As the Phils get close to stablizing their roster, they crush the Rays, 10-1.

The Rays scored first in the third as, with one man on, and with two men out, Sean Rodriguez hits an RBI double, scoring Jason Bourgeois, who had earlier singled, giving the Rays a 1-0 lead, before going on to third on the late throw to the plate. The Phils then tied the game up at one-all in the fifth as, with runners on second and third, and with nobody out, Kevin Frandsen hits an RBI groundout, three-unassisted, scoring Ryan Howard, who had started the inning off with a single, then stopped at third base on Dom Brown’s double, while sending Brown, who had just doubled, over to third base. The Phils then took the lead one batter later as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Pete Orr hits an RBI single, knocking in Brown, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead. The Phils then made it a 4-1 lead as Freddy Galvis hits a two-run home run, his third home run of the spring. The Phils increased their lead in the sixth as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Brown hits an RBI double, scoring Chase Utley, who had started the inning off with a double, then stopped at third base on Howard’s single, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead, while sending Howard, who had earlier singled, over to third base. The Phils then made it a 7-1 lead as Frandsen followed Brown with a two-run double, scoring both Howard and Brown. Two batters later, with a man still on second base, and now with one man out, Galvis hits an RBI single, scoring Frandsen, giving the Phils an 8-1 lead, before moving up to second base on the late throw home. The Phils then made it a 9-1 lead as Humberto Qunitero hits an RBI single, scoring Galvis, before moving up to second base on the late throw to the plate. The Phils added to their lead in the eighth as, with a runner on second base, and with two men out, Quintero, who had earlier reached base with a double, would score on a throwing error by first baseman Shelley Duncan on a grounder hit by Ender Inciarte, giving the Phils a 10-1 lead. That would be the final score as Jonathan Papelbon pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Raul Valdes received a no-decision as he went three innings, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out five. Michael Stutes threw a scoreless inning, walking a batter. The Phils (14-15)  play their next spring training game against the Tigers (18-12) at Joker Merchant Park in Jupiter, Florida. The game is to start at 1:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (2-0, 1.13), who is coming off a strong start against the Red Sox on March 21, receiving a no-decision, as he went six innings, giving up just one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out five, in the Phils’ 6-1 lost. He will be going for one final strong start as he prepare to be the Phils’ opening day pitcher. The Tigers will counter with Justin Verlander (1-2, 4.74), who is coming off a lost against the Astros on March 21, as he went five and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on six hits, as he struck out five, in the Tigers’ 7-2 lost. He will be trying to end his spring training with a good start. The Phils will be trying to do well in their last spring training game on the road.

The Phils took the lead in the first as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Chase Utley reaches first base on first baseman Kyle Roller’s fielding error, allowing Jimmy Rollins, who had started the game off with a walk, then reached second base on Ben Revere’s single, to score, giving the Phils’ a 1-0 lead, while Revere, who had just singled, would move up to third base on the error. The Phils then made it a 2-0 lead as Ryan Howard hits into a 4-6-3 double play, wiping out Utley at second base, as Revere scored. The Phils increased their lead in the second as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Rollins hits a two-run double, scoring John Mayberry, Jr., who had earlier reached base on third baseman Kevin Youkilis’ fielding error, then stopped at third base on Steven Lerud’s single, and Lerud, who had just singled, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead. The Phils then added to their lead in the third as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Michael Young, and walks to Dom Brown and Darin Ruf, and with two men out, Mayberry hits a two-run single, knocking in Young and Brown, giving the Phils a 6-0 lead, while sending Ruf over to third base. The Phils would tie the game up at one-all in the sixth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Kevin Frandsen hits an RBI double, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier walked, then stopped at second base as Ben Revere grounded out, 1-3, for the inning’s second out. The Yankees regained the lead in the seventh as, with a man on first, and with one man out, JR Murphy hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the spring, scoring Adonis Garcia, who had just singled, giving the Yanks a 3-1 lead. The Phils would cut the Yanks’ lead in half in their half of the seventh as, with one man out, Domonic Brown hits a solo home run, his second home run of the spring, making it a 3-2 Yanks’ lead. The Phils will send to the mound newly acquired starter John Lannan (0-0, -.-), who will be making his first spring training start. He will be trying to even up the Phils’ win-loss record. The Twins will counter with Kevin Correia (0-0, 4.50), who gave up a run against the Orioles on February 23, as he pitched two innings, in the Twins’ 5-3 lost. He will be trying to get the Twins over the .500 mark in Grapefruit League action. The Phils will be seeing if they can even up their spring training record, while trying to heat him their bats, to give some runs support to the good starting pitching that they have so far received, while hoping that the bullpen will improve, before the first cuts are made.

