Roy Halladay pitches his first complete game of 2011, after holding off a ninth inning Nats’ rally, as the Phils defeat the Nats, 3-2.

Roy Halladay pitches his first complete game of the 2011 season, as the Phils hold off a late inning rally by the Nats, as the Phils win, 3-2.

The Phils took the lead in the fourth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Ben Francisco hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had reached first base on Ian Desmond’s fielding error, moved up to second on Ryan Howard’s slow ground out, 5-3, then was given third on Desmond’s interference error as Rollins and Desmond bump into each other as Rollins was heading towards third base, since no one was covering third, thanks to the shift on Howard. The Phils then took a 2-0 lead in the fifth as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI single, scoring Wilson Valdez, who had earlier walked, had moved up to second base on Roy Halladay’s fail bunt attempt,1-6, as Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier singled, and had moved up to second base on Valdez’s walk, was out at third, then went to third on Shane Victorino’s fly out, scored, while sending Halladay, who was safe at first on his failed bunt attempt, stopped at second base. Two batters later, after Rollins had loaded the bases with a single, moving up both Halladay and Polanco, the Phils took a 3-0 lead as Howard was hit by the pitch, forcing in Halladay, while moving up a base both Polanco and Rollins. That would remain as the score until the bottom of the ninth, when the Nats finally put together a rally. With runners on the corners, and with one man out, Laynce Nix hits an RBI single, scoring Rick Ankiel, who had earlier doubled, then stopped at third on Jayson Werth’s single, cutting the Phils’ lead to 3-1, while sending Werth, who had earlier singled, on to third base. The Nats then cut it down to a 3-2 Phils’ lead, as Danny Espinosa hits an RBI single, scoring Werth, while sending Nix on to second base. But that would be the final score, as Halladay would buckle down and get the last two outs, by first striking out pinch hitter Matt Stairs for the inning’s second out, before ending the game by striking out Ivan Rodriguez, both on called third strikes.

Roy Halladay (2-0, 1,23) got the win as he pitched a complete game, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks, while he had struck out nine. John Lannan (1-1, 3.38) took the lost as he pitched six innings, giving up three runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits and three walks, striking out three. Chad Gaudin, Doug Slaten and Brian Broderick combined for three scoreless innings, giving up a walk (Guadin), while striking out two batters (Guadin and Slaten one batter each), between them. Halladay performed the Phils’ staff first complete game, as he missed pitching a shut out by giving up the first of two runs in the ninth, before striking out the last two batters to end the ballgame.

The Phils had only six hits in the game, with Placido Polanco leading the team with two hits, both singles, as he knocked in a run. Shane Victorino (Double), Jimmy Rollins (Single), Carlos Ruiz (Single) and Wilson Valdez (Single), had the other four Phils’ hits. Ryan Howard and Ben Francisco had the other two Phils’ RBI, Francisco via a ground out and Howard as he was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded. The Phils’ offense did not have many hits in the game, but they were able to score enouigh run to win behind Halladay.

The Phils (8-3, 1st) will conclude their three-game series with the Nationals (5-6, 3rd) later tonight. The game will be played at Nationals Park and will start at 7:05 pm EDT. Cliff Lee (1-1, 7.84), will pitch for the Phils as he is coming off a lost against the Braves on April 8, as he went only three and a third innings, giving up six runs on ten hits and a walk, while striking out three, in the Phils’ 6-3 lost. Lee will be trying to come back from his previous bad start against the Braves, while trying to give the Phils their fourth series win. The Nats will counter with Jordan Zimmermann (1-1, 3.18), who is coming off a win against the Mets, as he lasted five and one thirds innings, giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out four, in the Nats’ 6-2 win. He will be trying for his second win of the season, while also trying to give the Nats the series win. The Phils will be trying to come back to Philly with a winning record.

Jayson Werth help to defeat his old teammates, as the Phils lose to the Nats, 7-4.

Jayson Werth help to defeat his former club, as the Phils lose to the Nationals in Washington, 7-4.

