The Phils come back from a 6-0 deficit before hanging on to defeat the Dodgers, 9-8, to end the team’s best road trip on a high note.

The Phils come back from falling behind 6-0 before holding on to sweep the Dodgers, 9-8, ending their 9-1 road trip, the best in the team’s history, on a high note.

The Dodgers jump into the lead in the first as, with two men on, and with one man out, Matt Kemp hits an RBI single, knocking in Casey Blake, who had earlier walked, then went up to second base on Andre Ethier’s walk, giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead, while sending Ethier, who had just walked, up to second base. The Dodgers then made it a 4-0 lead as Juan Rivera hits a three-run home run, his eighth home run of the year, knocking in both Ethier and Kemp. Two batters later, after James Loney had walked, the Dodgers took a 5-0 lead as Dioner Navarro hits an RBI double, scoring Loney, before he is thrown out trying to stretch his double into a triple, 9-4-3-5, for the inning’s second out. The Phils tried to score in the third as, with two men on, and with one man out, Chase Utley hits a fly ball to center that was caught by center fielder Kemp, for the inning’s second out, who then threw home to try and cut down Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier singled, then stopped at third base on Shane Victorino’s ground-rule double. Kemp’s throw, after being grabbed by first baseman Loney, beats Rollins to the plate, who is then tagged out by the catcher Navarro, for the inning’s final out, 8-3-2, thus ending the Phils’ threat. The Dodgers then added to their lead in their half of the third as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Navarro hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Kemp, who had earlier doubled, then stopped at third on Rivera’s single, giving the Dodgers a 6-0 lead. The Phils then started their comeback. The Phils got onto the scoreboard in the fourth as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Hunter Pence hits a two-run home run, his fourteenth home run of the season, and his third as a Phil, knocking in Ryan Howard, who had lead-off the inning with a walk, making it a 6-2 Dodgers’ lead. Four batters later, with a man on second, and with two men out, Vance Worley helped himself with an RBI single, knocking in Michael Martinez, who had earlier reached base on a Loney fielding error, cutting the Dodgers’ lead down to 6-3. The Phils then cut the Dodgers’ lead down to 6-4 as, with two men on, and with one man out, Pence reaches first base on third baseman Blake’s fielding error, as Victorino, who had earlier walked, then stopped at second base on Howard’s single, scores, while Howard, who had just singled, would stop at third base, while Pence would go on to second base. A batter later, the Phils made it a 6-5 Dodgers’ lead as Raul Ibanez hits an RBI ground out, 3-unassisted, knocking in Howard, while sending Pence on to third. The Dodgers added to their lead in their half of the fifth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Loney hits an RBI double, scoring Rivera, who had just singled, making it a 7-5 Dodgers’ lead. The Phils tied the game up at seven-all in the sixth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Utley hits a two-run single, scoring pinch hitter Ben Francisco, who had earlier walked, then stopped at third on Rollins’ single, and Rollins, who had earlier singled, then stole second base. The Phils then took the lead as Howard hits a two-run home run, his twenty-fifth home run of the season, scoring Utley, giving the Phils a 9-7 lead. The Dodgers made it a 9-8 Phils’ lead in the ninth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Rivera hits into an RBI force out, 4-6, wiping out Kemp, who had just singled, at second base, for the inning’s second out, while scoring Blake, who had earlier singled, then had stopped at third on Kemp’s single. That would be the final score as Ryan Madson then recorded his twenty-second save of the season by getting pinch hitter Rod Barajas to fly out to center for the final out.

Vance Worley received a no-decision as he went four innings, giving up six runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out six. Kyle Kendrick (7-5, 3.26) gets the win as he pitches an inning, giving up a run on two hits, as he struck out two. David Herndon received his fourth hold of the year as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Brad Lidge recorded his second hold of the season as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up a hit and a walk, while striking out a batter. Antonio Bastardo received his eleventh hold of the year as he pitched an inning and two-thirds, striking out a batter. Ryan Madson recorded his twenty-second save of the season as he went an inning, giving up a run on two hits. Chad Billingsley also received a no-decision as he pitched four and a third innings, giving up five runs, only three of which were earned, on seven hits and three walks. Hong-Chih Kuo pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit and a walk, while striking out a batter. Blake Hawsworth blew his first save attempt of the year before taking the lost (2-3, 3.57), as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on three hits, while striking out one. Matt Guerrier, Mike MacDougal and Javy Guerra combined for three and one-thirds scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Guerrier) and a walk (Guerra), while striking out three (Guerrier (2), Guerra (1)), between them.

