The Cubs took the lead in the first as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Bryan LaHair hits an RBI double, knocking in Starlin Castro, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead. The Phils took the lead in the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via a double by Hunter Pence, a Jim Thome walk, then a force out by Shane Victorino, 4-6, as Thome is wiped out at second base for the inning’s first out, while Pence would move up to third, then Victorino would steal second base, and a Laynce Nix walk, and with one man out, Carlos Ruiz hits a two-run single, knocking in Pence and Victorino, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while sending Nix up to second base. The Phils three batters later took a 4-1 lead as they reloaded the bases via a walk to Joe Blanton, moving up both runners, and now with two men out, Jimmy Rollins hits a two-run double, knocking in Nix and Ruiz, while sending Blanton on to third base. The Phils then took a 5-1 lead in the sixth as Ruiz hits a lead-off home run, his third home run of the year. The Cubs got a run back in the eighth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Castro hits an RBI forced out, 4-6, knocking in pinch hitter Tony Campana, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Blanton’s wild pitch, before stopping at third base on Darwin Barney’s single, as Barney, who had just singled, is wiped out at second base for the inning’s second out. That would end up being the final score as Jonathan Papelbon recorded his seventh save of the season as he threw a 1-2-3 inning, with Reed Johnson ending the game by trying to bunt himself on base which instead became a 1-3 out.

Michael Bowden pitched two and a third innings, giving up a run on two hits, as he struck out three. Shawn Camp and Scott Maine combined for two scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Camp), while striking out three (Camp (1), Maine (2)) between them.

The Phils had only six hits in the ballgame, with Carlos Ruiz (Single, Home Run, 3 RBIs) leading the ballclub with two hits. The Cubs then took a 3-0 lead as Ian Stewart hits an RBI double, scoring LaHair, while sending Soriano over to third base. The Phils would finally get on the scoreboard in the seventh as, with one man out, Ty Wigginton hits a solo home run, his second home run of the year, making it 3-1 Cubs’ lead. The Cubs would get the run back in the ninth as, with a man on first, and with two men out, Reed Johnson hits an RBI triple, knocking in Geovany Soto, who had just walked, giving the Cubs a 4-1 lead. The Cubs then made it a 5-1 lead as David DeJesus hits an RBI triple, scoring Johnson. That would be the final score as Rafael Dolis recorded his first save of the season as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, getting Carlos Ruiz to end the game by lining out to center.

The Phils made it a 7-1 lead in the seventh as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Nix and Brian Schneider, a sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Placido Polanco, 1-4, moving both runners up a base, and a soft fly ball single to left by Juan Pierre, although the Phils’ broadcasters mention that the umpires may have made the wrong call, and with one man out, Orr hits a bases clearing triple, knocking in Nix, Schneider and Pierre. The D-backs tried to come back in their half of the seventh as, with one man on, and with nobody out, pinch hitter Ryan Roberts hits an RBI double, scoring Willie Bloomquist, who had started the inning with a double, cutting the Phils’ lead down to 7-2. Gerardo Parra cut the Phils’ lead down to 7-3 as he followed with an RBI double of his own, scoring Roberts. Two batters later, after Parra had stolen third base, and now with one man out, Justin Upton hits an RBI ground out, scoring Parra, and making it a 7-4 Phils’ lead. The Phils would get a run back in the eighth as Shane Victorino hits a lead-off home run, his fourth home run of the year, giving the Phils an 8-4 lead. The D-backs would get that run back in their half of the eighth as Jason Kubel hits a lead-off home run, his third home run of the year. That would end up being the final score as Jonathan Papelbon nailed down his sixth save of the season as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, getting Aaron Hill to fly out to right for the game’s final out.

Jose Contreras pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up three runs on three hits, while he struck out a batter. Bryan Shaw pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits, while he struck out a batter. Mike Zagurski pitched two innings, giving up a run on a hit, as he also struck out one.

