On-Deck Series: The Phils sweep the series, helped by a four-run fifth, as they defeat the Pirates, 7-2.

Thanks to a four-run fifth, the Phils sweep the On-Deck series from the Pirates, winning, 7-2.

The Phils took the lead in the first as, with one man on, and with two men out, Hector Pence hits an RBI double, knocking in Shane Victorino, who had earlier walked, then stole second base, before moving on to third on Jimmy Rollins’ ground out, 4-3, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Pirates tied the game up at one-all in the fifth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Robbie Grossman hits an RBI double, scoring Clint Barmes, who had earlier singled. The Pirates then took a 2-0 lead as Yamaico Navarro hits an RBI single, knocking in Barmes.  The Phils tied the game up at two-all in theitr half of the fifth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Victorino hits an RBI single, knocking in Pete Orr, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, while sending Brian Schneider, who had just walked, up to second base. The Phils then retook the lead for good as Placido Polanco hits a three-run home run, his first home run of the spring, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead. The Phils added to their lead in the eighth as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Orr hits an RBI double, knocking in Laynce Nix, who had earlier doubled, then went to third as Ty Wigginton hits into a 6-4-3 doubleplay, wiping out at second base John Mayberry, Jr., who had earlier walked, for the inning’s first out, giving the Phils a 6-1 lead. The Phils then made it a 7-1 lead as Schneider hits an RBI single, knocking in Orr. That would end up being the final score as Eric Fryer struck out, looking, for the game’s final out.

Cole Hamels received a no-decision as he pitched four scoreless innings, giving up three hits, while striking out five. Antonio Bastardo pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on a hit. David Herndon (1-0, 3.31) got the win as he pitched an inning and a third, giving up a run on three hits, while striking out two. Raul Valdes received his first hold of the spring as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Chad Qualls received his second hold of the spring as he threw a 1-2-3 inning. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a 1-2-3 inning, as he struck out two. James McDonald also received a no-decision as he went three innings, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, while striking out three. Chris Leroux (0-1, 10.45) took the lost as he pitched an inning, plus three batters, giving up three runs on two hits and a walk, while striking out one. Tim Wood pitched an inning, giving up a run on one hit. Evan Meek and Jared Hughes combined for two scoreless innings, giving up two hits (one hit apiece) between them. Kris Johnson pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk. Tim Alderson pitched a third of an inning, giving up two hits, while he struck out one.

The Phils had eleven hits in the game, with Pete Orr (Single, Double, RBI) leading the team with two hits. Shane Victorino (Single, RBI), Juan Pierre (Single), Placido Polanco (Home Run, 3 RBIs), Freddy Galvis (Double), Hunter Pence (Double, RBI), Laynce Nix (Double), John Mayberry, Jr. (Double),  Carlos Ruiz (Double), and Brian Schneider (Single, RBI) had the other nine Phils’ hit. The Phils also had three walks and two stolen bases (Victorino, Orr) in the game.

The Phils will have tomorrow off, before they start off the regular season on Thursday with a three game series with the Pirates in Pittsburgh at PNC Park.

On-Deck Series: The Phils hang on to win a back and forth battle with the Pirates as they win, 4-3.

The Phils win a back and forth fight with their cross-state rivals the Pirates to win the first game in their two games on-deck series, 4-3.

The Phils took a 1-0 lead in the first as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Jimmy Rollins hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Juan Pierre, who had earlier doubled, then went to third on Placido Polanco’s fly out. The Phils added to their lead in the second as, with a man on third, and with nobody out, Ty Wigginton hits an RBI ground out, 4-3, scoring Shane Victorino, who had started the inning off with a triple, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 3-0 lead in the third as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Rollins hits an RBI double, knocking in Pierre, who had earlier reached base as he was hit by a pitch, then stole second base. The Pirates got a run back in the fourth as, with a man on second, and with two men out, Neil Walker hits an RBI single, knocking in Jose Tabata, who had earlier singled, then stole second base as Andrew McCutchen struck out, swinging, making it a 3-1 Phils’ lead, before moving up to second base on Hunter Pence’s throwing error. The Pirates then cut the Phils’ lead down to 3-2 as Garrett Jones hits an RBI double, scoring Walker. The Pirates then tied the game up at three-all in the sixth as, with two men out, McCutchen hits a solo home run, his fourth home run of the spring. The Phils regained the lead in the seventh as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Freddy Galvis hits an RBI triple, knocking in Wigginton, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on Brian Schneider’s ground out, 3-unassisted, giving the Phils a 4-3 lead. That would end up being the final score as Kyle Kendrick pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, getting  Jones to flied out to right for the final out.

Joe Blanton received a no-decision as he pitched four and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on three hits, as he struck out two. Antonio Bastardo pitched a third of an inning, striking out the only man that he would face. Pat Misch (1-0, 2.57) received his first blown save of the spring before collecting the win as he pitched three innings, giving up a run on three hits. Kyle Kendrick collected his first save of the spring as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Tony Watson received a no-decision as he went an inning, giving up a run on one hit. Evan Meek pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit. Juan Cruz went an inning, giving up a run on a hit and a hit batter. Joel Hanrahan, Jason Grilli and Chris Resop combined for three scoreless innings, giving up two hits (Grilli (1), Resop (1))  between them, while striking out three (one batter each). Ryan Beckman (0-1, 3.38) took the lost as he pitched two innings, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out two.

The Phils had two hits in the game, with Freddy Galvis leading the team with two hits (Single, Triple, RBI). Juan Pierre (Double), Placido Polanco (Single), Jimmy Rollins (Double, 2 RBIs), Shane Victorino (Triple) and Ty Wigginton (Single, RBI) had the other five Phils’ hits. Pierre also had the only Phils stolen base in the game.

The Phils (13-16) will play the second and final game of their on-deck series with the Pirates (9-19) this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. The game is to start at 1:05 pn EDT.
