After seeming to regain his 2007-2008 form, Cole Hamels version 2009 comes back as he is torched for six runs on four home runs in two innings as the D-backs go on to defeat the Phils, 7-4.

The Phils took the lead in the third as, with a runner on second, and with no one out, Shane Victorino hits an RBI triple, scoring Cole Hamels, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, the Phils made it 2-0 as, with one man out, Jayson Werth scores a run on a four-base error as Chris Young, after making the catch in center field, drops the ball while trying to make the transfer to his bare hand. The roof then fell in the D-backs’ half of the fourth as Hamel, who had been cruising through the D-backs line-up in the first three innings, with one man on, and with one man out, gives up the first of four home runs to the D-backs as Mark Reynolds hits a two-run home run, his sixth home run of the season, scoring Justin Upton, who had earlier singled, tying the game up at two-all. One batter later, the D-backs took the lead, 3-2, as Adam LaRoche hits a solo home run, his first home run of the year. Three batters later, with one man on, and now with two men out, Hamels gives up his third home run of the inning as Chris Snyder hits a two-run home run, his second home run of the season, knocking in Young, who had earlier singled, giving the D-backs a 5-2 lead. The D-backs made it a 6-2 lead in the fifth as Kelly Johnson hits a lead-off home run, the fourth one given up by Hamels, his fourth home run of the season. The Phils got a run back in the seventh as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, scoring Brian Schneider, who had earlier singled, moved up to second on pinch hitter Ross Gload’s single, then went to third on Victorino’s force out, 4-6, wiping out Gload at second, while Victorino was safe at first, making it a 6-3 D-backs’ lead, while Victorino, who had reached first on the 4-6 force out, moved up to second base. The D-backs would get that run back in their half of the seventh as Johnson hit a lead-off home run, his fifth home of the season, and the fifth home run hit in the game by the D-backs, making it a 7-3 D-backs’ lead. The Phils would make it 7-4 D-backs in the ninth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Victorino hits an RBI single, knocking in pinch hitter Raul Ibanez, who had earlier walked, and moved up to second on defensive indifference. But that would be the final score as the next batter, Polanco, after Victorino had stolen second base, putting himself in scoring position, grounded out, 3-unassisted, to end the game.

Cole Hamels took the lost, as he pitches six innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out seven. His record is now 2-2 with an ERA of 5.11. J.C. Romero, pitching in his first game since returning from injury, faced two batters, giving up a hit, a home run, and a walk, getting neither man out. Jose Contreras pitches a scoreless inning, striking out three. David Herndon also pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk. Kris Benson took the win, as he pitches six innings, giving up three runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits, as he strikes out five. His record is now 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA. Leo Rosales records his second hold of the year as he pitches a scoreless inning, striking out a batter. Juan Gutierrez also pitches a scoreless inning, striking out a batter. Aaron Heilman pitches two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on one hit and a walk, while striking out a batter. Chad Qualls records his third save of the year, as he gets out the only man he would face.

The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Shane Victorino and Ben Francisco leading the team with two hits apiece, with Victorino’s hits being a single and a triple, knocking in two of the Phils’ run, while Francisco’s hits were singles. Placido Polanco, Jayson Werth, Brian Schneider, pinch hitter Ross Gload and Cole Hamels had the other five Phils’ hits, with Hamels’ hit being a double, while Polanco knocked in the other Phil RBI, with a ground out.

The Phils (10-6, 1st East) continue their three-game series with the D-backs (7-9, 5th West) in Phoenix. The game will be played at Chase Field and will begin at 8:10 pm Eastern (5:10 pm Mountain). The Phils will send to the mound Nelson Figueroa (1-1, 2.45), who is starting for the injured J.A. Happ, who last pitched on April 17 in relief against the Marlins, pitching two scoreless innings, giving up just a walk, while striking out a batter, in the Phils’ 5-1 lost. He will be trying to even up the series for the Phils, while hopefully giving them five to six good innings. The D-backs will counter with Ian Kennedy (0-1, 5.65), who is coming off a no-decision against the Padres on April 18, as he gave only two hits and three walks, as he struck out seven, in the D-backs’ 5-3 lost. He will be trying to get his first victory of the season. The Phils will be trying to bounce back from last night’s lost to even up the series.

Blanton, Howard, Werth and company crushed the D-backs, 12-3, on way to a series sweep, before they head on north to face a weaken Mets club.

