Pitching let the offense down, as the Phils start the 2013 season off with a lost as they lose to the Braves, 7-5.

Philadelphia_PhilliesThe Phils’ offense is let down by the pitching as they lose their opening day game with their NL East rival, the Braves, 7-5.

The Braves took the lead in the bottom of the first as, with one man on, and with two men out, Freddie Freeman hits a two-run bomb to right field, his first home run of the season, knocking in Jason Heyward, who had earlier walked, giving the Braves a 2-0 lead. The Braves added to their lead in the second as Dan Uggla started off the bottom of the second with a solo home run, his first home run of the season, giving the Braves a 3-0 lead. The Braves then made it a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Freeman hits an RBI single, scoring Andrleton Simmons, who had started the inning off with a double, then stopped at third base on Justin Upton’s fly out to right. The Phils then got on the board in the top of the fourth as Chase Utley started the inning off with a solo shot to straight center field, his first home run of the season, and the 200th home run of his career, cutting the Braves’ lead to 4-1. The Phils would make it a 4-3 Braves’ lead in the top of the fifth as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Cole Hamels, a walk by Ben Revere, moving Hamels up to second base, and a single by Jimmy Rollins, sending Hamels on to third base and Revere up to second base, and with one man out, Utley hits a two-run single, knocking in Hamels and Revere, while sending Rollins on to third base, beating the throw, before moving up to second base on the throw. After Braves’ manager Freddie Gonzalez replaces starter Tim Hudson with Luis Avilan, Avilan stops the damage by first striking out Ryan Howard for the inning’s second out, and after intentionally walking Michael Young to reload the bases, gets Dom Brown to ground out softly, 4-3, for the inning’s final out. The Braves then took a 7-3 lead as pinch-hitter Reed Johnson hits into a 1-6-3 double play, wiping out Laird at second base for the inning’s first out, scoring C. Johnson, who beat Howard’s wide and late throw to the plate. The Phils got one run back in the top of the seventh as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Howard hits an RBI ground out, three-unassisted, knocking in Utley, who had just tripled, making it a 7-4 Braves’ lead. The Phils then cut the Braves’ lead down to 7-5 in the top of the eighth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Erik Kratz hits an RBI single, knocking in John Mayberry, Jr., who had earlier doubled, then moved up to third on Jordan Walden’s wild pitch. That would be the final score as Craig Kimbrel would come in and collect his first save of the season as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, getting Howard to fly out for the game’s final out.

Mark Melancon and Jeff Fulchino combine for two scoreless innings, giving up three hits (Melancon (2), Fulchino (1)) and two walks (Fulchino), while striking out one (Fulchino), between them.

The Phils had thirteen hits in the game, with Ryan Howard (Single, Double, Home Run, 4 RBIs) and Ben Francisco (2 Singles, Home Run, 1 RBI) lead the team with three hits each. Placido Polanco (Single, Double) and Jimmy Rollins (Singles) followed with two hits each. Michaels Martinez (Single, RBI), Wilson Valdez (Single) and pinch hitter Shane Victorino (Single, RBI) had the other two Phils’ hits. The offense, in the first three games, have had a total of thirty-seven hits, only eight of which were extra-base hits (6 2Bs, 2 HRs), as they scored a total of twenty-one runs, mostly through singles.

Shane Victorino, after being taken out of the game, pinch hit for Roy Oswalt in the sixth, before playing center field for the last three innings. Hopefully this will mean that things are not as bad with his legs as it sounded last night. We shall see.

The Phils (3-0, 1st) will continue their home stand with three games against the New York Mets (2-1, T-2nd), starting Tuesday night at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (0-0, 0.00), who is coming off a 12-11 2010, with a 3.06 ERA. He will be trying to give the Phils a 4-0 start. The Mets will counter with Chris Young (0-0, 0.00), who is coming off a 2-0, 0.90 ERA 2010 season with the Padres.

The Phils hang on to defeat the Astros, 7-6, as they win their final Grapefruit League game.

The Phils, after taking a big lead, hang on to defeat the Astros, 7-6, to win their last spring training game in Florida.

