The Phils would finally get a run in the ninth off of a hit and three walks given up by Cubs’ reliever Carlos Marmol, before he would finally put out the fire. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and is to start at 7:05 pm EDT.
The Phils will send to the mound Vance Worley (2-1, 2.16), who is coming off a victory over the D-backs on April 24, as he went six strong innings, giving up only a run on five hits and a walk, while striking out six, in the Phils’ 8-5 win. The Cubs took the lead in the second as, with runners on second and third, and with nobody out, Ian Stewart hits an RBI ground out, 4-3, knocking in Bryan LaHair, who had started the inning off with a ground-rule double, then stopped at third on Jeff Baker’s double, because of his slow speed, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead, while sending Baker, who had just doubled, over to third base. The Cubs increased their lead in the third as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Starlin Castro hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Tony Campana, who had earlier singled, went to second base on Laynce Nix’s missed catch error on Kyle Kenrdick’s pickoff attempt, then went to third on Darwin Barney’s ground out, 4-3, giving the Cubs a 2-0 lead. The Cubs then made it a 3-0 lead in the fourth as, with two men out, Joe Mather hits a solo home run, his first home run of the season. The Cubs added to their lead in the eighth as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Campana, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, before moving up to third on Barney’s sacrifice bunt, 1-3, would score on a fielder’s choice grounder hit by Castro, giving the Cubs a 4-0 lead. Two batters later, after Castro is caught trying to steal second base, 2-6, the Cubs make it a 5-0 as, with a man on second, and with two men out, Baker hits an RBI single, scoring LaHair, who had earlier doubled, his second double of the ballgame. The Phils would finally get on the scoreboard in the ninth as, with the bases loaded, via a walk by pinch hitter Pete Orr, a walk by Jimmy Rollins, moving Orr up to second base, and an infield single by Hunter Pence, moving up both runners, and with two men out, Ty Wigginton forced in a run with an RBI walk, scoring Orr, making it a 5-1 Cubs’ lead, while sending Rollins on to third base and moving Pence up to second base, leaving the bases loaded. That that would end up being the final score as Carlos Marmol finally ended the game by getting Shane Victorino to ground out, 6-3, for the final out.

Jose Contreras pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two. David Herndon pitched two innings, giving up two runs on three hits, while he struck out one. Matt Garza (2-1, 2.67) got the win as he threw seven strong innings, giving up a hit and a walk, while he struck out ten. Rafael Solis pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Carlos Marmol pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit and three walks.

The Cubs’ closer Carlos Marmol had a melt down in the top of the ninth, allowing the Phils to come back to win the game, as the Phils defeated the Cubs, 4-1.
The game for the first six and a half innings was a pitchers’ duel between Phils’ starter Cole Hamels, who in six scoreless innings would give up six hits and two walks, while striking out six Cubbies, while Cubs’ starter Randy Wells would pitch seven shut out innings, giving up seven hits and two walks, while striking out five Phils. The Cubs would finally take the lead in the bottom of the seventh as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Stalin Castro, who had earlier doubled, and then moved to third on pinch hitter Xavier Nady’s ground out, 6-3, would score on Ryan Theriot’s bunt single on a grounder to Hamels, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead. After neither team scored in the eighth, the Cubs sent their closer, Carlos Marmol, to the mound to wrap up the game. Instead, he had a melt down on the mound. After getting out the lead-off batter, he walks pinch hitter Brian Schneider. He then walks pinch hitter Ross Gload, sending Schneider up to second. After getting Shane Victorino to strike out swinging for the inning’s second out, the just returned Placido Polanco followed by hitting an RBI single, scoring Schneider, who crossed the plate sliding head first as the Cubs’ catcher Geovany Soto is unable to hold onto the throw from the left fielder, tying the game up at one-all, while Gload would go to third on the throw, while Polanco moved up to second. One batter later, Marmol would walk his third batter of the inning, Jimmy Rollins, loading the bases, but Soto allowed ball four to get past him and go to the backstop, allowing Gload to score on the wild pitch, to give the Phils a 2-1 lead, while Polanco would move up to third, putting runners on the corners. After Rollins steals second base, Ryan Howard is intentionally walked, to load the bases. Jayson Werth then follows with the fifth walk of the inning, scoring Polanco from third, to give the Phils a 3-1 lead, while both Rollins and Howard both moved up a base. That would be it for Marmol, as he is taken out of the game and replaced by James Russell. Raul Ibanez welcome Russell by hitting an infield single to first baseman Derek Lee, as he had no one to throw to at first, scoring Rollins from third, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead, while moving both Howard and Werth up a base. After pinch hitter Cody Ransom hits into a force out, 6-4, wiping out Ibanez to end the inning, the Phils handed the ball to their closer Brad Lidge for the save. Lidge proceeded to record his seventh save of the year, by getting Theriot to fly out to right for the game’s final out.

