Spring Training: Brett Myers gives up just a run as the Phils flatten the Blue Jays, 9-1.
Last night, Brett Myers, the now designated opening night starter, showed that he was ready to take the mound next Sunday night, as he pitched a strong four innings, giving up only one run on three scattered hits, with the run coming in on a Travis Snider solo home run in the second inning, as he struck out three. Relievers J.C. Romero and Ryan Madson then followed him, each man pitching a scoreless inning, giving up just one hit between them (Romero) while striking out a batter (Madson). Jack Taschner, making his spring training debut as a Phil after his trade to the team, then came on to pitch an inning, giving up just one hit. Brad Lidge and Gary Majewski then pitched the final two innings for the Phils, with both man pitching 1-2-3 innings, striking out three batters between them (Lidge 2, Majewski 1). Myers got the win, with his spring record now at 2-2 with a 3.52 ERA. Hopefully, it’ll be the good Brett that will be making an appearance next Sunday night.
Batting-wise, the Phillies unloaded for nine runs and fifteen hits on Blue Jays’ pitching. Jimmy Rollins, Jayson Werth, Raul Ibanez and Pedro Feliz each collected two hits, while Eric Bruntlett, Chase Utley, Pablo Ozuna, Ryan Howard, Paul Hoover, Jason Ellison and Chris Coste got the other seven. Ibanez’ two hits were a double and a two-run home run, while both Rollins and Werth would also get doubles. Ibanez knocked in three of the Phils runs, Werth plated two, while Bruntlett, Howard, Ozuna and Matt Stairs each got an RBI, with Stairs’ RBI coming in when he was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded.
The Phillies next Grapefruit League game is this afternoon against the New York Yankees from George M. Steinbrenner Field, in Tampa, Florida. The game is presently in progress.
Spring Training: The bats wake up as the Phillies crushed the Astros, 13-3.
After being embarrassed by Jon Lester and Boston Red Sox pitching yesterday afternoon, the Phillies’ batters decided to take their frustrations out on the Astros by crushing them today via the long ball, winning by the score of 13-3.
Chan Ho Park started for the Phils today, making it harder for Uncle Charlie to decide on either him, or J.A. Happ, as the team’s fifth starter, by pitching a good game, as he gave up only two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits and a walk while striking out seven Astros in five and two-thirds innings of work. Chad Durbin relieved him in the sixth, giving up the final Astros run on a solo home run to Edwin Maysonet. His line would be one run on one hit in a third of an inning. Clay Condrey, Mike Koplove and Cedrick Bower would each pitch an inning, giving up only two hits (one apiece by Koplove and Bower) with a strikeout (Condrey). Park spring record is now 2-0 with an ERA of 2.53.
The Phillies’ bats collected fourteen hits this afternoon, with four of them being home runs. Eric Bruntlett would lead the attack with three hits, followed by Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins who each had two hits. Howard, Bruntlett and Rollins had three of the Phillies’ home runs, with both Bruntlett and Howard’s being two-run shots. Miguel Cairo, Greg Dobbs, Raul Ibanez, Geoff Jenkins, Shane Victorino, Carlos Ruiz and Pablo Ozuno had the other Phillies’ hit, with Ruiz’s hit being the final Phillies’ home run, another two-run shot, while Jenkins’ hit was a double. Bruntlett had four RBIs in the game, Ruiz knocked in three runs, Howards and Dobbs brought home two and Rollins knocked in one.
The next Phillies Grapefruit League game will be tomorrow night at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida against the Toronto Blue Jays. Game time is 7:05 pm Eastern.
Spring Training: Phillies lose a close one to the Red Sox, 3-1.
Yesterday afternoon, at Bright House Field, the Phillies were unable to knock in any runs when they needed to as they fall to the Boston Red Sox, 3-1, in Grapefruit League play. Joe Blanton started the game for the Phils and pitched a good game, despite taking the lose. Blanton pitched six and a third innings, giving up two runs on four hits, with one of them being a solo home run to Chris Carter in the second inning, and a walk while striking out four. Scott Eyre relieved him in the seventh, pitching two-thirds of an inning, getting out both men that he would face, with one of them being a strike out. Chad Durbin followed him for an inning, giving up a run on one hit, Jacoby Ellsbury’s solo home run in the eighth, as he struck out two. Ryan Madson then took the mound, pitching a scoreless inning, as he gave up two hits while striking out one. Blanton’s spring record is now 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA.
The Phillies’ batters had eight hits in the game, with Raul Ibanez leading the team with three, as he raised his spring training batting average up to .290. Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Pablo Ozuna, Jayson Werth and Pedro Feliz had the other five hits. Ryan Howard knocked in the only Phillies’ run, bringing in Rollins, as twice in the games the Phils would be unable to score any runs when they had the bases loaded.
The next Phillies’ spring training game, against the Houston Astros at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida, is presently in progress, with the Phils leading 3-2, after three innings.
Spring Training: Moyer and Phillies gets spanked by the Pirates, losing 10-4.
For the first time this spring, Jamie Moyer got roughed up on the mound. As he pitched five and two-thirds innings, the ageless wonder ended up giving up seven runs to the Bucos on eleven hits, including a solo home run to Andrew McCutchen in the fifth, and a walk while also striking out seven Pirates. There’s both good and bad news in the line. The good news is that Moyer is obviously still confusing the batters with his pitches, if the seven strikeouts are any indication. The bad news is that he got roughed up. Hopefully this will inspire him to be more clever the next time he takes the mound before he makes his first start of the season the Tuesday after next. Scott Eyre took the mound next for a third of an inning, striking out the only man he would face. Gary Majewski followed him for a scoreless inning, giving up just a hit. Brad Lidge pitched the eighth inning, giving up three runs on two hits, including a two-run shot to Garrett Jones, and a walk as he struck out one. With the lost, Moyer’s spring line is now 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA.
Among the batters, the Phillies only got four hits, with two of them being for homes runs and a third being a double. Carlos Ruiz would lead the offense, getting a double and a three-run home run in the seventh inning in three at-bats, knocking in three of the Phils four runs. His spring batting average is now at .385. Ryan Howard had one hit, a massive solo home run in the fourth, his eighth spring home run, putting his spring average up to .293. Chris Coste, now secured as the team’s back-up catcher, got the fourth and final hit in the Phillies’ 10-4 defeat.
The next Phillies spring training game will be played this afternoon at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida, as the Phils host the Boston Red Sox. The game starts at 1:05 pm Eastern.

