The Phils continue their winning ways, in spite of a short brawl, as they crush the Giants, 9-2.

In spite of a short brawl in the sixth inning, the Phils continue their present winning ways as they crush the World Champs, 9-2.

The Giants took the lead in the first as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Pablo Sandoval hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Jeff Keppinger, who had earlier walked, then went to third on Carlos Beltran’s single, giving the Giants a 1-0 lead. The Phils tied the game up at one-all in the fourth as, with one man out, Shane Victorino hits a solo home run, his eleventh home run of the season. The Phils then took the lead as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI force out, 4-6, as Chase Utley, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Hunter Pence’s single, scored as Pence, who had just singled, is wiped out at second base for the inning’s second out, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, as Ibanez beat out the throw back to first. One batter later, the Phils’ took a 4-1 lead as John Mayberry, Jr. hits a two-run home run, his ninth home run of the season, knocking in Ibanez. The Phils then took a 5-1 lead in the fifth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI single, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier walked, then stole second base, before he is thrown out trying to go to second base to make sure that Rollins did score, 9-2-6, for the inning’s second out. The Giants got a run back in their half of the fifth as Eli Whiteside hits a solo home run, his fourth home run of the year, making it a 5-2 Phils’ lead. The Phils added to their lead in the sixth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Brian Schneider hits an RBI single, scoring Ibanez, who had earlier walked, then stopped at second base on Mayberry’s single, giving the Phils a 6-2 lead, while sending Mayberry, who had just singled, on to second base. Two batters later, after Vance Worley had pop bunt out on an excellent catch near home plate by Whiteside for the inning’s second out, both Schneider and Mayberry moved up a base on Ramon Ramirez’s wild pitch, with Rollins batting. Rollins then gave the Phils an 8-2 lead with an RBI single, scoring both Schneider and Mayberry. After Rollins stole second base, for his second steal of the night, Polanco got on base with an infield single, sending Rollins on to third. The next batter, Victorino, is then hit in the middle of the back by Ramirez, which would lead to both team emptying their benches and their bullpens, and then to a very short brawl, thanks in part to Whitestide tackling Polanco, just as it looked like things were about to cool down. This would lead to Ramirez, Whiteside and Victorino all being thrown out of the game, all now waiting for how hard they will each be punished for their actions. (Personally, I’m hoping that Ramirez and Whiteside will get the worst punishments. I mean: Ramirez, sore loser/man up, dude. Whiteside, this is not the WWF. Victorino, seriously, cool the temper, dude.) The Phils then made it a 9-2 lead in the seventh as Pence hits a lead-off solo home run, his thirteenth home run of the season. That would end up being the final score as David Herndon pitched an easy ninth. 

Vance Worley (8-1, 2.35) gets the win as he pitched seven strong innings, as he ignored the fireworks in the sixth inning, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out six. Michael Stutes and David Herndon combine for two scoreless innings, giving up two hits (one hit each), while striking out a batter (Stutes). Jonathan Sanchez (4-6, 4.10) took the lost as he went four and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out four. Ramon Ramirez pitched an inning, before he is ejected from the game because of his involvement in the brawl, as he gave up three runs on four hits, a walk and a wild pitch. Jeremy Affeldt pitched an inning and a third, giving up a run on a hit, while he struck out one.  Guillermo Mota and Brian Wilson combine for two scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Wilson) and two walks (one walk each), while striking out three (Mota (1), Wilson (2)) between them.

The Phils had thirteen hits in the ballgame, with Placido Polanco (Singles, RBI), Shane Victorino (Single, Home Run, RBI, before his ejection from the ballgame because of his involvement in the brawl), Hunter Pence (Single, Home Run, RBI) and John Mayberry, Jr. (Single, Home Run, 2 RBIs) all leading the team with two hits each. Jimmy Rollins (Single, 2 RBIs), Chase Utley (Single), Raul Ibanez (Double, RBI), Brian Schneider (Single, RBI) and Vance Worley (Single) had the other five Phils’ hits.

The Phils (73-39, 1st East) continue their series with the Giants (62-51, 1st West) with an afternoon game that will be televised on Fox. The game will start at 4:10 pn EDT (1:10 pm PDT). The Phils will start Cole Hamels (12-6, 2.62), who is coming off a no-decision against the Rockies on August 1, as he went six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out five, in the Phils’ 4-3 extra-innings win. He will once again be going for his thirteenth win, while trying to increase the Phils’ winning streak to nine games. The Giants will counter with Matt Cain (9-7, 3.10), who is coming off a lost to the Diamondbacks on August 1, as he went five and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and three walks, while striking out five, in the Giants’ 5-2 lost. He will be trying to stop the presently fast-running Phils. The Phils will be out to beat one of the Giants’ best starters to show who is the best team in the NL.

