The Phils tied the game up at one-all in the third as, with a man on second, and with one man out, Juan Pierre, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, would score on Placido Polanco’s RBI infield single to shortstop, after having first been deflected by Johnson, beating the throw to the plate, while Polanco would move up to second base on the throw home. The Phils took the lead one batter later as Jimmy Rollins hits an RBI single, scoring Polanco, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while Rollins would move up to second base on a fielding error by left fielder Logan Morrison. The Phils then made it a 3-1 lead as Hunter Pence hits an RBI single, knocking in Rollins, before he moved up to second base on the throw to the plate. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, via a single by Shane Victorino, which sent Pence on to third base, before he stole second base, and an intentional walk to Carlos Ruiz, and with two men out, Freddy Galvis hits a two-run double, scoring both Pence and Victornio, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead, while sending Ruiz on to third base. The Phils then made it a 6-1 lead in the fourth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Victorino hits an RBI single, scoring Rollins, who had earlier singled, then stopped at second base on Pence’s single, while sending Pence, who had earlier singled, on to second base. The Phils added to their lead in the seventh as, with one man out, Ruiz hits a solo home run, his first home run of the season, giving the Phils a 7-1 lead. That would end being the final score as Gaby Sanchez flied out to center for the game’s final out.

Chad Qualls and Michael Stutes combined for two 1-2-3 innings. Josh Johnson (0-2, 8.38) took the lost as he went just three and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on eleven hits and a walk, while he struck out a batter. Chad Gaudin pitched two and one-third scoreless innings, giving up two hits, while striking out two. Ryan Webb pitched two innings, giving up a run on a hit, as he struck out one.

The Phils will be out to generate some offense behind their ace Roy Halladay to get their first win at home, while hoping that he will keep the fish off of the scoreboard, as he did last Thursday against the Pirates, so that the Phils can obtain their second victory of the young season, their first at home. Halladay will be hoping that the offense, which has been effectively using small ball, will now start getting some clutch hits to go along with it. They also hope that the Marlins will be a bit distracted as their manager Ozzie Guillen faces a five-day suspension after making a comment about former Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

He pitched in 32 games, all but one of them as a starter, throwing a total of 216 innings, in which he struck out 184 batters, while walking only 44. Cole will be trying to continue where he left off last year, while trying to end the Phils present losing streak. The Marlins will counter with Anibal Sanchez (0-0, -.–), who is coming off a 2011 season with a record of 8-9, with a 3.67 ERA and a WHIP of 1.28. Sanchez started in 32 games, for a total of 196.1 innings, striking out 202 batters, while walking just 64. He will be trying to stop the Marlins early slide. The Phils will be trying to end their first losing slide, after spoiling two straight quality starts with so-so offense.

Lee pitched in 32 games, all starts, for a total of 232.2 innings, in which he struck out 238 batters, while walking only 42. Lee will be out to see if he can lead the Phils to a 2-0 start on the season while trying to collect his first win of 2012. The Pirates will try to counter with Jeff Karstens (0-0, -.–) who had ended the 2011 season with a 9-9 record, with a 3.38 ERA and a WHIP of 1.21. Karstens appeared in 30 games, 26 of which were starts, in which he threw a total of 162.1 innings, striking out just 96 batters, while walking 33. Karstens will be trying to see if he can even up the series at a game apiece.
The second of the final two games of the three game set will be an Sunday afternoon game, with a start time of 1:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Vance Worley (0-0, -.–), who will be in his second full season as a Phil, as he is coming off a 2011 campaign with a record of 11-3, with a 3.01 ERA and a WHIP of 1.23, as he appeared in 25 games, 21 of which were starts, as he accumulated a total of 131.2 innings, striking out 119 batters, while walking only 50. Worley will be trying to prove that he had deserved his third place showing in the 2011 National League Rookie of the Year balloting. The Pirates will send to the mound James McDonald (0-0, -.–), who in 2011 had a record of 9-9 with an ERA of 4.21, as he had 31 starts, totaling 171 innings, as he struck out 142 batters, while walking 78. He will be out to show that he can pitch better than his record would show.
The Phils will be out to win at least one of these two games, to leave Pittsburgh with a winning record, before starting their opening home stand with a three-game series with the Miami (formerly Florida) Marlins.
Juan Pierre have just signed a minor-league contract with the Phils.
Earlier today, the Phils have announced that they had signed outfielder Juan Pierre to a minor league contract and have invited him to Spring Training.
Pierre, who was playing left field for the Chicago White Sox in 2011, would appear in 158 games for the pale socks last season, batting .279 (178-639), getting 17 doubles, four triples and two home runs, knocking in 50 RBIs, while scoring 80. He would also steal 27 bases, while being caught only 17 times. During a 12-years career, during which he would also play for the Rockies, the Florida Marlins, the Cubs and the Dodgers, he would compile a career .296 batting average (2020-6823), playing in 1751 games, as he got 234 doubles, 86 triples and 16 home runs, scoring 980 times, while knocking in 484 RBIs. He would also have 554 stolen bases, while being caught just 190 times.
Pierre will be trying to become the team’s fifth outfielder, who will probably be used mainly as a late-inning baserunning threat, which should put some pressure on the defense late in games, as well as a pinch hitter. Pierre is suppose to have good bat control and be able to bunt. He was also a good lead-off hitter while he was with the White Sox, which should come in handy if Jimmy Rollins gets injured at some point during the season.

