The Reds took the lead in the first as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Scott Rolen hits an RBI single, knocking in Joey Votto, who had just doubled, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead. The Phils tried to make it a 3-1 lead in the third as, with Jimmy Rollins on second base, after hitting a double, and with one man out, he tried to score on a single to center by Chase Utley, Utley’s first hit of the season, but he was gunned down down at the plate by center fielder Drew Stubbs, 8-2, for the second out of the inning, while Utley moved up to second base on the throw. The Phils then finally made it a 3-1 lead in the fourth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Ruiz hits an RBI double, knocking in Ibanez, who had earlier singled. The Reds then tied the game up at three-all in the fifth as, with runners on second and third, and with nobody out, Brandon Phillips hits a two-run bloop single, scoring Jonny Cueto, who had earlier walked, then stopped at third on Stubbs’ ground-rule double, and Stubbs, who had just hit a ground-rule double. The Reds then took the lead in the ninth as, with the bases loaded, via a bunt single by Stubbs, who then reached second on Ryan Madson’s throwing error to first, an intentional walk to Votto and then an infield single by Rolen, as he beat Placido Polanco’s throw to first, while Stubbs moved up to third base, and Votto reached second, and with two man out, Jay Bruce hits a bases clearing double, scoring Stubbs, Votto and Rolen, giving the Reds a 6-3 lead. That would end up being the final score as Francisco Cordero recorded his ninth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Carlos Ruiz followed with two hits, a single and a double, as he knocked in a run, lifting his average to .256. Jimmy Rollins (Double), Ryan Howard (Double) and Chase Utley (Single) had the other three Phils’ hits. Dom Brown knocked in the third Phils’ run with a sac fly. The offense, after starting out fine, and missing an opportunity to score a fourth run because of Rollins being thrown out at the plate, seems to have stopped hitting after the fourth inning, thus allowing the Reds to win it in the ninth.

The Phils are unable to get started early before losing to the Braves, 5-3.
The Phils are not able to come from behind as they fall to the Braves, 5-3.
The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the first as Martin Prado hits a lead-off home run, his sixth home run of the year. The Braves then made it a 2-0 lead as Nate McLouth followed him with a solo home run, his third home run of the season. The Phils then cut the Braves’ lead in the sixth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Jimmy Rollins hits an RBI double, knocking in pinch hitter Michael Martinez, who had earlier singled, in the process breaking up Jair Jurrjens’ no-hit bid after five and two-thirds innings, making it a 2-1 Braves’ lead, before being thrown out at third as he tried to move up on the throw, 9-3-6-5, for the third out. The Braves increased their lead in their half of the inning as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, David Ross hits an RBI bunt single, scoring Dan Uggla, who had earlier walked, then moved up to second on Freddie Freeman’s infield single, beating Rollins’ throw to second base, and then moved up to third on Alex Gonzalez’s fly out, giving the Braves a 3-1 lead, while sending Freeman, who had earlier singled, to second base. Then two batters later, with the bases now loaded, as Jurrjens walked, with both Freeman and Ross moving up a base, and with still two men out, Prado hits a two-run single, knocking in both Freeman and Ross, giving the Braves a 5-1 lead, while sending Jurrjens on to third. The Phils got a run back in the eighth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Wilson Valdez hits an RBI double, knocking in Raul Ibanez, who had earlier walked, cutting the Braves’ lead to 5-2. Two batters later, now with runners on second and third as pinch hitter Carlos Ruiz was hit by the pitch, and then both runners moved up a base on Ross’ passed ball, and with still one man out, the Phils then made it a 5-3 Braves’ lead on an RBI ground out by John Mayberry, Jr., 5-3, scoring Valdez. The Phils lose their first game of the season as Cole Hamels’ problem with the Mets continue, as the Phils lose, 7-1.
Cole Hamels troubles with the Mets continue as he is knocked out of the box by the Mets starting pitcher in a six-run third inning, as the Phils drop one to the Mets, 7-1.