Massive home runs off of the bats of Jayson Werth and Ryan Howard and a strong pitching performance by Joe Blanton help lead the Phils to a sweep of the D-backs, as they defeated Arizona 12-3. The Phils, with the Marlins’ lost to the Astros, now hold a six-and-a-half games lead over both the fish and the Braves, as they head north to face a weaken Mets team for four games, and without having to face their major nemesis Johan Santana.

The Phils took an early lead in the first inning as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI double, knocking in Shane Victorino, who had earlier tripled, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Chase Utley, who had just walked, over to third base. Two batters later, with two men still on base, and now with two outs, Ben Francisco hits an RBI single, scoring both Utley and Howard, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. The D-backs got a run back in the second as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Alex Romero hits an RBI single, scoring Mark Reynolds, who had earlier singled, had moved up to second on Chad Tracy’s single, and had then gone to third on Trent Oeltjen’s force out, 4-6, wiping out Tracy at second, making it a 3-1 Phils’ lead, while sending Oeltjen, who was safe at first on the force out, to go to third. The D-backs would make it 3-2 Phils in the fourth as, with a man on second and with nobody out, Miguel Montero hits an RBI double, knocking in Reynolds, who had earlier singled. The next batter, Tracy, would knock in Montero, tying the ballgame at three-all. The Phils would regain the lead in their half of the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Jayson Werth, who then reached second safely on a throwing error by D-backs’ third baseman Reynolds on a Francisco ground ball, and a walk to Carlos Ruiz, moving Werth up to third and Francisco over to second, with one man out, as Phils’ starter Joe Blanton hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, for the inning’s second out, as he brought home Werth to give the Phils’ a 4-3 lead. The Phils added to their lead in the fifth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Jayson Werth hits a two-run home run, his twenty-eighth home run of the season, knocking in Howard, who had earlier walked, making it a 6-3 Phils’ lead. The Phils then proceeded to break the game wide open in the sixth as Carlos Ruiz lead off the inning with a home run, his seventh home run of the year, giving the Phils a 7-3 lead. Four batters later, with two men on, and with one man out, Utley hits an RBI single, scoring Blanton, who had earlier singled, and had gone to second on Jimmy Rollins’ single, making it 8-3 Phils, while sending Rollins, who had earlier singled, over to third, while Utley would go to second base on the throw. The Phils then made 11-3 as Howard would hit a three-run bomb into the visitor’s bullpen in center field, his thirty-second home run of the season, knocking in both Rollins and Utley. The Phils would then make it 12-3 in the seventh as, with the bases loaded via a walk to Carlos Ruiz, a single by Blanton and an infield single by Rollins, and with nobody out, Victorino hits into an RBI force out, scoring Ruiz as Blanton was out at third base, 5-unassisted, while Rollins was safe at second and Victorino was safe at first. That would be the final score as Chad Durbin pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Joe Blanton got the victory as he pitched eight strong innings, giving up three runs on ten hits, while striking out four batters. His record is now 8-6 with an ERA of 3.86. Chad Durbin pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out a batter. Doug Davis took the lost as he went five innings, giving up six runs, five of which were earned, on five hits and four walks, as he struck out six. His record is now 7-11 with a 3.77 ERA. Leo Rosales pitched a third of an inning, giving up three runs on three hits. Daniel Schlereth pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk. Esmerling Vasquez pitched an inning and a third, giving up a run on two hits and a walk. Chad Qualls pitched two-thirds of an inning, getting out both men whom he would face, striking out one.

The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and, surprise, Joe Blanton, leading the team with two hits each, with one of Howard’s hits being a double and the other one being a three-run blast, knocking in four of the Phils’ runs, while one of Werth’s two hits was a two-run home run, as he knocked in two runs. Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, Ben Francisco and Carlos Ruiz had the other four Phils’ hit, with Victorino hitting a triple and Ruiz hitting a solo home run. Besides Howard’s four RBIs, Werth’s two and Ruiz’s one, Victorino knocked in a run on a force out, Utley would knock in one, Francisco would knock in two runs and Blanton would bring home one with a ground out. The Phils this time were able to score as many runs as they had hits in the ballgame, this time taking advantage of their scoring opportunities.

