The Phils took the lead in the first as, with two men on, and with two men, Hunter Pence hits an RBI double, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Shane Victorino’s ground out, 4-3, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Ryan Howard, who had just walked, on to third base. The Phils then took a 2-0 lead in the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via a walk by Placido Polanco, who then reached second base on a force attempt missed catch error by shortstop Rafael Furcal on a Roy Oswalt grounder to pitcher Jake Westbrook, with Oswalt reaching first, and a single by Rollins, sending Polanco to third base, and Oswalt to second base, and with one man out, Victorino forced in a run with a walk, scoring Polanco, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead, while sending both runners up a base. The Phils added to their lead in the sixth as, with one man out, Victorino hits a solo home run, his seventeenth home run of the season, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Cards then cut the Phils’ lead down to 3-2 as David Freese hits an RBI single, scoring Pujols, while sending Berkman up to second base. The Phils got a run back in their half of the eighth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Victorino hits an RBI single, scoring Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier reached base on third baseman Daniel Descalsco’s fielding error, ending up on second base, then went to third on Rollins’ single, giving the Phils a 4-2 lead, which Rollins, who had just singled, would stop at second base. Three batters later, after Chase Utley had been hit by a pitch, loading up the bases, as both Rollins and Victorino moved up a base, and Howard had struck out, and now with two men out, Pence hits an RBI infield single, beating shortstop Furcal’s throw to first base, as Rollins scored, giving the Phils a 5-2 lead, while both runners would move up a base, leaving the bases still loaded. The Phils then busted the game wide open as Raul Ibanez hits a grand-slam home run, his nineteenth home run of the year, knocking in Victorino, Utley and Pence, giving the Phils a 9-2 lead. That would be the final score, as Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless ninth as he got Furcal to hit into a ground out, 4-3, for the final out, leading to the Phils clinching their fifth straight National League Eastern Division title.

Kyle McClellan pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit, as he struck out one. Fernando Salas pitched an inning plus one batter, giving up an unearned run, as he struck out a batter. The Phils, after suffering through another long rain delay, took the lead in the third as, with one man on, and with one man out, John Mayberry, Jr. hits an RBI triple, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils then took a 2-0 lead as Chase Utley knocked in Mayberry with an RBI double. The Phils then made it a 3-0 lead as Ryan Howard followed Utley with an RBI single, scoring Utley. Antonio Bastardo collected his fourteenth hold of the season as he also pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out one. Livan Hernandez also received a no-decision, as he went four innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks. Tom Gorzelanny and Sean Burnett combined for four scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Gorzelanny) and a walk (Burnett), while striking out four (two batters each) between them. The Phils took the lead in the fourth as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Ryan Howard hits a two-run home run, his fifth home run of the year, scoring Rollins, who had earlier singled, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Phils then added to their lead in the fifth as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Shane Victorino and Polanco, with Victorino stopping at second base, and with Howard being hit by the pitch, moving up both runners, and with one man out, Ben Francisco hits a two-run single, knocking in both Victorino and Polanco, making it a 4-0 Phils’ lead, while sending Howard up to second base. Ryan, with his six RBIs, would establish a new Phils’ record for the month of April with 27 RBIs, while Polanco, with his two hits, would establish a new Phils’ hits record for the month with 39 hits, breaking Chase Utley’s record of 38 hits. The Phils, in their last three games, had been hitting and scoring runs again. I just hope it’ll last for a while.

The Phils will send to the mound their ace, Roy Halladay (3-1, 2.41), who is coming off a win against the Padres on April 24, as he pitched eight and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on five hits and a walk, while striking out fourteen, in the Phils’ 3-1 win. Roy will be going for his second win against the Mets and his fourth for the year. The Phils offense is off to a good start in 2011…
Coming out of spring training, everyone pondered how the Phils offense would do without Jayson Werth (now a member of the Nationals) and Chase Utley (knee problems). Well, after nine games, they seems to be doing pretty well.
After nine games, the Phils are among the National League leaders in several offensive categories. They lead the league in team batting average (.334), team slugging percentage (.484), team total bases (155), team hits (107), stolen base percentage (80%) and on-base plus slugging percentage (.865), while they are tied for first with the Reds for most RBIs (58). They are second in on-base percentage (.380), doubles (22), runs scored (59), and team extra-base hits (31). They are fourth in total at-bats (320). They also have the third fewest strike outs (56).
As is shown by the stats, although they are not hitting as many home runs (8) as they have in the past, they are still knocking in runs, as they are getting a lot of singles, with enough doubles added, and are using them to move men around the bases to score.
All but one of the regular eight are presently batting over .300, with Shane Victorino leading the team with a .417 batting average, which puts him in fifth place among batting leaders, thanks to his recent hot series against the Braves. Victorino is also batting .611/432, as he is batting 15 for 36 with 8 runs scored and with 8 RBIs. He has four extra-base hits (2 2BS, 1 3B, 1 HR), for 22 total bases, and has stolen 2 bases, being caught once.
