The Phils have cut nine players at camp.
Before the start of this afternoon’s game with the Twins, the Phils cut nine players off of their spring training roster. The nine were all sent to the Phils’ minor league camp.
The nine who were cut were right handed pitchers Dave Bush, Austin Hyatt and B.J. Rosenberg and left hander Pat Misch, all of whom are to be reassigned, while infielders Harold Garcia and Ceasar Hernandez, outfielder Tyson Gillies, catcher Sabastian Valle and right hander J.C. Ramirez have all been optioned. Garcia had also been reassigned from the Phils’ 40-man roster, which leaves the team with 38 men now on the roster.

In spite of a late ninth inning rally, the Phils lost their grapefruit league opener to the Yankees, 8-5.

The Yankees then took a 6-2 lead as Gardner hits a two-run home run to left, his first home run of the spring, knocking in Wise. The Bronx Bombers then took an 8-2 lead in the top of the ninth as, with runners on the corners, thanks to a walk to Dickerson, and a single to Wise, sending Dickerson on to third, and with two men out, pinch hitter Zoilo Almonte hits a two-run pinch hit double, scoring both Dickerson and Wise. The Phils started a rally in their half of the ninth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Kevin Frandsen hits a two-run home run, his first of the spring, scoring Juan Pierre, who had earlier singled, cutting the Yanks’ lead down to 8-4. Three batters later, with a man on first, and with two men out, the Phils cut the Yanks’ lead down to 8-5 as Tyson Gillies hits an RBI double, knocking in Scott Podsednik, who had just singled. That would end up being the final score as Michael O’Connor ended the game by striking out Cesar Hernandez, swinging, for the game’s final out.
Cole Hamels received a no-decision as he pitched two innings, giving up a run on three hits, while striking out one. Dave Bush blew his first save opportunity of the spring, as he went two innings, giving up a run on a hit, as he struck out two. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Dontrelle Willis (0-1, 9.00) took the lost as he went an inning, giving up a run on two hits and a walk. Chad Qualls pitched an inning, giving up three runs on three hits, while striking out one. Michael O’Connor pitched an inning, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out one.
The Phils had eight hits in the ballgame, with Tyson Gillies leading the ballclub with two hits, a single and a double, while knocking in a run, followed by Hunter Pence (HR, 2 RBIs), Ty Wigginton (Single), Scott Podsednik (Double), Hector Luna (Single), Juan Pierre (Single) and Kevin Frandsen (HR, 2 RBI). The Phils also collected five walks in the game, as well as a stolen base (Pierre).
The Phils next spring training game will be an afternoon game tomorrow with the Yankees in Tampa Bay, Florida, starting at 1:05 pm EST.

Two home runs by the Phils supported a fine pitching performance by their ace Roy Halladay as the Phils start off interleague play with a victory over the Rangers, 3-2.
The Rangers took the lead in the first as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, the Rangers perform a double steal as Ian Kinsler strikes out for the inning’s first out, as Mitch Moreland, who had just singled, stole second base, before Elvis Andrus, who had started the game off with a single, then went to third on Moreland’s single, stole home, beating the throw, giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead. The Phils took the lead in the second as, with one man on, and with two men out, Ben Francisco hits a two-run home run, his fifth home run of the season, knocking in Raul Ibanez, who had just walked, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead. The Phils then made it a 3-1 lead in the fourth as, with two men out, Ibanez hits a solo home run, his fourth home run of the year. The Rangers cut the Phils’ lead in the eighth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Moreland hits an RBI ground out, 4-3, scoring Endy Chavez, who had earlier hit a pinch hit double, then went to third on Andrus’ ground out, 4-3, cutting the Phils’ lead to 3-2. That would end up being the final score as Ryan Madson recorded his eighth save of the season as, with one man on base, and with two men out, David Murphy was caught stealing, 2-4, by a good throw to second by Carlos Ruiz.

The Phils had only four hits last night, a single by Placido Polanco, a single by Carlos Ruiz, a two-run home run by Ben Francisco, knocking in two runs and a solo home run by Raul Ibanez. The offense continues to make a lot of bad outs, although getting two home runs to win the ballgame for the Doc.

He will be trying to even up the series. The Phils will be trying to win their first series in over a week, while also trying to give Lee his third win of the season.

In the second, the Phils took a 2-0 lead as, with one man on, and with one man out, Phils’ starter Cole Hamels help his own cause by hitting an RBI double, knocking in Paul Hoover, who had earlier doubled. The Phils will make it 3-0 in the third as, with two men on, and with two men out, Wilson Valdez hits an RBI ground-rule double, scoring Jayson Werth, who had earlier hit his own ground-rule double, while sending Raul Ibanez, who had just walked, on to third. The Brewers would get back into the game in the sixth as, with two men out, Casey McGhee hits a solo home run, his eighth home run of the season, to make it a 3-1 Phils’ lead. The next batter, Corey Hart, follows with his own solo home run, his fifth home run of the year, to cut the Phils’ lead down to 3-2. The Phils would get an insurance run in the eighth as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Chase Utley would strikeout, but the ball would get past catcher Gregg Zaun for a strikeout-wild pitch by reliever Carlos Villanueva, allowing Victorino, who had earlier walked, and had gone to third on Polanco’s single, to score, giving the Phils a 4-2 lead, while allowing Polanco, who had just singled, to move up to second base, and Utley to get to first. That would be the final score as J.C. Romero would pitch a 1-2-3 ninth, recording his first save of the season.

