The Phils score enough runs in support of a good performance by Cole Hamels as they defeat the Padres, 3-2.

The Phils’ offense knocked in enough runs to support a good start by Cole Hamels as they go on to defeat the Padres, 3-2.

The Phils took the lead in the first as Jimmy Rollins hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the year, and the 38th lead-off home run of his career, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the second as, with a man on second, and with two men out, Brian Schneider hits an RBI single, knocking in Ty Wigginton, who had reached first base on third baseman James Darnell’s throwing error, before stopping at second base as the ball went into the camera well, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Padres got a run back in the third as, with two men on, and with one man out, Jesus Guzman hits an RBI ground out, 5-3, scoring Chris Denorfia, who had earlier doubled, then stole third base as part of a double steal, making it a 2-1 Phils’ lead, while sending to third Yonder Alonso, who had earlier walked, then stole second base at the tail end of the double steal. The Phils added to their lead in the fifth as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Juan Pierre hits an RBI double, scoring Schneider, who had earlier doubled, then moved up to third on Cole Hamels’ sacrifice bunt, 1-3, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. The Padres cut the Phils’ lead down to 3-2 in the eighth as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Nick Hundley hits an RBI ground out, 6-3 scoring Guzman, who had earlier doubled, then stole third base. That would be the final score as Jonathan Papelbon recorded his tenth save of the season by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth, getting Cameron Maybin to fly out to right for the game’s final out.

Cole Hamels (5-1, 2.28) got the win as he pitched seven strong innings, giving up just a run on five scattered hits and three walks, while striking out five. Jose Contreras received his third hold of the year as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on a hit, as he struck out a batter. Antonio Bastardo recorded his sixth hold of the season as he pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only batter that he would face. Jonathan Papelbon received his tenth save of the season as he threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two. Jeff Suppen (2-1, 1.69) took the lost as he went six innings, giving up three runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits and two walks, as he struck out a batter. The Phils had eight hits in the ballgame, with Juan Pierre (Single, Double, RBI) and Brian Schneider (Single, Double, RBI) both leading the club with two hits each. Jimmy Rollins (Home Run, RBI), Shane Victorino (Single), Ty Wigginton (Single) and pinch hitter Carlos Ruiz (Single), had the other four Phils’ hits. The Phils also had three walks, and one stolen base (Victorino (11)).

The Phils (16-19, 5th East) will conclude their eight-game home stand with a two-game series against the Astros (15-19, T-4 Central), starting tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils’ starter will be Joe Blanton (3-3, 3.24), who is coming off a no-decision against the Mets on May 8, where he threw six and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out seven, in the Phils’ 7-4 lost. He will be going for his fourth win of the season. The Astros will counter with Lucas Harrell (2-2, 4.58), who is coming off a no-decision of his own against the Marlins on May 9, as he threw five and one-third innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out four, in the Astros’ 5-3 lost. He’ll be trying for his third win. The Phils will be going for their second straight win while hoping that the bullpen have finally become stabilized.

The Phils react to the criticism from both their manager and general manager, and changes in their roster, by defeating the lowly Padres, 7-3.

After being blasted by both Charlie Manuel and Ruben Amaro, Jr. and changes in the roster, the Phils react by going out and beating the last place Padres, 7-3.

The Phils took the lead in the second as, with one man on, and with two men out, the presently hot John Mayberry, Jr. hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the year, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier singled, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Padres cut down the Phils’ lead to 2-1 in the fourth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Yonder Alonso hits an RBI single, knocking in Will Venable, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Chase Headley’s walk, while sending Headley, who had just walked, up to second base. The Padres then tied the game up at two-all as Jesus Guzman hits an RBI single, scoring  Headley, while sending Alonso up to second base. The Phils retook the lead in their half of the fourth as, with a man on first, and with nobody out, a still hot Ruiz hits a two-run home run of his own, his sixth home run of the season, knocking in Ty Wigginton, who had started the inning off with a walk, giving the Phils a 4-2 lead. The Padres would get a run back in the sixth as, with one man out, Alonso hits a solo home run, his first home run of the season, making it a 4-3 Phils’ lead. The Phils would get the run back in their half of the sixth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Freddy Galvis hits an RBI double, knocking in Mayberry, who had earlier reached first base on a 5-4 force out, wiping out at second base Ruiz, who had begun the inning off with a walk, giving the Phils a 5-3 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the seventh as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Ruiz hits an RBI single, knocking in Hunter Pence, who had earlier walked, then went all the way to third on Miles Mikolas’ wild pitch, as he walked Wigginton, giving the Phils a 6-3 lead, while sending Wigginton, who had walked for the second time in the ballgame, up to second base. The Phils then made it a 7-3 lead as Mayberry hits an RBI single, scoring Wigginton, before Ruiz, who was trying to move on to third base, is thrown out, 7-5-4, for the inning’s third out. That would end up being the final score as Chad Qualls threw a scoreless ninth, getting Orlando Hudson to end the game with a fly out to center for the final out.

