The Phils and Reds were involved in a pitchers’ due between Phils’ starter Cliff Lee and Reds’ starter Bronson Arroyo for the first six plus innings, as Lee gives up just three hits and a walk in his first six innings, while striking out four, while Arroyo, in his first seven innings of work, would also give up just three hits, while striking out three Phils. The Reds would finally break the 0-0 tie in their half of the seventh as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Joey Votto, who had started the inning off with a single, then stopped at third base on Brandon Phillips’ double, would score on Lee’s wild pitch, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead, while it sends Philips, who had earlier doubled, up to third base. The Reds then took a 2-0 lead as, now with runners on the corners as Jay Bruce walks, and with still one man out, Todd Frazier hits a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Philips. The Phils got Lee off the hook in the top of the eighth as, with one man on, and with two-men out, pinch-hitter Chase Utley hits a two-run home run to center field, his third home run of the season, scoring Dom Brown, who had started the inning off with a single, tying the game up at two-all. The Reds would retake the lead in their half of the eighth as, with the bases loaded, via a lead-off infield single by Derrick Robinson, who then moves up to second base on Shin-Soo Choo’s sacrifice bunt, 1-3, a double by Zack Cozart, as right fielder Laynce Nix overran the ball while trying to make the catch, as Robinson stopped at third base, and an intentional walk to Votto, and with one man out, Phillips hits a two-run single, which was just able to get by second baseman Freddy Galvis, knocking in Robinson and Cozart, giving the Reds a 4-2 lead, while sending Votto up to second base. The Reds then tried to add more after Jay Bruce hits a single, reloading the bases as Votto and Philips both moved up a base, but Mike Adams buckled down as he struck out Frazier looking, for the inning’s second out, before ending the inning by getting Chris Heisey to pop out to Galvis. That would be the final score as Aroldis Chapman recorded his third save of the season by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth.
Cliff Lee received a no-decision as he threw seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits, a walk and a wild pitch, while striking out four.