The Phils had eleven hits in the ballgame, with Jimmy Rollins (Singles), Shane Victorino (Single, Double), and Ryan Howard (Single, Home Run, 2 RBIs), all leading the team with two hits each. Chase Utley (Single, 2 RBIs), Hunter Pence (Home Run, 2 RBIs), Raul Ibanez (Single, RBI), Brian Schneider (Single) and Vance Worley (Single, RBI), had the other five Phils’ hits, as the offense bailed out Worley on their way to defeating the Dodgers. The other Phil run came in on Blake’s error.

The Phils then took a 3-0 lead in the second as, with two men on, and with two men out, Jimmy Rollins hits a two-run double, scoring Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier singled, then went the third on first baseman James Loney’s throwing error of Michael Martinez’s grounder, and Martinez, who was safe at first on Loney’s error, then went to second base on Roy Halladay’s sacrifice bunt, 1-4. The Dodgers got that run back in the eighth as, with a runner on second, and with nobody out, Aaron Miles hits an RBI single, scoring Matt Kemp, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, making it a 4-2 Phils’ lead. Three batters later, with runners on the corners, thanks to a throwing error by Michaeal Stutes as he tried to pick off Miles, allowing him to reach second base, before moving on to third on Laney’s fly out for the inning’s first out, and then a walk to Rod Barajas, before he is replaced by pinch runner Eugenio Velez, pinch hitter Juan Rivera hits an RBI pinch hit single, scoring Miles, making it a 4-3 Phils lead, while sending Velez up to second base.  The Phils then added an insurance run in the ninth as, with one man out, Victorino hits a solo home run, his twelfth home run of the year, making it a 5-3 Phils’ lead. Michael Stutes received his seventh hold of the season as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up two runs on two hits. The Phils and the Dodgers spent the first four and one-half innings in a pitchers’ duel, as Phils’ starter Cole Hamels pitched five shut out innings, giving up just two hits, while striking out six, while Dodgers’ starters and Phils’ regular season nemesis Hiroki Kuroda pitched four shut out innings up to this point, giving up a hit and a walk, as he struck out six. Then, with two men out and with no one on, Michael Martinez got on base with a two-out triple, soon followed by a walk to Hamels, putting runners on the corners. Then, with Shane Victorino batting, with a 2-1 count, Huroki threw a wild pitch, which allowed Hamels to go to second base, but Martinez stayed on third. Victorino is then intentionally walked to load the bases, before Dom Brown finally ended the inning by flying out to right. After Hamel pitched a 1-2-3 top of the sixth, the Phils finally ended the 0-0 tie in their half of the sixth as, with one man out, Ryan Howard hits a solo home run, his thirteenth home run of the year, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Dodgers then tried to tie the game up in the seventh as Andre Ethier began the inning off with a double, before stopping at third on Matt Kemp’s single, putting runners on the corners, with nobody out. Hamels got out of the inning by first getting Juan Uribe to pop out to the second baseman for out number one, then striking out Marcus Thames swinging for out number two, before finally ending the inning by getting Rod Barajas to pop out to shortstop. The Phils then added a run in their half of the seventh as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Victorino, who had earlier tripled, scored on a fielder’s choice grounder to second baseman Jamey Carroll by Brown, beating the thrown to home, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while Brown would be safe at first. The Dodgers again threaten to score in the eighth as, with runners on the corners, via a pinch hit single by Aaron Miles, and an infield single by Casey Blake, while Miles would stop at third on Placido Polanco’s throwing error. But, Hamels would get out of trouble by getting Ethier to ground out, 3-1, for the inning’s final out. Ryan Madson then recorded his fourteenth save of the season by putting down the Dodgers in the ninth.

Ryan Madson collected his fourteeth save of the season, giving up a hit. Hiroki Kuroda (5-7, 3.35) took the lost as he pitched five and a third innings, giving up a run on four hits and three walks, while striking out seven. Mike MacDougal pitched two-thirds of an inning, walking a batter, while striking out one. Matt Guerrier pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit, while striking out one.  Josh Lindblom pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter.

