A fourteen-hit attack supports a five-hit effort by team ace Roy Halladay, as the Phils defeated the Marlins, 7-1.

The Phils explodes for seven runs in support of a five-hit effort by their ace Roy Halladay, as they defeated the Marlins, 7-1.

The Marlins took the lead in the second as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Josh Johnson hits an RBI ground out, 4-3, knocking in Omar Infante, who had earlier doubled, then moved up to third base on John Buck’s fly out to right, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead. The Phils tied the game up at one-all in the third as, with a man on second, and with one man out, Juan Pierre, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, would score on Placido Polanco’s RBI infield single to shortstop, after having first been deflected by Johnson, beating the throw to the plate, while Polanco would move up to second base on the throw home. The Phils took the lead one batter later as Jimmy Rollins hits an RBI single, scoring Polanco, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while Rollins would move up to second base on a fielding error by left fielder Logan Morrison. The Phils then made it a 3-1 lead as Hunter Pence hits an RBI single, knocking in Rollins, before he moved up to second base on the throw to the plate.  Three batters later, with the bases loaded, via a single by Shane Victorino, which sent Pence on to third base, before he stole second base, and an intentional walk to Carlos Ruiz, and with two men out, Freddy Galvis hits a two-run double, scoring both Pence and Victornio, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead, while sending Ruiz on to third base. The Phils then made it a 6-1 lead in the fourth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Victorino hits an RBI single, scoring Rollins, who had earlier singled, then stopped at second base on Pence’s single, while sending Pence, who had earlier singled, on to second base. The Phils added to their lead in the seventh as, with one man out, Ruiz hits a solo home run, his first home run of the season, giving the Phils a 7-1 lead. That would end being the final score as Gaby Sanchez flied out to center for the game’s final out.

Roy Halladay (2-0, 0.80) got the win as he pitched seven strong innings, giving up a run on five hits and a walk, while he struck out three. Chad Qualls and Michael Stutes combined for two 1-2-3 innings. Josh Johnson (0-2, 8.38) took the lost as he went just three and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on eleven hits and a walk, while he struck out a batter. Chad Gaudin pitched two and one-third scoreless innings, giving up two hits, while striking out two. Ryan Webb pitched two innings, giving up a run on a hit, as he struck out one.

The Phils erupted for fourteen hits in the ballgame, with Hunter Pence leading the team with three hits, all singles, knocking in a run, followed by Placido Polanco (Singles, RBI), Jimmy Rollins (Singles, RBI), Shane Victorino (Singles, RBI) and Carlos Ruiz (Double, Home Run, RBI) with two hits apiece. Juan Pierre (Single), John Mayberry, Jr. (Single) and Freddy Galvis (Double, 2 RBIs) had the other three Phils’ hits. The Phils also had a walk and three stolen bases (Pierre, Victorino (2)) in the ballgame.

The Phils (2-3, 3rd) will conclude their series with the Marlins (2-4, 4th) with a night game tomorrow night. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park, with a start time of 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Joe Blanton (0-1, 13.50), who is coming off a lost in relief against the Pirates on April 7, as he went two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on two-hits, in the Phils’ 2-1 ninth-inning lost. Joe hopes that he will do better in his first start of the season. The Marlins will counter with Mark Buehrle (0-1, 3.00), who is coming off a lost against the Reds on April 5, as he went six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks, while he struck out six, in the Marlins’ 4-0 lost. He will be trying to do better in his second National League start. The Phils will be out to even their record, and win their first series in the young season.
