33 games in 31 days: Game #5: Roy Oswalt joins the victory parade as he help leads the Phils to a team record as the Phils defeat the fish, 5-3.
Roy Oswalt pitches well enough to win, leading the Phils to a club record 42 wins over .500, as the Phils defeat the Marlins, 5-3.
The Phils took the lead in the first as, with a man on third, via a lead-off triple by Shane Victorino, and with nobody out, Placido Polanco hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Victorino, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Marlins would tie the game up at one-all in their half of the first as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Greg Dobbs hits into a double play, wiping out at second base Omar Infante, who had earlier reached base on a bunt single, while scoring Emilio Bonifacio, who had started the Marlin’s inning off with a double, then went to third base on Infante’s bunt single. The Marlins took the lead in the third as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Mike Stanton hits into an RBI ground out, 6-3, knocking in Infante, who had started the inning off with a double, then moved up to third on Dobbs’ ground out, 4-3, giving the Marlins a 2-1 lead. The Phils then retook the lead in the fifth as, with one man on, with Hunter Pence reaching first base on shortstop Bonifacio’s throwing error, and with nobody out, John Mayberry, Jr. hits a two-run home run, his thirteenth home run of the season, scoring Pence, giving the Phils a 3-2 lead. The Phils added to their lead in the sixth as, with the bases loaded, via Chase Utley being hit by a pitch, a walk by Ryan Howard, sending Utley to second base, a wild pitch by Chris Hatcher, moving both runners up a base, and a walk by Pence, and with nobody out, Mayberry hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Utley, giving the Phils a 4-2 lead. The Marlins cut the Phils’ lead down to 4-3 as, with two men out, Jose Lopez hits a solo home run, his sixth home run of the season. The Phils got the run back in the seventh as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Victorino, who had earlier singled, then went to second base on right fielder’s Stanton’s missed catch error, before going to third on Polanco’s ground out, 4-3, scored on Michael Dunn’s wild pitch, giving the Phils a 5-3 lead. That would end up being the final score as Ryan Madson recorded his twenty-seventh save of the year with a scoreless ninth.
Roy Oswalt (7-8, 3.80) got the win as he pitched six and one-third innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and one walk, while striking out seven. Michael Stutes received his ninth hold of the year as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a walk. Antonio Bastardo recorded his sixteenth hold of the year as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Ryan Madson recorded his twenty-sixth save of the year, as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while he struck out two. Brad Hand (1-5, 4.23) took the lost as he went five innings plus two batters, as he gave up four runs, three of which were earned, on four hits and three walks, while striking out four. Chris Hatcher pitched a scoreless inning, walking two batters, while striking out two. Ryan Webb pitched a third of an inning, giving up an unearned run on a hit. Michael Dunn and Jose Ceda combined for two and two-thirds scoreless innings, giving up two hits (Ceda) and a walk (Ceda), while striking out three (Dunn (1), Ceda (2)) between them.
The Phils had seven hits in the ballgame, with Shane Victorino leading the team with two hits, a single and a triple. Placido Polanco (Single, RBI), Hunter Pence (Single), John Mayberry, Jr. (Home Run, 3 RBIs), Carlos Ruiz (Single) and Wilson Valdez (Double) had the other five Phils’ hits. The other Phil run came in on a wild pitch.
The Phils (88-46, 1st) continues their series with the Marlins (60-77, 5th) with a night game for tonight. The game will be played at Sun Life Stadium and will begin at 7:10 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (13-7, 2.58), who is coming off a no-decision against the Reds on August 29, as he went six innings, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out seven, in the Phil’s 3-2 win. He will once again be going for win no. 14, while trying to give the bats a shot at their sixth straight win. The Marlins will counter with Ricky Nolasco (9-10, 4.34), who is coming off a lost against the Mets on August 29, as he went six and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on nine hits, while striking out three, in the Marlins’ 5-1 lost. He will be trying to end the Phils’ winning streak. The Phils will be going for their sixth straight win.
Saturday: Countdown to the Playoffs, Game # 14: The Phils hurt the Nats with the long ball as they win, 5-2.
The Phils hits three home runs as they go on to defeat the Nats, 5-2, staying three games ahead of the Braves in the NL East.
The Nats took the lead in the first as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Ian Desmond hits an RBI triple, knocking in Danny Espinosa, who had earlier singled, giving the Nats a 1-0 lead. The Nats tried to add to their lead latter that inning, as they loaded up the bases via Ryan Zimmerman being hit by the pitch, and then a walk to Michael Morse, moving Zimmerman up to second base, and now with two men out, but Kyle Kendrick got out of the inning by getting Wilson Ramos to ground out, 4-3, to end the inning. The Phils then tied it up at one-all in the second as Jayson Werth hits a lead-off home run, his twenty-third home run of the season. Three batters later, with two men on, and with still nobody out, Wilson Valdez hits an RBI double, scoring Raul Ibanez, who had earlier singled, and moved up to second on Carlos Ruiz’s single, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while sending Ruiz, who had just singled, up to third base. The Phils increased their lead in the third as, with a man on, and with nobody out, Ryan Howard hits a two-run home run, his thirtieth home run of the season, establishing a new club record as he now has hit 30 or more home runs and driven in 100 or more RBIs in five straight seasons, breaking the old record held by both him and Hall of Famer Chuck Klein, as he knocks in Chase Utley, who had just walked, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. Two batters later, with one man out, Ibanez hits a solo home run, his fifteenth home run of the season, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead. The Nats get a run back in the sixth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Morse hits an RBI single, knocking in Zimmerman, who had earlier doubled, making it a 5-2 Phils’ lead. That would be the final score as the Phils’ bullpen would handle the Nats for the last three innings, with Brad Lidge recording his twenty-third save of the season as he pitches a 1-2-3 ninth, getting Desmond to end the game by grounding out softly to the pitcher, 1-3.
Kyle Kendrick gets the win as he pitches six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out three. His record is now 10-9 with a 4.78 ERA. Chad Durbin collects his fifteenth hold of the season as he pitches a scoreless inning, walking a batter, while striking out two. Ryan Madson pitches his thirteen hold of the year as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and two walks, while striking out one. Brad Lidge would record his twenty-third save of the year as he pitches a 1-2-3 ninth. Jordon Zimmermann took the lost as he pitches only three innings, giving up five runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out three. His record is now 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA. Craig Stammen, Ross Detwiller, Tyler Clippard and Collin Balester combine for five scoreless innings, giving up three hits, (Detwiller (2), Balester (1)) and three walks (Detwiller (1), Clippard (1), Balester (1)) between them.
The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Raul Ibanez and Wilson Valdez both leading the team with three hits each, with Ibanez’s hits being two singles and a solo home run, knocking in a run, while Vladez’s hits were two singles and a double, also knocking in a run. Shane Victorino followed with two hits, both singles. Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and Carlos Ruiz had the other four Phils’ hits, with Utley and Ruiz’s hits being singles, while Howard’s hit was a two-run home run, and Werth’s hit was a solo home run. The Phils’ offense continue to gets hit, as they now head for a sweep with the Nats, while keeping a three-game lead over the Braves, as they defeat the Mets in an afternoon game.