Vance Worley (3-2, 3.07) got the win as he threw six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks, while he struck out nine. Antonio Bastardo collected his fifth hold of the season as he threw two scoreless innings, giving up a walk, while striking out three. Jimmy Rollins (Single), Shane Victorino (Single) and Freddy Galvis (Double, RBI) had the other three hits. The Phils also had four walks in the game, as they try to react positively to the chewing out given them by both Charlie Manuel and Ruben Amaro, Jr.

The Phils (15-18, 5th East) continue their weekend series with the Padres (11-22, 5th West) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will begin at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound their ace Roy Halladay (3-2, 3.28) who is coming off a no-decision against the Mets on May 7, as he threw seven strong innings, giving up just two runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out seven, in the Phils’ 5-2 lost. He will be trying, for the fourth time this season, to get his fourth win of the year, while trying to give the Phils a two-game winning streak, after getting swept by the Mets. The Padres will counter with Edinson Volquez (1-2, 2.98), who is coming off a win against the Rockies on May 7, as he went five and one-third innings, giving up two runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out five, in the Padres’ 3-2 win. He will be trying to help the Padres tie up the series at a game apiece. The Phils will be out to build on last night’s win.

An anemic offense, an imploding bullpen and now defensive mishaps do in the Phils as they lose to the Mets, 7-4.

An offense that seems to be mainly in neutral, a bullpen that is leaking losses and now a defense that is making mistakes, help the Phils lose their second straight series, as they lose to the Mets, 7-4.

The Phils jumped off to a quick 2-0 lead as, with one man on, and with two men out, Hunter Pence hits a two-run home run, his seventh home run of the season, knocking in Juan Pierre, who had earlier singled. The Phils added to their lead in the second as, with a runner on third, and with nobody out, Pete Orr hits an RBI single, scoring John Mayberry, Jr., who had reached first base on shortstop Jordany Valdespin’s throwing error, before stopping at second base on the error, then moving to third base on pitcher Miguel Batista’s throwing error on his pickoff attempt, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 4-0 lead as, with two men on, and with two men out, Shane Victorino hits an RBI double, scoring Orr, who had stolen second base, while sending Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier walked, on to third base. The Mets got a run back in the fourth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Daniel Murphy hits an RBI single, knocking in Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who had started the inning off with a double, then moved up to third base on David Wright’s fly out to right, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead, while sending Lucas Duda, who had just walked, up to second base. The Mets cut the Phils’ lead down to 4-2 in the seventh as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Nieuwenhuis hits an RBI single, knocking in Valdespin, who had started the inning off with a walk, then went to third base on Andres Torres’ single, while sending Torres, who had just singled, up to second base. The Mets then made it a 4-3 Phils’ lead as Wright hits an RBI single to right, scoring Torres, while sending Nieuwenhuis to third on the late throw to the plate, before the Mets would tied it up a four-all as the Phils blew an attempt to end the inning as Carlos Ruiz tried to cut down Wright as he tried to move up to second base on the throw, as he threw the ball to Orr, but the rundown that followed, involving Orr and Rollins, is messed up by Orr worrying a bit too much about Nieuwenhuis at third, before Orr, as he tried to pick off Nieuwenhuis, committed a throwing error as the ball gets past third baseman Placido Polanco into the left field foul area, allowing Nieuwenhuis to score the tying run, and for Wright to reach third base on the error. The Mets then took a 5-4 lead as Duda hits an RBI single, scoring Wright. The Mets added to their lead in the ninth as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Nieuwenhuis hits a sacrifice fly, scoring pinch hitter Mike Baxter, who had earlier walked, then moved up to third on Torres’ single, giving the Mets a 6-4 lead, while sending Torres up to second base. The Mets then made it a 7-4 lead two batters later as Duda hits an RBI single, knocking in Torres. That would be the final score as Jon Rauch recorded his first save of the year as he pitched a scoreless ninth, getting Pence to end the ballgame by grounding out, 5-3, for the final out.

