The Phils defeat the Mets, as Cole Hamels becomes the majors first eight game winner, as they win 8-4.
The Phils took a 2-0 lead in the fourth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Ty Wigginton hits a two-run double, scoring Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino, who had both reached base via walks. The Mets would tie the game up at two-all in the fifth as, with a runner on first, and with nobody out, Vinny Rottino hits a two-run home run, his second home run of the season, knocking in Lucas Duda, who had started the inning off with a walk. The Phils would retake the lead in the sixth as, with one man on, and with nobody out, John Mayberry, Jr. hits a two-run home run, his second home run of the year, scoring Wigginton, who had started the inning off with a walk. The Mets would retie the game up at four-all in their half of the sixth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Scott Hairston hits a two-run home run, his fifth home run of the season, knocking in Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who had started the inning off with a single. The Phils would regain the lead for good in the seventh as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Wigginton hits an RBI single, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who had started the inning off with a single, moving up to second base on Placido Polanco’s ground out, 1-6-3, as he reached second base as shortstop David Wright’s foot never touched the bag, then moved up to third on Victorino’s fly out to center field, giving the Phils a 5-4 lead, while sending Pence, who had just walked, up to second base. The Phils then took an 8-4 lead in the ninth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Wigginton hits a three-run home run, his fourth home run of the season, knocking in Polanco, who had started the inning off with a single, then stopped at second base on Pence’s single, and Pence, who had earlier singled. That would be the final score as Jonathan Papelbon would come in and pitch a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out Rottino, swinging, for the game’s final out.

The Phils (26-24, T-4th) will continue their series with the Mets (27-22, T-2nd) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citi Field and will start at 7:10 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Joe Blanton (4-4, 4.55) who is coming off a no-decision against the Cardinals on May 24, as he went four and one-third innings, giving up seven runs on ten hits and a walk, while striking out five, in the Phils’ 10-9 win. He will try to pitch out of his present slide of two straight bad starts. The Mets will counter with Jeremy Hefner (0-2, 6.17), who is coming off a lost against the Padres on May 24, as he went just three and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on nine hits, while striking out three, in the Mets’ 11-5 lost. He is still looking for his first major league win. The Phils hope to win the series, while trying to put themselves back into the middle of the pack in the NL East.
