The Phils suffer their first lost of the season as they lose the game in the bottom of the ninth, losing to the Rangers, 3-2.
The Phils break up a 0-0 tie in the top of the sixth as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Jimmy Rollins hits an RBI single, knocking in Cesar Hernandez, who had earlier doubled, then reached third base on Ben Revere’s sacrifice bunt, beating pitcher Martin Perez’s throw to third base, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Revere, who had reached first base on the bunt, up to second base. Four batters later, after Chase Utley had flown out to center field for the inning’s first out, Revere was picked off at second base, 1-4, after having first been called safe, as the call was successfully challenged by Rangers’ manager Ron Washington, for the inning’s second out, and Marlon Byrd had singled, moving Rollins up to second base, the Phils added to their lead as Ryan Howard hits an RBI double, knocking in Rollins, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead, while sending Byrd on to third base. The Rangers got a run back in their half of the sixth as, with a man on second, and with nobody out, Mitch Moreland hits an RBI single, scoring Alex Rios, who had started the inning off with a double, making it a 2-1 Phils’ lead. The Rangers would tie the game up as 2-all in the bottom of the seventh as, with a man on third, and with two men out, Adrian Beltre hits an RBI double, knowing in Shin-Soo Choo, who had started the inning off with a single, moved up to second base on Elvis Andrus’ sacrifice bunt, 1-4 and Prince Fielder’s ground out, 6-3. The Rangers would win the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Beltre hits a walk-off single, knocking in Choo, who had started the inning off with a walk, then moved up to second base on Andrus’ second sacrifice bunt of the ballgame, 3-4, giving the Rangers a 3-2 win.
A.J. Burnett received a no-decision as he pitched six strong innings, giving up a run on seven hits and two walks, while striking out three. Jake Diekman blew his first save of the season as he pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, while striking out a batter. Antonio Bastardo threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two. Mario Hollands, pitching in his first Major League ballgame, took the lost (0-1, 27.00) as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on two walks. B.J. Rosenberg pitched to one batter, getting nobody out as he gave up a hit. Martin Perez also received a no-decision as he pitched five and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, as he struck out seven. Jason Frasor pitched an inning and a third, striking out a batter. Neal Cotts pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk, while striking out two. Joakim Soria got the win (1-0, 0.00) as he threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter.
The Phils had eight hits in the game, with Marlon Byrd (Singles) and Cesar Hernandez (Single, Double) both leading the team with two hits each.