The Phils tied the game up at one-all in the fifth as Brian Schneider hits a lead-off solo home run, his first home run of the spring. After neither team is able to score for the next seven frames, the Phils would win the ballgame in their half of the ninth as, with the bases loaded, via a double by Schneider, who is then pinch runned for by Tuffy Gosewisch, a single by Juan Pierre, sending Gosewisch to third base, and Pete Orr being hit by a pitch, sending Pierre up to second base, and with one man out, pinch hitter Hector Luna hits an RBI single, knocking in Gosewisch, giving the Phils a 2-1 walk-off win.

The Pirates cut the Phils’ lead down to 2-1 in the seventh as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Gorkys Hernandez, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, before moving on to third on Yamaico Navarro’s ground out, 4-3, would score on a Michael Martinez fielding error on a Casey McGehee grounder. The Phils got the run back in the eighth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Dom Brown hits an RBI triple, knocking in Martinez, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on Freddy Galvis’ sacrifice bunt, 1-3, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. David Herndon recorded his second hold of the spring, as he pitched an inning, giving up an unearned run on a hit, while striking out a batter. Antonio Bastardo received his second hold of the spring as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit. Michael Schwimer recorded his first save of the spring as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Charlie Morton received a no-decison as he pitched two innings, giving up four hits, while striking out two. Chris Resop (1-1, 3.60) took the lost as he went two inning, giving up a run on a hit, while striking out a batter. Tony Watson pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit. Rudy Owens pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Ryota Igarashi pitched two innings, giving up two runs on three hits, as he struck out two. Juan Cruz pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk, while striking out a batter.

The Phils had nine hits in the ballgame, a solo home run by Jimmy Rollins, a single by Juan Pierre, an RBI triple by Dom Brown, a single by Shane Victorino, an RBI single by pinch hitter Kevin Frandsen, a solo home run by Hector Luna, a single by Scott Podsednik and a single by Michael Martinez. The Phils also had a walk in the game.

Spring Training: The Phils finished their split squad game with the Tigers in an extra-innings, 4-4 tie.

The Phils second split squad game end up as an extra-innings 4-4 tie with the Tigers, after 10 innings of play.

Detroit took the lead in the first as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Ryan Raburn hits a two-run home run, knocking in Ramon Santiago, who had started the game off with a double, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead. The Phils cut the Tigers’ lead in half in the third as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Freddy Galvis hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Pete Orr, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Brian Schneider’s single, making it a 2-1 Tigers’ lead. The Tigers then increased their lead in the fourth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Clete Thomas hits an RBI force out, 6-4, wiping out Don Kelly, who had just singled, at second out, scoring Andy Dirks, who had earlier walked, then stopped at third on Kelly’s single, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead. The Phils would get that run back in their half of the fourth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, John Mayberry, Jr. hits an RBI ground out, 5-3, knocking in Hunter Pence, who had earlier doubled, then went to third on Jim Thome’s ground out, 6-3, making it a 3-2 Tigers’ lead. The Tigers got that run back in the fifth as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Raburn hits an RBI double, knocking in Santiago, who had just singled, giving the Tigers a 4-2 lead. The Phils got the run back in their half of the fifth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Thome hits an RBI single, scoring Galvis, who had earlier been hit by the pitch, then moved up to second base on Jimmy Rollins’ walk, cutting the Tigers’ lead down to 4-3, while sending Rollins, who had earlier walked, up to second base. The Phils then tied the game up at four-all in the sixth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Galvis hits an RBI single, scoring Laynce Nix, who had earlier walked, then stopped at second base on Orr’s single, while sending Orr, who had just singled, on to second base. It would remain at 4-4 as neither team would be able to score from that point, before the game was called after ten innings.

Cliff Lee pitched three innings, giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out three. Chad Qualls pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit and walk.  Jonathan Papelbon pitched an inning, also giving up a run on two hits. Phillippe Aumont, J.C. Ramirez, Jake Diekman, B.J. Rosenberg and Tyson Brummentt combined for five scoreless innings, as they gave up four walks (Aumont (2), Ramirez (1), Rosenberg (1)) between them, while striking out two (Diekman).  Rick Porcello pitched four innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out two. Daniel Schlereth collected his third save of the spring as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on a hit, a hit batter and a walk, as he struck out a batter. Jose Ortega blew his first save opportunity of the spring as he went an inning and a third, giving up a run on a hit and a walk. Chris Bootcheck, Brayan Villarreal and Robbie Weinhardt combined for four scoreless innings, giving up three hits (Bootcheck (2), Villarreal (1)), while striking out one (Villarreal).