The Mets, after blowing a two on, no out, situation in the first, took a 2-0 lead in the third as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Chirs Young, a bunt single by Jose Reyes, that was not fielded cleanly by Cole Hamels, allowing Young to get to second base, and a walk to Angel Pagan, moving both runners up a base, and with noone out, David Wright hits a two-run single, knocking in both Young and Reyes, and sending Pagan to third. Two batters later, with runners now on second and third, after Wright had stolen second base, and with one man out, Pagan scored on a passed ball, giving the Mets a 3-0 lead, while Wright would move up to third base. The Mets then made it a 4-0 lead as, with two men on, after Scott Hairston had walked, and with still only one man out, Wright scored on Ike Davis’ RBI single, while Hairston would stop at second base. The Mets then took a 5-0 lead as Brad Emaus hits an RBI single, scoring Hairston, while sending Davis up to second base. Two batters later, with two men on, and now with two men out, the Mets made it a 6-0 lead as Young hits an RBI single, scoring Davis, while sending Emaus to second base, while knocking Hamels out of the ball game, as he was unable to get past the third inning. The Phils would get a run back in the fifth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI double, knocking in Wilson Valdez, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, making it a 6-1 Mets’ lead, while sending pinch hitter Michael Martinez, who had earlier walked, to third base. The Mets would get the run back in the sixth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Hairston hits an RBI single, knocking in Wright, who had earlier doubled, making it a 7-1 Mets’ lead, while Hairston would move up to second on the late throw to home plate. That would be the final score, as the Phils would be unable to mount a rally, thanks in part to the wind denying Ben Francisco a chance for a pair of home runs and three RBIs, as it knocked down a couple of deep hit fly balls to left.
Cole Hamels (0-1, 20.25) took the lost as he pitched only two and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on seven hits and two walks, while he struck out three. Kyle Kendrick pitched two and a third scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk, while striking out one. David Herndon followed with an inning, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, while striking out one. J.C. Romero, Danys Baez and Antonio Bastardo combined for three scoreless innings, giving up two hits (Romero (1), Baez (1)), while striking out two (Romero (1), Bastardo (1)) between them. Chris Young (1-0, 1.69) got the win as he pitched five and a third innings, giving up a run on five hits and four walks, while striking out seven, as he effectively pitched himself out of a couple of jams. D.J. Carrasco pitched an inning and two-thirds, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Tim Byrdak and Bobby Parnell combined for two scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Parnell), while striking out one (Byrdak) between them. The Phils had just seven hits in the game, with Raul Ibanez leading the team with two hits, both singles, as he raised his batting average to .267. Placido Polanco (Double, RBI), Jimmy Rollins (Single), Wilson Valdez (Single), pinch hitter Pete Orr (Single) and pinch hitter Ross Gload (Single), had the other five Phils’ hits, while Ben Francisco was robbed of a pair of home runs as the wind knocked down both of his hard shots to left field.
The Phils (3-1, T-1st) will continue their three games series with the Mets (3-1, T-1st) with a night game at Citizens Bank Park. Game time is 7:05 EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Joe Blanton (0-0, -.–), who is coming off a 9-6 2010, with a 4.82 ERA, finishing the season strong. He will be trying to get the Phils back on the winning track, while evening the series. The Mets will counter with Mike Pelfrey (0-1, 10.38), who is coming off a bad opening day start against the Marlins on April 1, as he pitched four and a third innings, giving up five runs on four hits and four walks, while he struck out two Marlins, in the Mets’ 6-2 lost. He will be trying to even his record, and give the Mets early control of first place. The Phils will be trying to regroup after last night’s lost, to regain sole possession of first place in the East.
In other news, Chase Utley did a little jogging before yesterday’s game to test the progress of his right leg. He is progressing, but he is still going to be out for a while. Shane Victorino went back into the lineup yesterday, but sadly went 0 for 5, with three strikeouts. During the weekend, Kyle Kendrick’s home in Washington state was broken into, with a number of items, including both his 2008 World Series and his 2009 NL rings, being stolen. Hopefully, the culprits will be found quickly and brought to justice.
Post No. 800: Phils lose close one thanks in part to a bad call by the first base ump, as they drop one to the Astros, 3-2.
Thanks in part to a bad call by the first base umpire, the Phils drop a close one to the Astros as former Phil Brett Myers come back to stifle his ex-teammates, 3-2.
The Astros took the lead in the first as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Hunter Pence hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Michael Bourn, who had earlier singled, stole second base and then moved up to third on Angel Sanchez’s single, giving the Astros a 1-0 lead, while sending Sanchez, who had just singled, on to second base. The Astros then tried to increase their lead as Sanchez tried to score on Carlos Lee’s double, but was instead gun down at home plate, 8-4-2, for the inning’s second out. The Phils tied it up at one-all in the third as Carlos Ruiz hits a lead-off home run, his sixth home run of the year. The Phils then took the lead later in the inning as, with two men on, and with one man out, Chase Utley hits an RBI single, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier singled, before moving up to second on Lee’s fielding error, moved up to third on a fielder’s choice grounder hit by Shane Victorino, as Joe Blanton, who had earlier singled, and had gone to third on Rollins’ single, is thrown out at home, 3-2, giving the Phils’ a 2-1 lead, while Victorino, who was safe at first on the fielder’s choice, moved up to second base. The Phils tried to add to their lead in the sixth as, with a runner on second, Jayson Werth, via a double, and with two men out, after Raul Ibanez had just struck out, swinging, the Astros proceeded to intentionally walk Ruiz, to get to Wilson Valdez, but, after ball four is thrown, Astros catcher Humberto Quintero threw a strike to second base, picking off Werth, 2-6, who’s mind appeared to have been somewhere else, to end the inning. This base running blunder might have come back to haunt the Phils, as, in the eighth, with two men on, and with two men out, the Astros took the lead as Lee hits a two-run single, scoring pinch hitter Jason Michaels, who had earlier singled, had moved up to second on Bourn’s bunt single, and moved to third on Sanchez’s sacrifice bunt, 5-4, and Bourn, who had gotten on base with a bunt single, when he had in fact went out of the base line to avoid being tagged by Ryan Howard, but was called safe by the first base umpire, which lead to a long argument by Charlie Manuel before he was ejected from the game for arguing the call, and then went to second on Sanchez’s bunt, giving the Astros a 3-2 lead. That would end up being the final score as Brandon Lyon put down the Phils in the ninth for his seventh save of the season.