Another four home runs game, this time in support of rookie Vance Worley, leads the Phils to a 7-2 routing of the World Champions Giants.

Two batters later, after Shane Victorino had walked, Raul Ibanez gave the Phils the lead as he hits a three-run home run, his fourteenth home run of the season, giving the Phils a 4-1 lead. The Phils added to their lead in the fourth as, with two men out, John Mayberry Jr. hits a solo home run, his sixth home run of the year, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead. The Phils then took a 6-1 lead in the sixth as Utley lead-off the inning hitting a hard ball to left center field that hit against the fence, before bouncing away from center fielder Torres, which allowed Utley, who was running all the way, to cross home plate, before the throw, with an iniside-the-park home run, his seventh home run of the season, and the third itp home run of his career. The Giants got a run back in the eighth as, with two men out, pinch hitter Aaron Rowand hits a solo pinch hit home run, his fourth home run of the season, cutting the Phils’ lead down to 6-2. The Phils would get the run back in their half of the eighth as, with two men out, Howard hits a monster shot to center field, his twentieth home run of the year, giving the Phils a 7-2 lead. That would be the final score as Vance Worley would complete his first career complete game by pitching an easy ninth. 

Vance Worley (7-1, 2.02) got the win as he pitched a complete game, giving up just two runs on three hits and a walk, while he struck out five. Barry Zito, who was pitching in place of a sick Tim Lincecum (stomach flu), took the lost (3-3, 5.24), as he went seven inning, giving up six runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out four. Guillermo Mota pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit.

The Phils had seven hits in the ballgame, with Chase Utley (Single, Home Run, RBI), Ryan Howard (Double, Home Run, 2 RBI) and John Mayberry, Jr. (Double, Home Run, RBI) all leading the team with two hits apiece. Raul Ibanez had the other Phil hit, a three-run home run, knocking in three runs.

The Phils (65-37, 1st East) continue their series with the World Champions Giants (59-44, 1st West) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park, and is suppose to start at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (12-5, 2.62), who is coming off a win against the Padres on July 22, as he went eight strong innings, giving up a run on three hits and a walk, while striking out ten, in the Phils’ 3-1 win. He will be going for win number thirteen. The Giants will counter with Matt Cain (8-6, 3.06), who is coming off a lost to the Brewers, as he went six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out two, in the Giants’ 4-2 lost. He will be trying to even up the series for the Giants. The Phils will be going for their tenth straight series win tonight.

The bats are out now. The Phils crush the Giants 8-2.

For the second straight night, the Phils’ bats came out to play, helped along by a big Giant miscue, as the Phils crushed the Giants, 8-2.

The Giants took a quick 1-0 lead in the first as Andres Torres lead-off the game by hitting a 3-2 sinker into the right field seats for his twelfth home run of the season. The Phils tied the game up at on-all in the third as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Chase Utley hits an RBI ground out, 4-3, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier tripled. The Phils then took the lead in the fourth as, with runners on the corners and with one man out, Carlos Ruiz hits an RBI single, knocking in Jayson Werth, who had earlier singled, moved up to second on Shane Victorino’s ground out, 4-3, then went to third on Mike Fontenot’s fielding error of Ross Gload’s grounder, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while sending Gload, who got on base on Fontenot’s fielding error, to second base. Two batters latter, after Joe Blanton had hit into a bunt-force out as Gload is thrown out at third, 1-5, for the inning’s second out, while Ruiz moved up to second base, and Blanton was safe at first on the play, the Phils made it a 5-1 lead as Rollins hit a three-run home run, his fifth home run of the season, scoring both Ruiz and Blanton. The Giants got a run back in the sixth as, with one man out, Pat Burrell hits a solo home run, his fourteenth home run of the year, cutting the Phils’ lead to 5-2. The Phils got the run back in the seventh as, with a runner on second and with two men out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI triple, knocking in Utley, who had just doubled, giving the Phils a 6-2 lead. One batter later, Werth made it a 7-2 Phils’ lead with an RBI double, scoring Ibanez. The Phils then made it an 8-2 lead as, with two men out, Dom Brown hits a pinch hit home run, his second home run of the season. That would be the final score as Jose Contreras would come in and pitch a 1-2-3 ninth.

Joe Blanton gets the win, as he pitches six and one-third innings, giving up two runs on eight hits, while striking out seven. His record is now 5-6 with a 5.54 ERA. Chad Durbin collects his eleventh hold of the year as he pitches two-thirds of an inning, inducing a doubleplay ball to get out of trouble in the seventh. Ryan Madson and Jose Contreras would combine for two 1-2-3 innings, striking out a batter (Madson) between them. Matt Cain took the lost as he pitches six innings, giving up five runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits and a walk, while striking out four. His record is now 9-10 with an ERA of 3.11. Jeremy Affeldt pitches an inning, giving up two runs on three hits. Guillermo Mota pitches an inning, giving up a run on one hit, while striking out a batter.

