In a well pitched game, the Mets finally took the lead in the fifth as, with a runner on first and with two men out, Carlos Beltran hits an RBI double, knocking in David Wright, who had just singled, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. The Phils tied it up at one-all in the eighth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI single, knocking in pinch hitter John Mayberry, Jr., who had earlier walked, then went to second on Shane Victorino’s sacrifice bunt, while sending Jimmy Rollins, who had also walked, over to third base. The game then developed into a battle of the bullpens until the top of the fourteenth as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Ronnie Paulino hits an RBI double, knocking in Wright, who had earlier singled, went to second on Jason Bay’s single, then moved up to third base on Ike Davis’ deep fly out to center, giving the Mets a 2-1 lead, while sending Bay, who had just singled, over to third. That would be the final score as the Phils went down 1-2-3 in their half of the fourteenth, with Mayberry, Jr. striking out, swinging, for the final out.  

Cliff Lee received a no-decision as he pitched for seven innings, giving up just one run on eight hits and two walks, while striking out five. Michael Stutes, Antonio Bastardo, Ryan Madson and Danys Baez combine for four scoreless innings, giving up two hits (Bastardo (1), Baez (1)) and three walks (Bastardo (1), Madson (2)), while striking out four (Bastardo (2), Madson (1), Baez (2)) between them. Kyle Kendrick (1-2, 2.08) took the lost as he pitched three innings, giving up a run on four hits and two walks, while striking out one. Chris Young also received a no-decision as he pitched seven innings, giving up two hits and three walks, while striking out seven, as he once again kept the Phils off-balanced with his pitching. Jason Isringhausen received his fifth hold of the year as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on two walks. Tim Byrdak received his first blown save of the season as he pitched to one batter, giving up a hit. Francisco Rodriguez pitched one and one-third scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk, while striking out a batter. Pedro Beato pitched three scoreless innings, giving up two hits, as he struck out two. Taylor Buchholz (1-0, 1.15) gets the win as he pitched two 1-2-3 innings, striking out two.

The Phils had only seven hits in the game, with Brian Schneider leading the team with two hits, a single and a double. Shane Victorino, Placido Polanco, Ryan Howard, Ben Francisco and Pete Orr had the other five Phils’ hits, all singles, with Howard knocking in the lone run. The Phils offense had only two real chances last night, getting only one key hit, Howards’ RBI single in the eighth, while Lee and the bullpen kept the Mets under control for most of the night.

The Phils (18-9, 1st) have the day off today, before they start a three-game series tomorrow night with the Nationals (13-14, 4th). The Phils announced that Roy Oswalt will be back with the team on Thursday, while they have activated Dom Brown, before sending him to Lehigh Valley to continue his rehab. They have also announced that Chase Utley had played three innings in a simulated game, to monitor his progress. Hopefully he will be back by the All-Star break.

The Mets took the lead in the fourth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Carlos Beltran hits an RBI single, knocking in Daniel Murphy, who had earlier singled, and then moved up to second on David Wright’s infield single, beating out Placido Polanco’s throw to second base, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead, while sending Wright, who had just singled, up to second base. Roy Halladay would then get out of trouble by getting Jason Bay to fly out to center field for the first out, as Wright would move up to third, then get Ike Davis to foul out to the third baseman for the inning’s second out, before ending the inning by getting Josh Thole to ground out, 6-3. The game would then be a pitcher’s duel, with Halladay giving up just one run for seven innings on six hits, as he struck out seven, helped along by a double play, while Mets’ starter Jon Niese kept the Phils off-balance for six innings, scattering four hits and one walk, while striking out two. The Phils would then tie the game up at one-all in the seventh as John Mayberry, Jr. hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the year. The Phils then took the lead five batters later as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Wilson Valdez, a walk by Dane Sardinha, sending Valdez to second base, and a single by Shane Victorino, sending Valdez on to third, and Sardinha to second, and with one man out, Polanco hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Valdez, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while sending Sardinha on to third. That would be more than enough for Roy Halladay, as he would give up only one more hit, and a walk, being helped by a double play in the eighth and his eighth strikeout in the ninth, before ending the game by getting Davis to ground out, 3-1.

He started the game with eighteeen straight strikes, and would end up with a strike/walk ratio of 80/27. Jon Niese (1-4, 4.71) took the lost as he went six and one-third innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out three. Taylor Buchholz pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a hit. Tim Byrdak pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only man he would face. Jason Isringhausen pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a walk.