The Phils took the lead in the second as Ryan Howard hits a lead-off home run, his third home run of the season, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Nats tied the game up at one-all in their half of the second as, with two men on, and with one man out, Danny Espinosa hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Wilson Ramos, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Laynce Nix’s single. The Nats then took the lead in the fourth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Ramos hits an RBI double, knocking in Jayson Werth, who had earlier doubled, then went to third on Matt Stairs’ ground out, 6-3, giving the Nats a 2-1 lead. The Nats then increased their lead as, now with the bases loaded, after an infield single by Nix, sending Ramos to third, and a walk to Espinosa, sending Nix up to second base, and with still one man out, Jerry Hairston hits an RBI single, scoring Ramos, giving the Nats a 3-1 lead, while moving up both Nix and Espinosa, leaving the bases loaded. The Nats then took a 4-1 lead as Livan Hernandez performed a successful suicide squeeze, 1-3, for the inning’s second out, scoring Nix, while sending Espinosa on to third base, and Hairston to second base. The Nats then took a 5-1 lead in the fifth as, with one man out, Werth hits a solo home run, his second home run of the season. The Phils tried to get back into the game in the seventh as they loaded the bases, via a single by Raul Ibanez, a single by Carlos Ruiz, sending Ibanez up to second base, and an infield single by Wilson Valdez, moving Ibenez to third base, and Ruiz to second base, with one man out, before they were turned back as Hernandez struck out pinch hitter John Mayberry, Jr., for the inning’s second out, before handing the ball over to reliever Tyler Clippard, who ended the threat by striking out Shane Victorino. The Nats then increased their lead in their half of the seventh as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Rick Ankiel, a walk by Werth, sending Ankiel to second base, a double steal by Ankiel and Werth, and a walk by pinch hitter Michael Morse, and with two men out, Ramos received an RBI walk, forcing in Ankiel, making it a 6-1 Nats’ lead, while sending Werth to third base, and Morse to second base. The Phils would finally get a run back in the eighth as, once again with the bases loaded, via a single to Jimmy Rollins, a walk to Howard, moving Rollins up to second base, and a walk to Ben Francisco, moving up both runners, and with one man out, Ibanez hits into an RBI force out, 4-6, scoring Rollins, to make it a 6-2 Nats’ lead, and sending Howard to third base, as Francisco is wiped out at second base, while upsetting shortstop Ian Desmond enough to allow Ibanez to reach first base before the throw. The Phils then cut the lead to 6-3 as, with runners now on the corners, and now with two men out, Howard would score on Sean Burnett’s wild pitch, while Ibanez would move up to second base. The Nats got a run back in their half of the eighth as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Alex Cora hits an RBI single, knocking in Espinosa, who had earlier walked, then went to second base on Ivan Rodriguez’s ground out, 6-3, making it a 7-3 Nats’ lead, before moving up to second base on the throw to the plate. The Phils then made it a 7-4 Nats’ lead in the ninth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI single, scoring Valdez, who had earlier singled, then went to second on pinch hitter Michael Martinez’s ground out 5-3. That would be the final score as Burnett recorded his third save of the season by getting Rollins to line out to Desmond for the final out.

Joe Blanton (0-1, 10.45) took the lost as he pitched six innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and walk, while he struck out four. David Herrndon pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on one hit and one walk, while striking out two. Antonio Bastardo pitched a third of an inning, walking two batters. Danys Baez pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit and a walk. Livan Hernandez (1-1, 3.50) got the win as he pitched six and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on seven hits, while striking out six. Tyler Clippard recorded his third hold of the year as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on a hit and two walks, while striking out a batter. Sean Burnett received his third save of the season as he pitched one and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on two hits. The Phils’ relief corps did not do well last night, as they allowed two runs to score, thanks in part to four walks coming back to haunt them, with three of them coming in a row in the seventh, forcing in a run with the bases loaded.

The Phils had ten hits in the game, with Placido Polanco (RBI), Jimmy Rollins and Wilson Valdez all leading the team with two hits each, all singles. Ryan Howard (HR, RBI), Ben Francisco (Single), Raul Ibanez (Single, RBI) and Carlos Ruiz (Single), had the other four Phils’ hits. The fourth Phil run came in on a wild pitch. The offense was not able to go to work on Livan Hernandez because he messed them up with his slow pitches, mixed in with some faster stuff.

The Phils (7-3, 1st) will continue their three-games series with the Nats (5-5, T-2nd) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Nationals Park, and will start at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound their ace Roy Halladay (1-0, 0.69), who is coming off a win against the Mets on April 6, as he went seven innings, giving up no runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out seven, in the Phils’ 11-0 rout of the Mets. He will be going for his second win, while trying to even up the series between the two teams. The Nats will try to counter with John Lannan (1-0, 3.60), who is coming off a no-decision against the Marlins on April 7, as he pitched only five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out seven, in the Nats’ 5-3 extra-innings win. He will be trying to give the Nats the series win over the Phils. The Phils will be out to even up the series behind the pitching arm of Roy Halladay, while hoping that the offense will be out to once again score runs in bunches.

Coundown to the Playoffs, Game # 6: The Phils win their fourth straight National League Eastern Division Title behind the two-hit complete game pitching of Roy Halladay, as they defeat the Nats, 8-0.

Behind the two-hit complete game shut out pitching of their ace Roy Halladay, the Phils have clinched their fourth straight National League Eastern Division title as they defeat the Nats, 8-0.