Ryan Howard is next with a .361/.639/.390, as he has gone 13 for 36, scoring 7 runs, while knocking in 11 runs, leading the club, as he have has 6 extra-base hits (4 2Bs, 2 HRs), for 23 total bases.
Thanks to his hot series against the Braves, Carlos Ruiz is third with a .346/.538/.414, as he has gone 9 for 26, scoring 6 runs, as he knocked in 7, with 3 extra-base hits (2 2Bs, 1 HR), for 14 total bases.
Fourth among the starting eight is Placido Polanco with a .342/.447/.390, as he has batted 13 for 38, scoring 6 runs, while he had knocked in 8, with a total of 4 extra-base hits, all doubles, for 17 total bases.
Fifth is Wilson Valdez, who is playing second base as Utley recovers from his injury. Valdez has gone .333/.444/.357, hitting 9 for 27, scoring 5 times, while knocking in 5. He has 3 extra-bases hits, all doubles, for 12 total bases. He also has a stolen base.
Jimmy Rollins, in a contract year, is doing well in the third spot in the line-up, although slowing down in the Braves series, being no. six. He is batting .324/.405/.390, going 12 for 37, crossing the plate 6 times, while still waiting for his first RBI. He has 3 extra-base hits, all doubles, for 15 total bases. He has 3 stolen bases, leading the team.
Seventh is Ben Francisco, who is doing rather well as he handle the right field duties. He has gone .306/.528./375, batting 11 for 36, scoring 7 times, while knocking in 7. He has 4 extra-base hits (2 2Bs, 2 HRs), for 19 total bases. He also has a stolen base, and has been caught once.
Raul Ibanez is the last of the eight, as he has also cool down in the Braves series, after being hot against the Mets. He is presently hitting .257/.400/.350, as he has gone 9 for 35, with 9 runs scored, while he has knocked in 6. He has 3 extra-base hits (2 2Bs, 1 HR), for a total of 14 total bases. He has also stolen 1 base.
The rest of the team, including pitchers, have gone a collective 16 for 49, collecting one extra-base hit (1 HR), for 19 total bases. They have scored 5 times, while knocking in 6 RBIs.
Finally, unlike last year, the team has done very effectively pinch hitting, having ten hits, with 5 RBIs, with 4 of them coming on Ruiz’s pinch hit grand-slam home run last saturday afternoon.
If the Phils can continue what they are doing right now, their starting pitching will be even more effective, since the offense will be handing them leads both at home and on the road.

The Braves tied the game up at one-all in the third as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Freddie Freeman hits an RBI single, knocking in Alex Gonzalez, who had earlier doubled. Two batters later, after Brandon Beachy had moved Freeman up to second base with a sacrifice bunt, 1-4, the Braves took the lead as Martin Prado hits a single to right, which Francisco misfielded for an error, allowing Freeman to score, giving the Braves a 2-1 lead. The Phils begin their final road series by pounding the Braves as they defeat Atlanta, 11-5, hurting the Braves chances to reach the playoffs as the NL Wild Card.
The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the first as, with one man on, and with two men out, Derrek Lee hits an RBI double, scoring Jason Heyward, who had earlier walked. The Phils tied the game up at one-all in the fourth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI single, knocking in Ryan Howard, who had earlier singled, then went to second on a Jayson Werth single, while Werth, who had just singled, would stop at second base. The Phils then took the lead as, with two men still on, and now with two men out, Carlos Ruiz hits an RBI single, scoring Weth, to give the Phils a 2-1 lead, while Ibanez would stop at third. The Braves would tie the score up at two-all in the fifth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Lee hits an RBI single, knocking in Brandon Beachy, who had earlier walked, moved up to second on Omar Infante’s sacrifice bunt, then stopped at third on Brian McCann’s single, while McCann, who had just singled, stopped at second base. The Phils regained the lead in the sixth as, with the bases loaded, via a double by Werth, who is then replaced by pinch runner John Mayberry, Jr., an intentional walk to Ibanez and a force attempt throwing error by Braves third baseman Brooks Conrad to second base on a Ruiz grounder, as his throw never got close to second base, allowing Mayberry to reach third, Ibanez to reach second and Ruiz to be safe at first, and with two men out, pinch hitter Dom Brown received a walk, forcing in Mayberry, making it a 3-2 Phils’ lead, while moving both Ibanez and Ruiz up a base. One batter later, with the bases still loaded, Jimmy Rollins broke the game wide open with a grand slam home run, his eighth home run of the year, knocking in Ibanez, Ruiz and Brown, giving the Phils a 7-2 lead. The Phils then added to their lead in the eighth as, with the bases loaded once again, via singles to Greg Dobbs and Ruiz, sending Dobbs on to second base, and a walk to Wilson Valdez, moving up both Dobbs and Ruiz, and with two men out, Ben Francisco hits an RBI single, scoring Dobbs, making it an 8-2 Phils’ lead, while moving both Ruiz and Valdez up a base. Chase Utley then followed with a walk, forcing in Ruiz, giving the Phils a 9-2 lead, while moving Valdez and Francisco up a base. Ryan Howard then followed with a two-run single, scoring both Valdez and Francisco, making it an 11-2 Phils’ lead, while sending Utley up to third base. The Braves tried to rally in the ninth as, with the bases loaded, via singles to Conrad and pinch hitter Freddie Freeman, sending Conrad up to third base, and a walk to J.C. Boscan, moving Freeman up to second base, and with two men out, Lee hits a three-run double, scoring Conrad, Freeman and Boscan, making it an 11-5 Phils’ lead. That would end up being the final score as David Herndon got Matt Diaz to ground out, 6-3, ending the game.

