The Phils took the lead in the bottom of the third as, with two men on, and with two men out, Marlon Byrd hits an RBI double, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier walked, then moved up to second base on Ryan Howard’s walk, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Howard, who had just walked, up to second base. The Mariners would get on the board in the top of the eighth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Dustin Ackley hits an RBI double, knocking in Chris Taylor, who had started the inning off being hit by a pitch, then stopped at second base on pinch-hitter Endy Chavez’s single, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead, while sending Chavez, who had earlier singled, up to third base. That would end up being the final score as Jonathan Papelbon collected his twenty-ninth save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth, getting Brad Miller to pop out to the third baseman for the game’s final out.

Jerome Williams, whom the Phils have recently picked up off the waiver wire, (3-5, 5.91), got the win as he pitched seven, plus one batter, strong innings, giving up just a run on three hits, three walks and a hit batter, while striking out four.