The Phils took the lead in the second as Jayson Werth hits a lead-off home run, his twenty-sixth home run of the season, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the sixth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Werth hits a two-run double, knocking in Placido Polanco, who had earlier singled, then went to second base when Chase Utley was hit by the pitch, and Utley, who had just been hit by the pitch, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 4-0 lead two batters latter as, with runners on the corners, as Raul Ibanez got on base with an infield single, sending Werth to third, and still with two men out, Carlos Ruiz hits an RBI double, scoring Werth, while sending Ibanez over to third. The Phils then busted the game wide open in the ninth as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Polanco hits an RBI single, scoring Wilson Valdez, who had reached first earlier on a strikeout that got away from Wilson Ramos before he threw to third base to nail Ruiz, who had earlier doubled, and then tried to move up to third on the play, who then stole second as Halladay struck out, then stole third base, giving the Phils a 5-0 lead, while sending Shane Victorino, who had just walked, on to third base. The Phils then took a 7-0 lead as Utley hits a two-run double, scoring both Victorino and Polanco. The Phils then made it an 8-0 lead as, after Ryan Howard had walked, Werth hits an RBI infield single to the first baseman, as Utley ran all the way from second base to score, while Howard would move up to second base. That would be more than enough for Halladay as he pitched a complete game shut out, giving up only two hits, a lead-off single to Ramos in the third, before he was wiped out in a 4-6-3 double play by Alberto Gonzalez, and then a lead-off single in the eighth by Adam Dunn, who was then stranded at first, before he ended the game by getting Danny Espinosa to strike out, swinging, his sixth strike out victim.

Roy Halladay gets the win as he pitches a complete game shut out, giving up only two hits, while striking out six. His record is now 21-10 with a 2.44 ERA. John Lannan took the lost as he pitches only five and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, a walk and a hit batter, while striking out three. His record is now 8-8 with a 4.65 ERA. Craig Stammen and Collin Balester combine for two and a third scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Stammen) and a walk (Stammen), while striking out two (Balester) between them. Joe Bisenius pitches two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out two. Miguel Batista pitches a third of an inning, giving up a hit.

The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Placido Polanco, Jayson Werth and Carlos Ruiz all leading the team with three hits each, with Polanco’s hits being all singles, knocking in a run, Werth’s three hits being a single, a double and a solo home run, knocking in four runs and Ruiz’s hits being a single, and two doubles, knocking in a run. Raul Ibanez followed with two hits, a single and a double. Chase Utley had the final Phil hit, a double, knocking in two runs. The Phils’ offense exploded late in the game, after being kept quiet for the early part of the evening.

The Phils (94-63, 1st) continues their three-game series with the Nationals (67-90, 5th) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Nationals Park and will begin at 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phils starter will be Roy Oswalt (13-13 (7-1), 2.80 (1.76)), who is coming off a no-decision against the Braves on September 22, when he pitched seven shut out innings, giving up only a hit and a walk, while striking out eight, in the Phils 1-0 win. In his last three starts, his record is 2-0 with a no-decision, as he had pitched twenty-two innings, giving up just a run on eleven hits and three walks, while striking out twenty-one. He will be going for his eighth win since joining the Phils, and his third straight win against the Nats. The Nats will counter with Jason Marquis (2-9, 7.18), who is coming off a no-decision against the Astros, as he pitched six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out two, in the Nats’ 4-3 win. In his last three starts, his record is 0-2 with a no-decision, as he had pitched twelve and one-third innings, giving up ten runs on eighteen hits and three walks, while striking out ten. He will be trying to not be rough up again by the Phils. The Phils will be trying to make sure that they’ll have the best record in the National League no matter what happens during the rest of the season.

The Phils split two in D.C. as Lidge on Saturday gives up a three-run home run in the ninth in a 9-7 Walk-Off lost to the Nats before nailing down Sunday’s 6-4 win in extra-inning.

The Phils lose Saturday night’s game, 7-5, as Brad Lidge gives up a three-run home run after Carlos Ruiz had given them a one run lead in the top of the ninth, before he save the game on Sunday as the Phils’ defeat the Nationals in eleven innings, 6-4.

On Saturday, the Nationals took the lead in the first as, with two men on, and with two men out, Josh Willingham hits an RBI single, knocking in Nyjer Morgan, who had earlier singled, and had gone up to second on Ryan Zimmerman’s single, giving the Nats a 1-0 lead, while sending Zimmerman, who had earlier singled, on to third base. The Nats then made it a 3-0 lead as Ivan Rodriguez hits an RBI single, scoring Willingham, while sending Bernadina on to third. The Phils would get a run back in the fourth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Wilson Valdez hits an RBI single, scoring Dom Brown, who was earlier safe on a force out, 4-6, wiping out Jayson Werth, who had earlier walked, and had moved up to second base on Carlos Ruiz’s single, cutting the Nats’ lead down to 3-1, while sending Ruiz, who had just singled, up to second base. The Phils cut the Nats’ lead down to 3-2 in the sixth as, with one man out, Ruiz hits a solo home run, his third home run of the season. The Nats added to their lead in their half of the sixth as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Ian Desmond hits a sacrfiice fly, scoring Bernadina, who had earlier doubled, and had gone to third on Rodriguez’s single, making it a 4-2 Nats’ lead. Brad Lidge was then given the ball to save it. Sadly, he did not. He was greeted by Michael Moore with a single to center. After Morgan moves Moore up to second on a sacrifice bunt, 3-4, for the inning’s first out, Lidge walks Adam Kennedy to put two men on base. The next batter, Ryan Zimmerman, then hits a 2-1 fastball into center field for a three-run home run, his eighteenth home run of the year, for a 7-5 walk-off win.

