The Phils end their Grapefruit League season on a sour note as they are shutout for the second straight game as they lose to the Blue Jays, 3-0.

The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the fourth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Dioner Navarro hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Emilio Guerrero, who was pinch running for Jose Bautista, who had started the inning off with a single, stole second base as Adam Lind struck out, swinging, then went to third on catcher Carlos Ruiz’s throwing error as he tried to throw Guerrero out, giving the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays added insurance runs in the top of the eighth as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Gabe Jacobo hits a two-run single, knocking in Josh Thole, who had started the inning off with a walk, moved up to second base on Guerrero’s single, then went to third base on Jonathan Diaz’s sacrifice bunt, 1-4, and Guerrero, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on Diaz’s sacrifice bunt, giving the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead, before moving up to second base on left fielder Leandro Castro’s throwing error to the plate. That would end up being the final score as Wil Browning collected the save as he ended a Phils’ threat as they loaded up the bases with Reid Brignac being hit by a pitch, before stealing second base, a walk to Edgar Duran, and a walk to Clete Thomas, and with two men out, as he struck out Koyie Hill, looking, for the game’s final out.

A.J. Burnett (1-3, 6.05) took the lost as he pitched five innings, giving up a run on three hits, a walk and a hit batter, while striking out six. Jonathan Pettibone pitched two scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk, while striking out two. Mario Hollands pitched a third of an inning, giving up two runs on a hit and a walk. Justin De Fratus pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two hits, while striking out two. Jonathan Papelbon threw a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Drew Hutchinson (1-1, 1.80) got the win as he threw five and a third scoreless innings, giving up a hit and three walks, while striking out three. Brett Cecil collected his third hold of the spring as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, striking out a batter, as he retired both batters that he would faced. Casey Janssen received his first hold of the season as he threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two. Marcus Walden also received his first hold of the spring as he also threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Wil Browning received his first save of the spring as he threw a scoreless inning, giving up two walks and a hit batter, while striking out the side.

The Phils had only one hit in the game, a fourth inning single by Jimmy Rollins. The Phils also had five walks (Ryan Howard, Marlon Byrd, John Mayberry, Jr. Edgar Duran, Clete Thomas), a hit batter (Reid Brignac) and two stolen bases (Rollins (3), Brignac (1)) in the game, while the defense committed two errors (Carlos Ruiz, Leandro Castro).

The next Phils (9-17-3) game will be the first of two against the Pittsburgh Pirates for the On-Deck Series at Citizens Bank Park. The game is to start at 7:05 pm EDT tomorrow night. The Phils will send to the mound Kyle Kendrick (1-0, 4.09) while the Pirates will counter with Charlie Morton (1-1, 1.13). The Phils hope to do well in these last two spring training games.

The Phils took the lead in the top of the second as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Bobby Abreu hits an RBI single, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier reach base on third baseman Kelly Johnson’s fielding error, his second of the inning, before moving up to second base as Dom Brown, who had started the inning off by reaching base on third baseman Johnson’s first fielding error of the inning, is thrown out at third base as he tried to score on the error, 7-2, for the inning’s first out, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the top of the third as, with two men out, Ryan Howard hits a solo home run, his third home run of the spring, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 3-0 lead one batter later as Marlon Byrd follows with a solo home run of his own, his second home run of the spring. The Phils added to their lead in the top of the sixth as, with a man on second, and with one man out, Brown hits an RBI single, scoring Byrd, who had just doubled, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead. The Phils then took a 5-0 lead one batter later as, after Brown had stolen second base, and with still one man out, Ruiz hits an RBI single, knocking in Brown. The Phils then made it a 6-0 lead in the top of the ninth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Tony Gwynn, Jr. hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Edgar Duran, who had earlier singled, then went to third base on John Mayberry, Jr’s single. That would end up being the final score as Barry Enright pitched a scoreless ninth, getting Yangervis Solarte to pop out to the third baseman for the final out.

Jeff Manship (2-0, 1.80) gets the win as he pitched four shutout innings, giving up five hits, while striking out two. Mike Adams received his first hold of the spring as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Justin De Fratus, Brad Lincoln, Shawn Camp and Barry Enright combined for four scoreless innings, giving up two hits (Lincoln (1), Enright (1)) and a walk (Lincoln) between them, while striking out five (De Fratus (1), Lincoln (2), Camp (1), Enright (1)). Adam Warren pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two walks, while striking out a batter. David Phelps (1-1, 2.61) took the lost as he gave up an unearned run on a hit, and two errors. Vidal Nuno pitched an inning, giving up two runs on two hits. David Robertson and Matt Thorton combined for two scoreless innings, giving up a walk (Robertson) between them, while striking out one (Thorton). Shane Greene pitched an inning, giving up two runs on three hits. Shawn Kelley and David Herndon would combine for two scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Kelley) and two walks (Herndon) between them, while striking out a batter (Kelley). Matt Daley pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out two.

