shot to Garrett Jones, and a walk as he struck out one. With the lost, Moyer’s spring line is now 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA.
Among the batters, the Phillies only got four hits, with two of them being for homes runs and a third being a double. Carlos Ruiz would lead the offense, getting a double and a three-run home run in the seventh inning in three at-bats, knocking in three of the Phils four runs. His spring batting average is now at .385. Ryan Howard had one hit, a massive solo home run in the fourth, his eighth spring home run, putting his spring average up to .293. Chris Coste, now secured as the team’s back-up catcher, got the fourth and final hit in the Phillies’ 10-4 defeat.
The next Phillies spring training game will be played this afternoon at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida, as the Phils host the Boston Red Sox. The game starts at 1:05 pm Eastern.
Spring Training: Phillies come from behind to defeat the Blue Jays, 7-6.
After trailing for most of the game, the Phillies came from behind to defeat the Blue Jays, 7-6, thanks to a three-run ninth inning.
Chan Ho Park started the game for the Phillies, and produced a not too good outing which may hurt his changes in his battle with J.A. Happ for the last spot in the startingrotation. Park pitched four innings, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four Blue Jays. Robert Mosebach, who is fighting for a spot in the bullpen, follows, giving up a run on two hits and a walk in one inning of work. Chad Durbin follows him with a 1-2-3 inning, getting two strikeouts. Ryan Madson follows with a scoreless inning of his own, giving up a hit. Gary Majewski pitches two innings, giving up two runs on four hit and a walk as he strikes out a batter, while picking up the win, thanks to the Phillies scoring three runs in the top of the ninth. His spring training record is now 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA.
The Phillies’ bats collected thirteen hits today, with Jayson Werth, Pedro Feliz and Carlos Ruiz leading the way with two hits each, with one of Werth’s two hits being a solo home run. Miguel Cairo, Jason Ellison, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Eric Bruntlett, Rich Thompson and Chris Coste each got a hit, with Utley’s hit being a two-run home run. Utley would knock in three runs in the game, while Bruntlett knocks in two and Werth and Thompson knocks in a run each. Both Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino returned to the lineup after their stint with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Both players went 0 for 2 with a walk each while Rollins crossed the plate with a run.
In other Phillies’ news, Cole Hamels, who pitched in a minor league game at Clearwater, is expected to pitch on April 10 against the Colorado Rockies in Denver, the Phils’ fourth game of the season, while Brett Myers will pitch opening night at Citizens Bank Park against the Atlanta Braves on April 5, to be followed by Jamie Moyer and Joe Blanton.
The Phillies will take the day off tomorrow before facing the New York Yankees on Thursday afternoon for the second time this week, this time from Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida. Game time will be at 1:05 pm.

In Grapefruit League play yesterday afternoon, the Phillies played the Cardinals to a 2-2, 10-innings tie, thanks to a Tyler Greene throwing error in the sixth inning.
Pitching prospect Carlos Carrasco started the game for the Phils, giving up two runs, with both runs coming in on a two-run home run by Rick Ankiel in the third, on three hits and two walks. Chad Durbin follows him to the mound, pitching an inning and a third of shut out ball, giving up no hits while walking two batters and striking out one. Ryan Madson then takes the mound, giving up no runs on a hit while striking out one in an inning and two thirds of work. Mike Koplove takes over, and pitches an inning and a third of shut out ball, giving up only one hit and a walk as he strikes out one batter. Jake Woods takes the mound in the tenth, giving up only one hit as he keeps the Cardinals from scoring a run, as the Phillies play their second tie in three games. Although Carrasco is likely not going north with the main team, he is likely to get sent to Lehigh Valley for more seasoning, and possible call up if something happens to someone on the main team during the season.
Among the batters, the Phils had a total of nine hits, with four batters having two hits apiece: Eric Bruntlett, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Geoff Jenkins, with one of Howard’s hits being a solo home run, his sixth home run of the spring. Carlos Ruiz had the Phils other hit. Howard had the Phils only RBI of the game, while Utley scored the second Phils’ run. Now having played in three Grapefruit League games, Utley, who appears to be ready to play second base on Opening Night, has a .333 batting average, while Howard has increased his average to .310 with his two hits.
The Phillies next spring training game is presently in progress with the Minnesota Twins at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida, with the Phils’ trailing the Twins, 2-0, after at least one half-inning of play.