Chad Durbin gets the win as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk, while striking out a batter. His record is now 1-1 with a 3.13 ERA. Randy Wells also receives a no-decision, as he pitches seven innings, giving up only seven hits and two walks, while striking out five. Sean Marshall records his twelfth hold, as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up only a walk, while striking out two. Carlos Marmol blew his fourth save attempt, before taking the lost, as he pitches two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on one hit and five walks, while striking out a batter. His record is now 2-2 with a 2.91 ERA. James Russell pitches to just one batter, giving up a hit. Andrew Cashner pitches a third of an inning, giving out the only man that he would face.

The Cubs would tie the game up at one-all in the fifth as, with the bases loaded, via a single to Aramis Ramirez, a walk to Alfonso Soriano, moving Ramirez up to second base, a Starlin Castro ground out, 6-3, which would send Ramirez to third and Soriano to second, and an intentional walk to Geovany Soto, and with two men out, Cubs’ starter Ted Lily receives a walk, forcing in Ramirez, which moving Soriano to third and Soto up to second base. The Phils retook the lead in the sixth as, with a runner on base, and with two men out, Ryan Howard hits a two-run home run, his third in two games and his twentieth home run of the season, knocking in Jayson Werth, who had earlier walked, and then went to second on a Lily wild pitch, to give the Phils a 3-2 lead. The Cubs would tie the game up at three-all in their half of the sixth as, with a runner on second and with two men out, Marlon Byrd hits a two-run home run, his tenth home run of the season, scoring Ramirez, who had earlier doubled. The Cubs would make it 2-0 in the seventh as, with a runner on second, and once again with two outs, Jeff Baker hits a sharp RBI single off the glove of Polanco, scoring Alfonso Soriano, who had earlier doubled. The Phils cut the Cubs lead in the eighth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI ground out, 1-3, scoring Polanco, who had earlier doubled, and then went to third on Utley’s single, making it a 2-1 Cubs’ lead, while moving Utley, who had earlier singled, up to second base. The Cubs would get a pair of insurance runs in the ninth as, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Derrick Lee, Marlon Byrd being hit by the pitch, sending Lee to second, and a walk to Soriano, moving both Lee and Byrd up a base, and with two men out, pinch hitter Xavier Nady hits a two-run pinch hit single, knocking in Lee and Byrd, giving the Cubs a 4-1 lead, while sending Soriano up to second base. That would be the final score as a Phils’ rally in the bottom of the ninth goes nowhere as Carlos Marmol records his seventh save of the season by striking out Shane Victorino with two men on base.