He will be out to give the Phils the series win, and a spilt of the road trip. The D-backs will counter with Trevor Cahill (1-1, 2.84), who is coming off a lost against the Braves on April 20, as he pitched five and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out just two, in the D-backs’ 9-1 lost. He will be out to silent the Phils’ suddenly hot bats. The Phils will be out for a spilt of their road trip, while hoping that the bats will stay hot.

The game would then become a pitchers’ duel between Wieland, who would settle down and allow the Phils to have only two more hits against him, as he struck out seven, as the offense continue to have its problem putting together rallies, and then the Padres’ bullpen, and Phils’ starter Vance Worley, who would pitch an excellent game against the Padres, as he struck out a career-high eleven Padres, while pitching out of a man on third, no outs, jam in the second, and then a first and third, one man out, jam in the fifth, as he struck out Jeremy Hermida, swinging, for the inning’s second out, before Ruiz would throw to second base, trying to catch stealing Chase Headley, who had just singled, who then stopped in front of second base as Rollins catches the ball, trying to start a run down so that Venable, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Cameron Maybin’s sacrifice bunt, 1-3, for the inning’s first out, and then went up to third base on Headley’s single, could head for home during the run down to tie up the ballgame, but, Rollins did not bite, and instead threw home, beating Venable to the plate, as Ruiz put on the tag for the inning’s final out, keeping it a 1-o Phils’ lead, and then, finally, a two on, two out, jam in the seventh, as he struck out pinch hitter Mark Kotsay, looking. The Phils finally added an insurance run in the ninth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Pence, who had earlier walked, then stopped at third base on Victorino’s single to left, as he was running on the pitch, would score on catcher John Baker’s passed ball, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead, while sending Victorino, who had earlier stole second base, on to third. That would be the final score as Jonathan Papelbon recorded his fourth save of the season as he threw a scoreless bottom of the ninth, striking out Jason Bartlett, looking, for the game’s final out.

Luke Gregerson and Andrew Cashner combined for two 1-2-3 innings, striking out a batter (Gregorson) between them. Ernesto Frieri pitched an inning, giving up ann unearned run on a hit, a walk and a passed ball, as he struck out two.

The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (1-1, 3.65), who is coming off a win against the Mets on April 15, as he pitched seven strong innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out ten, in the Phils’ 8-2 win. He will be going for his second straight win, while trying to give the Phils another pitching gem on this road trip, while hoping that the offense will final get out of its current scoring funk. The Padres will counter with Edinson Volquez (0-1, 4.24), who is coming off a no-decision against the Dodgers on April 15, as he threw five innings, giving up four runs on six hits and five walks, as he struck out only two, in the Padres’ 5-4 lost. He is still looking for his first win, as he hope he can take advantage of the Phils’ present batting troubles. The Phils will be out for their thirteen straight win at Petco Park, after last night setting the club record for the most wins at an opposing ballpark.

The game then became a pitchers’ duel for the next four and one-third innings, as Phils’ starter Cole Hamels gave up only four more hits and a walk, while striking out ten Mets, putting up a strong performance, while Mets’ starter Mike Pelfrey threw six strong innings of his own, as he refused to give the Phils the key hit that they’d been looking for, as he gave up eight total hits and two walks, while striking out just two Phils. The Phils tied the game up at two-all in the seventh as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Ty Wigginton hits a sacrifice fly deep to right, knocking in Rollins, who had earlier singled, stopped at second base on Hunter Pence’s single, then moved up to third on Ramon Ramirez’s wild pitch, while sending Pence, who had earlier singled, then stopped at second base on Ramirez’s wild pitch, up to third base. The Phils then took the lead one batter later as Laynce Nix hits an RBI double, his first hit of the season, knocking in Pence, giving the Phils a 3-2 lead. Manny Acosta pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up four unearned runs on one hit and two walks, while striking out a batter. Miguel Batista pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on two hits.