The Astros took a 1-0 lead in the first as, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Michael Bourn, a single by Angel Sanchez, sending Bourn up to second base, a ground out by Brett Wallace, 4-3, which sent Bourn to third base and moved Sanchez to second base, and Jason Michaels being hit by the pitch, and with one man out, Chris Johnson hits an RBI ground out, 5-3, scoring Bourn, while sending Sanchez to third and Michaels to second. The Phils would take the lead in their half of the first as, with two men on, and with two men out, Shane Victorino hits an RBI single, knocking in Luis Castillo, who had earlier walked, then moved up to second base on Raul Ibanez’s walk, before Ibanez, who had just walked, would score on right fielder Jason Bourgeois’ throwing error to third, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while Victorino would stop at third on the throwing error. The Phils then took a 3-1 lead in the third as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Ibanez hits an RBI double, knocking in Castillo, who had earlier doubled, then went to third on Jimmy Rollins’ ground out, 3-unassisted. The Phils then added to their lead in the fifth as, with two men on, and with two outs, Victorino hits an RBI single, scoring Placido Polanco, who had earlier walked, then moved up to second on Castillo’s sacrifice bunt, 5-4, giving the Phils a 4-1 lead, while sending Ibanez, who had just walked, up to second base. One batter later, the Phils made it a 7-1 lead as, with two men on, and with still two men out, Ben Francisco hits a three-run home run, his fourth home run of the spring, knocking in both Ibanez and Victorino. The Astros got a run back in the seventh as, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Bourn, a single by Sanchez, moving pinch runner Brandon Barnes up to second base, and a walk to Wallace, moving both Barnes and pinch runner Matt Downs up a base, and with one man out, Michaels hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Barnes, making it a 7-2 Phils’ lead, while Downs would move up to third. The Astros then made it a 7-3 Phils’ lead as, with runners on the corners, and now with two men out, Downs scored on a Wilson Valdez throwing error of a Johnson grounder, while Oswaldo Navarro, who was pinch running for Wallace, would move up to second base, as Johnson was safe at first. The Astros then made it a 7-4 Phils’ lead in the top of the ninth as, with a runner on second, and with nobody out, Navarro hits an RBI single, scoring Downs, who had earlier doubled. One batter later, with still nobody out, J.B. Shuck hits a two-run home run, his second home run of the spring, scoring Navarro. That would end up as the final score as Ebelin Lugo would buckle down and strike out three of the last four Astros batters.

Nate Bump (1-0, 1.80) got the win as he pitched five strong innings, giving up a run on eight hits and a walk, while striking out a batter. Danys Baez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk, as he struck out a batter.  Jose Contreras pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only man he would face. Derrick Loop pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs, only one of which was earned, on a hit and two walks. Michael Cisco pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while he struck out a batter. Ebelin Lugo pitched an inning, giving up three runs on three hits, while striking out the side. Bud Norris (1-3, 7.71) took the lost as he pitched five innings, giving up seven run, six of which were earned, on six hits and four walks, while he struck out two. Aneury Rodriguez, Enerio Del Rosario and Fernando Abad combined for three scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Abad), while striking out three (Rodriguez (2), Del Rosario (1)) between them.

The Phils had only seven hits in the game, with Shane Victorino leading the team with two hits, both singles, knocking in two runs as he raised his spring batting average to .323. Luis Castillo (Double), Raul Ibanez (Double, RBI), Rich Thompson (Single), Ben Francisco (Home Run, 3 RBIs) and Carlos Ruiz (Single), had the other five Phils’ hits. The seventh Phils’ run came in on an Astros’ error.

The Phils’ Grapefruit League record is now 20-13, as they head back to Philadelphia for two spring training games at Citizens Bank Park.

The bats are cold again as the Phils drop the series to the Astros as they lose, 3-2.

The Phils’ offense has once again gone cold as they waste another good performance by one of their starters as they lose to the Astros, 3-2.

The Astros took the lead in the fourth as, with two men out, Hunter Pence hits a solo home run, his twentieth home run of the year, giving the Astros a 1-0 lead. The Phils tied it up at one-all in the fifth as Jayson Werth hits a lead-off home run, his seventeenth home run of the season. The Astros retook the lead in the sixth as, with one man out, Michael Bourn hits a solo home run, making it a 2-1 Astros’ lead. The Phils retied it in their half of the sixth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI double, scoring Roy Halladay, who had earlier singled, and then went to second on Shane Victorino’s single, while sending Shane Victorino, who had earlier singled, on to third base. The Astros retook the lead again in the seventh as, with one man on and with two men out, Humberto Quintero hits an RBI single, knocking in Chris Johnson, who had earlier doubled, giving the Astros a 3-2 lead. The Phils tried to retied the game in their half of the seventh as they had runners on the corners, with Ben Francisco at third, after being safe on first on a 5-4 force out, as Mike Sweeney, who had earlier singled, was thrown out at second base, and going to third on Carlos Ruiz’s single, and with Ruiz on first, via a single, and with two men out, as Jimmy Rollins was batting, Quintero threw out Francisco with a quick snap throw to third, as Francisco lost sight of the bag. That would be the last real threat by the Phils as Brandon Lyon records his eighth save of the season in the ninth by striking out the side.