The Phillies’ bat appear to have decided to come out of hiding as they crush the Cubs, 12-5, as they give runs support to Pedro Martinez as he pitched his first game back in the major leagues. Their lead has now gone back up to four and a half games over both the Marlins and the Braves as the Marlins lose to the Astros.
The Phils jumped to a quick lead in the first as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Chase Utley hits an RBI double, knocking in Shane Victorino, who had earlier tripled, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils made it a 2-0 lead as Ryan Howard tripled home Utley. The Cubs would cut the lead in half in the second as, with one man on, and one out, Jeff Baker hits an RBI single, knocking in Kosuke Fukudome, who had earlier doubled, making it a 2-1 Phils lead. The Phils increased their lead in the third as, with a man on, and with nobody out, Victorino hits a two-run home run, his ninth home run of the year, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had just doubled, making it 4-1 Phils. The Phils then busted the game wide open in the fourth. With two men on, and with nobody out, Carlos Ruiz hits an RBI single, scoring Jayson Werth, who had earlier singled, and had moved up to second base on Pedro Feliz’s single, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead, while Feliz who go all the way to third on Cubs’ center fielder Fukudome’s throwing error, while Ruiz would move up to second base. Two batters later, after Phils’ starter Pedro Martinez had grounded out, 4-3, for the inning’s first out, Jimmy Rollins hits a three-run home run, his fifteenth home run of the season, knocking in both Feliz and Ruiz, while giving the Phils an 8-1 lead. Four batters later, with two men on base, and two men out, Raul Ibanez hits a three-run bomb of his own, his twenty-seventh home run of the year, knocking in Utley, who had earlier singled, and Howard, who had just walked, moving Utley to second, as the Phils took an 11-1 lead, while batting around. Two batters later, Feliz would make it a 12-1 Phils lead, as he hit an RBI single, knocking in Werth, who had just doubled. After Ruiz walked, moving Feliz up to second, the Cubs would finally get out of the inning as Martinez struck out swinging. The Cubs got a run back in the fifth as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Koyie Hill, a walk by Sean Marshall and a single by Ryan Theriot, and with nobody out, Milton Bradley hits an RBI single, scoring Hill, making it a 12-2 Phils’ lead, while Marshall and Theriot moved up to third and second respectively. Two batters later, with the bases still loaded and with one man out, Jake Fox hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Marshall, making it a 12-3 Phils’ lead, while also sending Theriot to third. On the play, Victorino, who caught the ball, had a cup of beer thrown at him from the stand by one of the Cubs fans. After the play, Victorino showed his displeasure by looking at the fan, who was quickly removed from the ballpark by security. I don’t know what that idiot was thinking, cause Fox would’ve been called out by the umpires for fan interference if Victorino had dropped the ball. Folks, I don’t want to hear any excuses, cause that guy was a moron, pure and simple!!!! In the ninth, with runners on the corners, and one man out, Aaron Miles hits into an RBI ground out, 3-unassisted, for the inning’s second out, scoring Sam Fuld, who had earlier singled, and had gone to third on Eric Bruntlett’s fielding error of a Hill ground ball, making it a 12-4 Phils’ lead, while Hill, who was safe on Bruntlett’s error, moved up to second base. The next batter, Theriot, then hits an RBI single, scoring Hill, cutting the Phils’ lead down to 12-5. But that would be it as pinch hitter Geovany Soto grounded out, 5-3, for the game’s final out.
Pedro Martinez got the win as he went five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out five in his first start in the majors since last September. His record is now 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA. Chan Ho Park pitched three scoreless innings, as he struck out three. Chad Durbin pitched an inning, giving up two runs, neither of which were earned, on two hits. Jeff Samardzija took the lost, as he pitched only three and a third innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits, as he struck out four. His record is now 1-2 with an ERA of 7.81. Sean Marshall pitched three and a third innings, giving up five runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out four. Aaron Heilman and Carlos Marmol combined for two and a third scorless innings, striking out a batter between them (Marmol).
The Phils exploded for fourteen hits, with each of the regulars having at least one hit. Chase Utley lead the team with three hits, including a double, knocking in a run, while scoring two, as he raised his average to .296. Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Jayson Werth and Pedro Feliz followed with two hits a piece, with Rollins’ hits being a double and a three-run homer, while Victorino’s two hits were a triple and a two-run home run and one of Werth’s two hits was a double. Ryan Howard, Raul Ibanez and Carlos Ruiz each had a hit, with Howard’s hit being a triple and Ibanez’s hit being a three-run home run. Besides the runs knocked in by Utley, Rollins, Victorino and Ibanez, Howard, Feliz and Ruiz each knocked in a run. The Phils had a total of eight extra-base hits in last night’s game (3 (2B), 2 (3B), 3 (HR)). Hopefully, this will mean that the offense has returned.

