The bats continued to sleep as the Phils lose to the Braves, 9-1.

Philadelphia_PhilliesThe Phils continue having a hard time getting hits as they lose their second straight spring training game to the Braves, losing 9-1.

The game stays a 0-0 tie until the bottom of the fifth as Dan Uggla hits a lead-off home run, his second home run of the spring, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead. The Braves would increase their lead in the bottom of the sixth as, with a runner on first, and with nobody out, Edward Salcedo hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the spring, knocking in Jason Heyward, who had started the inning off with a single, giving the Braves a 3-0 lead. The Braves would make it a 4-0 lead five batters later as, with two men on, and with two men out, Andrelton Simmons hits an RBI single, knocking in Jose Constanza, who had earlier singled, then stopped at second base on Uggla’s infield single, while sending pinch runner Philip Gosselin, who was pinch running for Uggla, up to second base. The Braves then made it a 6-0 lead as Jordan Schafer hits a two-run triple, knocking in Gosselin, and pinch runner Elmer Reyes, who was pinch running for Simmons. The Phils would get a run back in the top of the seventh as, with two men on, and with two men out, Kevin Frandsen hits an RBI single, scoring Tony Gwynn, Junior, who had started the inning off with a walk, then moved up to second base on Marlon Byrd’s walk, making it a 6-1 Braves’ lead, while sending pinch runner Clete Thomas, who was pinch running for Byrd, up to second base. The Braves would get the run back in the bottom of the eighth as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Gosselin hits an RBI single, knocking in Evan Gattis, who had started the inning off with a ground-rule double, then moved up to third base on Constanza’s ground out, 4-3, giving the Braves a 7-1 lead. The Braves then made it a 9-1 lead two batters later as, with a man still on first base, and now with two men out, Todd Cunningham hits a two-run home run, his second home run of the spring, scoring Gosselin. That would end up being the final score as Cory Gearrin threw a 1-2-3 ninth.

David Buchanan threw three scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk. Sean O’Sullivan took the lost (1-1, 7.04) as he pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, while he struck out a batter. Kyle Simon pitched a third of an inning, striking out the only man whom he would face. Antonio Bastardo pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Jake Diekman pitched an inning, giving up three runs on three hits, as he struck out a batter. Julio Teheran pitched four 1-2-3 innings, striking out three. Atahualpa Severino (1-1, 11.25) got the win as he threw an inning, plus one batter, walking a batter. Anthony Varvaro collected his third hold of the spring as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Craig Kimbrel pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit and two walks, while striking out a batter. Juan Jaime and Cory Gearrin combined for two scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Jaime), while striking out a batter (Gearrin) between them.

The Phils had only two hits in the game, an RBI single by Kevin Frandsen and a single by Reid Brignac. The Phils also had three walks (Tony Gwynn, Jr., Marlon Byrd, Cody Asche) in the game, while the defense performed a doubleplay.

The Phils (2-10-2) play their next spring training game against the Baltimore Orioles (9-3), at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Florida. The game is to start at 1.05 pm EDT. The Phils plan to send to the mound A.J. Burnett (0-2, 12.60) who be trying to recover from his previous spring training start. The Orioles plan to counter with Ubaldo Jimenez (1-0, 0.00). The Phils will be trying to get out of their present hitless funk, before it can get any worst.
