The Phils’ bullpen fail to do its job as the Phils lose to the Nats, 7-5.

For the first time this season the Phils’ bullpen fail to do its job as it gives up six runs in the last three innings as the Nats avoid being swept as they defeat the Phils’ 7-5.

The Phils took the lead in the first as, with two men out, Chase Utley hits a solo home run, his fifth home run of the season, and his fourth in the series, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Nats would tie it up at one-all in the third as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Cristian Guzman would hit into an RBI ground out, 6-3, scoring Nyjer Morgan, who had earlier walked, was caught stealing second but reached base on Ryan Howard’s throwing error, then moved up to third on Ian Desmond’s sacrifice bunt, 1-3. The Phils retook the lead in the sixth as, with the bases loaded, via a single to Placido Polanco, and walks to Jayson Werth, which moved Polanco up to second base and Raul Ibanez, which moved Polanco to third and Werth up to second base, and with two men out, Juan Castro hits a two-run single, knocking in both Polanco and Werth, making it a 3-1 Phils’ lead, while sending Ibanez to third, before Castro would move up to second on the throw. After Carlos Ruiz is intentionally walked to reload the bases, the Phils make it 4-1 as pinch hitter Greg Dobbs takes a walk, forcing in Ibanez, while Castro and Ruiz both moved up a base. The Nats cut the Phils lead to 4-2 in the seventh as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Desmond hits an RBI single, scoring Alberto Gonazlez, who had earlier singled, then went to second on Willie Harris’ ground out, 3-unassisted. In the eighth, the Nats made it a 4-3 Phils’ lead as Adam Dunn hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the season. Three batters later, with a runner on first, and with one man out, the Nats’ took the lead as pinch hitter Ryan Zimmerman hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the year, knocking in Ivan Rodriguez, who had earlier walked, to make it 5-4 Nats. In the ninth, the Nats added to their lead as, with two men on, and with two outs, Rodriguez hits a two-run single, knocking in Desmond, who had earlier singled, stole second base, and then went to third on Dunn’s ground out, 3-unassisted, and Wily Taveras, who was pinch running for Josh Willingham, who had earlier walked, and then stole second, giving the Nats a 7-4 lead. The Phils made it a 7-5 game in the ninth as Shane Victorino hits a lead-off home run, his third home run of the season. But, that would be the final score as Matt Capps would record his fourth save of the season as he gets Werth to fly out to center with a runner on second to end the game.

J.A. Happ would receive a no-decision as he pitches five and a third innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and a walk. Jose Contreras pitches two-thirds of an inning, striking out both men that he would face. Antonio Bastardo would record his second hold of the season as he pitches an inning, giving up a run on two hits. Danys Baez blows his first save of the season before taking the lost, as he gives up three runs on two hits and two walks, while striking out two, in one inning of work. His record is now 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA. Ryan Madson pitches an inning, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk, while striking out two. Tyler Clippard receives the win as he pitches an inning and a third, giving up no runs on one hit and two walks, while he strikes out one. His record is now 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA. Sean Burnett records his second hold of the season as he pitches a third of an inning, getting out the only man that he would face. Matt Capps records his fourth save of the year as he pitches an inning and two-thirds, giving up a run on three hits, as he strikes out a batter.

The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Juan Castro leading the team with three hits, all singles, as he knocks in two runs, as he raises his batting average to .333. Placido Polanco follows with two hits, also singles, as he knocks in a run, while lifting his average to .475. Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz had the other four Phils’ hits, with Victorino and Utley’s hits being solo hime runs, while Howard and Ruiz’s hits were doubles. Greg Dobbs got the Phils’ other RBI with a bases loaded walk.

The Phils (7-2, 1st) continue their home stand with a three-games set against the Florida Marlins (6-4, 2nd). The game will be played tonight at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phils will send to the mound their ace Roy Halladay (2-0, 0.56), who is coming off a complete game win against the Astros on April 11, as he gave up an unearned run on seven hits, as he struck out eight, in the Phils’ 2-1 win. He will be trying to get his third win of the year in his first start before the home fans. The Marlins plan to send Anibal Sanchez (0-0, 6.00), who is coming off a no-decision against the Dodgers on April 11, as he pitched six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out five, in the Marlins’ 6-5 win. He will try to keep the Marlins in the game by hoping to shut down the Phils’ offense.

