A five-run first leads to the National League winning it third straight All-Star Game as they defeat the American League, 8-0.

The National League wins its third straight All-Star Game as it blanked the American League, 8-0.

The National League jumped into the lead in the first as, with a man on first, and with one man out, the Brewers’ Ryan Braun hits an RBI double, knocking in the Giants Melky Cabrera, who had earlier singled, giving the National League a 1-0 lead. The NL then took a 4-0 lead four batters later as, with the bases loaded, thanks to walks to the Cardinals’ Carlos Beltan, moving Braun up to second base, and to the Giants’ Buster Posey, moving both Braun and Beltran up a base, and with two men out, the Giants’ Pablo Sandoval hits a three-run triple, clearing the bases. The NL then increased their lead as the Braves’ Dan Uggla hits an RBI single, scoring Sandoval, giving the NL a 5-0 lead. The NL added to their lead in the fourth as, with a man on third, and with two men out, the Cardinals’ pinch hitter Matt Holliday hits an RBI single, knocking in fellow Cardinal Rafael Furcal, who had just tripled, giving the NL a 6-0 lead. The NL then took an 8-0 lead as Cabrera (who was later made the All-Star Game’s MVP) hits a two-run home run, knocking in Holliday. That would end up being the final as the Phils’ Jonathan Papelbon preserved the shut out by getting the Orioles’ Matt Wieters to fly out to right for the final out.

The Giants’ Matt Cain (1-0, 0.0) gets the win as he threw two scoreless innings, giving up a hit, while striking out one. Gio Gonzalez (Nationals), Stephen Strasburg (Nationals), Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers), R.A. Dickey (Mets), Cole Hamels (Phils), Craig Kimbrel (Braves), Aroldis Chapman (Reds), Wade Miley (Diamondbacks), Joel Hanrahan (Pirates) and Jonathan Papelbon (Phils) would combine for seven scoreless innings, giving up five hits (Strasburg (1), Kershaw (2), Dickey (1), Miley (1)) and three walks (Strasburg (1), Kershaw (1), Chapman (1)) between them, while striking out seven (Cain (1), Gonzalez (1), Dickey (1), Kimbrel (2), Chapman (1), Hanrahan (1)). The Tigers’ Justin Verlander (0-1, 45.00) took the lost as he pitched an inning, giving up five runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out two. Joe Nathan (Rangers) and David Price (Rays) combined for a pair of 1-2-3 innings. The Rangers’ Matt Harrison pitched an inning, giving up three runs on four hits. Jered Weaver (Angels), Chris Sale (White Sox), Ryan Cook (Athletics), Jim Johnson (Orioles) and Fernando Rodney (Rays) would combine for five scoreless innings, giving up two hits (Sale) and a walk (Weaver) between them, while striking out four (Sale (1), Cook (2), Johnson (1)).

The National League squad had ten hits in the game, with Melky Cabrera of the Giants (Single, Home Run, 2 RBIs) and Ryan Braun of the Brewers (Double, Triple, RBI) leading the squad with two hits apiece. Pablo Sandoval of the Giants (Triple, 3 RBIs), Dan Uggla of the Braves (Single, RBI), Rafael Furcal of the Cardinals (Triple), pinch hitter Matt Holliday of the Cardinals (Single, RBI), pinch hitter Chipper Jones of the Braves (Single) and Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates (Single) had the other six NL hits. The NL also had three walks. The American League squad had only six hits in the game, all singles, by Derek Jeter of the Yankees, Robinson Cano of the Yankees, David Ortiz of the Red Sox, Mike Napoli of the Rangers, Mike Trout of the Angels and Joe Mauer of the Twins. The AL also had three walks, a stolen base (Trout) and a hit batter (Paul Konerko of the White Sox).

Among the Phils representatives, Carlos Ruiz came into game in the sixth inning, making one plate appearance, flying out to left. Cole Hamels pitched the seventh inning, throwing a 1-2-3 inning. Jonathan Papelbon pitched to one batter, getting the game’s final out on a fly out to right.

With the win, the NL will have home field advantage during the 2012 World Series.

The Twins took the lead in the fourth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Danny Valencia hits a two-run double, knocking in Delmon Young, who had earlier doubled, and Michael Cuddyer, who had just singled on a pop up that was not fielded by third baseman Michael Martinez, giving the Twins a 2-0 lead, before Valencia is thrown out at third, trying to stretch the double into a triple, 8-6-5, for the inning’s second out. The next batter, Luke Hughes, then made it a 3-0 Twins’ lead as he hits a solo home run, his first home run of the spring. The Twins increased their lead to 6-0 in the fifth as, with two men on, and with one man out, D. Young hits a three-run home run, his first home run of the spring, as he scored Alexi Casilla and Tsuyoshi Nishioka, who both got on base with singles, with Casilla stopping at second base on Nishioka’s single. The Phils finally got on the board in the eighth as, with two men on, and with two men out, pinch hitter Delwyn Young hits an RBI single, knocking in Cory Sullivan, who had earlier walked, then moved up to second base on John Mayberry, Jr’s single, making it a 6-1 Twins’ lead, while Mayberry, who had just singled, would stop at second base. One batter later, the Phils cut the Twins’ lead to 6-3 as Dane Sardinha hits a two-run double, knocking in both Mayberry and De. Young. The Twins would get one of the runs back in the ninth as, with two men out, Dustin Martin would hit a solo home run, his first home run of the spring, making it a 7-3 Twins’ lead. This would end up being the final score, as the Phils went down 1-2-3 in their half of the ninth.