Joe Blanton received a no-decision as he threw six and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out seven. Chad Qualls committed his third blown save attempt of the season, before taking the lost (1-1, 3.48), as he faced only one batter, giving up an unearned run on a hit. Antonio Bastardo pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a hit. Jose Contreras pitched two-thirds of an inning, getting out both men that he would face. Michael Schwimer pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on a hit and a walk, as he struck out a batter. Joe Savery pitched a third of an inning, giving up a hit. Miguel Batista also received a no-decision as he pitched five and one-third innings, giving up four runs, only two of which were earned, on eight hits and two walks, while striking out a batter. Manny Acosta (1-2, 8.59) got the win as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, getting out both men that he would face, as he struck out a batter. Ramon Ramirez received his first hold of the season as he threw one and two-thirds scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk, while striking out two. The Phils had ten hits in the game, with Juan Pierre (Singles), John Mayberry, Jr. (Singles) and Pete Orr (Single, Double, RBI) all leading the team with two hits apiece. Shane Victorino (Double, RBI), Hunter Pence (Home Run, 2 RBIs), Placido Polanco (Single) and Carlos Ruiz (Double), had the other four Phils’ hits, as the offense was once more (this is starting to sound like a BROKEN RECORD) unable to get the big hit that would’ve help put the game away before the Mets’ four-run rally in the seventh. The Phils also had three walks and two stolen bases (Pierre (5), Orr (1)) in the ballgame.

The Phils (14-17, 5th) will conclude their series with the Mets (17-13, 3rd) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park, and will begin at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Cliff Lee ( 0-1, 1.96), who is coming back from an injury in early April. In his last start, a no-decision against the Giants on April 18, he went ten scoreless innings, giving up seven scattered hits, as he struck out eight, in the Phils’ 1-0 extra-innings lost. He will be trying to stop the Phils’ present losing streak, while trying to capture his first victory of the season. The Mets will counter with Dillon Gee (2-2, 4.50), who is coming off a no-decision against the D-backs on May 4, as he went six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out six, in the Mets’ 5-4 lost. He will be trying to lead the Mets to a series sweep. The Phils will be out to keep from being swept, as they try to get out of their present rut.

The Phils blow another lead, before losing in the ninth, as they are downed by the Mets, 5-2.

The Phils watch yet another lead slip away before losing it in the ninth on a three-run home run by a rookie, as they dropped the series’ opener to the Mets, 5-2.

The Phils took a quick lead in the first as, with a man on third, and with nobody out, John Mayberry, Jr. hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had started the game off for the Phils with a double, then went to third on center fielder Andres Torres’ fielding error, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils added to their lead in the second as, with a man on first, and with nobody out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI double, scoring Carlos Ruiz, who had started the inning off with a walk, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Mets would tie the game up at two-all in the sixth as, with two men on, and with two men out, David Wright hits a two-run double, knocking in Torres, who had earlier walked, then stopped at second base on Kirk Nieuwenhuis’ single, and Nieuwenhuis, who had just singled. The Mets then took the lead in the ninth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Jordany Valdespin hits a three-home run, his first career home run, as well as his first career hit, knocking in Ike Davis, who had earlier walked, then stopped at third on Mike Nickeas’ double, and Nickeas, who had just doubled, giving the Mets a 5-2 lead. That would end up being the final score as Frank Francisco recorded his eighth save of the year as he threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth, getting Shane Victorino to ground out, 4-3, for the game’s final out.

Roy Halladay received a no-decision as he threw seven strong innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out seven. John Mayberry, Jr. (Single, RBI), Ty Wigginton (Single), Carlos Ruiz (Single) and Placido Polanco (Double, RBI) had the other four Phils’ hits, as the offense is once again unable to capitalize when given the chance to regain the lead late in the game. The Phils also had five walks, showing a bit more patient at the plate.

The Phils will be sending to the mound Joe Blanton (3-3, 2.83), who is coming off a complete-game, shutout win against the Braves on May 3, as he gave up only three hits, while striking out six, in the Phils’ 4-0 win. He will be trying to help the Phils tie up the series at a win apiece. The Mets will counter with Miguel Batista (0-1, 6.92), who is coming off a relief appearance against the Astros on May 1, as he threw two and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on three hits and four walks, while he struck out a batter, in the Mets’ 6-3 lost. He will be trying to pitch the Mets to a series win. The Phils will be out to even up the series.