Roy Halladay took the lost as he pitches seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out three. His record is now 16-9 with a 2.22 ERA. Jose Contreras and Chad Durbin pitches two 1-2-3 innings, striking out two batters (one each). J.A. Happ gets the win as he pitches six and one-third innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out four. His record is now 4-2 with a 3.45 ERA. Wilton Lopez pitched to one batter, giving up a hit. Tim Byrdak collects his eighth hold of the year as he pitches a third of an inning. Mark Melancon records his second hold of the year as he also pitches a third of an inning. Brandon Lyon records his eighth save of the year with two scoreless innings, giving up a hit, while striking out three.

The Phils had only seven hits in the game, singles by Shane Victorino, Mike Sweeney, Carlos Ruiz, Roy Halladay and pinch hitter Ryan Howard, an RBI double by Placido Polanco and a solo home run by Jayson Werth. The offense is once again having a hard time scoring runs.

The Phils (70-56, 2nd East) are concluding their series with the Astros (57-69, 4th Central) with an afternoon game, already in progress, with the Phils trailing.

Phils lose in extra-innings, 4-2.

The Phils lose their second straight game to the Astros, this time in extra-innings, 4-2, as another strong effort by Cole Hamels is wasted.

The Astros took the lead in the fourth as, with one man on and with one man out, Carlos Lee hits a two-run home run, knocking in Hunter Pence, who had earlier singled, giving the Astros a 2-0 lead. The Phils would cut the lead down to 2-1 in the sixth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI double, knocking in Jayson Werth, who had earlier singled, as he scored the first run in four starts that the Phils had scored while Hamels was on the mound. In the ninth, the Phils tied it up at two-all as, with two men out, Jimmy Rollins hit a solo home run, his sixth home run of the season, sending the game into extra innings. The game would go on, with neither team being able to do anything, before the top of the sixteenth, when, with the bases loaded, thanks to a high chop single over the head of David Herndon by Pence, Brett Wallace being hit by the pitch, moving Pence to second base, a wild pitch by Herndon, sending Pence and Wallace to third and second respectively, and an intentional walk to Jason Michaels, and with one man out, Chris Johnson hits a grounder that is stopped by Placido Polanco, who, after a slight bobble, throws to second, with Michaels thus being able to beat the throw to Rollins, who then tried to throw out Johnson at first, who beat the throw, leaving the bases loaded as Pence crosses the plate to give the Astros a 3-2 lead, while Wallace reached third, as Johnson is credited with an RBI infield single. The Astros then made it 4-2 as the next batter, Tommy Manzella hits a grounder to short, which leads to a 6-4 force out, wiping out Johnson at second for the inning’s second out, before Manzella reaches first safely as Ibanez, who had taken over first base for the earlier ejected Ryan Howard, closed his glove too soon, thus being unable to catch the ball, allowing Wallace to score, while Michaels would reach third on the play. That would end up being the final score as, in the bottom of the sixteenth, with two men on base, Polanco on second with a walk, and Chase Utley on first with an intentional walk, and with two men out, Roy Oswalt, who was also in the game because of Howard’s earlier ejection, grounded out to third, 5-3, for the final out.

Cole Hamels got a no-decision as he pitches seven strong innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk, striking out eight. J.C. Romero, Chad Durbin, Brad Lidge, Jose Contreras, Ryan Madson and Danys Baez combine for six scoreless innings, giving up just five hits (Romero (1), Contreras (2), Madson (2)) and a walk (Durbin), while striking out five (Romero (1), Lidge (2), Madson (1), Baez (1)). David Herndon took the lost, as he pitched three innings, giving up two runs on three hits, two walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch, while striking out two. His record is now 1-3 with a 4.57 ERA. Bud Norris also receives a no-decision as he pitches six innings, giving up a run on five hits and three walks, while striking out four. Tim Byrdak collects his seventh hold of the season as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up two walks. Gustavo Chacin collects his third hold as he pitches two-thirds of an inning, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Wilton Lopez records his second blown save of the year as he gives up a run on one hit. Fernando Abad and Mark Melancon combine for five scoreless innings, giving up three hits (Abad (1), Melancon (2)) and two walks (Melancon) between them, while striking out six (three batters each). Jeff Fulchino gets the win as he pitches two shut out innings, giving up just three walks, while striking out two. His record is now 1-0 with a 6.18 ERA.

The Phils had ten hits in the game, with Placido Polanco, Chase Utley, Jayson Werth and Raul Ibanez each leading the team with two hits apiece, with Polano, Utley and Werth’s hits all being singles, while Ibanez’s hits were a single and a double, knocking in a run. Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino had the other two Phils’ hits, with Rollins’ hit being a solo home run, and with Victorino’s hit being a single. The Phils seems to be having their offensive troubles again.

