The Phils lose the only game in a series shortened by the approach of Hurricane Irene, as they are unable to overcome Roy Oswalt’s refusal to use his fastball, as they lose to the Marlins, 6-5.
The Marlins took the lead in the first as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Logan Morrison hits into a 6-3 doubleplay, scoring Emilio Bonifacio, who had ealier singled, stole second base, then was safe at third on a fielder’s choice throwing error by shortstop Wilson Valdez on an Omar Infante grounder, when he tried to throw the ball to third baseman Placido Polanco for a force out, but failed, as the ball hit Bonifacio, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead, while Infante, who had been safe at first on the fielder’s choice grounder error, was wiped out at second base for the inning’s first out. The Phils tied the game up at one-all in the third as Valdez hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the season. The Marlins retook the lead in the fourth as, with a runner on second, and with nobody out, Greg Dobbs hits an RBI double, scoring Mike Stanton, who had started the inning off with a double, giving the Marlins a 2-1 lead. The Marlins then took a commanding lead in the sixth as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Dobbs, Gaby Sanchez and Mike Cameron, thanks in part to Phils’ starter Roy Oswalt’s sudden refusal to throw his fastball and relying a lot on his off-speed pitches, and with nobody out, John Buck hits a grand-slam home run, his sixteenth home run of the year, scoring Dobbs, Sanchez and Cameron, giving the Marlins a 6-1 lead. The Phils then cut the Marlins’ lead down to 6-4 as, with two men on, and with two men out, Ryan Howard hits a three-run home run, his twenty-seventh home run of the season, knocking in Polanco, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Chase Utley’s double, and Utley, who had just doubled. The Phils then cut the Marlins’ lead down to 6-5 in the ninth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Michael Martinez hit an RBI double, knocking in pinch runner Cliff Lee, who was running for pinch hitter Raul Ibanez, who had earlier hit a pinch hit single. But that would end up being the final score as Steve Cishek recorded his third save of the season by getting out the last two batters, with Polanco grounding out, 6-3, for the game’s final out.
Roy Oswalt (6-8, 3.77) took the lost as he went five and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs, five of which were earned, on twelve hits and a walk, while striking out two. David Herndon, Michael Stutes and Ryan Madson combined for three and one-thirds scoreless innings, giving up just two hits (Herndon (1), Stutes (1)), while striking out five (Herndon (2), Stutes (3)) batters between them. Clay Hensley (2-5, 5.40) gets the win as he went five and two-thirds innings, as he gave up three runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out a batter. Michael Dunn pitched to a batter, being unable to get him out, as he gave up a run on a hit. Ryan Webb received his seventh hold of the season as he pitched an inning and a third, giving up two hits. Edward Mujica converted his fifteenth hold of the year as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out two. Steve Cishek recorded his third save of the year as he pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits, striking out a batter.
The Phils had nine hits in the ballgame, with Hunter Pence leading the team with two hits, both singles. Placido Polanco (Single), Chase Utley (Double), Ryan Howard (Home Run, 3 RBIs), John Mayberry, Jr. (Double), Wilson Valdez (Home Run, RBI), Michael Martinez (Double, RBI) and pinch hitter Raul Ibanez (Single), had the other seven Phils’ hits.
The Phils (83-46, 1st East) will be off for the next two days, thanks to both games being called because of the approach of Hurricane Irene. Their next game is suppose to be on Monday night against the Cincinnati Reds.