The Phils’ bats continue to stay hot as they crush the Nats, 14-7, for their best start since the 1993 season.

The Phils overcome a lackluster start by Kyle Kendrick to crush the Nationals, 14-7, putting up their best start since their pennant winning season of 1993, when they started off the season with an 8-1 record.

The Nats took a 3-0 lead in the first as, with the bases loaded, thanks to a Cristian Guzman single and walks to Adam Dunn, which sent Guzman over to second base, and to Josh Willingham, which sent Guzman to third and moved Dunn up to second base, and with two men out, Adam Kennedy hits a bases clearing double, scoring Guzman, Dunn and Willingham. The Phils would strike back in their half of the first as, with the bases loaded, via singles to Shane Victorino and Placido Polanco, which moved Victorino up to second base, and a walk to Chase Utley, which sent Victorino to third base, and moved Polanco up to second base, with no one out, Ryan Howard hits a two-run single, knocking in both Victorino and Polanco, making it a 3-2 Nat’s lead, while sending Utley to third base. The Phils then tied the game up at three-all as Greg Dobbs hits an RBI double, scoring Utley, while sending Howard to third, with still nobody out. The Phils then took a 4-3 lead as Raul Ibanez hits a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Howard. The Nats regain the lead in the second as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Guzman hits a two-run single, knocking in Alberto Gonzalez, who had earlier doubled and had gone to third on a Nyjer Morgan single, and Morgan, who had earlier singled, and later stole second base, giving the Nats a 6-4 lead. The Phils would retake the lead in their half of the second as, with two men on, and with one man out, Utley hits a three-run home run, his third home run of the season, knocking in Nelson Figueroa, who had earlier singled, and had gone to third on Polanco’s double, and Polanco, who had just doubled, giving the Phils a 7-6 lead. The Nats would come back to tie it up at seven-all in the third as, with two men on base, and with one man out, Morgan would hit into an RBI ground out, 3-unassisted, as Ivan Rodriguez, who had earlier singled, stole second, and then went to third on Gonzalez’s singled, scored, while Gonzalez, who had earlier singled, and then went to second on Jesse English’s sacrifice bunt, went to third. It would remain 7-7 until the bottom of the fifth when the Phils took the lead for good as, with one man on, and with two outs, Victorino hits a two-run home run, his second home run of the year, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier walked, to give the Phils a 9-7 lead. The Phils would add to their lead in the sixth as Utley hits a lead-off home run, his fourth home run of the season, and his second of the game, making it a 10-7 Phils’ lead. The Phils would then break it wide open in the seventh as, with the bases loaded via walks to Juan Castro, Ruiz, with Castro moving up to second on Ruiz’s walk, and to pinch hitter Jayson Werth, moving both Castro and Ruiz up a base, and with nobody out, Victorino hits a bases clearing triple, knocking in Castro, Ruiz and Werth, giving the Phils a 13-7 lead. One batter later, Polanco would bring Victorino in with a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Phils a 14-7 lead. That would be the final score as David Herndon would come in and pitch a 1-2-3 ninth.

Kyle Kendrick receives a no-decision as he pitches only an inning and two-thirds, giving up six runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out only one. Nelson Figueroa would get the win as he goes three and a third innings, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, while striking out two. His record is now 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA. Chad Durbin records his fourth hold of the year as he pitches two scoreless innings, as he gives up just two hits, while striking out one. Antonio Bastardo and David Herndon combines for two scoreless innings, giving up just two walks (Bastardo) and striking out one (Bastardo). The Phils had fourteen hits in the game, with Shane Victorino leading the way with four hits, two singles, a triple and a home run, being a double short of hitting the cycle, knocking in five runs, while scoring three. Placido Polanco, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Nelson Figueroa all followed with two hits each, with Polanco’s hits being a single and a double, knocking in a run while scoring two, with Utley’s hits being two home runs, knocking in four runs as he scored three, Howard’s two hits being singles, knocking in two runs as he scored once, while Figueroa’s hits were a single and a double, scoring a run. Greg Dobbs, Raul Ibanez and Carlos Ruiz got the other three Phils’ hit, with Dobbs’ hit being a double, plating one run, with Ibanez’s hit being a single, as he knocked in a run, while Ruiz’s hit was a double, as he scores two runs.