Mike Zagurski pitches two-thirds of an inning, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out one. David Herndon pitches a third of an inning, giving up a walk. Brandon Beachy took the lost as he pitches five and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits and a walk, while striking out five. His record is now 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA. Peter Moylan pitches to two batters, giving up two unearned runs and a walk. The Phils start off the 2010 season in spectacular fashion, as they do something they have not done for some time, win on opening day. Behind the one run, six hits, nine strikeouts pitching performance of their new ace Roy Halladay and powered by an offense that scored eleven runs on thirteen hits, including two home runs, with one of them being a grand-slam home run by a returning Placido Polanco, the 2009 National League Champions crushed the Nationals 11-1.
The Nationals would start the scoring off in the bottom of the first, as, with a man on second, via a lead-off single to Nyjer Morgan, who later stole second, Ryan Zimmerman would hit an RBI double to center, scoring Morgan, giving the Nationals a 1-0 lead. The Phils would come back in the fourth, as they took a 2-1 lead on a two-run home run by Ryan Howard, his first home run of the season, knocking in Chase Utley, who has gotten on base earlier with a lead-off walk. Three batters later, Shane Victorino would make it a 3-1 Phils’ lead as he hit an RBI single, scoring Jayson Werth, who earlier got on base with a single, and then went to third on Raul Ibanez’s single, putting runners on the corners, while sending Ibanez, who has just singled, to second base. One out later, after a fly out to right field by Carlos Ruiz has moved Ibanez up to third and sent Victorino over to second, Phils’ starter, Halladay, helped his own cause by hitting an RBI single off of Nats’ starter, John Lannan, scoring Ibanez from third, while sending Victorino to third, once again putting runners on the corners, with the score now 4-1 Phils. After a walk to Jimmy Rollins loaded up the bases, sending Halladay up to second base, Polanco made it 5-1 Phils by hitting a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Victorino. The Phils would increase their lead in the sixth as, with a runner on first, and with one out, Rollins would hit an RBI triple, scoring Ruiz from first, who had earlier walked, giving the Phils a 6-1 lead. Polanco would make it a 7-1 Phils’ lead with an RBI single, knocking in Rollins. One inning later, in the seventh, the Phils would bust the game wide open as, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Ibanez, a one-out single to Ruiz, which moved Ibanez up to second base, a ground out, 2-3, by Halladay, which would move Ibanez up to third and send Ruiz over to second base, and an intentional walk to Rollins, Polanco would empty the bases with a grand-slam home run, his first home run of the year, making it an 11-1 Phillies’ lead. That would be the final score as Hallady, after keeping the Nationals off of the scoreboard from innings 2-7, hands the ball over to the bullpen, who handled the Nats easily for the final two innings, preserving the win.
Roy Halladay gets the win, as he pitches seven very strong innings, giving up only one earned run on six hits and two walks while striking out nine. His record is now 1-0 with an ERA of 1.29. Antonio Bastardo, Danys Baez and David Herndon combined for two shutout innings, giving up three hits (Bastardo (1), Herndon (2)) and one walk (Bastardo), while striking out two (Bastardo (1), Herndon (1)). John Lannan got the lost for the Nationals, as he went only three and two-third innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks. His record is now 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA. Jesse English pitched one and one-third scoreless innings, giving up no hits. Miguel Batista followed, pitching an inning and two-thirds, getting smoked for five runs on three hits and four walks, while striking out one. Jason Bergmann pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on one hit, the Polanco’s grand-slam. Sean Burnett and Brian Bruney followed with two scorless innings, giving up two hits (one hit apiece) and two walks (both Bruney), while striking out three Phils (Burnett (1), Bruney (2)).
The Phils’ bats went a combine thirteen for thirty-nine today, scoring eleven runs, as well as taking nine bases on balls, with one of them being intentional, and only striking out four times. Placido Planco led the team with three hits, as he knocked in six runs, via a sacrifice fly, a single and a grand-slam home run, starting the season with a .600 batting average. Not bad for a first game. I just hope there’s some left in the tank for Wednesday.
The Phils (1-0) have the day off tomorrow. Their next game will be Wednesday night against the Nationals (0-1) at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. for a 7:05 pm start. The Phils’ starter will be Cole Hamels (0-0, -.–). He will be trying to show that what happened to him in ’09 is now in the past. He will be opposed by Jason Marquis (0-0, -.–), who the Nationals have picked up from the Rockies, who plans on trying to keep the Nats from being an early tennant of the National League Eastern Division cellar. The Phils are off to a good start. The question now is, can they build on it.