J.C. Romero gets his first save of the season as he pitches a 1-2-3 ninth. Dave Bush took the lost as he pitches six innings, giving up three runs on nine hits and four walks, while striking out two. His record is now 1-4 with a 4.27 ERA. Mitch Stetter pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out one. Phillies lose another series as Cole Hamels is knocked out of the box, literally.
The Phillies dropped to 6-8 on the season as they lose another game, one in which they were almost no-hit by the Brewers, while their ace was taken out of the game after being hit on the shoulder by a line-drive hit by Prince Fielder.
The game started out as a pitchers’ duel between Phillies’ ace Cole Hamels and Brewers’ starter Dave Bush for the first three innings, in which Hamels gave up only a single (Corey Hart) while striking out six of the first nine batter that he had so far faced, while Bush had allowed only one Phil batter to reach base, via a hit batsman (Jimmy Rollins). That all changed in the fourth, as, with a runner on first and one man out, Ryan Braun hits a two-run home run to left, his fourth home run of the season, and his third home run in the series, as he knocked in Hart, who had earlier singled, giving the Brewers a 2-0 lead. The next batter, Prince Fielder, then hit a first pitch line drive up the middle, which hit Hamels’ on his left shoulder, as he was finishing his delivery. The Phillies, not taking any chances with their ace, decided to take Hamels out of the game, for what was later revealed to be a bruise on his shoulder. The Phils replaced him with J.A. Happ who then ended the inning with no further damage. The Brewers then added to their lead in the fifth, as Fielder hits a two-outs, based-loaded double, scoring Bush, who had earlier singled, had moved up to second on Rickie Weeks’ single, and had gone to third on Braun’s walk, Weeks, who had singled and had moved up to second base on Braun’s walk, and Braun, who had walked, giving the Brew Crew a 5-0 lead. The Brewers then made it 6-0 in the eighth as Bill Hall hits a one-out, solo home run, his first home run of the year. As the Brewers were piling it on, Bush was no-hitting the Phils, having allowed only four more man to reach base (three walks and a hit batter), by the time Matt Stairs came up to pinch hit with one out. With the count 3-1, Stairs broke up both the no-hitter and the shut out, as he hit a pinch hit home run to right, his second home run of the year, both as a pinch hitter, making it 6-1 Milwaukee. After Shane Victorino got the Phils’ second hit, a single, Bush was taken out of the game and replaced with Mitch Stetter, who would end the inning by getting Chase Utley to ground out, 4-3. Stetter would then end the game by pitching a scoreless ninth.
Cole Hamels took the lost, in spite of pitching a good game before being taken out because of a bruised left shoulder. He pitched three and one third innings, giving up just two runs on four hits and a hit batter, while striking out six. His record is now 0-2 with a 9.69 ERA. Hamels thinks that he will be able to take his next turn in the rotation. We’ll see. J.A. Happ pitched an inning and a third in relief, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks, while he struck out three. Jack Taschner followed him, pitching two scoreless innings, giving up just a hit and a walk. Chad Durbin pitched an inning, giving up one run on on a hit, while striking out one. Brad Lidge pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up a hit, as he struck out one. Dave Bush got the win, as he gave up only one run on two hits, three walks and two hit batters, as he struck out four, in eighth and two-third innings. His record is now 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA. Mitch Stetter pitched one and one-third scoreless innings, giving up no hits.
The Phils got only two hits yesterday, Matt Stairs’ pinch hit home run and Shane Victorino’s single, as Bush no-hit them for the first seven and a third innings before Stairs finally broke it up with his home run. Before the home run, the Phils got only five men on base, via two hit batsmen (Jimmy Rollins and Victorino) and three walks (Victorino, Raul Ibanez and Chris Coste). After their eleven run explosion on Monday, the Phils have scored just two runs. This has got to stop.
The Phillies (6-8, 3rd) now go on the road to face the Florida Marlins (11-4, 1st), who are presently mired in a three games losing streak, for a three-games series at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Florida. The first game of the three-games set will be played tonight at 7:10 pm Eastern. The Phillies will send to the mound Brett Myers (1-1, 5.03), who is coming off a no-decision against the Padres on April 18, where he pitched a strong six and two-thirds innings, giving up just three runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out three, in the Phillies’ 8-5 lost. He will be shooting for his second straight win. His opponent will be Josh Johnson (2-0, 2.91), who is also coming off a no-decision, with his coming against the Nationals on April 18, as he pitched six innings, giving up six runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out six, in the Marlins’ 9-6 extra-innings win. He will be trying for his third win of the season. The Phillies hope to improve their record at the expense of the fish.