The Phils leave Washington with a win as Cole Hamels threw eight strong innings, as the Phils defeat the Nats, 9-3.

The Phils escape the Nation’s capital with a victory behind the strong pitching of Cole Hamels as they defeat the Nats, 9-3.

The Nats took the lead in the first as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, with Chad Tracy at the plate, Bryce Harper, who had earlier been hit by a pitch, and then went to third on a single to left by Jayson Werth, would steal home plate, his first stolen base of both the season and his career, as Phils’ starter Cole Hamels was trying to keep Werth close to first, giving the Nats a 1-0 lead. The Phils took the lead in the fourth as, with a runner on first, and with nobody out, Hunter Pence hits a two-run home run, his fifth home run of the season, knocking in Shane Victorino, who had lead the inning off with a walk, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead. The Nats would get one of the runs back in their half of the ninth as, with two men on, and with two men out, pinch hitter Roger Bernadina hits an RBI double, scoring Rick Ankiel, who had earlier hit into a force out, 3-6, wiping out at second base Danny Espinosa, who had earlier walked, for the inning’s second out, then stopped at second base on Wilson Ramos’ single, making it a 9-2 Phils’ lead, while sending Ramos, who had just singled, on to third base. The Nats then made it a 9-3 Phils’ lead as Ian Desmond hits an RBI single, scoring Ramos, while sending Bernadina all the way to third. After Desmond moved up to second base on defensive indifference, Brian Sanches finally ended the ballgame by getting Steve Lombardozzi to pop out to the second baseman for the final out.

The Phils will send to the mound their ace Roy Halladay (3-2, 3.40), who is coming off an awful start against the Braves on May 2, as he pitched five and one-thirds innings, giving up eight runs on twelve hits, as he struck out five, in the Phils’ 15-13 extra-innings lost. He will be trying to come back from that bad start as he continues to look for his fourth win of the season. The Mets will counter with Jon Niese (2-1, 4.08), who is coming off a lost to the Astros on May 1, as he threw just three innings, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks, while he struck out a batter, in the Mets’ 6-3 lost. He will be trying to recover from that lost. The Phils will be trying to bounce back from their losing series in Washington.

The Phils will conclude their four-game set with the Cubs with a night game.

The Phils (10-12, 4th East) will conclude their four-game series with the Cubs (8-14, 6th Central), as they try to recover from being owned by Cubs’ starter Matt Garza (2-1, 2.67) yesterday for seven innings, being able to get only one hit and a walk  against him in the ballgame, while the Cubs would be able to score single runs in the second, third and fourth innings off of Phils’ starter Kyle Kendrick (0-2, 6.59), who had a much better outing then he did April 23, against the D-backs, before getting two runs off of reliever David Herndon in the eighth. The Phils would finally get a run in the ninth off of a hit and three walks given up by Cubs’ reliever Carlos Marmol, before he would finally put out the fire. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and is to start at 7:05 pm EDT.

The Phils will send to the mound Vance Worley (2-1, 2.16), who is coming off a victory over the D-backs on April 24, as he went six strong innings, giving up only a run on five hits and a walk, while striking out six, in the Phils’ 8-5 win. Against the Cubs, Worley has a career record of 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA, while he had struck out seven Cubs. He will be trying to lead the Phils to a series split with the Cubs. The Cubs will counter with Chris Volstad (0-3, 6.14), who is coming off a lost against the Cardinals on April 25, where he went six innings, giving up four runs on six hits, while striking out just two, in the Cubs’ 5-1 lost. Against the Phils, he has a record of 2-5 with a 5.88 ERA, while he had struck out 45 Phils. He will be trying to get his first win for 2012, while hoping that the Phils’ offense won’t use him as a punching bag. The Phils will be trying to end the month of April, their first losing April since 2007, on a winning note, before going onto the road to meet the Braves and the Nats.

The Phils get one-hit by Matt Garza before losing to the Cubs, 5-1.

The Phils waste an improved performance by Kyle Kendrick as they get one-hit through seven innings by Matt Garza, before losing the game to the Cubs, 5-1.