Joe Blanton receives a no-decision as he pitches six innings, giving up four runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out eight. Jose Contreras and Ryan Madson together pitches two scoreless innings giving up a hit (Contreras) and a walk (Contreras), while striking out four Nats (Contreras (2), Madson (2)). In Sunday’s game, the Phils’ took the lead in the first as, with two men on, and with two men out, Ben Francisco hits an RBI single, scoring Werth, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Ryan Howard, who was earlier hit by the pitch, up to second base, before he was taken out of the game for a sprained ankle, as he went back to second base wrong. After Howard was replaced at second base by pinch runner Cody Ransom, the Phils took a 2-0 lead as Brown hits an RBI single, scoring Ransome, while sending Francisco to second base. The Nats’ tied the game up at two-all in the fourth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Zimmerman hits a two-run double, scoring Bernadina, who had earlier singled, and had gone to third on Desmond’s double, and Desmond, who had earlier doubled. The Nats took a 4-2 lead in the sixth as, with a man on base, and with one out, Adam Dunn hits a two-run home run, his twenthy-fifth home run of the season, scoring Desmond, who had earlier singled. Three batters later, with runners on the corners, as Polanco went to third on a Gload pinch hit single, and with one man out, Francisco hits a grounder to third, that Zimmerman did not catch cleanly, before throwing to second base, 5-4, to force out Gload at second for the inning’s second out, but was unable to throw out Francisco, allowing Polanco to score the tying run, as the Phils tied the score 4-4 on the force out. The Phils would retake the lead in the eleventh as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Polanco hits an RBI single, knocking in Valdez, who was safe at first on a bunt attempt, although replays showed that he was actually out, the Phils catching a break, moved up to second on pinch hitter Roy Oswalt’s sacrifice bunt, 3-4, and then went to third on Rollins’ fly out to center, giving the Phils a 5-4 lead. The Phil made it a 6-4 lead as Werth hits an RBI double, scoring Polanco. The Phils then handed the ball over to Lidge, who this time had a 1-2-3 inning, recording his eleventh save of the year.

The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Placido Polanco leading the team with three hits, two singles and a double, knocking in two runs. Jayson Werth, Ben Francisco and Wilson Valdez follow with two hits each, with Werth’s hits being doubles, knocking in a run, while Francisco’s hits were a single and a double, knocking in two runs, and Valdez’s hits were both singles. Dom Brown, Cole Hamels and pinch hitter Ross Gload had the other three Phils’ hits, all singles, with Brown knocking in a run. The Phils’ offense, while scoring runs, haven’t busted open a game on the road since the All-Star break. They’re due for a few, although they might not be able to do it for a while with Ryan Howard being day-to-day because of his ankle injury.

The Phils (57-48, 2nd NL East), now two and a half games behind the Braves in the East (if not for Lidge’s blown save on Saturday, they could be a game and a half behind the Braves, as Atlanta lost two of three to the Reds in Cincinnati during the weekend) have the day off today, before they go to face the Marlins for three in Miami, starting tomorrow night. Who would have thought that with all of the problems the Phils have had this year, they would still be within striking distance of the Braves in the East? I’m sure most people wouldn’t, including a lot of my fellow Phillies fans. This means that either this team is very resiliant, or the Braves aren’t as strong as everyone have been thinking they were during the last two months.

The Phils starts off the 2010 regular season with an 11-1 laughter against the Nats in D.C.

The Phils start off the 2010 season in spectacular fashion, as they do something they have not done for some time, win on opening day. Behind the one run, six hits, nine strikeouts pitching performance of their new ace Roy Halladay and powered by an offense that scored eleven runs on thirteen hits, including two home runs, with one of them being a grand-slam home run by a returning Placido Polanco, the 2009 National League Champions crushed the Nationals 11-1.

The Nationals would start the scoring off in the bottom of the first, as, with a man on second, via a lead-off single to Nyjer Morgan, who later stole second, Ryan Zimmerman would hit an RBI double to center, scoring Morgan, giving the Nationals a 1-0 lead. The Phils would come back in the fourth, as they took a 2-1 lead on a two-run home run by Ryan Howard, his first home run of the season, knocking in Chase Utley, who has gotten on base earlier with a lead-off walk. Three batters later, Shane Victorino would make it a 3-1 Phils’ lead as he hit an RBI single, scoring Jayson Werth, who earlier got on base with a single, and then went to third on Raul Ibanez’s single, putting runners on the corners, while sending Ibanez, who has just singled, to second base. One out later, after a fly out to right field by Carlos Ruiz has moved Ibanez up to third and sent Victorino over to second, Phils’ starter, Halladay, helped his own cause by hitting an RBI single off of Nats’ starter, John Lannan, scoring Ibanez from third, while sending Victorino to third, once again putting runners on the corners, with the score now 4-1 Phils. After a walk to Jimmy Rollins loaded up the bases, sending Halladay up to second base, Polanco made it 5-1 Phils by hitting a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Victorino. The Phils would increase their lead in the sixth as, with a runner on first, and with one out, Rollins would hit an RBI triple, scoring Ruiz from first, who had earlier walked, giving the Phils a 6-1 lead. Polanco would make it a 7-1 Phils’ lead with an RBI single, knocking in Rollins. One inning later, in the seventh, the Phils would bust the game wide open as, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Ibanez, a one-out single to Ruiz, which moved Ibanez up to second base, a ground out, 2-3, by Halladay, which would move Ibanez up to third and send Ruiz over to second base, and an intentional walk to Rollins, Polanco would empty the bases with a grand-slam home run, his first home run of the year, making it an 11-1 Phillies’ lead. That would be the final score as Hallady, after keeping the Nationals off of the scoreboard from innings 2-7, hands the ball over to the bullpen, who handled the Nats easily for the final two innings, preserving the win.