The Phils (70-55, 2nd East) continue their series with the Astros (56-69, 4th Central) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phils will send to the mound their ace Roy Halladay (16-8, 2.16), who is coming off a win against the Nationals on August 20, as he went seven innings, giving up eight hits and three walks, while striking out five, in the Phils’ 1-0 win. In his last three starts his record is 3-0, where he had pitched twenty-two innings, giving up five runs on twenty-one hits and four walks, while striking out twenty-two. He will be trying for his seventh straight win, while seeing if he can add to his sixteen innings scoreless streak. The Astros will counter with ex-Phil J.A. Happ (3-2, 3.54), who is coming off a lost to the Marlins on August 20, where he went six innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out six, in the Astros’ 9-0 lost. In his last three starts, his record is 1-1 with a no-decision, as he had pitched eighteen and a third innings, giving up six runs on ten hits and ten walks, while striking out seventeen. He will be trying to defeat his old ballclub. The Phils will see if they can do better against Happ than they did against Brett Myers on Monday.

Roy Halladay pitches his 50th career complete game as he wins his 150th victory as the Phils sweep the Astros, 2-1.

Roy Halladay, as he pitches his 50th complete game, wins his 150th career game as he outduels the Astros’ Ray Oswalt, as the Phils defeat the Astros’ 2-1. The Phils, now 5-1, are off to their best start since 1993, when they started that pennant season with an 8-1 start.

The Phils took a quick 1-0 lead in the first as, on the second pitch of the game, Jimmy Rollins hits a solo home run, his first home run of the season. The Phils would make it 2-0 in the second as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Carlos Ruiz hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, knocking in Raul Ibanez, who had earlier doubled and had gone to third on Shane Victorino’s single, while Victorino, who had earlier singled, moved up to second base. The game then became a pitchers’ duel between the Phils’ Roy Halladay and the Astros’ Roy Oswalt, with Oswalt giving up no more runs before leaving the game in the sixth, having given up two runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out eight Phils, while Halladay, through five, gave up only three hits while striking out five Astros. The Astros then threathen in the sixth as they loaded up the bases on singles to pinch hitter Chris Johnson and Michael Bourn, with Johnson moving up to second base, and an error to third base by Halladay on a bunt attempt by Jeff Keppinger, allowing Johnson to reach third, while Bourn moved up to second on the throw to third, with nobody out. But the next batter, Cory Sullivan then hits into a 6-3 double play, forcing out Keppinger at second base, while Johnson scored, making it a 2-1 Phils’ lead, while Bourn moved up to third, where he would stay as the next batter, Carlos Lee, pops up to Rollins for the final out of the inning. The Astros then threathen again in the seventh, as they put runners on second and third, with one man out, via singles to Geoff Blum and Pedro Feliz, with Blum moving up to second base on Feliz’s hit, and then with both man moving up a base on Kazuo Matsui’s sacrifice bunt, 2-4, for the inning’s first out. But Halladay then turned the Astros back by getting J.R. Towles to bounce back to the pitcher, 1-3, for the inning’s second out, and then striking out pinch hitter Jason Michaels, swinging. That would be the last threat as Halladay gets Feliz to end the game in the bottom of the ninth with a pop up to Chase Utley for the final out.

Roy Halladay picks up the win as he pitches a complete game, giving up an unearned run on seven hits, as he strikes out eight. His record is now 2-0 with a reduced ERA of 0.56. Roy Oswalt took the lost as he pitches six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks, while he strikes out eight. His record is now 0-2 with an ERA of 3.75. Jeff Fulchino, Tim Byrdak and Brandon Lyon combine for three shut out innings, giving up only one hit (Fulchino), while striking out two Phils (Fulchino and Byrdak, one each).

The Phils’ offense had only six hits in the game, with Jimmy Rollins leading the team with two hits, a solo home run and a single, knocking in a run. Chase Utley, Raul Ibanez, Shane Victorino and Roy Halladay had the other foru Phils’ hits, with Utley and Ibanez’s hits being doubles. Carlos Ruiz knocked in the other Phils’ run with an RBI ground out.

The Phils (5-1, 1st East) start a six games home stand with a three games series against the Nationals (3-3, 4th East). The first game of the three-games set, being played at Citizens Bank Park, is already in progress. The Phils send to the mound Cole Hamels (1-0, 3.60), who is coming off a win against these same Nats on April 7, as he pitched five innings, giving up three runs, only two of which were earned, on five hits and two walks, while striking out five, in the Phils’ 8-4 win. He hopes to improve on that outing, giving the Phils a chance to win their home opener. He will be opposed by Jason Marquis (0-1, 13.50), who is coming off a lost to the Phils, also on April 7, as he lasted only four innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and three walks, while striking out only two, in the Nats’ 8-4 lost. He hopes to do better against this same Phils squad. The Phils plan to win their home opener, and to increase their winning streak to four games.