The Phils (7-1, 1st) concludes their three-games series with the Nats in a game already in progress. The Phils’ starter is J.A. Happ (1-0, 0.00) while the Nats counter with Scott Olsen (0-0, -.–). The game is presently a 1-1 tie, with the Phils batting in the bottom of the fifth.

Happ’s pitching and the Phils’ offense defeat the hapless Astros as the Phils win, 8-0.

Behind the pitching of J.A. Happ and the bullpen, and the relentless bats of the Phils’ offense, the Phils defeat the presently winless Astros, 8-0. The Phils, with their victory, and with losses by both the Braves and the Marlins, took sole possession of 1st place in the NL East.

The Phils took a quick 1-0 lead in the first as, with runners on first and second, and with one man out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI double, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who has earlier walked, moves up to second on Placido Polanco’s single, and then went to third on a Chase Utley fly out, while sending Polanco, who had earlier singled, over to third base. Two batters later, with runners still on second and third, and now with two outs, Raul Ibanez joins the Phils’ hitting parade with a two-run double, scoring both Polanco and Howard, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. After being kept from scoring on bases loaded opportunties in both the second and the third innings, the Phils added to their lead in the fourth when, with one man out, Utley hits a solo home run, his first home run of the season, to make it a 4-0 Phils’ lead. Three batters later, with a runner on second, and now with two men outs, Ibanez hits an RBI double, knocking in Howard, who has earlier doubled, making it 5-0 Phils. The Phils continued their scoring in the fifth as, with a runner on second, and once again with two men out, Polanco hits an RBI double, scoring Rollins, who has just doubled, giving the Phils a 6-0 lead. One batter later, the Phils increased their lead to 7-0 as Utley hits an RBI single, knocking in Polanco. As the Phils were scoring, their starter, J.A. Happ, continues where he left off from his rookie season, as he blanks the Astros in six innings, pitching out of trouble, as he gives up only six hits and two walks, while striking out five Astros, followed by the bullpen which pitches four shut out innings, while striking out five more Astros. The Phils add their last run in the seventh as, with runners on first and second, and with one man out, Polanco hits an RBI single, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who has earlier singled, and has gone to second on a walk to Rollins, while sending Rollins to third, while he would move up to second on the throw, giving the Phils an 8-0 lead. That would be the final score as Jose Contreras pitches a 1-2-3 ninth.

J.A. Happ gets the win as he pitches six strong shut out innings, plus two batters, giving up just six hits and two walks, while he strikes out five. His record is now 1-0 with an 0.00 ERA. David Herndon, Danys Baez and Jose Contreras combine for four shut out innings, giving up just two hits (Herndon), while striking out five (Herndon (2), Baez (1), Contreras (2)). Carlos Ruiz had one hit, a single, scoring a run. The Phils’ offense had seven extra-base hits (2B (6), HR (1)) in the ballgame. The Phils’ offense had ten hits or more in their first four games, doing so for the first time since 1926.

The Phillies (3-1, 1st NL East), will continue their road trip to Houston with a night game against the Astros (0-4, 6th NL Central). The game will be played at Minute Maid Park and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern (6:05 pm Central). The ageless wonder Jamie Moyer (0-0, -.–) will start the game for the Phils, hoping to continue from spring training. Felipe Paulino (0-0, -.–) will start for the Astros, trying to put a stop to the Astros four game slide. The Phils will try to win their second straight series of the season with a win tonight.

A bad performance by Kyle Kendrick helps lead to the Phils losing their first game of the season as they lose to the Nats, 6-5.

The Phils are unable to overcome a bad start by Kyle Kendrick as they fall to the Nationals, 6-5, thus being unable to complete the sweep of their Eastern Division rival.