Roy Halladay gets the win, as he pitches seven very strong innings, giving up only one earned run on six hits and two walks while striking out nine. His record is now 1-0 with an ERA of 1.29. Antonio Bastardo, Danys Baez and David Herndon combined for two shutout innings, giving up three hits (Bastardo (1), Herndon (2)) and one walk (Bastardo), while striking out two (Bastardo (1), Herndon (1)). John Lannan got the lost for the Nationals, as he went only three and two-third innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks. His record is now 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA. Jesse English pitched one and one-third scoreless innings, giving up no hits. Miguel Batista followed, pitching an inning and two-thirds, getting smoked for five runs on three hits and four walks, while striking out one. Jason Bergmann pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on one hit, the Polanco’s grand-slam. Sean Burnett and Brian Bruney followed with two scorless innings, giving up two hits (one hit apiece) and two walks (both Bruney), while striking out three Phils (Burnett (1), Bruney (2)).

The Phils’ bats went a combine thirteen for thirty-nine today, scoring eleven runs, as well as taking nine bases on balls, with one of them being intentional, and only striking out four times. Placido Planco led the team with three hits, as he knocked in six runs, via a sacrifice fly, a single and a grand-slam home run, starting the season with a .600 batting average. Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard followed with two hits each, with Rollins hits being a lead-off single in the first, and a RBI triple, while scoring two of the Phils’ runs. He also received two walks, while stealing a base in the first inning. Howard, meanwhile, had a single and a two-run home run, knocking in two runs, while scoring one. Chase Utley, Jayson Werth, Raul Ibanez, Shane Victorino, Carlos Ruiz and starter Roy Halladay had the other six Phils’ hits, all singles. Victorino and Halladay would knock in the other two Phils’ RBI. The Phils had a total of twenty-one total bases and three extra-base hits, a triple and two home runs, including a grand-slam. Not bad for a first game. I just hope there’s some left in the tank for Wednesday.

The Phils (1-0) have the day off tomorrow. Their next game will be Wednesday night against the Nationals (0-1) at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. for a 7:05 pm start. The Phils’ starter will be Cole Hamels (0-0, -.–). He will be trying to show that what happened to him in ’09 is now in the past. He will be opposed by Jason Marquis (0-0, -.–), who the Nationals have picked up from the Rockies, who plans on trying to keep the Nats from being an early tennant of the National League Eastern Division cellar. The Phils are off to a good start. The question now is, can they build on it.

Jamie Moyer finally notched career win number 250 as the Phillies defeat the Nationals, 4-2, sweeping the three-games series.

The sixth time is the charm for Jamie Moyer as he finally gets his 250th career victory of his long career, as the Phils hold on to defeat the luckless Nationals, 4-2, completing the sweep of the three-games home stand.

In the first, with one man on, and two men out, Chase Utley hits an RBI double, scoring Shane Victorino, who had earlier walked, to give the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the second as, with two men out, Chris Coste hits a solo home run, his second home of the season, making it a 2-0 Phils’ lead. The Nats would cut the lead in half in the fourth as, with two men out, Josh Willingham hits a solo home run of his own, his eighth home run of the year, making it a 2-1 Phillies’ lead. The Phils would get the run back in their half of the fourth as, with two men on, and one man out, Pedro Feliz would hit into a force out, 6-4, wiping out Jayson Werth, who had earlier walked, at second base, as the Nats’ second baseman, Anderson Hernandez, is unable to get the ball out of his glove to throw to first, allowing Feliz to be safe there, while also allowing Raul Ibanez, who had earlier tripled, to score, giving the Phillies a 3-1 lead. The Nats would cut the lead again in the seventh, as Willingham hits a lead-off home run, his ninth home run of the season, and his second home run of the game, making it a 3-2 Phils’ lead. The Phils would get that run back in the botttom of the inning as, with a man on, and with two men out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI triple, scoring Utley, who had earlier walked, giving the Phils a 4-2 lead. That would be the final score as Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge would together pitch two scoreless frames, with Lidge collecting his twelfth save of the year.