He is trying to lead the Phils to a sweep over the Cubs. The Cubs will counter with Ryan Dempster (6-5, 4.04), who is coming off a win against the Rockies on August 8, where he went six innings, giving up just two runs on nine hits, while striking out two, in the Cubs’ 6-5 win. He will be trying to avoid the sweep. The Phils are presently leading the Cubs, 5-1, after six innings, trying to perform a sweep of the Cubbies, before going on to Atlanta to see if they can push the Braves back, as well as increase their lead in the NL East.
Update: Turns out security threw out the wrong person last night, as the moron who threw the beer let someone else take the rap for his misdeed. But, both the Cubs and Victorino have filed a complaint against the toad, while his face is getting plastered all over the place. Hopefully it’ll be only a matter of time before the Chicago boys in blue come knocking at his door.

In the thirteenth, Jeff Samardzija began his second inning of work for the Cubs. Shane Victorino started the inning off for the Phils by flying out to left for out number one. Chase Utley followed by flying out to center for the second out. Ryan Howard than took a four pitch walk, putting a runner on first, with two outs. Raul Ibanez then followed by working a walk, putting runners on first and second, as Howard moved up to second base, putting the winning run in scoring position for the second time in the last three innings. Jayson Werth came up to the plate, and with the count one and one, he hits a changeup into the left field seats for a walk-off three-run home run, his twenty-first home run of the year, scoring Howard and Werth before him, and giving the Phils a 4-1 win.
Joe Blanton received a no-decision as he went seven strong innings, giving up just one run on five hit, while he struck out four. Ryan Madson, Brad Lidge and Chan Ho Park combined for five 1-2-3 innings, as they struck out six Cubs (Madson (1), Park (5)). Clay Condrey got the win as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning. His record is now 6-2 with a 3.50 ERA. Rick Harden also received a no-decision, as he also pitched seven strong innnings, giving up only one run on four hits and two walks, while he struck out six. Carlos Marmol, Angel Guzman, Sean Marshall and Aaron Heilman combined for four innings of shut out ball, giving up only one hit (Marmol) and three walks (Marmol, Marshall and Heilman one walk each), while striking out six (Marmol (4), Marshall (1), Heilman (1)). Jeff Samardzija took the lost as he pitched one and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on one hit and two walks. His record is now 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA.
The Phils had only six hits in the game, with Jimmy Rollins and Jayson Werth leading the way with two hits a piece, with one of Rollins’ hits being a solo home run, while one of Werth’s hits was the gaming winning three-run home run. Shane Victorino and Pedro Feliz had the other two hits, both singles. The victory give the Phils a seven games winning streak at home, a winning record at home for the first time this year, their fourth straight series win at home, their fifth straight series win, and their tenth win in a row.
The Phillies (53-38, 1st National League East) will conclude their three-games series with the Cubs (47-45, 2nd-T National League Central) with an afternoon game, already in progress at Citizens Bank Park. The Phils are sending to the mound Jamie Moyer (9-6, 5.58), who is coming off a gem against the Marlins on July 16, as he pitched seven strong innings, giving up no runs on one hit and a walk, while striking out four, in the Phils’ 4-0 win. He will be going for win number ten on the season. The Cubs will counter with Carlos Zambrano (6-4, 3.36), who is coming off a win against the Nationals on July 17, as he went five innings, giving up no runs on four hits and four walks, while striking out six in the Cubs’ 3-1 win. He will be trying to keep the Cubs from being swept. The Phils will be going for their eleventh win in a row, and their eighth straight win at home, while trying to once again add to their lead in the NL East.
