Philadelphia_PhilliesTwo fielding mistakes help lead to a four-run sixth as the Phils lose to the Angels, 4-3.

The Phils took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Chase Utley hits an RBI triple, knocking in Ben Revere, who had started the inning off with a single, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, a triple that was challenged by the Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia, but was upheld after being reviewed by the umpires. The Phils added to their lead one batter later as Ryan Howard hits an RBI single, scoring Utley, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Angels got a run back in the top of the sixth as, with the bases loaded, via a lead-off double by Collin Cowgill, who then went to third base as Albert Pujols reached first base on third baseman Cody Asche’s fielding error, and a walk to Howie Kendrick, moving Pujols up a base, and with one man out, Cowgill would score on Asche’s throwing error to the plate of Chris Iannetta’s grounder to third on a force attempt at the plate, as the throw pulled catcher Carlos Ruiz off of the plate, making it a 2-1 Phils’ lead, a call that would be confirmed after a challenged was made by Phils’ manager Ryne Sandberg, while Pujols and Kendrick would both move up a base and Iannetta would be safe at first, leaving the bases loaded. The Angels then tied the game up at two-all one batter later as Grant Green hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Pujols, while moving Kendrick up to third base. The Angels then took a 4-2 lead as, with runners on the corners, and now with two men out, Luis Jimenez hits a two-run double, knocking in Kendrick and Ianenetta. The Phils would get a run back in the bottom of the seventh as, with a runner on third, and with nobody out, Ruiz hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Dom Brown, who had started the inning off with a triple, making it a 4-3 Angels’ lead. That would end up being the final score as Ernesto Frieri collected his fifth save of the year with a scoreless ninth, getting Ruiz to hit into a double play to end the ballgame.

Cliff Lee (3-4, 3.23) took the lost as he pitched seven innings, giving up four unearned runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out seven. Mike Adams and Jake Diekman combined for two scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Adams) and a walk (Diekman) between them. Matt Shoemaker (1-1, 3.86) got the win as he threw five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out three. Michael Kohn received his third hold of the season by pitching a scoreless inning, giving up a walk and a hit batter. Fernando Salas collected his third hold of the season as he pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit. Joe Smith received his fifth hold of the year as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Ernesto Frieri received his fifth save of the season by throwing a scoreless ninth, giving up a walk, while striking out a batter.

The Phils had only four hits in the game, a single by Ben Revere, a triple by Chase Utley (RBI), a single by Ryan Howard (RBI) and a triple by Dom Brown. The final Phil run came in on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Ruiz. The Phils also had three walks (Howard, Brown, Ruiz) and a hit batter (Utley) in the game, while the defense committed three errors, all by Cody Asche.

The Phils (17-20, 5th NL East) conclude their two-game series with the Angels (20-18, 2nd AL West), with a game already in progress.