The Phillies (69-49, 1st) will now go to New York to face the Mets (56-65, 4th) for a four games series, starting with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citi Field and will start at 7:10 pm Eastern. The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (7-7, 4.69), who is coming off a no-decision against the Braves on August 15, where he went six innings, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks, while striking out two, in the Phils’ 4-3 lost. He will be trying to get his stuff back. The Mets will counter with Mike Pelfrey (8-8, 4.75), who is coming off a no-decision of his own against the Giants on August 16, as he went seven and a third innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out five, in the Mets’ 3-2 win. He will be trying for his ninth win of the season. The Phillies will be trying to bury the Mets even lower in the standings, while at the same time trying to put some more distance between themselves and both the Braves and the Marlins, as the later two teams face each other for three games in Atlanta.

Cliff Lee dominates as he throws a two-hitter against the D-backs, going 4-0 in four starts since being traded to the Phils.

For the fourth time in as many start, Cliff Lee dominates the opposing batters, this time by pitching a complete game two-hitter, as he allowed in only an unearned run, as the Phils defeat the D-backs, 8-1. They increase their lead over the Marlins to five-and-a-half games as the fish lose to the Astros.

The Phils took the lead in the third as, with a runner on first, and with one out, Chase Utley hits a two-run home run to center field, his twenty-fifth home run of the season, scoring ahead of him Shane Victorino, who had just walked, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The D-backs would cut the Phils’ lead in half in the fourth as, with a man on third base, and with one man out, Stephen Drew hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Ryan Roberts, who had earlier reached base on a Pedro Feliz fielding error as he misplayed the ball, going to second on the error, then reaching third on Augie Ojeda’s ground out, 4-3, making it 2-1 Phils. That would turn out to be as much offense as the D-backs will be able to mustard. In the fifth, the Phils would bust the game wide open as, with two men on, and with one man out, Ryan Howard hit a three-run bomb into left center field, his thirty-first home run of the year, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier double, and had gone to third on Victorino’s single, and Victorino, who had earlier singled, to give the Phils a 5-1 lead. The Phils then made it 6-1 as Jayson Werth followed Howard with a solo home run, his twenty-sixth home run of the season. In the top of the sixth, with one man out, pinch hitter Chad Tracy got on base with a pinch hit single, ending Lee’s no-hit bit at five and a third innings, before being stranded at first as the next two D-back hitters flew out to right (Roberts) and struck out looking (Ojeda). The Phils would increase their lead to 7-1 in the bottom half of the inning as, with a man on second, and with two men out, Victorino hits an RBI double, scoring Lee, who had earlier got on base with a single, and then went to second on a wild pitch. In the seventh, the Phils added another run as, with one man out, Werth hits a solo home run, his second of the night and his twenty-seventh home run of the year, making it an 8-1 Phils’ lead. That would be more than enough for Lee, as he would only allow two more base runners after giving up the single, a hit batter in the top of the seventh (Rusty Ryal) and a single in the eighth (Alex Romero), mowing down the D-backs in the ninth inning with a fly out to right (Josh Whitesell), a fly out to left (Drew) and a strike out swinging (Mark Reynolds), as he recorded a two-hitter, and his fourth straight victory since becoming a Phil and his seventh straight win in his last seven starts.

Cliff Lee picked up the win as he pitched a complete game, his second since joining the Phils, as he gave up an unearned run on two hits and a hit batter, while striking out eleven batters, tying a career high. His record is now 11-9 (4-0) with an ERA of 2.72 (0.82). Dan Haren took the lost as he lasted only five innings, giving up six runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out six. His record is now 12-8 with a 2.74 ERA. Clay Zavada pitched one and a third innings, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out two. Juan Gutierrez pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on one hit, while he struck out one. Blaine Boyer pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, as he struck out a batter.

The Phils had thirteen hits in the game, with Jayson Werth leading the way with three hits, with two of his hits being solo home runs, raising his average to .267. Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, and yes, Cliff Lee, followed with two hits apiece, with one of Shane’s hits being an RBI double, while one of Utley’s hits was a two-run home run. Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Raul Ibanez and Paul Boko had the other four Phils’ hits, with Rollins’ being a double, and Howard’s being a three-run bomb which broke the game wide open. All but one of the Phils’ run came via the long ball, something the Phils do very well, but they will need to rely on less if they hope to win their second straight league title and world series championship.

