Post # 700: Mets power past the Phils as Kyle Kendrick loses his first start, 9-1.

The Mets come to Citizens Bank Park and put on a power display as they crush the still struggling Phils, 9-1, as they hand Kyle Kendrick his first official decision.

The Mets took the lead in the second as, with one man on base, and with nobody out, David Wright hits a two-run bomb, his fourth home run of the season, as he scored Jason Bay, who had earlier doubled, giving the Mets a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, with one man out, Jeff Francoeur increased the Mets’s lead to 3-0 as he hits a solo home run, his fourth home run of the year. The Phils would get a run back in their half of the second as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Carlos Ruiz hits an RBI single, knocking in Jayson Werth, who had earlier singled and then went to third on Juan Castro’s single, cutting the Mets’ lead to 3-1, while sending Castro, who had just singled, up to second base. But, the Mets’ offense would do the scoring for the rest of the night. The Mets increased their lead in the fifth as Rod Barajas hurt the Phils again as he hits a lead-off home run, his fourth home run of the year, to give the Mets a 4-1 lead. The Mets then broke the game open in the seventh. With a runner on second, and with nobody out, Barajas hits an RBI double, knocking in Francoeur, who had earlier been hit by a pitch, and then stole second, giving the Mets a 5-1 lead. Two batters later, with runners on the corners, and with still no outs, Angel Pagan hits a two-run triple, scoring Barajas, who had gone to third on Danys Baez’s wild pitch, and Mets’ starter Jon Niese, who had earlier walked, to give the Mets a 7-1 lead. Then two batters later, with one man out, Jose Reyes made it 8-1 with an RBI single, knocking in Pagan. In the ninth, the Mets made it 9-1 as Barajas welcomed Brad Lidge with a lead-off home run, his fifth home run of the season and his second home run of the game. That would be the final score as the Phils went down weakly in their half of the ninth.

Kyle Kendrick took the lost as he pitches five innings, giving up four runs on five hard hits, all for extra-bases, and one walk, while striking out three. His record is now 0-1 with a 7.61 ERA. Danys Baez pitches one inning plus four batters, giving up four run on two hard hits, both for extra-bases and a walk. David Herndon pitches two innings, giving up no runs on a hit. Brad Lidge pitches a third of an inning, giving up a run on two hits. J.C. Romero pitches two-thirds of an inning, getting out both men that he would face. Jon Niese gets the win as he goes seven innings, giving up a run on four hits and a walk, while he strikes out seven. His record is now 1-1 with a 3.10 ERA. Je Mejia and Manny Acosta combine for two shut out innings, giving up just two hits (one each) and a walk (Acosta), while striking out one (Mejia).

The Phils were only able to get six hits in the game, all singles. Jayson Werth lead the club with two hits, followed by Shane Victorino, Raul Ibanez, Juan Castro and Carlos Ruiz, with Ruiz knocking in the only Phil run.

The Phils (12-9, 3rd) continue their three-game series with the Mets (14-9, 1st). The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 3:05 pm Eastern. The game will be televised nationally on Fox. The Phils will send their ace Roy Halladay (4-1, 1.80), to the mound after having suffered his first lost of the seasons on April 26 at the hands of the Giants, as he went seven innings, giving up five runs on ten hits, while he struck out five, in the Phils’ 5-1 lost. He will be trying to get back on the winning track, while trying to put the Phils back on the winning track. He will be opposed by Mike Pelfrey (4-0, 0.69), who is coming off a win against the Braves on April 25, as he pitched five inning, giving up no runs on five hits and five walks, while striking out three, in the Mets’ 1-0 win. He will be trying to continue his scoreless streak. The Phils will be trying to start off the month of May on a good note, after ending April with a winning record.
