The Phils even up their spring training record as they defeat the Yanks, 10-5.
Timely hitting, and a few Yanks’ mistakes, help leads the Phils to their second straight win as they even up their spring record, as they win by the score of 10-5.
The Phils took the lead in the first as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Chase Utley reaches first base on first baseman Kyle Roller’s fielding error, allowing Jimmy Rollins, who had started the game off with a walk, then reached second base on Ben Revere’s single, to score, giving the Phils’ a 1-0 lead, while Revere, who had just singled, would move up to third base on the error. The Phils then made it a 2-0 lead as Ryan Howard hits into a 4-6-3 double play, wiping out Utley at second base, as Revere scored. The Phils increased their lead in the second as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Rollins hits a two-run double, scoring John Mayberry, Jr., who had earlier reached base on third baseman Kevin Youkilis’ fielding error, then stopped at third base on Steven Lerud’s single, and Lerud, who had just singled, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead. The Phils then added to their lead in the third as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Michael Young, and walks to Dom Brown and Darin Ruf, and with two men out, Mayberry hits a two-run single, knocking in Young and Brown, giving the Phils a 6-0 lead, while sending Ruf over to third base. After being crushed by the Blue Jays on Sunday, the Phils rolled off a two-game winning streak, defeating the Tigers, 4-3 on Monday, then defeating the Orioles, 4-1 on Tuesday, before taking Wednesday off.
In Monday’s game, the Tigers took an early lead in the first as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Don Kelly hits an RBI single, knocking in Miguel Cabrera, who had just walked, then stole second base, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Tigers then took a 3-0 lead in the third as, with one man on, and with one man out, Brennan Boesch hits a two-run home run, his third home run of the spring, knocking in Austin Jackson, who had just walked, then stole second base. The Phils then came back in the fifth as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, John Mayberry, Jr. hits an RBI single, knocking in Ty Wigginton, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Laynce Nix’s single, cutting the Tigers’ lead to 3-1, while sending Nix, who had just singled, up to second base. Two batters later, with two men on, and now with one man out, the Phils tied the game up at three-all as Freddy Glavis hits a two-run triple, scoring both Nix and Mayberry. On Monday, Chase Utley left Clearwater to meet with an unamed specialist to check out what is wrong with his knees. The Phils, as of yet, have no idea how this will effect his return to the club. The Phils have also sent five players down to their minor league camp: they’d optioned right handers Phillippe Aumont and Michael Schwimer, while reassigning left handers David Purcey and Jeremy Horst and infielder Kevin Frandsen.

The Phils broke up a 0-0 tie in the third as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI single, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier walked, then stole first second base, and then third, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Yanks tied the game up at one-all in the fifth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Jayson Nix hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Russell Martin, who had earlier walked, then stole second base, then moved up to third on Bill Hall’s fly out to center. The Yanks then took the lead in the sixth as, with nobody out, Brett Gardner hits a triple to left, before scoring on second baseman Kevin Frandsen’s throwing error when he tried to throw him out going to third, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead. The Phils have just announced that they have traded Ben Francisco to the Blue Jays for a minor league relief pitcher.
Earlier today, the Phils have traded outfielder Ben Francisco to the Toronto Blue Jays for minor league reliever Frank Gailey.
Francisco, who was part of the deal with the Indians that originally brought Cliff Lee to the Phils in late July 2009, appeared in 225 games for the Phils from 2009-2011, mainly as their fourth outfielder, although for the first couple of months of 2011 he was the team’s starting right fielder, until he was put back on the bench before the Phils eventually traded with the Astros for Hunter Pence. In those games, he batted .259, having 136 hits including 32 doubles,1 triple and 17 home runs, while knocking in 75 RBIs. He also appeared in 17 post-season games, including the 2009 World Series, where he had an overall batting average of .105, with 2 hits in 19 at-bats, which includes his dramatic three-run home run in the third game of the 2011 National League Divisional Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, which gave the Phils a temporary 2-1 series lead, before finally falling to the eventual World Series champs in five games.
Gailey, a native Philadelphian, had pitched a combine 5-6 with a 3.41 ERA in 45 appearances for Class-A Dunedin and Double-A New Hampshire in the Blue Jays’ farm system. In his minor league career, overall, Gailey is 23-15 with a 2.45 ERA in 175 appearances.

Exhibition Game: Team USA defeats the world champs, 9-6, as Kendrick gets done in by fellow teammates.
First off, I’m going to continue the quiz until tomorrow. So, if you haven’t made an attempt to answer the quiz, you still have time. The question is, which I will rephrase, is this:

Despite a late surge, the Phillies fell to Team USA this afternoon, with the final score, 9-6. Kyle Kendrick, who started the game for the Phils, recorded outs on seven of the first eight batter whom he faced before the roof fell on him. After getting out the first batter in the top of the third inning, with the Phils ahead 1-0, he would give up a single to Shane Victorino, who was playing center field for Team USA. Kendrick would then commit an error on a pickoff attempt, allowing Victorino to move to second base. Jimmy Rollins, who was starting as Team USA’s shortstop, then follows with a single, knocking in Victorino to tie the game. After a Dustin Pedroia single moves Rollins to second base, Chipper Jones would cap the inning off with a three-run home run to left, to give Team USA the lead, 4-1. Kendrick is then taken out for Antonio Bastardo, who finally ends the inning. Bastardo, in the fourth, gives up back-to-back home runs to Ryan Braun and Brian McCann, making it a 6-1 Team USA lead. He then gives up a three-run homer to Adam Dunn in the fifth, giving team USA a 9-1 lead. The rest of the pitching staff would keep Team USA quiet. Kendrick pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out one. Bastardo pitches two and one-third innings, giving up five runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two. Clay Condrey, Ryan Madson and Blaine Neal combines for four shut outs innings, giving up just two hits (Condrey and Neal one hit apiece) and three walks (Madson (2), Neal (1), while striking out 2 (Neal). All but one of the runs were given up on the long ball. Kendrick would take the lost for the Phils.

Mike Cervenak knocks in the Phils’ final run in the eighth. The Phils would get twelve hits, with Lou Marson leading the team with two hits. Giles, Bruntlett, Raul Ibanez, Howard, John Mayberry Jr., Geoff Jenkins, Cervenak, Donald, J.J. Fumaniak and Jorge Velandia would each record a hit.
Playing for Team USA, Rollins would go 1 for 2 with a single and a run scored while Victorino would go 1 for 3 with a single and a walk and a run scored. Pitcher Joe Bisenius would pitch one inning, giving up a run on three hits while striking out one.