The Nationals took an early lead in the first as, with a runner on third and with nobody out, Cristian Guzman hits an RBI single, scoring Nyjer Morgan, who had earlier tripled, giving the Nats a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, the Nats made it 2-0 as, with runners on second and third, and still with nobody out, Adam Dunn hits an RBI ground out, 3-unassisted, scoring Guzman, who has earlier went to third on Ryan Zimmerman’s double, while Zimmerman would move up to third on the ground out. The Nats then made it 3-0 as, now with one out, and a runner on third, Josh Willingham hits a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Zimmerman. The Phils got a run back in the second as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Shane Victorino hits into an RBI ground out, 4-3, scoring Jayson Werth, who had lead-off the inning with a double and then went to third on a Raul Ibanez ground out, also 4-3, cutting the Nats’ lead to 3-1. The Phils would make it 3-2 Nats in the third as, with runners on second and third, and with one out, Chase Utley hits into an RBI ground out, 3-unassisted, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who has earlier singled, and then went to third on Placido Polanco’s double, while Polanco, who had just doubled, moved up to third. The Nats would increase their lead in the fourth as, with a runner on first, and with one out, Willie Harris would hit a two-run home run, his first home run of the season, scoring Dunn, who had earlier singled, giving the Nats a 5-2 lead. The Phils made it 5-3 in the fifith as, with a runner on first, and with one man out, Polanco hits a single into center field, which is misplaced by Morgan for a fielding error, allowing pinch hitter Ross Gload, who has earlier singled, to score, and allowing Polanco to go all the way to third on the two-base error. Two batters later, with Polanco still on third, and with two men out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI single, scoring Polanco, making it a 5-4 Nats’ lead. The Phils would tie the game up at five-all in the sixth as, with the bases loaded, via consecutive walks to Ibanez and Victorino, with Ibanez moving up to second on Victorino’s walk, a sacrifice bunt by Brian Schneider, which moved Ibanez to third and sent Victorino on to second, and pinch hitter Ben Francisco being hit by the pitch, and with only one man out, Rollins would hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Ibanez from third with the tying run, while sending Victorino on to third base. The Nationals would take the lead for good in the seventh as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Zimmerman hits an RBI double, knocking in pinch hitter Alberto Gonzalez, who had earlier walked, moved up to second on Morgan’s sacrifice bunt, 1-3, and then moved up to third base on Guzman’s ground out, 3-1, giving the Nats a 6-5 lead. That would be the final score as the Nats would turn back Phils’ rallies in both the eighth and the ninth, with Matt Capps recording his first save of the year as he got Victorino to pop up to Guzman with the tying run on third to end the game.

Kyle Kendrick had a bad start as he received a no-decision as he pitches only four innings, giving up five runs on six hits, while he strikes out two. Jose Contreras pitches a scoreless inning, giving up only one hit. Nelson Figueroa, whom the Phils had just picked off the waivers wire from the New York Mets, takes the lost as he pitches two innings, giving up a run on one hit and three walks. His record is now 0-1 with an ERA of 4.50. Antonio Bastardo pitches two-thirds of an inning, getting out both batters that he would face, including one by strikeout. David Herndon pitches a third of an inning, giving up a hit. Craig Stammen also receives a no-decision as he went five innings, giving up four runs on nine hits, as he strikes out one. Sean Burnett records his first hold of the season as he pitches a third of an inning, giving up a run on two walks. Tyler Clippard blew his first save of the season before getting the win as he pitches an inning and two-thirds, giving up a hit while striking out a batter. His record is now 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. Brian Bruney records his first hold of the season as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk. Matt Capps records his first save as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up only a hit and a walk.

The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Jayson Werth leading the team with three hits, all doubles, as he raised his average up to .308. Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard each followed with two hits apiece, with Rollins, Polanco and Utley each recording a single and a double, while Howard had two singles. Ross Gload had the Phils other hit, a pinch hit single, the team’s first pinch hit of the year. Shane Victorino, Utley, Howard and Rollins each knocked in a run, with Victorino’s RBI coming on a ground out, and Rollins’ on a sacrifice fly, while the Phils’ other run came in on an error on Polanco’s single in the fifth.

The Phils (2-1, tied-1st place NL East) continue their road trip with a visit to Houston where they will face the Astros (0-3, 6th NL Central). The game will be played at Minute Maid Park and will begin at (7:05 pm Central (8:05 pm Eastern)). The Phils will send to the mound NL Rookie of the Year candidate J.A. Happ (0-0, -.–), who will be trying to prove that last year was no fluke. He will be opposed by Bud Norris (0-0, -.–), who will be trying to end the Astros’ three-game losing streak. The Phils will be coming to Houston trying to reverse their recent bad luck while facing the presently bad Astros.

Spring Training is almost over…

With yesterday’s announcement of Jamie Moyer as the Phils’ fifth starter, it seems the time is complete, until both Brad Lidge and J.C. Romero comes off of the disable list later in April.

Right now, this will most likely be the Phillies team that will be facing the Nationals next week in D.C.