The Phillies starter will be Joe Blanton (3-3, 6.14), who is coming off his best start of the year against the Marliins on May 26, as he went eight strong innings, giving up no runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out a season-high eleven batters, in the Phillies’ 5-3 win. He will be going for his fourth win of the season. He will be opposed by Kevin Correia (1-3, 5.11), who is coming off a lost to the D-backs on May 26, as he pitched five and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out five, in the Padres’ 6-5 lost. Ryan Howard’s two-homer night help rocket the Phils into a 9-6 victory over the Nats, back into first place in the NL East.

Ryan Howard’s two massive home runs, a solo shot and a team record setting grand-slam home run, help leads the Phils to a 9-6 win over the lowly Nationals. The Phils, meanwhile, regain first place from the Mets.

The Nationals took the lead in the second as, with two men on, and one man out, Wil Nieves hits a two run double, knocking in Josh Willingham, who had earlier singled, and had moved up to second on Alberto Gonzalez’s single, and Gonzalez, who had just singled, giving the Nats a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, with Nieves still on second, and now with two men out, Anderson Hernandez hits an RBI single, knocking in Nieves, who beat the throw to the plate, giving the Nats a 3-0 lead, while Hernandez would move up to second on the throw. The Phils would get a run back in their half of the second as Ryan Howard hits a lead-off home run, his thirteenth home run of the year, cutting the Nats’ lead to 3-1. In the third, with a runner on second, and one man out, Jimmy Rollins hits an RBI single, scoring Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier walked, and had moved up to second on Cole Hamels’ sacrifice bunt, making it a 3-2 Nats’ lead. After Rollins stole second base, the Phils loaded the bases on a Shane Victorino walk and a Chase Utley infield single. Ryan Howard then clears them with a 475-ft monster to right for a grand-slam home run, his fourteenth home run of the year, his third grand-salm of the season, and the eighth grand-slam of his career, setting a new franchise record, as he scored Rollins, Victorino and Utley before him, giving the Phils a 6-3 lead. In the fourth, the Nats would get one of the runs back, as, with one man on, and nobody out, Gonzalez hits an RBI triple, knocking in Austin Kearns, who had earlier walked, making it a 6-4 Phils lead. The Phils would get the run back in their half of the inning as, with a runner on second, and one man out, Hamels hits an RBI double, knocking in Ruiz, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 7-4 lead. In the sixth, with a man on, and two men out, pinch hitter Ronnie Belliard hits a pinch hit two-run home run, scoring Kearns, who had earlier singled, had gone to second when Gonzalez was hit by the pitch, and had gone over to third on Nieves’ double play, 5-4-3, wiping out Gonzalez at second, making it 7-6 Phils. The Phils would get those two runs back in their half of the sixth as, with the bases loaded, via a walk to pinch hitter Greg Dobbs, a double by Victorino, which sent Dobbs to third, and a walk to Utley, with two men out, Howard would reach base on a fielding error by second baseman Hernandez, allowing both Dobbs and Victorino to score, and Utley to reach third, as the Phils take a 9-6 lead. That would be the final score as the Phillies’ bullpen shut down the Nats for the final three innings, with Brad Lidge notching his eleventh save of the year as he pitched a scoreless ninth.

Chase Utley, Jayson Werth, Carlos Ruiz and Cole Hamels had the Phils’ other four hits. Besides Howard’s five RBIs, Hamels and Rollins both knocked in a run. The Phils had six extra-base hits, four doubles and two home runs. The Phils also stole five bases, with Utley, Rollins, Victorino, Ruiz and Werth each stealing a base. The win gives the Phils a series win, as they now go for the series sweep against the Nationals.

The Phillies (27-20, 1st) will conclude their three-games home stand with an afternoon game against the Nationals (13-35, 5th) that will be played at Citizens Bank Park. The game will start at 1:35 pm Eastern. He is still looking for his 250th career win, and for his first victory in over a month. The Nationals will counter with John Lannan (2-4, 4.11), who is coming off a lost on May 25 to the Mets, as he pitched five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and four walks, in the Nats’ 5-2 lost. He will be trying to keep the Phils from sweeping the Nats. The Phillies will be trying to leave home with a winning home stand before going back onto the road, where they have the best record in baseball.

Phillies win an extra-innings thriller in Washington as they defeat the Nationals, 10-6.

Thanks to a bunch of walks from Nats pitching and some timely hitting, the Phils are finally able to defeat the Nationals in extra-innings, 10-6, hours after meeting the President inside the White House and hours before a day-night doubleheader.