The Phils then added to their lead in the fifth as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Shane Victorino and Polanco, with Victorino stopping at second base, and with Howard being hit by the pitch, moving up both runners, and with one man out, Ben Francisco hits a two-run single, knocking in both Victorino and Polanco, making it a 4-0 Phils’ lead, while sending Howard up to second base. The Mets tried to score again in the sixth as, with two men on, via a single by Wright, and a walk to Beltran, with Wright stopping at second base, and with no one out, before Worley got Jason Bay to hit into a 6-4-3 double play, wiping out Beltran at second base, while sending Wright on to third, and then ended the inning by getting Ian Davis to fly out to left. The Phils, in their last three games, had been hitting and scoring runs again. I just hope it’ll last for a while.

The Phils (17-8, 1st) will continue their weekend series with the Mets (11-15, 5th), with an afternoon game that will be televised on Fox. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 1:10 pm. The Phils will send to the mound their ace, Roy Halladay (3-1, 2.41), who is coming off a win against the Padres on April 24, as he pitched eight and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on five hits and a walk, while striking out fourteen, in the Phils’ 3-1 win. Roy will be going for his second win against the Mets and his fourth for the year. The Mets will try to counter with Joe Niese (1-3, 5.10), who is coming off a win against the D-backs on April 24, as he went seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks, while he struck out three, in the Mets’ 8-4 win. He will be trying to even up the series for the Mets. The Phils will be trying for a three games winning streak later today.

Last week the Phils’ picked up, via waivers, infielder Carlos Rivero from the Cleveland Indians.

The team is still looking for low price free agents for their bullpen, while pondering whether to give new contracts to either Chad Durbin or Jose Contreras, or to both pitchers. In the meantime, they are in the hunt to resign Jayson Werth, but since his agent Scott Boras is asking for money in the Matt Holliday/Jason Bay range, it is more than likely that he won’t be back in red pinstripes.

It has been announced on Monday that ex-Phil Jamie Moyer has re-injured his left elbow while pitching winter ball in the Dominican Republic, while trying to prove that he can still pitch. Ouch. Talk about a setback. Hope it wasn’t too bad an injury, Jamie.

It was also announced yesterday that former Phil GM Pat Gillick is on the Hall of Fame ballot that is being sent to the committee to elect those managers, executives and retired players who were not elected originally, who come from Baseball’s Expansion-era (post-1960). Congrats on getting on the Ballot, Pat, and wish you luck getting into the Hall. You deserve it.

Lastly, today, there is speculation that former Phil, ex-Orioles manager and fan favorite, Juan Samuel, is thinking of taking over Davey Lopes’ position as the team’s first base coach. If he does, that should be good news for the team, since he was a very successful base stealer during his days as a ballplayer. Is has also been announced that they are looking at Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg as the new manager for their Triple-A Lehigh Valley ballclub, as he is leaving the Cubs Triple-A club after being pass over as the main club’s new manager. He might be another popular move, if the Phils do go after him. Whether the pair will actually get either post is another question.

The Mets increase their lead to 2-0 in the second as, with two men on, and with one man out, Jeff Francoeur hits an RBI single, knocking in Angel Pagan, who had earlier singled, and then went to third on Rod Barajas’ single, while sending Barajas, who had just singled, on to second base. The Mets add to their lead in the fourth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Francouer hits a sacrifice fly, scoring David Wright, who had earlier doubled, and had gone to third on Barajas’ fly out to center, giving the Mets a 3-0 lead. The Mets would make it 4-0 in the fifth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Bay hits an RBI single, scoring Reyes, who had earlier reached base on a bunt single, stole second base, his second steal of the night, then went to third on Castillo’s ground out, 6-3. He will be trying to continue the Phils’ present offensive woes. The Phils are looking to take their present offensive frustrations out on somebody. It wouldn’t hurt for them to take it out on the Mets.

The Phils will send their ace Roy Halladay (4-1, 1.80), to the mound after having suffered his first lost of the seasons on April 26 at the hands of the Giants, as he went seven innings, giving up five runs on ten hits, while he struck out five, in the Phils’ 5-1 lost. He will be trying to get back on the winning track, while trying to put the Phils back on the winning track. He will be opposed by Mike Pelfrey (4-0, 0.69), who is coming off a win against the Braves on April 25, as he pitched five inning, giving up no runs on five hits and five walks, while striking out three, in the Mets’ 1-0 win. He will be trying to continue his scoreless streak. The Phils will be trying to start off the month of May on a good note, after ending April with a winning record.

The Phils salvaged a win with a six-run rally in the seventh inning against the Red Sox, avoiding being swept.