1. Jimmy Rollins – SS

2. Placido Polanco – 3B

3. Chase Utley – 2B

4. Ryan Howard – 1B

6. Raul Ibanez – LF

7. Shane Victorino – CF

8. Carlos Ruiz – C

Bench:

Brian Schneider – C

Juan Castro, INF

Greg Dobbs – INF

Ben Francisco – OF

Ross Gload – OF

Pitchers:

Starters –

1. Roy Halladay

2. Cole Hamels

3. Joe Blanton

4. J.A. Happ

5. Jamie Moyer

Relief Corp –

Kyle Kendrick

Chad Durbin

David Herndon

Jose Contreras

Antonio Bastardo (left handed specialist until Romero gets back)

Danny Baez

Ryan Madson (closer until Lidge gets back)

J.C. Romero (On disable list, left handed specialist)

Brad Lidge (On disable list until either the second or third series of the season, closer)

Things are definitely going to become real interesting in the bullpen this year, even with the return of Romero and Lidge. But, if the starters all do their jobs, and the offense keeps scoring, as it has done in the past, that’ll become a big non-issue real quick.

I can’t wait to see what this team does during the next several months.

GO PHILS!!!!!

Two to go as Blanton signs a three-year $24 Million extension

The Phils can now concentrate on signing to new contracts Carlos Ruiz and Shane Victorino as they have just signed Joe Blanton to a three-year contract extension worth $24 million dollars. Blanton, who went 12-8 with a 4.05 ERA in 31 starts in 2009, will be paid $7 million in 2010, and $8.5 million in both 2011 and 2012.

With Blanton’s contract signing, the Phils starting four is now set up to 2012, unless one of them is traded. Roy Halladay is the number one starter, Cole Hamels no. 2, and Joe Blanton and J.A. Happ as either the no. 3 or 4 man, depends on how they do during the season(s). With Jamie Moyer coming off of post-season surgery, the no. 5 position for the present season presently being up in the air, to be settled during spring training.

Okay, Ruben, time to sign up Ruiz and Victornio.

Repeat!!!! The Phils’ bats buried the Dodgers as the Phils win game five of the NLCS, 10-4, to return to the World Series to defend their championship.

Four home runs, with two of them by Jayson Werth, help rocket the Phils past the Dodgers, 10-4, to win the 2009 National League Championship Series, 4 games to 1, to become the first National League squad, since the 1995-96 Atlanta Braves, to win back-to-back National League pennants. The Phillies will now try to become the first NL team, since the Big Red Machine of Cincinnati, to win back-to-back World Series (1975-76).

The Dodgers took the early lead in the first as, with two men out, Andre Ethier hits a solo home run, his first home run iof the series, to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. The Phils then struck back in their half of the first as, with two men on base, and with two men out, Jayson Werth hits a three-run bomb into the right field seats, his second home run of the series, knocking in Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, who had both been walked, to give the Phils a 3-1 lead. The Dodgers got a run back in the second as James Loney hits a lead-off home run, his second home run of the series, cutting the Phils’ lead to 3-2. The Phillies would get that run back in their half of the second as Pedro Feliz hits the first pitch into right field for a solo home run of his own, his first of both the series and of the post-season, to give the Phils a 4-2 lead. The Phillies then increased their lead in the fourth as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI double, knocking in Werth, who had just singled, giving the Phils a 5-2 lead. Five batters later, with the bases loaded, thanks to a Carlos Ruiz walk, then Phils’ starter Cole Hamels moving both Ibanez and Ruiz up a base with a sacrifice bunt, and Jimmy Rollins then being hit by the pitch, and with two men out, Shane Victorino brought in another run as he in turn was hit by the pitch, forcing in Ibanez, making it a 6-2 Phils’ lead, as both Ruiz and Rollins moved up a base. The Dodgers got a run back in the fifth as, with one man out, pinch hitter Orlando Hudson hits a pinch hit solo home run, his first of the series, cutting the Phils’ lead down to 6-3. The Phils then added to their lead in the sixth as, with a runner on base, and with two men out, Victorino hits a two-run shot into left field, his second home run of the series, knocking in Rollins, who had earlier been hit by the pitch for the second straight time, to make it an 8-3 Phils’ lead. The Phils increased their lead in the seventh as, with one man out, Werth hits a solo home run, his second home run of the game, his third home run of the series and his fifth of the post-season, to give the Phils a 9-3 lead. The Dodgers then made one last attempt in the eighth as, with the bases loaded, via singles to Ronnie Belliard and Ethier, who sent Belliard to third with his single, and a walk to Manny Ramirez, and with nobody out, Matt Kemp hits an RBI single, scoring Belliard, and moving both Either and Ramirez up a base, making it a 9-4 Phils’ lead, with the bases still loaded. But the Phils then got out of the inning, as Ryan Madson then got Loney to foul out to the third baseman, then struck out Russell Martin, swinging, then got Casey Blake to hit into a force out, 6-4, wiping out Kemp at second. The Phils then got that run back in their half of the eighth as, with runners on second and third, thanks to a single by Rollins and a ground-rule double, thanks to Fan Interference, by Victorino, and with two men out, with Utley batting, Rollins would score on a wild pitch by Dodgers’ reliever Ronald Belisario, giving the Phils a 10-4 lead, while sending Victorino over to third. The Phils then send out Brad Lidge to end the game. He first struck out pinch hitter Mark Loretta swinging for the first out. He then got Rafael Furcal to foul out to the catcher for the second out. He then got Belliard to fly out to center to end the game, and give the Phils their second straight NL pennant, and the seventh NL pennant in the francishe’s long history.