Cole Hamels took the lost (1-1, 6.75) as he pitched six and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on nine hits, while striking out seven. Danys Baez pitched two-thirds scoreless innings. J.C. Romero also pitched two-thirds scoreless innings, giving up a walk. Brad Lidge then followed with two-thirds innings, giving up a run on two hits and two walks, while striking out two. Mike Zagurski pitched a third of an inning, striking out the only man he would face. Nick Blackburn (3-1, 2.05) picked up the win as he pitched six shutout innings, giving up six hits and a walk, while striking out five. Matt Capps pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit. Joe Nathan pitched an inning, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk. Jose Mijares pitched a 1-2-3 inning.

The Phils had ten hits in the game, with Ross Gload (two singles) and Carlos Ruiz (single, double), leading the team with two hits each. Raul Ibaenz (Single), John Mayberry, Jr. (Single), Dane Sardinha (Double, 2 RBIs), Cole Hamels (Single), Rich Thompson (Single) and Pinch Hitter Delwyn Young (Single, RBI) had the other six Phils’ hits.

After four scoreless innings, the Phils took the lead in the fifth as, with runners on the corners and with nobody out, Josh Barfield hits an RBI double, knocking in Michael Martinez, who had earlier doubled and had moved up to third on Freddy Galvis’ bunt single, while sending Glavis, who had earlier got on base on a bunt single, over to third base, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 3-0 lead as Wilson Valdez hits a two-run double, knocking in both Galvis and Barfield. The Phils then took a 6-0 lead as, with two men on, and with one man out, Delwyn Young hits a three-run home run, his first home run of the spring, knocking in Valdez, who had moved up to third on a Ben Francisco ground out, 5-3, and John Mayberry, Jr., who had just walked, and then stole second base. The Twins tried to come back in their half of the seventh, as, with runners on second and third, and with nobody out, Yangervis Solarte, who was pinch running for Delmon Young, who had earlier doubled, and then moved up to third on a Matt Anderson wild pitch, scored on a second Anderson wild pitch, making it a 6-1 Phils’ lead, while sending Mike Hollimon, who had earlier singled, had moved up to first second base and then to third on the two wild pitches. The Twins then made it a 6-2 Phils’  lead as Jim Thome reached base on a fielding error by first baseman Mayberry, scoring Hollimon from third. Five batters later, with the bases loaded, via Chase Lambin being hit by the pitch, moving pinch runner Daniel Rohlfing up to second base, and a walk to Steve Holms, which moved both runners up a base, and with two men out, Rohlfing would score on a wild pitch, the third of the inning, while Lambin would moved up to third and Holms would go to second base, making it a 6-3 Phils’ lead. That would be the final score, as Chris Kissock recorded his first save of the spring.

Michael Stutes received a no-decision as he pitched three scoreless innngs, as he only walked a batter, while striking out one. Danys Baez (1-0, 0.00) received the win as he pitched a scoreless inning. Jason Grilli pitched two scoreless innings, giving up a walk, while striking out three. Matt Anderson pitched a third of an innings, giving up three runs, only two of which were earned, on two hits, a walk and two wild pitches. Ryan Edell recorded his first hold of the year as he pitched one and two-thirds innings, giving up a hit, while striking out three. Chris Kissock recorded his first save of the spring as he pitched an inning, giving up a hit and a walk. Francisco Liriano also received a no-decision as he pitched three innings, giving up just four hits and two walks, while striking out two. Jose Mijares pitched a scoreless innings, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Joe Nathan (0-1, 12.46) took the lost as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up six runs on five hits and a walk. Kyle Gbson pitched one and two-thirds innings, striking out a batter. Eric Hacker and Yorman Bazardo combined for three scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Hacker), while striking out three batters (Hacker (2), Bazardo (1)).

The Phils had eleven hits in the game, with Josh Barfield, Wilson Valdez, Delwyn Young and Michael Martinez each leading the team with two hits each, with Barfield, Valdez and Martinez’s each hitting a single and a double, with Barfield knocking in a run, and Valdez bringing in two, while Young’s hits were a single and a three-run home run. Erik Kratz, Tuffy Gosewisch and Freddy Galvis had the other three Phils’ hits, all singles.

The Phils’ Grapefruit League record is now 11-7.