In Grapefruit League play, the Phils miss a chance at winning two straight games as they play to a tie game with the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday before defeating the Florida Marlins yesterday afternoon.
On Wednesday, the Phils played the Toronto Blue Jays to a 7-7 tie at Bright House Field in Clearwater. Their starter, J.A.Happ, pitches four good innings, although later saying that he was disappointed with his outing. Happ would give up three runs on three hits, with two of them being home runs, a two-run shot to Bradley Emaus in the third and a solo home run to Jason Lane in the fourth. Happ also gives up a walk while striking out two. Gary Majewski takes over for two innings, giving up a run on two hits and a walk while striking out one. Scott Eyre follows, pitching an inning, giving up no runs on one hit and a walk. Ryan Madson goes onto the mound next, pitching a 1-2-3 inning. Joe Bisenius pitches the ninth inning, allowing three runs to cross the plate, leading to a 7-7 tie, as he gives up three hits and walking two while striking out a batter as he blows the save opportunity.
Among the batters, the Phillies would score seven runs on seven hits. Jayson Werth leads the attack with two hits, knocking in three runs with a three-run home run, while also getting a double. Blanton started the game for the Phils, going six innings, as he gives up only one hit while striking out three batters. Brad Lidge follows Blanton, pitching an inning, giving up no runs on two hits as he strikes out one batter. Clay Condrey then pitches an inning, giving up the Marlins’ only run on two hits. The Phillies would get only six hits in the game. Jason Donald, Ryan Howard, Geoff Jenkins, Miguel Cairo, Marcus Giles and Chris Coste would each get a hit, with Howard and Giles’ hits being doubles. Howard, Werth, Giles and Coste would each knock in a run, with Werth’s RBI being a sac fly. Ever since getting back into the lineup, Werth has batted .333 in Grapefruit League play, while a much slimer Howard has so far batted .282 with five spring home runs and fifteen RBIs.
The Phils are presently playing the Cardinals in Grapefruit League play, with the Phils presently trailing 2-1, with Howard hitting his sixth spring home run.
Meanwhile, team ace Cole Hamels did some extended long toss yesterday, saying that his elbow felt fine. There’s a possibility that he might be able to pitch in a Grapefruit League game next week.

Chan Ho Park, the Phils’ starter, who continues to battle for the fifth and final spot in the starting rotation, had a strong start as he went four and two-third innings, giving up only three hits to the redbirds while striking out six, as he used his pitches effectively to baffle the Cardinals’ batters. Clay Condrey relieves him in the fifth, pitching an inning and a third of shut out ball, although needing to pitch his way out of a jam in the sixth with a runner on second, Albert Pujols who had gotten on base with a double, with only one out, as he gives up only a hit and a walk while striking out one. Antonio Bastardo follows him with two innings of relief, allowing a run to score in the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Brendan Ryan, knocking in Joe Thurston from second base, who was pinch running for Khalil Greene, who had earlier doubled, as Carlos Ruiz was unable to hold onto Raul Ibanez’s throw to the plate, which at the time tied the score at one run apiece. Bastardo would go on to give up two hits while striking out two. Joe Bisenius would pitch the ninth, pitching a 1-2-3 inning, and picking up the win when the Phils scored the winning run in the bottom half of the inning. His spring training record is now 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA.
The Phillies batters had nine hits in the game. Jayson Werth would get the Phils’ first hit as he hits a solo home run in the first inning, his second home run in two straight games, giving the Phils a quick 1-0 lead. Werth would have two hits in the game, as would Greg Dobbs and Cairo. Ibanez, Geoff Jenkins and Ellison, who would knock in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, all had one hit each. Also, Chase Utley would start the game for the Phils at second base, going 0 for 2 as he stayed in the game for four innings, while Pedro Feliz would play at third, also going 0 for 2.
In other Phillies’ new, Cole Hamels will go back to Philadelphia tonight to have his elbow checked tomorrow morning for tightness. No serious problem is expected, but the Phils are just being cautious with their ace.
The Phillies are presently playing the New York Yankees in Grapefruit League play.

Jamie Moyer started the game for the Phillies, pitching his typical kind of game, as he would go five innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits and a walk while making some of the Rays batters look silly. J.A. Happ, who is still impressing in the race for the final spot in the starting rotation, would pitch the final three innings, giving up what would turn out to be the game winner, a solo home run to Gabe Kapler in the sixth, on four hits and a walk while striking out a batter. His excellent performances are presently putting him in the driver seat for the fifth starter spot in the rotation. Moyer would take the lost, with his Spring Training record falling to 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA.
Batting-wise, Rays’ pitching would silence the Phillies’ bat, giving up only three hits while striking out seven batters. Miguel Cairo would get two of the Phillies’ three hits, going 2 for 3 in the game and scoring a run. Andy Tracy would get the other hit, a two-out solo home run in the ninth inning. Ryan Howard would knock in the Phils other run, as he hits a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the seventh.
The Phillies continue Grapefruit League play with a home game in Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida with the Pittsburgh Pirates, that is presently in progress.