Joe Blanton receives a no-decision as he pitches seven strong innings, giving up just one run on six hits, while striking out nine. Ryan Madson records his fourth blown save of the year before taking the lost as he pitches an inning, giving up two runs on three hits, while striking out a batter. His record is now 4-2 with a 3.58 ERA. Brad Lidge pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while he strikes out one. Brett Myers gets the win as he pitches seven inning, giving up two runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out nine. His record is now 9-7 with a 3.08 ERA. Tim Byrdak collects his sixth hold of the year as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a hit. Brandon Lyon receives his seventh save of the year as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.
The Phils had ten hits in the game, with Jimmy Rollins and Jayson Werth both leading the team with two hits each, with Rollins’ two hits being singles, while Werth’s hits were a single and a double. Chase Utley, Raul Ibanez, Carlos Ruis, Wilson Valdez, Joe Blanton and pinch hitter Dom Brown had the other six Phils’ hits, all singles, except for Ruiz’s solo home run, with Utley knocking in the other Phil’s run. The offense did not get the much needed key hit last night.

In his last three starts, his record is 0-3, as he pitched twenty innings, giving up seven runs on eighteen hits and three walks, while striking out twenty-four. He will be hoping that the bats will finally give him some runs so that he can finally end his win-less streak. Roy Halladay does his job as the Phils defeat the Nats in a tight 1-0 win.
Roy Halladay got out of several jams before the Phils finally defeat the Nats 1-0.
The Nats try to take the lead in the first as they loaded up the bases via a lead-off double by Nyjer Morgan, who then went to third on a balk, and walks to Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman, and with one man out, Phils’ starter Roy Halladay got out of the inning by getting Roger Bernadina to hit into a 4-6-3 doubleplay, wiping out Zimmerman at second base. The Phils tried to score in their half of the first with runners on second and third, via a walk to Placido Polanco and a double to Jayson Werth, with Polanco stopping at third, and with two men out, but the Nats’ starter Jason Marquis got out of the inning by striking out Raul Ibanez swinging. The Phils then took the lead in the third as, with two men on, and with two men out, Ibanez hits an RBI double, scoring Chase Utley, who had earlier walked and then moved up to second when Werth walked, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Werth, who had earlier walked, stopped at third. The Nats would constantly threathen to tie up the game, with their biggest threat being in the seventh as, with two men on, via a bunt single to Ian Desmond, and a walk to Dunn, sending Desmond to second base, and with one man out, on a 1-1 count to Zimmerman, Desmond broke for third, as Zimmerman hits a liner to left, which was caught by Ibanez for the inning’s second out. Desmond headed back to second as Ibanez threw back to second in an attempt to double Desmond up, but throwing it wide. But Utley, after catching the ball, stayed with Desmond as he slid off the bag, tagging him out for the third out of the inning for a lined out-doubleplay. That would end up being the next to last threat by the Nats as, in the ninth, with a runner on second, Desmond, via a double, and with two men out, Brad Lidge nailed down his seventeenth save of the year by striking out Dunn, swinging, for the final out.
Roy Halladay gets the win as he pitches seven shut out innings, giving up eight hits and three walks, while striking out five. His record is now 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA. The Phils had only four hits in the game, a single by Chase Utley, a double by Jayson Werth, an RBI double by Raul Ibanez and a single by Carlos Ruiz. The Phils offense was outhit last night, feeling very lucky that their ace came through.

A ninth inning melt down by the Cubs’ closer leads to the Phils beating the Cubs, 4-1.
The Cubs’ closer Carlos Marmol had a melt down in the top of the ninth, allowing the Phils to come back to win the game, as the Phils defeated the Cubs, 4-1.