Brett Myers started the game for the Phillies, getting dinged a bit by the Astros’ bats as he went five and a third innings, giving up four runs, including a solo home run to Miguel Tejeda in the fourth, on eight hits and a walk as he struck out a batter. Ryan Madson followed him, pitching one and two-thirds innings, giving up just two hits and no runs as he strikes out one. Robert Mosebach pitched an inning, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out one. Myers took the lost with his spring training record now at 1-2 with a 3.79 ERA

In Grapefruit League play yesterday afternoon, the Phils were for the second time in their three meetings crushed by the Yankees, this time by the score of 10-2. Pitching prospect, Carlos Carrasco, who should be headed for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, started the game for the Phils. He pitched five innings, giving up four runs to the Bronx Bombers on six hits, including a two-run home run to Hideki Matsui in the first inning, and a solo shot to Cody Ransom in the fourth, and a walk while striking out four. Clay Condrey followed with an inning of work, giving up a run on a hit and a walk as he struck out two. Brad Lidge then took the mound, pitching a 1-2-3 inning. Scott Eyre followed Lidge for an inning and gets hammered hard by the Yanks, giving up five runs on five hits, with two of them being a solo home run by Nick Swisher and a two-run shot from Melky Cabera, as he struck out one. Mike Koplove pitched the final inning, giving up no runs on no hits while striking out one. Carrasco took the lost, with his spring training record now at 2-2 with a 5.95 ERA.
Among the batters, the Phils had only six hits, with Chase Utley leading the way with two hits, including his second home run of the spring, a solo shot. Ryan Howard, Geoff Jenkins, Matt Stairs and Ronny Paulino had the other hits, with Howard’s being a solo home run, his seventh of the spring, while Paulino and Stairs’ hits were doubles.