The Phillies came close, but end up losing to the Braves at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida, 12-10. The Phils’ starter, Kyle Kendrick, had his second straight bad start as he gets rough up by the Braves in two of his three innings plus four batters worth of work, as he gives up eight runs on ten hits, with two of them being a pair of two-run home runs to Clint Sammons, a walk and a balk as he strikes out two batters. Gary Majewski, who is fighting for a spot in the bullpen, follows, pitching one inning where he gives up two runs, only one of which was earned, thanks to a Ryan Howard error, on three hits. Scott Eyre then follows with a scorless inning, giving up a hit and a walk while stricking out one batter. Ryan Madson then works an inning, giving up a run on three hits as he strikes out two batters. Jake Woods then pitches one inning, also giving up a run on two hit while striking out a batter. Dave Borkowski and Joe Bisenius then pitches an inning each, with both pitchers giving up a hit while Bisenius also walks a batter. Kendrick takes the lost, as his Grapefruit League record drops to 1-1 while his ERA rises to 14.29.
In a losing effort the Phillies get fifteen hits, with Jason Donald leading the way as he goes 3 for 4 with a double, scoring two runs, followed by Raul Ibanez, Greg Dobbs, and John Mayberry, Jr, who would each get two hits in the game. Mayberry’s two hits were a double and a solo home run, as he knocks in two runs, continuing to impress with his .290 spring batting average. Ibanez would also knock in two runs and score a run, while Dobbs would knock in a run. Jorge Velandia, Howard, Jason Ellison, Paul Hoover, a triple, Matt Stairs and Miguel Cairo, a solo home run, would get the other Phillies hits. Howard would knock in two runs, increasing his total to 10 RBIs, as his hit .292 this spring. Valendia, Jayson Werth and Cairo would knock in the other runs.
The Phillies, after falling behind 10-1 after three and a half innings, would slowly chip away at Atlanta’s lead before finally losing the game in the ninth inning, showing that they are still able to comeback against their opponents, as they have done during the two previous seasons. Meanwhile, with this outing, Kendrick appears to be pitching himself out of the fifth starter position in the starting rotation, leaving it as a two man race between Chan Ho Park and J.A. Happ.
The next Phillies Spring Training game will be tomorrow afternoon against the American League Champions Tampa Bay Rays at Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte, Florida. The game will start at 1:05 pm.

The Phillies have lost their second straight game in Grapefruit League play as they lose this afternoon to the Cincinnati Reds at Bright House Field, 8-4.
Cole Hamels was the Phils starter and he had not as solid an outing as he did when he pitched against Team Canada last week. Hamels pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs, on a two-run home run to Ryan Hanigan in the third, on only two hits as he struck out three. Andrew Carpenter pitched next, going two and a third innings, giving up only a run, on a solo home run to Yonder Alonso in the fourth, on just two hits while striking out two. Antonio Bastardo followed him with an inning of work, giving up a run, on a solo home run to Daryle Ward, on only one hit as he struck out two. Justin Lehr would take the mound next, and give up four runs on four hits, including a grand slam home run to Chris Valaika, and a walk as he struck out just one batter. Robert Mosebach and Sergio Escalona would each pitch an inning, each throwing a scoreless frame, with neither pitcher giving up a hit while striking out 3 (Mosebach 2, Escalona 1). Lehr is the losing pitcher, with his Grapefruit League record being 0-1 with a 27.00 ERA.
The Phillies had nine hits in today’s game, with Jason Donald leading the team as he went 3 for 4, all singles. Ryan Howard followed with two hits, including a solo home run in the fourth inning. Jayson Werth, Geoff Jenkins, Miguel Cairo and Lou Marson would each contribute a hit, with Jenkins’ hit being a solo home run in the second. Raul Ibanez got the Phils other RBI.
The Phillies’ record is now 4-6 in Grapefruit League play.

