The Phils defeat the Brewers after a five-run offensive explosion in the top of the second, before hanging on to win, beating the Brew Crew 9-7.
The Phils took the lead in the top of the first as, with a runner on third, and with one man on, Chase Utley hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Ben Revere, who had started the game off with a single, moved up to second base on pitcher Wily Peralta’s wild pitch, then went to third base on Jimmy Rollins’ ground out, three-unassisted, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Brewers tied the game up at one-all in their half of the first as, with one man out, Scotter Gennett hits a solo home run, his seventh home run of the season. The Brewers took the lead four batters later as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Jonathan Lucroy, and then walks to first Aramis Ramirez and then Khris Davis, and with one man still out, Lyle Overbay hits a grand-slam home run, his fourth home run of the season, knocking in Lucroy, Ramirez and Davis, giving the Brewers a 5-1 lead. The Phils got a run back in the top of the second as, with the bases loaded, via a lead-off single by Marlon Byrd, a single by Cody Asche, sending Byrd up to second base, and a walk to Dom Brown, moving up both runners, and with nobody out, Koyle Hill hits an RBI infield single, scoring Byrd, making it a 5-2 Brewers’ lead, while moving both Asche and Brown up a base, leaving the bases loaded. After Kyle Kendrick had hit into a force play at the plate, 1-2, for the inning’s first out, forcing out Asche as catcher Lucroy touch home plate, as Brown and Hill both moved up a base, while Kendrick would be safe at first, the Phils made it a 5-4 Brewers’ lead as Revere hits a ground-rule double, knocking in both Brown and Hill, while sending Kendrick all the way to third base. The Phils then took the lead two batters later, after Rollins had walked to reload the bases, as Utley hits a two-run single, knocking in Kendrick and Revere. giving the Phils a 6-5 lead, while sending Rollins up to second base. The Phils increased their lead in the top of the third as, with one man out, Brown hits a solo home run, his sixth home run of the year, giving the Phils a 7-5 lead. The Phils then made it a 9-5 lead in the top of the fifth as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Brown hits a two-run single, knocking in Ryan Howard, who had started the inning off with a walk, then stopped at third base on Asche’s double, and Asche, who had just doubled. The Brewers cut the Phils’ lead down to 9-7 as, with one man on, and with one man out, pinch-hitter Mark Reynolds hits a two-run home run, his fourteenth home run of the season, scoring Logan Schafer, who had just singled. That would end up being the final score as Jonathan Papelbon collected his twenty-first save of the season as he threw a 1-2-3 ninth, getting Overbay to ground out, 6-3, for the game’s final out.
Kyle Kendrick (4-8, 4.46) got the win as he pitched five and two-thirds innings, giving up seven runs on eleven hits and two walks, while striking out two. Justin De Fratus collected his second hold of the season as he went two-thirds of an inning, getting out both men whom he would face. Jake Diekman received his twelfth hold of the season as he also went two-thirds of an inning, striking out both men whom he would face. Ken Giles received his second hold of the season as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits. Jonathan Papelbon collected his twenty-first save of the season as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Wily Peralta (9-6, 3.95) took the lost as he pitched four and one-third innings, giving up nine runs on eight hits, three walks and a wild pitch, while striking out four. Tom Gorzelanny, Brandon Kintzler, Zach Duke, Wei-Chung Wang and Francisco Rodriguez combined for four and two-thirds scoreless innings, giving up two hits (Gorzelanny (1), Rodriguez (1)) between them, while striking out three Phils (Kintzler (1), Wang (1), Rodriguez (1)).
The Phils had ten hits in the game, with Ben Revere (Single, Double, 2 RBIs), Chase Utley (Singles, 3 RBIs), Cody Asche (Single, Double) and Dom Brown (Single, Home Run, 3 RBIs) all leading the team with two hits each. Marlon Byrd and Koyle Hill (RBI) had the last two Phils’ hits, both singles. The Phils also had three walks (Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Brown), two stolen bases (Rollins (17), Utley (3)) and a sacrifice fly (Utley) in the game.
The Phils (39-51, 5th NL East) continue their series with the Brewers (52-39, 1st Central) with a ballgame tonight. The game is to start at 8:10 pm EDT (7:10 pm CDT) at Miller Park. The Phils plan to send to the mound Roberto Hernandez (3-8, 4.48), who is coming off a lost against the Pirates on July 4, as he went five and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on ten hits and four walks, while striking out three, in the Phils’ 8-2 lost. Hernandez will be trying to increase the Phils’ present winning streak to three games. The Brewers will counter with Kyle Lohse (9-3, 3.18), who is coming off a lost against the Reds on July 4, as he threw five innings, giving up four runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits and a walk, while striking out eight, in the Brewers’ 4-2 lost. He will once again be going for his tenth win of the year. The Phils will be trying for their third straight win against the Brewers.