The Phils took the lead in the second, as, with runners on the corners, and two men out, Carlos Ruiz hits an RBI single, scoring Raul Ibanez, who had earlier singled and had gone to second on Pedro Feliz’s single, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Feliz, who had earlier singled, on to third. The Nats tied the game up at one-all in the third, as, with a runner on second, and one man out, Ryan Zimmerman hits an RBI single off of Chase Utley’s glove, scoring Nick Johnson, who had earlier walked, and had gone to second on Phils’ starter Joe Blanton’s wild pitch, and beat a surprised Utley throw to the plate, while Zimmerman would move up to second on the throw. Later, with the bases loaded, thanks to walks to Adam Dunn and Austin Kearns, and now with two men out, the Nationals took a 2-1 lead as Anderson Hernandez walked, plating Zimmerman, while moving both Dunn and Kearns up a base, leaving the bases loaded. Wil Neaves then made it a 4-1 Nats lead as he hits a two-run single, scoring both Dunn and Kearnes, while sending Hernandez on to third. The Phils would come back in the sixth, as, with two men on, and two men out, Feliz hits an RBI single, scoring Utley, who had earlier been hit by the pitch, and had gone up to second when Ibanez was also hit by a pitch, making it a 4-2 Nats’ lead, while sending Ibanez, who was also hit by a pitch, to third. Ruiz would make it a 4-3 Nats’ lead, as he hits an RBI single, scoring Ibanez, while sending Feliz up to second. The Phils then took the lead in the seventh, as, with two men on, and one out, Ryan Howard hits a three-run home run, his seventh home run of the year, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier walked, stole second, and then moved to third on Shane Victorino’s single, and Victorino, who had just singled. Then in the ninth, the Phils gave the ball to Brad Lidge to close out the game. Sadly, it did not happen, as, with two on, and two men out, Willie Harris hits a two-run double, scoring Zimmerman, who had earlier singled, and had gone on to second on Dunn’s grounder to third, which lead to a force out of Johnson, who had earlier singled, as Feliz touched third base for the inning’s second out, but beating the throw to first, making it a six-all tie. The two teams would be unable to do anything in either the tenth or the eleventh, but the Phils would retake the lead in the twelfth, as, with the bases loaded, via walks to Utley, Howard and Jayson Werth, and one man out, Ibanez hits a two-run single, knocking in Utley and Howard, while moving Werth up to second base, giving the Phils an 8-6 lead. Then, with Feliz batting, Werth and Ibanez performed a double steal, which lead to Werth scoring, making it a 9-6 Phils’ lead, as Nats’ catcher Nieves committed a throwing error to center field while trying to throw out Ibanez at second. Feliz then made it a 10-6 Phils’ lead, as Feliz hits an RBI double, scoring Ibanez. That would end up being the final score, as J.A. Happ would get the win, in spite of having some trouble in the inning.

Joe Blanton received a no-decision as he was only able to pitch five innings, giving up four runs on five hits, six walks and a wild pitch, while striking out five. Chad Durbin followed with a scoreless inning, hitting one batter, while also striking out one. Scott Eyre then recorded his fifth hold, as he pitched two-thirds of an inning. Ryan Madson followed for an inning and a third, recording his sixth hold, striking out one. Jesus Colome pitched to two batters, giving up two runs on one hit and a walk. Joe Beimel blew his second save of the season, giving up a run on three hits and a balk, while striking out one. Julian Tavarez pitched an inning and a third, giving up only one hit and two walks, while striking out a batter. Joel Hanrahan pitched two scoreless innings, giving up only a hit and a walk, while striking out three. Kip Wells took the lost as he pitched an inning, giving up four runs on three hits and four walks, while striking out two. His record is now 0-1 with a 6.06 ERA.

Carlos Ruiz followed with three hits, as he also knocked in two runs. Shane Victorino then followed with two hits, breaking out of his slump. Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard and Chris Coste got the other three Phils’ hits, with Howard’s hit being a three-run home run, while Coste’s was a pinch hit single. The Phils’ bat seems to wake up after Chad Durbin’s hitting of the Nats’ Nick Johnson in the sixth. If so, hopefully the bats will stay awake beyond their series with Washington.

The Phils (17-16, T-2nd) continue there four-games series in Washington with a day-night doubleheader against the Nationals (11-22, 5th). The first game will be played at Nationals Park with a 1:05 pm Eastern start. The Phils will be looking for their second straight win, while improving on their road record.

Phils waste a good performance by their ace as they lose to the Dodgers in extra-innings, 5-3.

The Phillies waste a good performance from the ace, Cole Hamels, as the bullpen is unable to keep the Dodgers down as the Phils lose in extra-innings, 5-3.

The Phils took a quick 1-0 lead in the first, as, with runners on the corners, and one man out, Ryan Howard hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier doubled, and had gone to third on Shane Victorino’s sacrifice bunt. The Dodgers then tied it up at one-all in the third, as, with a runner on second, and two men out, Casey Blake, who had earlier hit a ground-rule double, would score on Rollins’ fielding error of a Rafael Furcal grounder. The game then developed into a pitchers’ duel between Phillies’ starter Cole Hamels and Dodgers’ starter Chad Billingsley. The Dodgers then took the lead in the seventh as James Loney hits a lead-off home run, his second home run of the season, to make it a 2-1 Dodgers’ lead. The Dodgers added an insurance run in the ninth, as, with a runner on third, and one man out, Blake hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Matt Kemp, who had earlier tripled on a play in which Raul Ibanez tried to catch the ball by slding under it, instead of letting it drop in for a single, making it 3-1 Dodgers. The Phils tied it up at three-all in their half of the ninth, as, with two men on, and two outs, Carlos Ruiz hits a two-run double, scoring Ibanez, who had earlier singled, and had gone to second on defensive indifference, and pinch hitter Greg Dobbs, who had just walked. The Phillies (16-16, T-2nd) will be involved in a four-game series with the Nationals (11-21, 5th) in Washington, D.C. The first game of the series will be played tonight at Nationals Park and will begin at 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phils starter will be Joe Blanton (1-3, 6.82) , who is coming off a so-so start against the Braves on May 9, where he went eight innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out five, in the Phillies’ 6-2 lost. Blanton will be trying for his second win, while hoping to improve on his last start. Phils power their way into an easy win, while their ace is injured for the second straight start as he tries to field a bunt.