The Cubs increased their lead in the third as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Starlin Castro hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Tony Campana, who had earlier singled, went to second base on Laynce Nix’s missed catch error on Kyle Kenrdick’s pickoff attempt, then went to third on Darwin Barney’s ground out, 4-3, giving the Cubs a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, after Castro is caught trying to steal second base, 2-6, the Cubs make it a 5-0 as, with a man on second, and with two men out, Baker hits an RBI single, scoring LaHair, who had earlier doubled, his second double of the ballgame. The Phils would finally get on the scoreboard in the ninth as, with the bases loaded, via a walk by pinch hitter Pete Orr, a walk by Jimmy Rollins, moving Orr up to second base, and an infield single by Hunter Pence, moving up both runners, and with two men out, Ty Wigginton forced in a run with an RBI walk, scoring Orr, making it a 5-1  Cubs’ lead, while sending Rollins on to third base and moving Pence up to second base, leaving the bases loaded. They also had four walks, with three of them coming in the ninth, helping to bring home their only run of the game, as the offense was unable to get anything going.

The Phils tied up their four-game series last night as they defeated the Cubs, 5-2, thanks mainly to a four-run fourth inning, as the offense scored twice on two bases loaded situations, with a two-run single by Carlos Ruiz and a two-run double by Jimmy Rollins, as they were able to get to Randy Wells the second time that they faced him in the game, as they finally showed some patience at the plate, as they took three walks in the inning. A solo home run was later added by Ruiz in the sixth. The five runs would be enough for starter Joe Blanton, who, despite giving up a first inning run, would keep the Cubs under control, striking out eight batters, as well as getting a lot of ground ball outs, as he kept the ball down against the Cubs’ batters. Chad Qualls came in to relieve Blanton in the eighth when he ran into a runners on the corners, one out, situation, who got out of it, although giving up a run as a potential doubleplay ball is ruined as it bounced off of the mound, instead becoming a force out. Jonathan Papelbon then came in to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth, collecting his seventh save of the year in seven attempts.

The Phils will today send to the mound Kyle Kendrick (0-1, 9.39), who is coming off a very awful start against the D-backs on April 23, as he went only three innings plus, as he gave up seven runs on eleven hits and a walk, while he struck out only one batter, in the Phils’ 9-5 lost. In facing the Cubs, he has a record of 0-0 with a 0-0 ERA, as he struck out two Cubbies. He will be out to recover from his bad first start, while trying to give the Phils the win. The Cubs will counter with Matt Garza (1-1, 3.38), who is coming off a no-decision against the Cardinals on April 23, as he threw seven strong innings, giving up just two runs on four hits and three walks, as he struck out five, in the Cubs’ 3-2 walk-off win. Career-wise, he has a 1-1 record against the Phils, with a 1.29 ERA, as he struck out sixteen Phils. He will be out to win his second start of the season. The Phils, as they hear the wonderful news that Ryan Howard will be headed back to Florida to start working out so that he can rejoin the main club, will be out to tie up their reason season record, while hoping to stay within striking distance of both the Nationals and the Braves.

A four-run outburst in the fourth inning gives support to a good start by Joe Blanton leading to a Phils victory over the Cubs, 5-2.

The Phils’ offense’s fourth inning outburst supports a good pitching performance by Joe Blanton which leads to the Phils defeat of the Cubs, 5-2.

The Cubs took the lead in the first as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Bryan LaHair hits an RBI double, knocking in Starlin Castro, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead. The Phils took the lead in the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via a double by Hunter Pence, a Jim Thome walk, then a force out by Shane Victorino, 4-6, as Thome is wiped out at second base for the inning’s first out, while Pence would move up to third, then Victorino would steal second base, and a Laynce Nix walk, and with one man out, Carlos Ruiz hits a two-run single, knocking in Pence and Victorino, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while sending Nix up to second base. The Phils three batters later took a 4-1 lead as they reloaded the bases via a walk to Joe Blanton, moving up both runners, and now with two men out, Jimmy Rollins hits a two-run double, knocking in Nix and Ruiz, while sending Blanton on to third base. The Phils then took a 5-1 lead in the sixth as Ruiz hits a lead-off home run, his third home run of the year. The Cubs got a run back in the eighth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Castro hits an RBI forced out, 4-6, knocking in pinch hitter Tony Campana, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Blanton’s wild pitch, before stopping at third base on Darwin Barney’s single, as Barney, who had just singled, is wiped out at second base for the inning’s second out. That would end up being the final score as Jonathan Papelbon recorded his seventh save of the season as he threw a 1-2-3 inning, with Reed Johnson ending the game by trying to bunt himself on base which instead became a 1-3 out.

He will be out to recover from that fiasco. The Cubs will counter with Matt Garza (1-1, 3.38), who is coming off a no-decision against the Cardinals on April 23, as he went seven innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks, as he struck out five, in the Cubs’ 3-2 walk-off win.