The Phils had eleven hits in the game, with Jimmy Rollins leading the team with three hits, being a double short of hitting the cycle, as he had a single, a triple and a three-run home run. knocking in three runs. He was followed by Chase Utley, Jayson Werth and Carlos Ruiz, who each had two hits in the game, with Utley and Werth hits being a single and a double, with both men knocking in a run, while Ruiz’s hits were a single and triple, with him also knocking in a run. Raul Ibanez and Dom Brown had the other two Phils’ hits, with Ibanez’s hit being a triple, knocking in a run, while Brown’s hit was a pinch hit home run, the first of his career. The offense pounded the Giants’ starter for the second game in a row.

The Phils (68-51, 2nd NL East) will conclude their three-game series with the Giants (67-54, 2nd NL West) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. In his last three starts, his record is 0-2 with a no-decision, as he pitched twenty-two strong innings, giving up six runs on seventeen hits and two walks, while striking out twenty-nine batters. He hopes that the bats will help him out for a change. He will be opposed by Jonathan Sanchez (8-8, 3.60), who is coming off a lost to the Padres on August 13, as he pitched 5 and a third innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out four, in the Giants’ 3-2 lost. In his last three starts, his record is 1-2, as he pitched fifteen and a third innings, giving up seven runs on thirteen hits and nine walks, while striking out seventeen. He will be trying to be the first Giants winning starter since earlier in the month. The Phils will be out to sweep the Giants, hoping to either add to their lead in the wild card chase, or lower the Braves lead in the East, while giving Hamels some much needed runs support.

National League Divisional Series: Game 4: Four bombs and Joe Blanton’s pitching help get the Phillies into the Championship Series. Bring on the Dodgers!!!!

Four long bombs from Jimmy Rollins, Pat Burrell (2) and Jayson Werth and six strong innings of work from Joe Blanton would help propel the Phillies into the National League Championship Series as they defeated the Brewers, 6-2. On the sixth pitch of the ballgame from Brewers’ starter Jeff Suppan, Jimmy Rollins would help to silence the Brewers’ faithful as he would hit a solo home run, giving the Phillies a quick 1-0 lead. As Joe Blanton would keep the Brewers’ bats silent, the Phillies would increase their lead in the third, when, with runners on first and second, and two men out, Pat Burrell would hit a three-run home run, scoring Shane Victorino, who has earlier doubled, and Ryan Howard, who has been intentionally walked, to give the Phillies a 4-0 lead. One batter later, Jayson Werth would hit a solo shot of his own, making it 5-0 Phillies. That would be the score until the seventh, when Prince Fielder would hit a lead-off solo home run of his own off of Blanton, his only hit in the series, to make it a 5-1 Phillies’ lead. The Phillies would get the run back in the eighth, as, with two outs, Burrell would hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot that would make it 6-1 Phillies. The Brewers would score their second run of the game in their half of the eighth, as, with a runner on third, and two outs, Ryan Braun would hit a RBI single, scoring Mike Cameron, who has earlier singled, moved to second on defensive indifference and would move on to third on Ray Durham’s ground out, 4-3, cutting the Phillies’ lead to 6-2. That would be the final score as Brad Lidge would come in to pitch the ninth in a non-save situation and easily put down the Brewers, getting the final out on a Jason Kendall ground out, 6-3.

Joe Blanton would get the win, as he pitches six strong innings plus two batters, giving up only one earned run on five hits, while striking out seven. His post-season record is 1-0 with an ERA of 1.50. Ryan Madson would pitch two innings, giving up an earned run on two hits. Brad Lidge would pitch a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one. Jeff Suppan would get the lost, as he pitches only three innings, giving up five earned runs on six hits and walking three batters, while striking out three. His post-season record is 0-1 with a 15.00 ERA. Yovani Gollardo would pitch three shut out innings, giving up only one hit, while striking out one. Manny Parra would go one and two-thirds innings, giving up no earned runs on one hit and striking out three. Guillermo Mota would pitch an inning and a third, giving up an earned run on two hits.

With the win, the Phillies have won their first post season series since their defeat of the Atlanta Braves in the 1993 National League Championship Series. Also, this is the first game in the series that the Phils have scored in more than one inning, scoring a run in the first, four more runs in the third and a final run in the eighth. And Joe Blanton would pitch a rather superb game, keeping the Brewers off-balanced in the process, never allowing them to have more than one man on base during his six innings of work, before being relieved after giving up a home run and a single in the seventh. The Phillies will now rest until Thursday, when they will face the Dodgers for the first time in the playoffs since their defeat of LA back in the 1983 National League Championships Series. The Phillies come from behind to defeat the Brewers, 7-3. Are now a game behind in the wild card race and a game and a half behind in the East.

