The Phils leave Boston with a win as they defeat the BoSox, 5-3.
After being crushed in the previous two games of the series, the Phils leave Boston with a victory, as they are able to hold on to defeat the Red Sox, 5-3.
Boston took an early lead in the second as Adrian Beltre hits an 0-2 cutter deep into left field for a lead-off home run, his ninth home run of the season, to give the BoSox a 1-0 lead. The Phils tied the game up at one-all in the fourth as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Jayson Werth hits an RBI single into center field, knocking in Ryan Howard, who had earlier doubled. The Phils then took the lead one batter later as, with one man on base, and with still one man out, Raul Ibanez hits a two-run home run to right, his fourth home run of the year, scoring Werth before him, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. Two batters later, with a man once again on second, and with still only one man out, Juan Castro hits an RBI single to right field, scoring Ben Francisco, who had earlier doubled, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. That would be the score until the top of the ninth, as first Phils’ starter Cole Hamels, and then reliever Jose Contreras in the eighth inning, would pitch themselves out of jams by getting BoSox batters to hit into a couple of double plays. Then, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Francisco hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Werth, who had earlier walked, stoled second, and then stole third, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, with David Ortiz on third, via a double and a fly out to right by Mike Lowell, and with one man out, Ortiz scored on a Carlos Ruiz’s pass ball, making it a 5-2 Phils’ lead. Three batters later, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Daniel Nava hits an RBI single, knocking in J.D. Drew, who had earlier walked, and had gone to second on defensive indifference, making it a 5-3 Phils’ lead. But that would be the final score as Brad Lidge records his fourth save of the season by getting Marco Scutaro to pop out to third for the final out.
Cole Hamels gets the win as he pitches seven strong innings, giving up just one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out eight. His record is now 6-5 with a 3.74 ERA. Jose Contreras records his fourth hold of the year as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up two hits. J.C. Romero pitches a third of an inning, giving up two runs on one hit, a walk, and a pass ball. Brad Lidge records his fourth save of the season by pitching two-thirds of an inning, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Tim Wakefield took the lost, as he pitches seven and a thirds innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out three. His record is now 2-5 with an ERA of 5.42. Dustin Richardson pitches two-thirds scoreless innings, giving up no runs or hits. Ramon Ramirez pitches an inning, giving up a run on no hits and a walk, as he struck out two.
The Phils had seven hits in the game, with Placido Polanco leading the team with two hits, a single and a double. Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Raul Ibanez, Ben Francisco and Juan Castro had the other five Phils’ hits, with Howard and Francisco’s hits being doubles, with both man scoring a run, while Francisco knocked in a run with a sac fly, with Werth and Castro’s hits being singles, with each knocking in a run and Ibanez’s hit being a two-run home run.
The Phils (32-29, 3rd NL East) have the day off today.
Spring Training: Phils get blanked by the Red Sox, 3-0.
Yesterday afternoon, the Phillies were defeated by the Red Sox, as the offense was thrown goose eggs all afternoon, losing 3-0.
Brett Myers, the most likely opening night starter, if the Phils decide to give Cole Hamels extra time to get ready for the season, started the game for the Phils. Myers pitched five innings, giving up two runs in the first on a two-run home run by Mike Lowell, before settling down and blanking the BoSox for the next four innings. He would give up five hits along with the two runs, as he walked five batters (seems like bad Brett wanted to come out yesterday) and a strike out. Robert Mosebach followed him, pitching a shut out inning, giving up only two hits. Chad Durbin pitched next, having a shut out inning, giving up no hits, as he walked one, who was later wiped out in a double play and struck out one. Ryan Madson pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits, one of them being as solo home run to Chris Carter, as he struck out two batters. Myers took the lost, with his spring training record now being 1-1 with a ERA of 2.63.
The Phillies would only get six hits in the game. Jayson Werth, Raul Ibanez, Ryan Howard, John Mayberry, Jr., Pablo Ozuna and Carlos Ruiz would each get a hit, with Ibanez and Ruiz’s hits being doubles. None of the batters were able to knock in a run.
