The Braves took the lead two batters later as, now with runners on the corners, after Paul Janish’s walk, and with still two men out, Tim Hudson helped his own cause by hitting a two-run double, knocking in both Uggla and Janish, giving the Braves a 3-1 lead. The Phils then cut it down to a 6-3 Braves’ lead as Dom Brown followed with a double of his own, scoring Rollins. Two batters later, after Chase Utley is hit by a pitch, the Phils’ tied the score at six-all as Ryan Howard hits a three-run blast, his sixth home run of the season, knocking in Brown and Utley. The Braves regain the lead in the seventh as, with the bases loaded, via a double by Jason Heyward, an intentional walk to Chipper Jones and a walk to Freeman, moving up the runners, and with two men out, Uggla hits a bases clearing double, scoring Heyward, Jones and Freeman, giving the Braves a 9-6 lead. The Braves then made it a 10-6 lead as Uggla scored on third baseman Frandsen’s throwing error to first of Ross’ grounder. The Braves increased their lead in the eighth as, with a man on first, and with nobody out, Bourn hits an RBI double, knocking in pinch hitter Tyler Pastornicky, who had started the inning off with a walk, giving the Braves an 11-6 lead. The Braves then took a 12-6 lead three batters later as, with the bases loaded, after Prado walks, Bourn then moving up to third on Heyward’s fly out to center field for the inning’s first out and Jones intentionally walked for the second time in the game, and with one man out, Freeman hits an RBI ground out, 1-3, scoring Bourn, on a ball that pitcher Jeremy Horst could have turned into a 1-2-3 doubleplay if he had caught the ball cleanly. That would end up being the final score as Craig Kimbrel threw a 1-2-3 ninth.

Luis Avilan pitched a third of an inning, getting out the one man whom he would face. Cory Gearrin also pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only batter whom he would face. Chad Durbin (4-1, 3.07) would get the win as he threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Jonny Venters, Eric O’Flaherty and Craig Kimbrel combined for three scoreless innings, giving up a hit (O’Flaherty) and a walk (O’Flaherty), while striking out five (Venters (1), O’Flaherty (2), Kimbrel (2)).

That would turn out to be more than enough for Cole Hamels, as he threw a complete game shutout, the fifth of his career, allowing only five hits, all singles, to the Braves: a lead-off single to Chipper Jones in the second, who is, two batters latter, wiped out at second base for the inning’s second out, on a 4-6-3 doubleplay ball hit by Brian McCann; a two-out single in the fifth by McCann, who is thrown out at second base, 8-4, trying to stretch it into a double, by a strong throw by left fielder Brown as second baseman Chase Utley applies the tag; a lead-off bunt single in the seventh by Michael Bourn, who is then left stranded at first base; a lead-off single in the eighth by Freddie Freeman , who is, two batters later, wiped out at second base for the inning’s second out, on a 6-4-3 doubleplay ball hit by Reed Johnson and a one-out single in the ninth by pinch hitter Tyler Pastornicky, before Hamels ended the game two batters later by getting Martin Prado to ground out, 6-3, for the final out.

The D-backs increased their lead in the fourth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Paul Goldschmidt hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Aaron Hill, who had started the inning off with a double, then moved up to third base on Jason Kubel’s fly out to center field, giving the D-backs a 2-0 lead. Three batters later, the D-backs made it a 3-0 lead as, with runners on the corners, and with still two men out, Chris Johnson hits an RBI single, knocking in Upton, who had earlier singled, moved up to second base on Miguel Montero’s infield single, before moving up to third on shortstop Jimmy Rollins’ fielding error on the play, while sending Montero, who had reached base on an infield single, would move up to second base. Putz picked up his twentieth save of the season as he threw a 1-2-3 ninth.

Kyle Kendrick (4-9, 4.45), who was starting in place of Joe Blanton, who had been traded to the Dodgers earlier yesterday, took the lost as he pitched four innings, giving up three runs, only two of which were earned, on five hits, while he struck out two. Jeremy Horst, B.J. Rosenberg and Antonio Bastardo combined for four scoreless innings, giving up just a walk (Horst) between them, while striking out five (Horst (1), Rosenberg (3), Bastardo (1)). Josh Lindblom pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit, while striking out a batter. Ian Kennedy (10-8, 4.15) got the win as he pitched six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks, as he struck out a batter. Takashi Saito collected his second h0ld of the year as he threw a 1-2-3 inning. David Hernandez collected his fifteenth hold of the season as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk, while striking out a batter. J.J Putz received his twentieth save of the year as he threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter.