The game will start at 7:05 pm EDT.  The Phils will send to the mound Kyle Kendrick (3-4, 3.78), who is coming off a lost against the Pirates on June 4, as he went five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, in the Phils’ 6-3 lost. Kendrick will be trying to do better than he did in his previous start. The Cubs will counter with Randy Wells (1-1, 5.74), who is coming off a no-decision against the Cards on June 4, as he pitched five and two-third innings, giving up four runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out one, in the Cubs’ 5-4 lost. He will be going for his second win of the season. The Phils will be trying to start their next home series with a win.

Two batters later, with two men on, and with two men out, with both man running, Ryan Howard hits an RBI single, scoring Victorino, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead, while sending Polanco on to third. The Phils then made it a 3-0 lead in the eighth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Carlos Ruiz hits an RBI double, knocking in Chase Utley, who had earlier walked, then moved up to second on Ben Francisco’s walk, while sending Francisco, who had just walked, on to third. The Phils’ starter will be Roy Oswalt (3-3,  2.70), who is coming off a lost against the Nats on June 1, as he went five innings,  giving up two runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out three, in the Phils’  2-1 lost. He will be trying to put a stop to his present three-game losing streak. The Dodgers will counter with Rubby De La Rosa (1-0, 1.80),  who is coming off a relief appearance against the Rockies on May 31, as he went two innings, giving up a hit, while striking out two, in the Dodgers’ 8-2 win. He hope that he will give the Phils fits in his spot start. The Phils hope to finally give Roy O his first win since coming back to the rotation after seeing to his family.

Phils hang on last night to defeat the Nationals, 6-5. Lead in the East stays at six games.

The Phils continue the adventure that is the 2009 season, as Ryan Madson complete his second straight save opportunity by getting Adam Dunn to hit into a 4-6 line out double play with a runner on second and one man out, as the Phils finally defeat the pesty Nats, 6-5. Their lead over the Marlins remain at six games while their magic number drop down to nineteen.

The Nats took a quick 1-0 lead in the first as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Adam Dunn hits an RBI single, knocking in Cristian Guzman, who had earlier doubled. The Phils would strike back in the second, as, with a runner on second, and with nobody out, Jayson Werth hits an RBI single, knocking in Raul Ibanez, who had earlier doubled, tying the score at one-all. The Phils would then take the lead as, with the bases loaded, via a Pedro Feliz single, moving Werth up to second base, and then a walk to Paul Bako, moving Werth to third and Feliz to second, and still with no one out, Cliff Lee helped his own cause by hitting an RBI single, easily scoring Werth, and giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while sending Feliz up to third, and Bako to second. The Phils would then make it 3-1, as with the bases still loaded, and with still no outs, Jimmy Rollins hits into an RBI ground out, 4-3, making the inning’s first out as he scores Feliz, while moving Bako to third, and sending Lee to second. The Phils made it a 4-1 lead in the fifth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Ibanez hits an RBI double, knocking in Ryan Howard, who had just walked. The Nats would get that run back in their half of the fifth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Guzman hits an RBI ground out on a slow roller to Lee, 1-3, scoring Alberto Gonzalez from third, who had earlier doubled, and had gone to third on Justin Maxwell’s single, making it a 4-2 Phils’ lead, while moving Maxwell up to second base. Dunn would make the score 4-3 as he hits an RBI single, scoring Maxwell, who just beat Werth’s throw to the plate, while Dunn would move up to third on the throw. The Nats tied the game up at four-all in the seventh as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Guzman hits into a force out, 6-4, on a ball misplayed by Rollins, allowing Gonzalez, who had earlier doubled, and had gone to third on pinch hitter Jorge Padilla’s single, wiping out Padilla at second, to score, as Guzman beat out the throw to first. The Phils regained the lead in the eighth as Jayson Werth hits a lead-off home run, his thirty-third home run of the season, giving the Phils a 5-4 lead. The next batter, Feliz, followed with a home run of his own, his tenth home run of the year, making it a 6-4 Phils’ lead. The Nats got a run back in their half of the eighth as, with the bases loaded, with Ryan Zimmerman reaching base on a catch error by Howard, a double by Josh Willingham, sending Zimmerman to third base, and a walk to Elijah Dukes, and with one man out, pinch hitter Pete Orr hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Zimmerman from third, making it a 6-5 Phils’ lead. That would end up being the final score, as Ryan Madson converted his sixth save of the season, by getting Dunn to hit into a line out double play, 4-6, as Justin Maxwell, is doubled off second base.