The Phillies come from behind to defeat the slumping Brew Crew, using the eighth inning to their advantage for a change. The Brewers would jump to a quick 2-0 lead as, with a runner on third and one man out, Ray Durham would hit a two-run home run, his sixth home run of the year, knocking in Corey Hart, who has earlier tripled. The Phillies would cut the lead in the fourth, as, with runners on the corners and no one out, Pat Burrell would hit into a 6-4-3 double play, wiping out Ryan Howard at second, who has earlier singled, while scoring Chase Utley, who has earlier doubled and has gone to third on Howard’s single, making it 2-1 Brewers. The Brewers would get the run back in the fifth as Mike Cameron would hit a lead-off home run, his twenty-fifth home run of the year, to make it 3-1 Brewers. The Phillies would tie up the game in the sixth, when, with a runner on first and no one out, Howard would hit a massive two-run home run, his league leading forty-fourth home run of the year, scoring Utley, who has gotten on base earlier after being hit by the pitch. Then the Phillies turned the recently disastrous eighth to their favor for once. After taking out Phillies’ starter Joe Blanton for a pinch hitter in the seventh, Ryan Madson would get out the two batters that he would face via ground outs, both being 6-3 (Hart and J.J. Hardy) before Charlie Manuel would come out to replace him with Scott Eyre. Eyre would end the inning by striking out Durham on a foul tip. Durham would claim that the ball would hit the ground, but Carlos Ruiz, Manuel and Eyre would get home plate umpire Mark Wegner to double check with first base umpire Scott Barry. Barry would say that Ruiz did indeed catch the ball, as would be shown by instant reply on television, thus ending the inning. Then in the Phillies’ half of the eighth, they would break the game open. With Guillermo Mota still on the mound for his second inning of work, Jayson Werth would start off the inning with a single. Ned Yost would then come to the mound and replace Mota with Brian Shouse, who is soon greeted by a surprising sacrifice bunt by Utley, which would move Werth over to second as Utley is thrown out, 1 to 3, for the inning’s first out. Howard is then intentionally walked to get to Burrell, while putting men on first and second with still one out. But Burrell would ruin the Brewers’ strategy by hitting a RBI single, scoring Werth, and giving the Phils a 4-3 lead, while sending Howard to second. After Eric Bruntlett is sent out to first as a pinch runner for Burrell, Shane Victorino would hit a three-run home run, his twelfth home run of the year, scoring both Howard and Bruntlett, making it a 7-3 Phillies’ lead. In the ninth, Eyre would start off the inning by getting Prince Fielder out on a great play by Utley who would throw Fielder out 4-3, for the inning’s first out. Eyre would then be replaced by Brad Lidge, who would then proceed to get Ryan Braun to ground out 4-3 before he gets Cameron to end the game by striking out.

Joe Blanton would get a no-decision as he pitched seven innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits. Ryan Madson would pitch two-thirds of an inning, giving up no runs or hits. Scott Eyre would get the win as he pitches two-thirds of an inning, also giving up no runs or hits. His record is now 4-0 with an ERA 4.43. Brad Lidge would also go two-thirds of an inning, giving up no runs on no hits and striking out one. Dave Bush would also receive a no-decision as he pitches six innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits. Guillermo Mota would get the lost as he pitches an inning plus one batter, giving up an earned run on one hit. His record is now 5-6 with an ERA of 4.10. Brian Shouse would pitch a third of an inning, giving up three earned runs on three hits. Eric Gagne would pitch two-thirds of an inning, giving up no runs or hits.

Joe Blanton would this afternoon performed as originally advertised, pitching deep into a game, although having problems in the first few innings. After giving up a two-run home run in the first, thanks to a floating curveball to Ray Durham, he would calm down enough to get through seven innings, keeping the Phils in the game so that they can first tie up the game and then take the lead in the bottom of the eighth.

The second game of the Day/Night doubleheader is being played right now, with the Phillies leading 6-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, with Brett Myers pitching a two-hitter with the second hiting a solo home run to Prince Fielder while the Phillies have knocked out of the game Brewers’ starter Jeff Suppan in the fourth, heading for both a possible doubleheader sweep and a possible series sweep.

With the win, the Phillies are now trailing the Mets by a game and a half as they lose to the Braves. They are still five games ahead of the Marlins as they defeated the Nationals. In the Wild Card chase, the Phillies are now a game behind the Brewers, as they try to sweep them in the nightcap. They are at the moment a game ahead of the Astros, who are presently losing to the Cubs, while they are four games ahead of the Cardinals as they lose once again to the Pirates. The Phillies will be trying to sweep the Brew Crew in the second game of their doubleheader to tie for the lead in the Wild Card race while placing themselves a game behind the Mets in the East.