The Phillies (68-49, 1st National League East) will conclude their short home stand with the Diamondbacks (54-67, 4th National League West) with a night game. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05 pm. The Phils will send to the mound Joe Blanton (7-6, 3.88), who is coming off a no-decision against the Braves on August 14, where he pitched seven innings, giving up just two runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits and a walk, while striking out two, in the Phils’ 3-2 win. He will be trying for his first win in about a month, while also going for the series sweep. He will be opposed by Doug Davis (7-10, 3.59), who is coming off a no-decision of his own against the Dodgers on August 15, as he went six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out two, in the D-backs’ 4-3 win. He will be trying to prevent the sweep. The Phils will be trying to end the short home stand on a positive note, before going onto the road to face the hurting Mets for four games, and then the lowly Pirates for three, with a good chance to increase their lead in the East over the Marlins by the time they come back home.

Cole Hamels dominate as the Phils win another series on the road as they defeat the D-backs, 4-3.

Cole Hamels appears to have returned to his dominate form as he four hits the D-backs as the Phils’ offense score enough runs to defeat the Diamondbacks, 4-3.

The D-backs took the lead in the first as, with one man out, Ryan Roberts hits a solo home run, his second home run of the season, as the D-backs took a 1-0 lead. The Phils would tie it up at one-all in the third as, with two men out, Shane Victorino hits a solo home run of his own, his eighth home run of the year. The Phils took the lead in the fifth as, with two men on, and one man out, Victorino hits a ground-rule double, knocking in Hamels, who had earlier doubled, and gone to third on D-back shortstop Stephen Drew’s fielding error of a Jimmy Rollins ground ball, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while Rollins, who was earlier safe on an error, moved up to third. The Phils would then take a 3-1 lead as Chase Utley hits a fielder’s choice ground ball to D-back’s first baseman Chad Tracy, who threw the ball away while trying to get Rollins out at home plate, allowing Rollins to score and Victorino to reach third, while Utley was safe at first. The Phils made it 4-1 in the seventh as, with the bases loaded, via a single to Victorino, Utley being hit by the pitch, moving Victorino up to second, a double steal to third and second by Victorino and Utley, and a walk to Raul Ibanez, and one man out, Jayson Werth hit into a force out, 6-4, forcing out Ibanez at second for the inning’s second out, as Victorino scored and Utley moved up to third. Meantime, Hamels would dominate the D-backs, giving up only three more hits, as he struck out nine D-backs, in eight strong innings of work. The D-backs cut it close in the ninth as, with a man on, and nobody out, Mark Reynolds hits a two-run home run, knocking in Justin Upton, who had earlier walked, and then stole second, making it 4-3 Phils. But that would be it as Brad Lidge would buckle down, and get out the next three batters for his twentieth save of the season.

Hamels got the win as he pitched eight quality innings, giving up just one run on four hits, while striking out nine. His record is now 7-5 with an ERA of 4.42. Brad Lidge recorded his twentieth save as he pitched one inning, giving up two runs on a hit and a walk. Dan Haren received the lost as he pitched five innings, giving up three runs, two of which were earned, on four hits and three walks, as he struck out five, His record is now 10-6 with a 2.19 ERA. Clay Zavada pitched a scoreless inning, only giving up a walk. Scott Schoeneweis pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on one hit and a walk, as he struck out a batter. Juan Gutierrez pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings, striking out two. Chad Qualls pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two walks, while striking out one.

The Phils had only seven hits in the game, with Shane Victornio having three hits, as he was a triple short of hitting the cycle, as he raised his batting average to .319, knocking in two runs. Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Cole Hamels had the other four Phils’ hits, with Hamels’ hit being a double. Jayson Werth knocked in the other Phils’ run with a force out. The Phils have won another road series, as their lead in the NL East stay at seven games as the Marlins defeat the Braves.

The Phillies (58-40, 1st National League East) will conclude their three-games series with the D-backs (43-58, 4th National League West) with a night game. The game will be play at Chase Field and will start at 9:40 pm Eastern (6:40 pm Mountain). The Phils’s starter will be J.A. Happ (7-1, 2.97), who is coming off his first career lost against the Cardinals on July 24, as he went six innings, giving up five runs on ten hits, as he struck out six, in the Phils’ 8-1 lost. He will be trying to get back on the horse while trying to help the Phils sweep the D-backs. The D-backs will counter with Yusmeiro Petit (0-5, 7.68), who is coming off a lost against the Pirates on July 24, as he pitched four and a third innings, giving up six runs on nine hits and a walk, while he struck out six. He will be trying to help the D-backs avoid a sweep. The Phils will be trying to end the series in Phoenix with a sweep before heading on to San Francisco for four games with the Giants.