Cole Hamels received a no-decision as he lasted only four and a third innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out three. J.A. Happ pitched a third of an inning, giving up a walk. Chad Durbin got the win as he pitched one and a third scoreless innings, as he struck out a batter. His series record is now 1-0 with an 0.00 ERA. The Phillies (4-1) now wait to find out who their American League opponent will be in the 2009 World Series, as the 2009 ALCS between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim continues tonight in Anaheim.

A pair of three-run bombs help propel the Phils past the Dodgers, 8-6, to take a 1-0 lead in the 2009 NLCS.

Two three-run home runs by Carlos Ruiz and Raul Ibanez and a two-run double by Ryan Howard help lead the Phils to an 8-6 victory in the first game of the 2009 National League Championship Series. The Phils lead the seven-games series with the Dodgers, 1-0.

The Dodgers struck first in the bottom of the second as James Loney hits a solo home run, his first in the series, over the right field fence to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. The game then developed into a pitchers’ duel for the first four innings between Phils’ starter Cole Hamels and Dodgers’ starter Clayton Kershaw. During those four innings, Kershaw had the Phils’ bats quieted, giving up only one hit and two walks, while striking out two batters. Meanwhile, Hamels, besides Loney’s home run, gave up three hits and a walk, pitching himself out of a two on, two out jam in the first inning, while striking out three Dodgers. The Phils then struck in the fifth as, with two men on, via a single to Raul Ibanez, who then moved up to second on a wild pitch, and then a walk to Pedro Feliz, and with nobody out, Carlos Ruiz hits a three-run shot to left, his first home run of the series, scoring both Ibanez and Feliz, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. Five batters later, with two men on, and with two men out, Ryan Howard hits a two-run double, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who got on base on a force out, wiping out Hamels at second, who had earlier walked, then moved up to second on a wild pitch as Shane Victorino struck out, swinging, and then moved to third on the third wild pitch in the inning, and Chase Utley, who had just walked, to give the Phils a 5-1 lead. The Dodgers then came back in their half of the inning as, with runners on the corners, and with one out, Andre Ethier hits into a force out, 6-4, knocking in Russell Martin, who had earlier hit a ground-rule double, and then went to third on Rafael Furcal’s single, making it a 5-2 Phils’ lead, as Furcal, who had just singled, was forced out at second base, before Ethier would move up to second as Utley’s throw to first went into the Phils’ dugout. The next batter, Manny Ramirez, then made it a 5-4 Phils’ lead, as he hits a two-run home run into left center field, his first home run of the series, scoring Ethier. The Dodgers would threathen to score in the sixth, as they loaded up the bases on singles by Loney and Ronnie Belliard and a walk to pinch hitter Jim Thome, who was then pinch run for by Randy Wolf, with two men out. But, J.A. Happ, who was pitching in relief of Chad Durbin, who had earlier come in in relief of Hamels, ended the inning by getting Furcal to ground out, 4-3. The Dodgers then threathen again in the seventh as Ethier lead off the inning with a double. But, Chan Ho Park, pitching in relief of Antonio Bastardo, turned back the Dodgers by getting Ramirez to ground out, 5-3, then struck out Matt Kemp, swinging, before ending the inning by getting Casey Blake to also ground out, 4-3. The Phils then increased their lead in the eighth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Ibanez hits a three-run bomb to right, knocking in Howard and Jayson Werth, who had both walked, giving the Phils an 8-4 lead. The Dodgers then tried to come back in their half of the eighth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Martin hits an RBI single, knocking in Loney, who had earlier singled, and then moved up to second on Belliard’s single, cutting the Phils’ lead to 8-5, while sending Belliard, who had just singled, over to second. Two batters later, after pinch hitter Juan Pierre hits into a force out, 1-4, as a low throw to second from reliever Ryan Madson killed a possible double play attempt, wiping out Martin at second, while Belliard moved up to third, Furcal hits a sacrifice fly for the inning’s second out, knocking in Belliard, to make it an 8-6 Phils’ lead. Madson would then get out of the inning by getting Ramirez to ground out 5-3, with runners on first and third. Brad Lidge was then given the ball in the ninth to save it. Lidge was greeted with a lead-off single by Kemp. But, he then got Blake to hit into a 4-6-3 double play, wiping out Kemp at second base, for outs number one and two. Loney then worked a walk, after falling behind 0-2, to keep the game alive. After Loney took second on defensive indifference, Lidge finally recorded the save, his first for the series, by getting Belliard to pop up to Rollins for the final out.