In other Phillies news, Kyle Kendrick, as I’d expected, was sent down to the minors camp this morning. He will more than likely start the season pitching for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Hopefully, he’ll come back with a better demeaner and a new pitch or two.
The Phils are presently playing the New York Yankees at Bright House Field in Clearwater.
Poor performance by Kendrick leads to the Phillies losing to the BoSox, 7-4.
Kyle Kendrick’s poor performance against the World Champions Red Sox leads to an early exit and to a lost as the Phillies are unable to effectively rally as they lose the final game of their three games series to the Red Sox, 7-4. The Red Sox would break it open early as their first four men would get on base and score against Kendrick to give them a 4-0 lead. After Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia would both get on base via singles, J.D. Drew would knock them both in as he hits a three-run home run off of Kendrick, for his thirteenth home run of the year. Mike Lowell would quickly follow with a solo shot of his own, his eleventh home run of the season. The Phillies would get a run back in their half of the first as Ryan Howard would beat the shift against him to hit a RBI single, scoring Shane Victorino, who has earlier walked. The BoSox would put the game away for keeps in the third inning as Bill Moss hit a two-run single, scoring Drew, who has earlier doubled, and Lowell, who has reached base after being hit by the pitch, to make it 6-1 BoSox. The Red Sox would then score their last run of the game in the fourth, as, with Clay Condrey pitching in relief of Kendrick, Drew would hit a RBI single, knocking in Pedroia, who has earlier doubled to give Boston a 7-1 lead. With the bullpen shuting down the World Champs for the rest of the game, the Phillies tried to chip away at Boston’s lead. They would make a 7-2 game in the fifth, when Jayson Werth hit into a force play, scoring Greg Dobbs. The Phils would then cut the lead down to 7-4 in the seventh, when, with no one out and two men on, pinch hitter Pedro Feliz would hit a two-run single, scoring previous pinch hitter Eric Bruntlett, who has earlier singled, and Carlos Ruiz, who has earlier walked, and who would both move up a base on reliever Craig Hanson’s wild pitch. But that would be it for the Phillies as their rally would then get snuffed out by reliever Manny Delcarmen, who would get six of the seven men that he would face, before the BoSox would send in Jonathan Papelbon who would record his twenty-first save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Kyle Kendrick would take the lost as he was unable to get his changeup down, as he would go only three innings while being rocked for six earned runs on six hard hits. He is now 6-3 with a 5.06 ERA. Clay Condrey would pitch two innings of relief, giving up one earned run on four hits. Chad Durbin would pitch an inning, giving up no runs on two hits. Rudy Seanez would also go an inning, giving up no runs on no hits. J.C. Romero would pitch a scoreless inning, giving up a hit. Brad Lidge would pitch the ninth, giving up no runs on no hits. Justin Masterson would get the win, as he pitches five innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits. His record is now 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA. Javier Lopez would pitch a scorless inning, giving up no hits. Craig Hensen would pitch to four batters, giving up two earned runs on two hits. Manny Delcarmen would pitch two innings, giving up no runs on no hits. Jonathan Papelbon would pitch a scoreless, hitless ninth as he records his twenty-first save of the year.
The Phillies have now lost their third straight series, as they were both outscored and outpitched by the World Champion Red Sox. Although it would appear that the two teams are almost evenly matched, if any of the Phillies’ starters were to lose control of their pitches, like Kyle Kendrick did this afternoon, the BoSox will be waiting to pounce on it, while the Phillies’ batters appear to be easily shut down by the Boston starters, especially if they do not act very patiently at the plate. The later is going to have to be corrected, hopefully by the All-Star break, else they are going to be in for a long, hot summer of fighting for first place with the Marlins.
With the lost, the Phillies (42-32) who will have the day off tomorrow, will now wait for the results of the games involving the rest of the division. They now have a two and a half games lead over the Marlins, as they prepare to once again play the Mariners in Seattle. They lead both the Braves and the Mets by six games, as they wait to face the Rangers and the Angels respectively. The Phillies will be hoping that all three of their main opponents will lose their games on the road, so that they will hold on to their present leads in the standings.