The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Pete Orr (Singles) leading the team with three hits, followed by Laynce Nix with two hits, both singles. Jimmy Rollins (Single), Hunter Pence (Double), Derek Mitchell (Single), Jim Thome (Single, RBI), John Mayberry, Jr. (Single, RBI), Brian Schneider (Single) and Freddy Galvis (Single, 2 RBIs) had the other seven Phils’ hits.  The Phils also had three walks in the game.

The Phils (4-5-1) will continue their grapefruit league schedule with an afternoon game with the Pirates (3-6) at Bradenton, Florida. The game will begin at 1:05 pm EDT.

Spring Training: The Phils lose 1-0 to the Orioles on a solo home run.

The Phils’ spring training record even up at four-four as they lose 1-0 to the Orioles on a solo home run.

In the fourth, Chris Davis breaks up a 0-0 tie with a lead-off solo home run, his first home run of the spring, giving the Orioles a 1-0 lead. That would end up being the only score as neither team would be able to mount up much of an offense.

Joe Blanton received a no-decision as he pitched three strong innings, giving up four hits and a walk, while striking out three. Scott Elarton (0-1, 1.50) took the lost as he pitched four innings, giving up a run on a hit, while striking out four. Raul Valdes and Joe Savery combined for two 1-2-3 innings, striking out two batters (Valdes) between them. Brian Matusz (1-1, 4.50) got the win as he pitched four scoreless innings, giving up three hits, while striking out four. Alfredo Simon picked up his first hold of the spring as he pitched three scoreless innings, giving up two hits, while he struck out three. Oscar Villarreal also picked up his first hold of the spring as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Miguel Socolovich picked up his first save of the spring as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out one.

The Phils had six hits in the game, with Tuffy Gosewisch (Single, Double), leading the team with two hits. Jimmy Rollins (Single), Placido Polanco (Single), Shane Victorino (Double) and Laynce Nix (Single) had the other four Phils’ hits, as the team was unable to mustard up an offense. The Phils also had a stolen base (Scott Podsednik) in the game.

The Phils (4-4) next grapefruit league game will be a pair of split squad games, one against the Tigers at Bright House Field in Clearwater, and the other against the Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida. Both games will start at 1:05 pm EDT.

The Phils took the lead in the second as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Ty Wigginton hits an RBI double, knocking in Hunter Pence, who had just singled, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Jim Thome, and walks to Wigginton and John Mayberry, Jr., and with two men out, Laynce Nix received an RBI walk, forcing in Thome, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead, while moving both Wigginton and Mayberry up a base. The Phils then took a 4-0 lead in the fifth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Shane Victorino hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the spring, knocking in Placido Polanco, who had just singled. The Pirates started to chip away at the Phils’ lead in the sixth as, with a runner on second, and with nobody out, Casey McGehee hits an RBI single, knocking in Josh Harrison, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. Two batters later, with runners on second and third, and with still nobody out, Matt Hague hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, scoring McGehee, who had stopped at third on Rod Barajas’ double, cutting the Phils’ lead down to 4-2. Two more batters later, after Nate McLouth had hit a single, which sent Brock Holt, who was a pinch runner for Barajas, on to third base, the Pirates made it a 4-3 Phils’ lead as Gorkys Hernandez hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Holt. The Pirates then tied the game up at four-all in the eighth as Starling Marte hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the spring. The score would stay tied until the bottom of the tenth as Lou Montanez hits a lead-off, walk-off home run, his first home run of the spring, giving the Phils a 5-4 walk-off win.

Cole Hamels received a no-decision as he pitched three and two-thirds scoreless innings, giving up four hits, while striking out two. Dave Bush pitched two and a third-innings, giving up three runs on four hits, while striking out a batter. Antonio Bastardo received his first hold of the spring as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning. David Purcey blew his first save attempt of the spring as he pitched an inning, giving up a run on one hit, as he struck out one. Phillippe Aumont pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Michael Schwimer (1-0, 0.00) got the win as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. James McDonald also received a no-decision as he pitched three innings, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out a batter. Justin Wilson pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on a hit and three walks. Brian Tallet pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only man who he would face. Jared Hughes pitched an inning, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk. Daniel Moskos, Bryan Morris and Michael Crotta combined for four scoreless innings, giving up two hits (Morris (1), Crotta (1)) and a walk (Moskos), while striking out a batter (Moskos). Michael Dubee (0-1, 27.00) took the lost as he pitched to one batter, giving up a run on one hit.

The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Hunter Pence leading the team with two hits, both singles. Michael Martinez (Double), Placido Polanco (Single), Shane Victorino (Home Run, 2 RBIs), Jim Thome (Single), Lou Montanez (Home Run, RBI), Ty Wigginton (Double, RBI) and Freddy Galvis (Single), had the other seven Phils’ hits, while Laynce Nix had the other Phil RBI via a bases loaded walk. The Phils also collected five walks.