Cole Hamels got the win, as he pitched five and one-third innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out four. His record in the series is now 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA. Chad Durbin picked up his first hold of the series as he pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only man that he would face. J.A. Happ also picked up his first series hold as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up a walk. Antonio Bastardo pitched to one batter, giving up a hit. Clayton Kershaw took the lost as he went just four and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on four hits, five walks and three wild pitches, while he struck out three. His series record is now 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA. Ramon Troncoso pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only batter he would face. Ronald Belisario and Hong-Chih Kuo combined for two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit (Kuo), while striking out two (Kuo). George Sherrill pitched an inning, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks. Jonathan Broxton pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while he struck out a batter.

The Phils had only eight hits in the game, making the most of them, along with the seven walks that they received. Shane Victorino, Raul Ibanez and Carlos Ruiz led the team with two hits apiece, with both Ibanez and Ruiz each hitting a three-run home run. Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard had the other two Phils’ hits, with Howard’s hit being a two-run double. The Phils did very well with runners in scoring position as they went 3 for 5.

This will be his first start of the 2009 post-season, as he hope to give the Phils a chance to take a 2-0 lead back to Philadelphia. The Dodgers will counter with Vicente Padilla (12-6 (4-0), 4.46 (3.20)), who is coming off a win against the Rockies on October 4, as he pitched five innings, giving up just a run on four hits, as he struck out ten, in the Dodgers’ 5-3 win. He will be trying to even up the series before the two teams head for Philadelphia. The Phillies hope to continue their road success before they head back home to continue the series with home field advantage.

Phils fight cold night, Rockies, to win game three of the NLDS, 6-5, to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

The Phils braved both the cold Denver night and the pesky Rockies to win the third game of the NL Divisional Series, 6-5, to take a two games to one lead.

The Phils took the lead in the first as, with two men out, Chase Utley hits a solo home run, his first home run of the post-season, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. Three batters later, with two men on base, and now with two men out, Garrett Atkins hits an RBI single, scoring Helton, who had earlier moved up to second on Troy Tulowitzki’s single, giving the Rockies a 2-1 lead, while Tulowitzki, who had earlier singled, would move up to third. The Rockies would tie the game up at five-all in the seventh as, with runners on the corners, and with one out, Tulowitzki hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Gonzalez, who had earlier doubled, and would go to third on Fowler’s bunt attempt which became a bunt single as Scott Eyre sprained his ankle trying to make the play. The Phils would regain the lead in the ninth as, with runners on the corners and with one man out, Howard would hit a sacrifice fly, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier singled, would move to second on Victorino’s sacrifice bunt, and then go to third on an infield single by Utley, who had hit a ball at the plate that should had been called dead as it had hit him, giving the Phils a 6-5 lead, while sending Utley up to second. The Rockies made one last attempt to tie the game in their half of the ninth, as they got two men on, both via walks to Gonzalez, who then stole second, and to Helton as he was pitched around, with two men out. But, the threat would end as Tulowitzki hit a fly ball to left for the final out.