Cliff Lee got the win as he went seven innings plus two batters, giving up five runs, four of which were earned, on ten hits, as he struck out four. His record is now 13-11 (6-2) with an ERA of 3.13. Chan Ho Park converted his tenth hold as he pitched an inning, giving up just a walk. Ryan Madson collected his sixth save, as he also pitched an inning, giving up a hit, as he struck out a batter. Garrett Mock received a no-decision as he pitched five innings, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out four. Jason Bergmann pitched one and a third scoreless innings, giving up just a hit and a walk. Sean Burnett pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a walk, while striking out a batter. Tyler Clippard took the lost, as he gave up two runs on two hits, while striking out a batter. His record is now 2-2 with a 3.16 ERA. Mike MacDougal pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits, as he struck out two batters.

The game will be played at Nationals Park and it will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. He will be trying once again for his tenth win of the season. The Nats will counter with Livan Hernandez (7-10, 5.44), who is coming off a lost against the Marlins on September 5, as he went five innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and four walks, while striking out six, in the Nats’ 5-4 lost. He will be trying to keep the Nats from being once again swept by the Phils. The Phils will be going for a sweep before coming home for seven games with the Mets and the Nats, as they hope to keep the Marlins at bay in the pennant race.

Ryan Howard’s two massive home runs, a solo shot and a team record setting grand-slam home run, help leads the Phils to a 9-6 win over the lowly Nationals. The Phils, meanwhile, regain first place from the Mets.

The Nationals took the lead in the second as, with two men on, and one man out, Wil Nieves hits a two run double, knocking in Josh Willingham, who had earlier singled, and had moved up to second on Alberto Gonzalez’s single, and Gonzalez, who had just singled, giving the Nats a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, with Nieves still on second, and now with two men out, Anderson Hernandez hits an RBI single, knocking in Nieves, who beat the throw to the plate, giving the Nats a 3-0 lead, while Hernandez would move up to second on the throw. The Phils would get a run back in their half of the second as Ryan Howard hits a lead-off home run, his thirteenth home run of the year, cutting the Nats’ lead to 3-1. In the third, with a runner on second, and one man out, Jimmy Rollins hits an RBI single, scoring Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier walked, and had moved up to second on Cole Hamels’ sacrifice bunt, making it a 3-2 Nats’ lead. After Rollins stole second base, the Phils loaded the bases on a Shane Victorino walk and a Chase Utley infield single. Ryan Howard then clears them with a 475-ft monster to right for a grand-slam home run, his fourteenth home run of the year, his third grand-salm of the season, and the eighth grand-slam of his career, setting a new franchise record, as he scored Rollins, Victorino and Utley before him, giving the Phils a 6-3 lead. In the fourth, the Nats would get one of the runs back, as, with one man on, and nobody out, Gonzalez hits an RBI triple, knocking in Austin Kearns, who had earlier walked, making it a 6-4 Phils lead. The Phils would get the run back in their half of the inning as, with a runner on second, and one man out, Hamels hits an RBI double, knocking in Ruiz, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 7-4 lead. In the sixth, with a man on, and two men out, pinch hitter Ronnie Belliard hits a pinch hit two-run home run, scoring Kearns, who had earlier singled, had gone to second when Gonzalez was hit by the pitch, and had gone over to third on Nieves’ double play, 5-4-3, wiping out Gonzalez at second, making it 7-6 Phils. The Nats took a quick 1-0 lead in the second, as Josh Willingham hits a lead-off home run, his seventh home run of the season. The Phils tied the game up at one-all in their half of the second as, with two men on, and one man out, Carlos Ruiz hits an RBI double, knocking in Jayson Werth, who had earlier singled, and had moved up to second on Pedro Feliz’s single, while sending Feliz, who had earlier singled, over to third. The Phils would take the lead in the third as, with two men on, and one man out, Raul Ibanez hits a two-run single, scoring Shane Victorino, who had earlier singled, and had moved on to third on Chase Utley’s double, and Utley, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. Two batters later, with Ibanez still on first and now with two men out, Feliz hits an RBI triple, knocking in Ibanez, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. J.A. Happ got the win as he pitched five and a third strong innings, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks, while striking out five. His record is now 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA. Chad Durbin pitched two-thirds of an inning, as he recorded his fourth hold, as he gave up an unearned run on two hits, while he struck out a batter.