The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Marlon Byrd leading the team with two hits, a double and a solo home run. Ben Revere (Single), Ryan Howard (Home Run, RBI), Dom Brown (Single, RBI), Carlos Ruiz (Single, RBI), Bobby Abreu (Single, RBI), Edgar Duran (Single) and John Mayberry, Jr. (Single), had the other seven Phils’ hits. Tony Gwynn, Jr. knocked in the final Phil run with a sac fly. The Phils also had five walks (Revere, Howard, Ruiz, Abreu, Cody Asche) and two stolen bases (Revere (6), Brown (2)) in the game.

The Phils (9-15-3) next spring training game is with the Tigers (12-12) in a game already in progress.

The Phils took the lead in the top of the second as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Ryan Howard and Dom Brown, with Howard stopping at second base, and a walk to John Mayberry, Jr., moving up both runners, and with nobody out, Cody Asche hits into a 3-6 force out, scoring Howard, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, as Brown stops at second base, and Mayberry is wiped out at second base for the inning’s first out, as Asche ends up safe at first. The Phils then made it a 2-0 lead as Cameron Rupp follows with an RBI ground out, 5-3, knocking in Brown, while moving Asche up to second base. The Phils added to their lead in the top of the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Mayberry and Asche, with Mayberry stopping at second base, and a walk to Rupp, moving up both runners, and with one man out,  Tony Gwynn, Jr.  hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Mayberry, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 4-0 lead one batter later as, with two men on, and now with two men out, Ben Revere hits an RBI single, knocking in Asche, while sending Rupp up to second base. The Blue Jays get a run back in the bottom of the fifth as, with a runner on first, and with two men out, Colby Rasmus hits an RBI double, knocking in pinch runner Munenori Kawasaki, who was pinch running for Brett Lawrie, who had just singled, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. The Blue Jays then made it a 4-3 Phils lead as, with two men on, via a lead-off single by Gabe Jacobo, and a single by Josh Thole, moving Jacobo up to second base, and with nobody out, Brett Carroll hits a two-run double, knocking in both Jacobo and Thole, before being thrown out at third base, as he tried to stretch it into a triple, 8-6-5, for the inning’s first out. The Phils would get a run back in the top of the eighth as, with a man on second, and with one man out, Rupp hits an RBI double, knocking in Mayberry, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Reid Brignac’s ground out, 5-3, giving the Phils a 5-3 lead. The Phils then made it a 6-3 lead as Gwynn follows with an RBI double, scoring Rupp. That would end up before the final score as, with still only one man out, the game would first be stopped and then be called an official game because of the rain.

Dave Buchanan (1-1, 2.25) gets the win as he pitched two 1-2-3 innings, striking out two. Mario Hollands collected his first hold of the spring as he threw one and one-third scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk, while striking out two. Phillippe Aumont received his third hold of the spring as he pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings, striking out a batter. Greg Smith pitched one and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while striking out a batter. Hector Neris collected his first save of the spring as he pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only man whom he would face. Brandon Morrow (0-2, 9.00) took the lost a he pitched five innings, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out four. Jeremy Jeffress and Casey Janssen  combined for two scoreless innings, giving up three hits (Jeffress (1), Janssen (2)) between them, while striking out a batter (Jeffress). Sergio Santos pitched to one batter, being unable to get him out, as he gave up a run on a hit. Tony Davis pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on two hits.

The Phils had eleven hits in the game, with John Mayberry, Jr. (Singles) and Cody Asche (Singles, RBI), both leading the team with two hits each. Ben Revere (Single, RBI), Ryan Howard (Single), Dom Brown (Single), Cameron Rupp (Double, 2 RBIs), Tony Gwynn, Jr, (Double, 2 RBIs), Edgar Duran (Single) and Cesar Hernandez (Single), had the other seven Phils’ hits. The Phils also had three walks (Jimmy Rollins, Mayberry, Rupp), a stolen base (Rollins (2)) and a sacrifice fly (Gwynn), in the game, while the defense had an outfield assist (Gwynn).

The Phils (8-15-3) will play their next spring training game against the Yankees (15-10) at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida. The game is to start at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will start Jeff Manship (1-0, 2.25) while the Yankees’ starter is still to be announced. The Phils will be trying for their third straight Grapefruit League win, as spring training gets closer to the end.