The Phils have signed two more players to minor league deals, offering non-roster spring training invites to both.
Yesterday, the Phils sent out a press release announcing that they have signed two more players to minor league deals, offering spring training non-roster invitations to both players.
The players that the Phils have signed are infielder Hector Luna and outfielder Luis Montanez. Luna, who spent the 2011 season playing on the Red Sox Triple-A Pawtucket team, had played 311 games on the major league level between 2004-2010, playing for the Cardinals, Indians, Blue Jays and Marlins, compiling a .265 career batting average (194 hits in 732 at-bats). During his time in the majors, he had played at least one game at all four infield positions and all three outfield positions. Last year, for Pawtucket, he played in 113 games, batting .283, hitting 14 home runs and 58 RBIs. The other signed player, Montanez, spent part of the just finished 2011 season playing for Triple-A Iowa in the Cubs minor league system, appearing in 92 games, batting .321, hitting 7 home runs, and knocking in 69 RBIs. He had also appeared in 36 games with the Cubs, batting .222 (13 for 54). In his major league career, 2008-2011, in which he spent the first three seasons playing for the Orioles, he has a career batting average of .223 (68 for 305).
In the same press release, the Phils announced that they had lost minor league infielder Carlos Rivero to the Nationals via the waiver wire. Rivero was earlier taken off of the Phils 40-man roster to make room for the just resigned Jimmy Rollins.
My guess is that both signed players will likely end up playing for the Iron Pigs when the regular season starts.
As the Phils tender deals to their four arbitration eligible players, reports are coming out saying that they have signed a one-year deal with pitcher Dontrelle Willis.
The Phils have tendered contracts to the four players on the team who are still arbitration eligible after they had traded Ben Francisco to the Blue Jays: Cole Hamels, Hunter Pence, Kyle Kendrick and Wilson Vladez. Although it is expected that all four will receive an increase in salary whether they accept the proffered contracts, or go through arbitration, most of the fanbase would prefer that the Phils give multi-year contracts to both Hamels and Pence, especially Hamels, to keep them with the team for a while. As for Kendrick and Valdez, the two have shown their worth as insurance policies in case somebody gets hurt (although Kendrick had also shown that he can be a very good asset in the bullpen).
While this is going on, there has been reports that the Phils have signed to a one-year contract, pending him passing a physical, left-hander Dontrelle Willis. Willis, a former Rookie of the Year (2003 with the Marlins), pitched for the Reds last season, going 1-6 with a 5.00 ERA in 13 starts. Being mostly a starter during his nine-years career with the Marlins, the Tigers, the D-backs and the Reds, Willis had complied a record of 72-69 with an ERA of 4.17, as he had appeared in 205 games, all but three as a starter. The Phils, if he passes the physical, will more than likely be using him out of the bullpen as a left-handed specialist, and a spot-starter, as a kind of compliment to Kendrick, since there is really no way that he will be able to make the rotation, especially with his issues with his control.
Hopefully, the signing of Willis will end up being a good move for the Phils for next season.
The Phils have announced that they have invited eight minor leaguers to spring training.
Earlier today the Phils had announced that they have invited eight players in their minor league system to try out with the main team during spring training, 2012. Four of the eight players are pitchers, two are infielders, one is an outfielder and one is a catcher.
Among the four pitchers, two are lefties and two are righties. The four are: left-handers Pat Misch and Raul Valdes and right-handers Scott Elarton and Brian Sanches. Misch made six relief appearances for the Mets in 2011, but spent most of the season at Triple-A Buffalo, making 22 starts. In 2011, Valdes went 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 13 appearances for both the Cardinals and the Yankees. Sanches, pitching for the Marlins, went 4-1 with a 3.94 ERA in 39 games. Elarton, because of injuries, last pitched professionally in 2010, and last pitched in the majors in 2008.
The two infielders are Pete Orr, who appeared in 49 games for the Phils in 2011, batting .219, and Kevin Frandsen, who played the entire year at Lehigh Valley, batting .309, with 5 home runs and 43 RBIs. The final two invitees are outfielder Scott Podsednik, who played in just 34 games, because of injuries, for the Triple-A teams of the Blue Jays and the Phils, batting .245, with six doubles and a triple for the Iron Pigs, and catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, who, at Double-A Reading, played in 109 games, batting .247, with 13 homers and 66 RBIs. For Gosewisch, this will be his fourth invitation to spring training.

The Braves took the lead in the first as, with two men out, Chipper Jones hits a solo home run, his eighteenth home run of the season, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead. The Braves increased their lead in the second as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Alex Gonzalez hits an RBI double, scoring Matt Diaz, who had earlier doubled, giving the Braves a 2-0 lead. The Phils cut the Braves’ lead in half in the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Hunter Pence and Ryan Howard, with Pence stopping at third, and a walk to Shane Victorino, moving Howard up a base, and with two men out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI single, scoring Pence, making it a 2-1 Braves’ lead, while sending Howard up to third base, and Victorino up to second base.