After trailing for most of the game, the Phillies came from behind to defeat the Blue Jays, 7-6, thanks to a three-run ninth inning.
Chan Ho Park started the game for the Phillies, and produced a not too good outing which may hurt his changes in his battle with J.A. Happ for the last spot in the startingrotation. Park pitched four innings, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four Blue Jays. Robert Mosebach, who is fighting for a spot in the bullpen, follows, giving up a run on two hits and a walk in one inning of work. Chad Durbin follows him with a 1-2-3 inning, getting two strikeouts. Ryan Madson follows with a scoreless inning of his own, giving up a hit. Gary Majewski pitches two innings, giving up two runs on four hit and a walk as he strikes out a batter, while picking up the win, thanks to the Phillies scoring three runs in the top of the ninth. His spring training record is now 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA.
The Phillies’ bats collected thirteen hits today, with Jayson Werth, Pedro Feliz and Carlos Ruiz leading the way with two hits each, with one of Werth’s two hits being a solo home run. Miguel Cairo, Jason Ellison, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Eric Bruntlett, Rich Thompson and Chris Coste each got a hit, with Utley’s hit being a two-run home run. Utley would knock in three runs in the game, while Bruntlett knocks in two and Werth and Thompson knocks in a run each. Both Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino returned to the lineup after their stint with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Chad Durbin follows him to the mound, pitching an inning and a third of shut out ball, giving up no hits while walking two batters and striking out one. Mike Koplove takes over, and pitches an inning and a third of shut out ball, giving up only one hit and a walk as he strikes out one batter. Jake Woods takes the mound in the tenth, giving up only one hit as he keeps the Cardinals from scoring a run, as the Phillies play their second tie in three games. Although Carrasco is likely not going north with the main team, he is likely to get sent to Lehigh Valley for more seasoning, and possible call up if something happens to someone on the main team during the season.

Chan Ho Park, the Phils’ starter, who continues to battle for the fifth and final spot in the starting rotation, had a strong start as he went four and two-third innings, giving up only three hits to the redbirds while striking out six, as he used his pitches effectively to baffle the Cardinals’ batters. Clay Condrey relieves him in the fifth, pitching an inning and a third of shut out ball, although needing to pitch his way out of a jam in the sixth with a runner on second, Albert Pujols who had gotten on base with a double, with only one out, as he gives up only a hit and a walk while striking out one. Antonio Bastardo follows him with two innings of relief, allowing a run to score in the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Brendan Ryan, knocking in Joe Thurston from second base, who was pinch running for Khalil Greene, who had earlier doubled, as Carlos Ruiz was unable to hold onto Raul Ibanez’s throw to the plate, which at the time tied the score at one run apiece. Bastardo would go on to give up two hits while striking out two. Joe Bisenius would pitch the ninth, pitching a 1-2-3 inning, and picking up the win when the Phils scored the winning run in the bottom half of the inning. His spring training record is now 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA.

In other Phillies’ new, Cole Hamels will go back to Philadelphia tonight to have his elbow checked tomorrow morning for tightness. No serious problem is expected, but the Phils are just being cautious with their ace.

J.A. Happ, who is still impressing in the race for the final spot in the starting rotation, would pitch the final three innings, giving up what would turn out to be the game winner, a solo home run to Gabe Kapler in the sixth, on four hits and a walk while striking out a batter. His excellent performances are presently putting him in the driver seat for the fifth starter spot in the rotation. Moyer would take the lost, with his Spring Training record falling to 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA.
Batting-wise, Rays’ pitching would silence the Phillies’ bat, giving up only three hits while striking out seven batters. Miguel Cairo would get two of the Phillies’ three hits, going 2 for 3 in the game and scoring a run. Andy Tracy would get the other hit, a two-out solo home run in the ninth inning. Ryan Howard would knock in the Phils other run, as he hits a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the seventh.
The Phillies continue Grapefruit League play with a home game in Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida with the Pittsburgh Pirates, that is presently in progress.
