The Phillies would score their first run in the first inning as Jayson Werth would hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who has earlier gotten on base with an infield single, stole second and then went to third on catcher Luke Carlin’s throwing error, to give the Phillies a quick 1-0 lead. The game would then become a pitchers’ duel between Phillies’ starter Hamel and Padres’ starter Cha Seung Baek from the bottom of the first to the beginning of the sixth inning, when, with one out, Pat Burrel would hit a solo shot off of Baek, his twenty-ninth home run of the year, to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. The Padres would then get on the scoreboard in their half of the sixth, as, with two men on and two outs, Chase Headley would hit a RBI single, scoring Kevin Kouzmanoff, who has singled earlier, and has gone to second on Adrian Gonzalez’s single, to make the score 2-1 Phillies, while Gonzalez would move on to second. Hamels would finally end the inning by getting Edgar Gonzalez to ground out, short to first. That would end up being the final score as Brad Lidge would strike out the side in the ninth for his thirtieth save in thirty tries.
Cole Hamels would get the win, his first since July 3, as he pitches eight strong innings, giving up only one earned run on seven hits. His record is now 10-8, with a 3.22 ERA. Brad Lidge would pitch the ninth, striking out the side as he recorded his thirtieth save. Cha Seung Baek would take the lost, as he pitches six innings, giving up two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits. His record is now 4-8 with a 4.99 ERA. Mike Adams would pitch a scoreless inning, giving up a hit. Wilfredo Ledezma would pitch a third of an inning, giving up no runs and no hits. Brian Falkenborg would pitch one and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball, giving up just one hit.
The Phillies’ offense, despite the victory, is still asleep, as for the third straight game it is only able to get six hits, although helping to lead to a series victory over the Padres, thanks mainly to Cole Hamels’ pitching effort. The Phillies will now come back home for a nine games home stand against the Nationals (3), the Dodgers (4) and the Mets (2), praying that the offense will finally wake up before both the Dodgers and the Mets come to town.
The Phillies (66-58) still trail the Mets by two games as they won their third straight game against the Pirates. They are ahead of the seemingly fading Marlins by three and a half games as they lost to the Cubs. The Phillies will be coming back to Philly as they have tomorrow off, wondering how bad the fans’ reaction will be to Jimmy Rollins’ ‘front runners’ comment. Hey Jimmy, I hope you have a flak jacket ready, ’cause you are going to be getting a lot of flak from the fans on Tuesday night, mark my words.
The Phillies defeat the best in the West with bats and pitching.
The Phillies increased their National League East lead to a full game over the Marlins as their bats wake up in the Phoenix heat as they crush the Arizona Diamondbacks, 11-4. Moyer, who pitched an excellent game, would go seven innings against the Diamondbacks, giving up only two earned runs on six hits and striking out five, as he evened his record to 2-2. The Phils scored first in the first inning with a sacrifice fly by Ryan Howard off of Diamondbacks’ starter, and loser, Max Scherzer, scoring Shane Victorino, who has started the game off with a double. The Diamondbacks would tie the game in the second on a triple by Stephen Drew, who knocked in Chris Snyder, who has reached base while he hit into a force out. The Phils would then explode for four runs in the third, batting around for the first of two times that night. The first Philles run of the inning would come on a Geoff Jenkins single, scoring Chase Utley, who has earlier doubled. Howard would score the Phils second run on a Drew error of a Pedro Feliz groundball. Jenkins would next score the third run of the inning by coming in on a Carloz Ruiz single. Moyer would then help his own cause by hitting a RBI double off of Scherzer, knocking in Feliz, making the score at the time, Phillies 5, Diamondbacks 1. The Phils would add four more runs in the seventh inning, as they batted around for the second time. The first three runs would score on a Eric Bruntlett triple, scoring Jenkins and Ruiz, who have both singled, and Victorino, who has walked. Bruntlett would then scored the Phils fourth run of the inning off of a Howard single, making the score 9-1 Phils. All four Phils runs were off of Edgar Gonzalez, who was pitching his third inning of relief for Scherzer, soon ending up giving up four earned runs on seven hits. The Diamondbacks would answer with one run of their own in the bottom of the seventh as Moyer gives up a solo home run to Snyder, his second of the year. The Phils would then add single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, with their tenth run of the game coming on a Greg Dobbs sacrifice fly off of Brandon Medders, scoring Feliz, who has doubled earlier, and the eleventh and final run coming on a Mark Reynolds fielding error, which would score Utley, who has doubled earlier in the inning. The Diamondbacks would score their final two runs in their half of the ninth off of Clay Condrey. The first would come on a Reynolds single, scoring Miguel Montero, who has earlier singled, with no one out, and the second on a Chris Burke ground out, bringing in Reynolds, now with two outs. Condrey would then end the inning and the game with a ground outs, giving the Phillies a 11-4 victory.
The Phils’ winning pitcher, Moyer, increased his record to 2-2 as he lowered his ERA to 4.15. Ryan Madson would pitch the eighth, giving up no runs on one hit, while Condrey pitched the ninth, giving up two earned runs on four hits. The Diamondbacks’ starting pitcher, Scherzer, would take the lost, watching his record go to 0-1 and his ERA climb to 2.16, as he pitched four innings, giving up five runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits. After Gonzalez, Medders and Doug Slaten would each pitch an inning, with Medders giving up an earned run on two hits and Slaten an unearned run on one hit.
The Phils bats would come alive with Jenkins leading the charge as he goes 3 for 6, followed by Ruiz, who went 3 for 5, then Victorino, Bruntlett and Feliz, who all went 2 for 5, and Utley, who went 2 for 4, with Victorino and Feliz both hitting doubles, Utley hitting two doubles, and Bruntlett hitting a triple. Even Moyer got into the act, going 2 for 3 with a double. The Phils also received four walks. Also, the Phils would win the ballgame without hitting a home run. The only member of the starting eight not to get a hit or to get on base with a walk was Pat Burrell, who went 0 for 5.
With the victory, the Phils increased their lead in the National League East to 1 game over the Florida Marlins, who had the day off last night, and 1.5 games ahead of the Mets, who has lost to the Dodgers, 5-1.
The Phils continue their four game set with the Diamondbacks tonight at 9:40 pm Eastern (6:40 pm Pacific) at Chase Field in Phoenix as they send out Adam Eaton (0-0, 4.72), who is still looking for his first victory of the season after six tries. His opponent will be Randy Johnson (1-1, 4.79), who is also coming off of a no-decision, as he pitched four innings against the Houston Astros on April 30, giving up six earned runs on nine hits in the Diamondbacks’ 8-7 win.