After coming home from a 7-3 road trip, which included seeing the Phils take two out of three games from the Mets at Citi Field, the Phillies come home and went on to lose the first two games of a three games series with the Boston Red Sox as Interleague Play resumes. The Phillies then won the final game of the series, after coming from behind to take the lead in the fifth before taking the game for good with a six-run seventh, as the Phils defeated the American League East leading Red Sox, 11-6, thus avoiding the sweep, while leaving themselves at 3-3 in Interleague Play.

The Phils took the lead in the first as, with runners on the corners, and two men out, Jayson Werth hits an RBI single, knocking in Chase Utley, who had earlier singled, and had gone to third on Ryan Howard’s single, making it a 1-0 Phils’ lead, while Howard went on to second. The Red Sox would come back in the second as Rocco Baldelli started the inning off with a lead-off home run, his third home run of the second, tying the game up at one. The next batter game the Bosox the lead as Nick Green hits a solo home run, his third home run of the season, making the score, 2-1 Red Sox. Four batters later, with runners on the corners, and one man out, the Bosox increased their lead to 3-1 as Jacoby Ellsbury hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in George Kottaras, who had earlier walked, and had gone to third on Julio Lugo’s single. After a walk to Kevin Youkilis moved Lugo up to second base, Jason Bay would bring Lugo home with a single, giving Boston a 4-1 lead, while sending Youkilis up to second. The score would stay 4-1 Boston until the fifth inning. Pedro Feliz started the inning off with a single, before moving up to second base on a Chris Coste single. Phils’ starter J.A. Happ would move both men up a base with a sacrifice bunt, 3-4, putting both man in scoring position. With runners on second and third and one out, Jimmy Rollins would hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Feliz from third, and making it a 4-2 Red Sox’s lead, while sending Coste over to third. Shane Victorino then made it a 4-3 ballgame with an RBI single, knocking in Coste. Utley followed with an infield single, sending Victorino up to second base, who would then go on to third on the throwing error committed on the play by Red Sox’s third baseman Mike Lowell, while Utley would move up to second, putting two runners once again into scoring position. Howard then gave the Phils a 5-4 lead with a two-run double, knocking in both Victorino and Utley. The Bosox would tie the game up at five-all in the sixth as Red Sox starter Josh Beckett started off the inning with a lead-off home run, his first home run of the season. The Phillies then took full control in the seventh. Rollins started the inning off by hitting a lead-off home run, his fifth home run of the year, giving the Phils a 6-5 lead. Three batters later, with two men on, and still nobody out, the Phils would increase their lead to 7-5, as Victorino, who had earlier singled and then stole second, scored on a force play-throwing error on a Howard grounder to first, 3-6, forcing out Utley, who had earlier walked, at second, while Red Sox’s shortstop Lugo threw the ball past the first baseman, allowing Howard to reach first base. Three batters later, with runners in scoring position and now two men out, Feliz hits a two-run double, knocking in Howard, who had went to third on Werth’s double, and Werth, who had just doubled, making it 9-5 Phils. After Coste is intentionally walked, and then Chan Ho Park is walked to load the bases, Rollins is hit by the pitch, forcing in Feliz, to give the Phils a 10-5 lead, while Coste and Park both moved up a base, as the Phils battered around. Victorino followed with a walk, bringing in Coste, and making it an 11-5 Phils’ lead, with Park and Rollins moving up a base. The inning would finally end with an Utley strike out. The Red Sox would get a run back in the eighth as, with runners on first and third, and nobody out, Lugo hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Kottaras, who had earlier doubled, and had gone to third on an Eric Bruntlett fielding error when he tried to pick up the ball after it had dropped in between him and Victorino, making it an 11-6 Phils’ lead. That would end up being the final score as Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless ninth.

J.A. Happ got a no-decision as he pitched five and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and six walks, while striking out three. Chan Ho Park got the win as he pitched two and a third innings, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, striking out three. His record is now 3-1 with a 6.08 ERA. Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up just two hits. Josh Beckett took the lost, as he went six innings plus two batters, giving up seven runs, six of which were earned, on eleven hits, as he struck out five. His record is 7-3 with a 4.15 ERA. Daniel Bard pitched two-thirds of an innings, giving up four runs on two hits and three walks, while striking out one. Takashi Saito pitched a third of an inning, giving up a walk, as he struck out a batter. Justin Masterson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out one.

The Phillies collected fourteen hits in the game, with Pedro Feliz leading the way with three hits, knocking in two runs, as he increased his average to .318. He was followed by Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth, who each collected two hits. Jimmy Rollins, Eric Bruntlett and Chris Coste had the other three hits. Besides Feliz, Rollins brought home three runs, Howard and Victorino each knocked in two runs and Werth had one RBI.

The first place Phillies (36-25), have the day-off today, as they lead the Mets by four games. Their next game will be tomorrow night at home against the Toronto Blue Jays.