The Phillies use of the long ball leads to a very easy win, as they defeat the Nationals, 7-1, winning their fifth game in a row, and their first series win at home. During the win, their ace, Cole Hamels, sprained his left ankle trying to field a John Lannan bunt attempt in the fifth inning, thus missing out on getting the win. He expects to make his next start on Monday. We’ll see.

The first two and a half innings of the game involved a pitchers’ duel between Phillies’ ace Cole Hamels and Nationals’ starter John Lannan. That would all change in the bottom of the third, as, with a runner on first, and one man out, Chase Utley hits a two-run home run, his sixth home run of the year, scoring Shane Victorino, who had reached base earlier with a single, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. Four batters later, with two men on, and two men out, Pedro Feliz hits a three-run shot, his second home run of the year, knocking in Jayson Werth, who had earlier reached base on shortstop Alberto Gonzalez’s fielding error, and had moved on to second on Raul Ibanez’s walk, and Ibanez, who had earlier walked, making it a 5-0 Phillies’ lead. In the fifth, with a man on base, and one man out, Hamels moved off the mound to field Lannan’s sacrifice bunt attempt. While trying to field the ball, he rolled over his left ankle, slightly spraining it, as Lannan reached first base safely, credited with a single, while Gonzalez, who had earlier reached base with a single, moved up to second. After being unable to throw off of the mound, an angry Hamels was taken out of the game, with two men on and still only one out, and replaced by Chad Durbin. Durbin then proceeded to get out the next two batters, Ronnie Belliard and Nate Johnson, by fly outs. In the bottom of the inning, the Phils made the score 6-0 as Utley hits a lead-off home run, his seventh home run of the year, and his second home run of the game. In the sixth, the Nationals finally got on the board, as, with one out, Adam Dunn hits a solo home run, his sixth home run of the year. In the eighth, Ibanez made it a 7-1 Phils’ lead as he hits a lead-off home run, his seventh home run of the year. That would end up being the final score as Clay Condrey pitched a scoreless ninth.

Cole Hamels received a no-decision as he was taken out of the game in the fifth inning, after spraining his left ankle while trying to field a bunt attempt. Before that had occurred, he was pitching a superb game, giving up no runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out four, in four and a third innings of work. Chad Durbin got the win as he pitched three and two-thirds strong innings of relief for Hamels, giving up just one run on one hit, as he struck out two. His record is now 1-0 with a 4.97 ERA. Clay Condrey pitched a scoreless inning, giving up just a hit. John Lannan took the lost, as he pitched five innings, giving up six runs, only three of which were earned, on nine hits and a walk, while he struck out three. His record is now 0-3 with a 4.61 ERA. Jason Bergmann pitched a scoreless inning, giving up just one hit, while striking out a batter. Saul Rivera pitched two innings, giving up a run on one hit, while striking out two.

The Phillies had eleven hits in the game, with Chase Utley leading the way with three hits, a single and two home runs, knocking in three runs and scoring twice, as he raised his batting average to .357. Shane Victorino, Raul Ibanez and Pedro Feliz then followed with two hits apiece, with one of Ibanez’s hits and one of Feliz’s being home runs. Utley and Ibanez are now among the league leaders in home runs with seven home runs each, tying them with Albert Pujols of the Cardinals, Andre Ethier of the Dodgers and Joey Votto of the Reds. Jimmy Rollins and Chris Coste had the other two Phillies’ hits. Besides Utley’s three RBIs, Feliz had three RBIs and Ibanez one.

The Phillies (11-8, 2nd) conclude their three-games series with the Nationals (4-15, 5th) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park with game time being 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phillies’ starter will be Brett Myers (1-1, 4.91), who is coming off a no-decision against the Marlins on April 24, when he pitched sixth strong innings, giving up only three runs on eight hits and six walks, while striking out five, in the Phillies’ dramatic 7-3 come-from-behind win. He will be trying for his second win of the year and his first start without giving up a home run. He will be opposed by Scott Olsen (0-3, 7.29), who is coming a lost against the Mets, also on April 24, in which he pitched six innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and two walks, as he struck out four, in the Nationals’ 4-3 lost. He will be trying for his first win of the year. The Phillies hope to win their sixth game in the row, and hope to take over first place, before they get ready to host the Mets this upcoming weekend.