Spring Training: Three games, three different results.
Starting on Friday night, the Phils played three Grapefruit League games, winning one and losing three, putting their Grapefruit League games record at 4-5.
On Friday night, they played a night game with the Toronto Blue Jays, losing a close game, 4-3. Chan Ho Park started the game for the Phillies, pitching four strong innings, giving up only an earned run on three hits as he struck out four. Yorman Bazardo followed him for an inning, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out a batter. Gary Majewski next came in to pitch two strong innings, as he struck out two batters, continuing to impress. Lastly, Sergio Escalona came in to pitch an inning, giving up a run on one hit and a walk while striking out one, becoming the losing pitching. His Grapefruit league record is now 0-1 with a 15.43 ERA.
Batting-wise, the Phillies had seven hits, with Greg Dobbs and Pablo Ozuna leading the way with two hits each, while Eric Bruntlett, Raul Ibanez, and Geoff Jenkins would each get a hit, with Jenkins knocking in all three Phillies’ runs.
On Saturday, the Phils played the Detroit Tigers at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida, defeating the Tigers, 8-2. Jamie Moyer started the game for the Phillies, pitching four strong innings, as he gave up only one earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five, with the run coming in on a home run. J.A. Happ would follow, pitching three strong innings as he stay on pace with Park in the battle for the final spot in the starting rotation. The batters would get only five hits, but making them count when they needed to. Bruntlett, Ryan Howard, John Mayberry Jr., Jayson Werth and Jason Donald would else get a hit, with Howard and Mayberry’s hits being a pair of three-run home runs. Jenkins and Lou Marson would bring in the other two Phillies runs.
Yesterday, the Phillies played the Braves, losing that game,7-2. Joe Blanton started the game for the Phils, pitching three strong innings, before giving up a run in the fourth as the Braves batters in that inning proceeded to go first pitch hitting to knock in a run. Blanton would give up a run on four hits and a walk. Carlos Carrasco would follow and have two very unproductive innings as he gave up five runs, only three of which were earned, on six hits. This, along with his previous bad outing, will hurt his changes in the battle for the fifth spot in the Phils starting rotation. Clay Condrey would pitch next, putting up a 1-2-3 inning. Ryan Madson pitched next, giving up a run on four hits while striking out one. Carrasco takes the lost, his record now 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA.
The Phils got eight hits yesterday, with Marcus Giles and Donald leading the way with two hits apiece. Werth, Bruntlett, Ronny Paulino and J.J. Fumaniak would collect the other four hits. Donald and Paulino would knock in the two Phillies’ runs.
In the battle for the fifth spot in the rotation, Park and Happ appears to have turned it into a two man race, while Carrasco has been showing that he still need to improve on the mental aspect of his game before he can start facing major league level batters. Meanwhile, the man whose job the other three are shooting for, Kyle Kendrick, needs to not lose his head when things seem to go bad for him in games.
Presently, the Phillies are playing the Reds at Bright House Field, with the score tied 3-3 after five innings.
Exhibition Game: Team USA defeats the world champs, 9-6, as Kendrick gets done in by fellow teammates.

Despite a late surge, the Phillies fell to Team USA this afternoon, with the final score, 9-6. Kyle Kendrick, who started the game for the Phils, recorded outs on seven of the first eight batter whom he faced before the roof fell on him. After getting out the first batter in the top of the third inning, with the Phils ahead 1-0, he would give up a single to Shane Victorino, who was playing center field for Team USA. Kendrick would then commit an error on a pickoff attempt, allowing Victorino to move to second base. Jimmy Rollins, who was starting as Team USA’s shortstop, then follows with a single, knocking in Victorino to tie the game. After a Dustin Pedroia single moves Rollins to second base, Chipper Jones would cap the inning off with a three-run home run to left, to give Team USA the lead, 4-1. Kendrick is then taken out for Antonio Bastardo, who finally ends the inning. Bastardo, in the fourth, gives up back-to-back home runs to Ryan Braun and Brian McCann, making it a 6-1 Team USA lead. He then gives up a three-run homer to Adam Dunn in the fifth, giving team USA a 9-1 lead. The rest of the pitching staff would keep Team USA quiet. Kendrick pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out one. Bastardo pitches two and one-third innings, giving up five runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two. Clay Condrey, Ryan Madson and Blaine Neal combines for four shut outs innings, giving up just two hits (Condrey and Neal one hit apiece) and three walks (Madson (2), Neal (1), while striking out 2 (Neal). All but one of the runs were given up on the long ball. Kendrick would take the lost for the Phils.
The Phillies’ batter scores a run in the first as Eric Bruntlett hits an RBI double, knocking in Marcus Giles, who has earlier walked, giving the Phils an early lead. After falling behind 9-1, Ryan Howard makes it a 9-4 game in the bottom of the fifth, as he hits a three-run home run. Jason Donald’s solo home run in the six reduces Team USA’s lead to 9-5. Mike Cervenak knocks in the Phils’ final run in the eighth. The Phils would get twelve hits, with Lou Marson leading the team with two hits. Giles, Bruntlett, Raul Ibanez, Howard, John Mayberry Jr., Geoff Jenkins, Cervenak, Donald, J.J. Fumaniak and Jorge Velandia would each record a hit.
Playing for Team USA, Rollins would go 1 for 2 with a single and a run scored while Victorino would go 1 for 3 with a single and a walk and a run scored. Pitcher Joe Bisenius would pitch one inning, giving up a run on three hits while striking out one.
The next Phillies Spring Training game will be tomorrow night at Dunedin Stadium in Dunedin, Florida, against the Toronto Blue Jays. The game will start at 7 pm Eastern. The Phils will also play a ‘B’ game with the Blue Jays at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida. That game will start at 12 noon.
