That would be it for the scoring, as Moyer proceeded to shut the Braves down by throwing a two-hit shut out against them, in the process becoming the oldest pitcher to throw a shut out in Major League History.

The game started as a three and a half innings pitchers’ duel between Mets’ starter Mike Pelfrey, who gave up only one hit, a lead-off double to Shane Victorino in the first, while Phils’ starter Roy Halladay gave up three hits, getting out of jams in the second, third and fourth innings, leaving it a 0-0 ballgame. The Phils then took the lead in their half of the fourth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Jayson Werth hits an RBI single on a pop up that Mets’ second baseman Alex Cora is unable to catch, scoring Chase Utley, who had earlier singled on a pop up that Mets’ shortstop Jose Reyes was unable to catch, and then moved up to second on Ryan Howard’s single, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Howard, who had already singled, up to second base. The Cardinals increased their lead as, with two men on, and nobody out, Holliday hits an RBI single, knocking in Mark DeRosa, who had earlier singled, and had gone to second on Albert Pujols’ single, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead, while sending Pujols to third. One batter later, Ryan Ludwick made it 3-0 Cards as he hits an RBI single, knocking in Pujols. On the play, Holliday is thrown out at third for the inning’s first out, 7-5, as he tried to move up to third, while Ludwick would move up to second base on the throw. Yadier Molina would make it a 4-0 Cardinals’ lead with an RBI single, scoring Ludwick. Ankiel made it a 5-0 Cards’ lead with an RBI double, knocking in Molina, before Ankiel would move up to third on the throw to the plate. The redbirds would make it 6-0 in the seventh as, with a man on third, and noone out, DeRosa hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Julio Lugo, who had earlier tripled. The Cards made it 7-0 as, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Pujols, a double by Holliday, that sent Pujols to third base, and a walk to Molina, with two men out, Ankiel hits an RBI single, knocking in Pujols, while moving both Holliday and Molina up a base. The Phils would finally score in the bottom half of the seventh, as, with a runner on third and two men out, Jayson Werth, who had earlier singled, had moved up to second on Pedro Feliz’s single, and had gone to third on Carlos Ruiz’s double play ball, 6-4-3, wiping out Feliz at second base, would score on a wild pitch, with Matt Stairs batting, making it 7-1 Cardinals. In the eighth, Lugo, with one man out, would make it 8-1 Cards by hitting a solo home run, his second home run of the year. That would be the final score as the Phils would be unable to do anything in their last two times at-bat.

Jason Motte pitched two-thirds of an inning, getting out the two batters that he would face. In the meantime, the Phils’ starter, Rodrigo Lopez, making his first major league start since 2007, was having his way with the Mets, shutting them out for the first six innings, giving up only three hits and a walk before the seventh inning. In that inning, the Mets would finally get on the board as, with one man on, and one man out, Nick Evans hits an RBI double, knocking in Ryan Church, who had earlier doubled, making it a 7-1 Phils’ lead. The next batter, Brian Schneider hits an RBI ground-rule double, thanks to fan interference, scoring Evans from second base, cutting the Phils’ lead down to 7-2. Charlie Manuel then came out and replaced Lopez with Chan Ho Parks, as Lopez left to an obvation from the fans. Park proceeded to end the Mets’ threat with two straight strikeouts, before pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Ryan Madson then came in the ninth, pitching a 1-2-3 inning, helped by a catch of Schneider’s liner to left by John Mayberry, Jr. for the inning’s second out.

Chan Ho Park pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings, giving up just a hit and a walk, while striking out two. Ryan Madson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth. Livan Hernandez took the lost, as he went three innings plus three batters, giving up all seven runs on ten hits and four walks, while only striking out two. His record is now 5-4 with a 4.56 ERA. Pat Misch, Bobby Parnell and Elmer Dessens pitched five scoreless innings, giving up only one hit (Dessens) and a walk (Misch), while striking out four batters (Misch (3), Parnell (1)) between them.

After being keep in check by the Braves’ pitching staff, the Phils’ bats erupted for ten hits and seven runs in the first four innings before they were finally stopped by the Mets’ bullpen. Hopefully they can do the same to tonight’s Mets’ starter.

The Phils got that run back in the seventh, as, with one man out, Ibanez hits a solo home run, his sixteenth home run of the season, giving the Phils a 6-1 lead. The Phils tacked on another run in the eighth as, with two men on, and one man out, Chase Utley hits an RBI single, scoring Pedro Feliz, who had earlier singled, and had gone on to second on Rollins’ single, making it a 7-1 Phils’ lead, while he sent Rollins, who had just singled, over to second. In the bottom half of the eighth, the Yanks would get a run back as Derek Jeter hits a lead-off home run, his sixth home run of the season, making it a 7-3 Phillies’ lead. Two batters later, with one man out, Mark Teixeira would hit a solo home run of his own, his twelfth home run of the season, cutting the Phillies’ lead down to 7-3. But that would be the final score as Ryan Madson would shut down the Yanks in the ninth inning.

He will be going for his fifth win of the season. The Phillies will be going out to try and win their eighth game in their ten games road trip, while showing that they are a team to be respected.