The game for the first six and a half innings was a pitchers’ duel between Phils’ starter Cole Hamels, who in six scoreless innings would give up six hits and two walks, while striking out six Cubbies, while Cubs’ starter Randy Wells would pitch seven shut out innings, giving up seven hits and two walks, while striking out five Phils. The Cubs would finally take the lead in the bottom of the seventh as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Stalin Castro, who had earlier doubled, and then moved to third on pinch hitter Xavier Nady’s ground out, 6-3, would score on Ryan Theriot’s bunt single on a grounder to Hamels, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead. After neither team scored in the eighth, the Cubs sent their closer, Carlos Marmol, to the mound to wrap up the game. Instead, he had a melt down on the mound. After getting out the lead-off batter, he walks pinch hitter Brian Schneider. He then walks pinch hitter Ross Gload, sending Schneider up to second. After getting Shane Victorino to strike out swinging for the inning’s second out, the just returned Placido Polanco followed by hitting an RBI single, scoring Schneider, who crossed the plate sliding head first as the Cubs’ catcher Geovany Soto is unable to hold onto the throw from the left fielder, tying the game up at one-all, while Gload would go to third on the throw, while Polanco moved up to second. One batter later, Marmol would walk his third batter of the inning, Jimmy Rollins, loading the bases, but Soto allowed ball four to get past him and go to the backstop, allowing Gload to score on the wild pitch, to give the Phils a 2-1 lead, while Polanco would move up to third, putting runners on the corners. After Rollins steals second base, Ryan Howard is intentionally walked, to load the bases. Jayson Werth then follows with the fifth walk of the inning, scoring Polanco from third, to give the Phils a 3-1 lead, while both Rollins and Howard both moved up a base. That would be it for Marmol, as he is taken out of the game and replaced by James Russell. Raul Ibanez welcome Russell by hitting an infield single to first baseman Derek Lee, as he had no one to throw to at first, scoring Rollins from third, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead, while moving both Howard and Werth up a base. After pinch hitter Cody Ransom hits into a force out, 6-4, wiping out Ibanez to end the inning, the Phils handed the ball to their closer Brad Lidge for the save. Lidge proceeded to record his seventh save of the year, by getting Theriot to fly out to right for the game’s final out.
Cole Hamels receives a no-decision as he pitches seven innings, giving up a run on eight hits and two walks, while he strikes out six. His record is now 2-2 with a 2.91 ERA. James Russell pitches to just one batter, giving up a hit. Andrew Cashner pitches a third of an inning, giving out the only man that he would face.
The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Shane Victorino, Jayson Werth and Raul Ibanez each leading the team with two hits apiece, with Victorino and Ibanez each having two hits, all singles, with Ibanez knocking in a run, while Werth had a single and a double, knocking in a run on a bases loaded walk. Placido Polanco, Ryan Howard and Wilson Valdez had the other three Phil’s hits, all singles, with Polanco knocking in a run, as the Phil’s other run came in on a wild pitch. The Phils’ offense is still trying to break out of its scoring and hitting slump, as they did not get a key hit until the ninth during Marmol’s melt down.
The Phillies (48-42, 2nd NL East) will conclude their four-game series with the Cubs (41-51, 4th NL Central) with a night game tonight, trying to end the series with a series split. The game will be played at Wrigley Field and will start at 8:05 pm Eastern (7:05 pm Central). The Phils will send to the mound their ace Roy Halladay (10-7, 2.19), who is coming off a nine innings no-decision against the Reds on July 10, as he gave up only five hits and a walk, while striking out nine, in the Phils’ 1-0 extra-innings win. In his last three starts, he went 1-1 with a no-decision, as he pitched twenty-six innings, giving up five runs on twenty-three hits and two walks, while striking out twenty-six batters. He will be trying to collect his eleventh win of the year, while hoping the bats will give him some real runs support. In his last three starts, his record is 2-0 with a no-decision, as he pitched sixteen innings, giving up five runs, four of which were earned, on fifteen hits and ten walks, while striking out sixteen. He will be trying to even up his record. The Phils will be trying to end the four game series with a split before going on to St. Louis to meet the Cardinals for four.

The Phils cut the Indians’ lead to 2-1 as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Ryan Howard hits into a 3-6 doubleplay, scoring Placido Polanco, who had earlier singled, and had gone to third on Chase Utley’s single, crossing home plate before Indians’ shortstop Jason Donald was able to tag out Utley, who had earlier singled, at second base for the inning’s final out. The Phils tied the game up at two-all in the second as Jayson Werth hits a lead-off home run, his thirteenth home run of the season. The Indians regained the lead in the third as, with a runner on third and with one man out, Carlos Santana hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Crowe, who had earlier doubled, his second double of the game, and then went to third on Choo’s fly out to center, giving the Indians a 3-2 lead.
